Thuppakki Munai‘s recently released soundtrack has two songs by music director LV Muthu Ganesh. The first, ‘Yaar Ivan’, plays up the films action thriller aspirations by blending elements from carnatic as well as fusion music. It sounds fancier than it really is but the song never loses steam, which works in its favour. The music composer builds upon a steady drum beat by adding a trumpet here, a techno beat to freshen things up and a jathi there.
But the core rhythm remains the same. As do singers Karthik and LV Muthu Ganesh, who render the song in a steady monotone, that is nonetheless energetic.
The track would probably sound more impressive onscreen as it is likely to be paired with visuals of Vikram Prabhu as an encounter specialist for whom rules and regulations are so passe. This one lets his gun do the talking, or so the lyrics hint. Pa Vijay conjures up an image of a renegade cop through his lyrics. Also adding to the hero’s wild west image is the whistling at the beginning of the track. Police thimiru is the man’s pride, Pa Vijay writes. The title is explained away in the song as the hero’s friend. Thuppakki Munaiye Thozhan Engiraan.
‘Poovendru‘ is conceived as a romantic song that retains the racy elements of the first one. The beats are different, yes. But the transition from ‘Yaar Ivan’ to ‘Poovendru’ is seamless.

LV Muthu Ganesh veers to the sort of beats that sound like the Darbuka. There’s a lot of orchestration in this song that has rather pedestrian lyrics from Pulamaipithan about the gem that the heroine is. To our surprise, the lyric writer goes on to suggest that the heroine is gold and flowers as well. Such paragons only exist in Tamil cinema, I’m sure.
The album is seven minutes long and makes for an entertaining listening experience. However one cannot shake off the feeling that the songs would translate better onscreen.
