The production of Bengali film Tirandaj Shabor, the fourth film in the Goenda Shabor series starring actor Saswata Chatterjee as police detective Shabor Dasgupta, will start soon, announced the film’s director Arindam Sil.
Sil took to social media to announce that the crime thriller will be his 12th film and that shooting will begin from November 25.
Besides Chatterjee, the film stars Devlina Kumar, Padmanabha Dasgupta, Joydip Kundu, Anirban Chakraborti, Shankar Chakraborty, Debjani Chatterjee, Rammani, and Nigel Akkara.
Chatterjee will be reprising his role as Shabor in this film after Ebar Shabor (2015), Eagoler Chokh (2016) and Aschhe Abar Shabor (2018). He has reportedly been losing weight to prepare for his role.
According to Sil, the fourth film in the detective thriller series will have a humane story with a realistic approach and has love, crime, and some “high-octane” action sequences. Unlike the other films, Shabor’s bumbling assistant Nanda will get a significant screen time. He mentioned that some interesting characters from different backgrounds have been added, all of which is weaved together in the end.
The Goenda Shabor stories were written by renowned Bengali writer Shirshendu Mukhopadhyay. In an instance of a fictional character meeting its creator’s world, the upcoming film is set to be shot at Mukhopadhyay’s former residence. Sil was out location hunting for Tirandaj Shabor in October when he stumbled upon a house in which Mukhopadhyay – winner of a Sahitya Akademi Award- once stayed at and decided to shoot there. Calling it a “divine intervention” and “miracle”, Sil posted a picture of the house on social media.
Among the recent works of Sil is Mayakumari, a tribute film to celebrate 100 years of Bengali cinema, set in the backdrop of the 1940s.
Bengali cinema has seen a host of detective series, including Feluda (written by Satyajit Ray), Byomkesh Bakshi (created by Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay), and Kakababu (created by Sunil Gangopadhyay). However, unlike Feluda, Kakababu and Byomkesh Bakshi- who are all private detectives- Goenda Shabor works in the detective department of the Kolkata Police.
