Minnal Murali, the upcoming Malayalam superhero film starring Tovino Thomas, will have a worldwide premiere on Netflix on Christmas eve (December 24), the streaming platform announced on Thursday. The film will be released in Malayalam with dubs in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Hindi, and English.
Produced by Sophia Paul under the Weekend Blockbusters banner, Minnal Murali is directed by Basil Joseph. The film is written by Arun AR and Justin Matthews.
According to the streaming platform, Minnal Murali is the origin story of how Jaison, an ordinary man, turns into the titular superhero after being struck by a bolt of lightning, which bestows him with special powers. Set in the 90s, the film also stars actors Guru Somasundaram, Harisree Ashokan and Aju Varghese in pivotal roles.
Earlier this month, while announcing that the film will have a direct premiere on Netflix, director Basil said in a statement that they wanted to create a superhero that people could relate to and connect with on an emotional level. “Though the essence of a superhero movie is the action, our genuine efforts were focused on having a strong narrative that could stand on its own while backing the action,” he added.
Actor Tovino stated that he had been committed and attached to the character of Minnal Murali since the beginning. He added that he kept communicating with the director to ensure the best possible outcome. Minnal Murali marks the second collaboration of the actor and director after Godha, the 2017 sports comedy film.

Producer Sophia noted that this superhero film transcends languages as, at the core, it is a human story of emotions and circumstances. Her banner Weekend Blockbusters first co-produced Banglore Days. Later, it went on to produce Kaadu Pookkunna Neram in 2016, the Mohanlal-starrer Munthirivallikal Thalirkkumbol in 2017, and the Biju Menon-starrer Padayottayam in 2018.
Meanwhile, Tovino, who was last seen in Kaanekaane, has a slew of projects in the pipeline, including Naaradan, Varavu, Vaashi, and 2403 ft, among several others.
