Director Vetrimaaran’s new movie Vada Chennai will release on October 17. Dhanush, who plays the lead character in the movie, took to Twitter to announce the release date.

The actor plays a national-level carrom player in the gangster drama. Produced by Dhanush’s Wunderbar Studios, the movie features Samuthirakani, Daniel Balaji, Kishore, Aishwarya Rajesh and Andrea Jeremiah. Santhosh Narayanan scores the music for the movie while Velraj, a regular collaborator of the director, cranks the camera.
The movie which is being planned as a trilogy has been in the pipeline since as early as 2011. Several actors like Karthi and Simbu were in talks to play the lead character but the role eventually went to the VIP-star as shoot kept getting postponed.
Vetrimaaran, whose last film was 2016’s Visaranai, which apart from winning the National Award for the best feature film in Tamil, was also India’s submission to the Oscars. He had also won the National Award for the Best Director for his 2011 movie Aadukalam.

Apart from directing, he has also produced movies like the recently released Annanukku Jey, Kodi and 2015’s Kaaka Muttai which also won the National Award for Best Children’s Film.
This film mark’s his return to directing after a gap of two years.
The movie marks Dhanush’s third acting collaboration with Vetrimaaran. The duo had previously worked together on Aadukalam (for which Dhanush won the National Award for Best Actor) and the director’s debut movie Polladhavan.
Dhanush whose last release was 2017’s VIP 2 also has Gautham Menon’s Ennai Noki Payum Thota gearing up for release this year. He has also acted in an international project – The Extraordinary Journey of a Fakir, a film based on the book of the same name.
He is currently shooting for Maari 2, a sequel to his 2015 movie. The movie has Malayalam star Tovino Thomas playing the main antagonist while featuring three heroines – Sai Pallavi, Vidya Pradeep and Varalaxmi Sarathkumar. The movie is slated to release on December 28.
