Mahaan, the upcoming Tamil film starring actor Vikram alongside his son Dhruv Vikram, will skip theatrical release and premiere on Amazon Prime Video directly, a source in the know confirmed to Silverscreen India, on condition of anonymity.
An official announcement on this is expected soon, the source added.
Mahaan is Vikram’s 60th film. It is written and directed by filmmaker Karthik Subbaraj, and marks the actor’s first collaboration with the director. The film also marks the first time Vikram is sharing screen space with his son Dhruv. Mahaan is backed by producer Lalit Kumar under the 7 Screen Studio banner.
“Though a few from the team wanted a theatrical release, the producers got a good offer from Amazon and the deal has been signed. For now, the streaming platform has slotted the film for premiere in the second week of February,” said the source.
Apart from the father-son duo, Mahaan’s cast also includes actors Simran and Bobby Simha in important roles. While Simha is a frequent collaborator of Subbaraj’s, Simran has previously appeared in the filmmaker’s 2019 film Petta.
Mahaan was announced in June 2020 and went on floors in March 2021. Music composer Anirudh Ravichander was initially brought on board for Mahaan, but he was later replaced by another Subbaraj regular, Santhosh Narayanan.

On August 15, Subbaraj announced that the team had wrapped up the shooting and shortly thereafter, the film’s first-look poster was released. Dubbing was completed in December and in January, Subbaraj tweeted, “Our film Mahaan is all ready and delivered. Will be released very soon. Can’t wait to show the film to you all. Release updates and promotions on the way soon!”
It is to be noted that Mahaan will continue the OTT release streak of the filmmaker, whose last few projects – Jagame Thandhiram, and the anthologies Navarasa and Putham Pudhu Kaalai – all premiered directly on streaming platforms.
