The weekend is big for Tamil as Vijay Sethupati-starrer Super Deluxe and Nayanthara-starrer Airaa engage in a face off at the box office. In Malayalam, the stage has been set for Lucifer that marks actor Prithviraj Sukumaran’s directorial debut as well as his collaboration with Mohanlal. Films such as Junglee, Notebook and Gone Kesh – headlined by smaller stars takes centrestage in Hindi – a rare occurrence.
Airaa
Written and directed by KM Sarjun, Airaa, Nayanthara’s 63rd movie is a mystery thriller and features the actor in a double role for the first time in her career. The film is produced by KJR studios, which had earlier financed Aramm. The film also stars Kalaiyarasan, Yogi Babu, Maathevan and Gabrella Sellus. Music for the film is by KS Sundaramurthy, the composer of 8 Thottakal.
Super Deluxe
Super Deluxe marks the return of Aaranya Kaandam director Thiagarajan Kumararaja after eight long years. From Vijay Sethupathi’s character of transwoman Shilpa to Fahadh Faasil’s fluorescent green wristwatch, there’s so much to look forward to. Samantha Akkineni, Ramya Krishnan and Mysskin play characters with distinctive traits too. The writing team comprises four directors – Nalan Kumarasamy, Neelan K Sekar, Thiagarajan Kumararaja and Mysskin.
Lucifer
Scripted by Murali Gopy, who has earned a name for writing intense political films (Left Right Left, Tiyaan), political thriller Lucifer has piqued viewers’ attention since its announcement. The ensemble cast comprises Mohanlal, Manju Warrier, Indrajith Sukumaran, Tovino Thomas, Vivek Oberoi and Sachin Khedekar. The movie marks the directorial debut of actor Prithviraj Sukumaran.
Notebook
Notebook, a remake of the 2014 Thai film Teacher’s Diary is produced by Salman Khan and features Zaheer Iqbal and Pranutan Bahl in the lead. Pranutan Bahl is the grand-daughter of legendary actress Nutan Bahl while Zaheer Iqbal is the son of Iqbal Ratnasi, who is reportedly Salman’s childhood friend. The film is about how a teacher on a houseboat in Kashmir discovers his predecessor’s diary and falls in love with her. Music for Notebook is by Vishal Mishra.
Junglee
Junglee marks the Hindi directorial debut of Hollywood actor-director-producer Chuck Russel, best known for The Mask and The Scorpion King. Actor and martial artist Vidyut Jamwal plays the protagonist in the movie. Centered on a man-animal relationship, the movie is an action entertainer and touches upon issues such as elephant poaching. Atul Kulkarni plays the antagonist.
Gone Kesh
Gone Kesh features Shwetha Tripathi as a young girl with alopecia, a condition in which she starts losing hair rapidly. Written and directed by newcomer Qasim Khallow, the movie is an inspirational story and questions the conventional meaning of beauty.
