This is one of the highest rated openings for a superhero film (second only to Marvel’s Avengers, and on par with DC’s own The Dark Knight). Naturally, Wonder Woman is being hailed as a feminist phenomenon and has earned its director – Patty Jenkins, much praise for being one of the few woman directors to rake in 100 million in earnings.

Wonder Woman – Princess Diana of Themyscira – is a DC Comics superhero. Part of the universe of Superman and Batman, Wonder Woman is an Amazon princess who is trained to be a fierce warrior, by the other Amazon women of Paradise Island. Sculpted from clay by her mother Queen Hippolyta, and given life by Aphrodite, Diana is given her awesome powers by Zeus, the King of the Gods.

Much of Wonder Women – the comics – was based on feminist theory and critiques of the 40s and 50s, and drew inspiration from Greek poetess and Queer feminist icon Sappho

However, Wonder Woman the film, has received some criticism for its star Gal Gadot’s support of Israeli army’s actions against Palestinians, and for its general white-feminist approach.

However, despite all the criticism, the film is appealing to both the young and old, with Forbes predicting it will earn over USD 350 million in its first weekend.
