Today is SP Jhananathan’s birthday. As a tribute, our song of the day is ‘Kaadhal Vandhaal’ from Iyarkai. The writer and director made his mark in Tamil cinema with his first film Iyarkai in 2003, which also won him a National Award. He later made E, Peranmai, Purampokku Engira Podhuvudamai, Bhooloham, and is back in 2019 with Laabham starring Vijay Sethupathi and Shruti Haasan.
Iyarkai is a love story set against the backdrop of a lost ship in Rameshwaram, and revolves around Kutty Radhika and the two men in her life, played by Shaam and Arun Vijay, who love her. In the end, she agrees to be with Arun Vijay, but it was Shaam’s character that stood out and won appreciation.
‘Kaadhal Vandhaal’ is a song that remains a favourite for its melody, composed by Vidyasagar. The song used to play on Sun TV often and was also known for the visuals. It was shot in Tuticorin port. An official video is not available online, but you can listen to it here.
