Today is Kalaivanar NS Krishnan’s memorial day. NSK was a popular actor-comedian, playback singer and writer during the 1940s and 50s. He died on this day in August 1957, and as a mark of respect, all studios in Chennai closed and film shoots were put on hold for a day.
He was a supporting actor in the super-hit Mudhal Thethi (1955) starring Sivaji Ganesan as a bank employee and Anjali Devi as his wife. ‘Onnil Irundhu Iruvadhu Varaikkum’, also sung by him, is a satire about the lives of the middle-class. Set to music by TG Lingappa, and lyrics by Udumalai Narayana Kavi, he sings of how our days are spent looking forward to the first of every month for salary.
