TM Soundararajan, born on 24th May, died 25th May 2013. Our song of the day is ‘Yaarukaaga’ from one of Sivaji Ganesan’s classics Vasantha Maligai (1972), sung by TMS. The film was directed by KS Prakash Rao, and featured songs with lyrics by Kannadasan, which are popular even today.
TMS worked as a singer and lyricist for over six and a half decades in south Indian cinema, singing many songs for Sivaji Ganesan, MGR, NTR, Gemini Ganesan, SS Rajendaran, and more recently Kamal Haasan, Rajinikanth and others. His first film song was in 1946, at the age of 24.
In this film, Sivaji Ganesan plays a rich man and an alcoholic and Vanisree is an air hostess who helps turn his life around. Sivaji Ganesan’s performance in this song just before he decides to poison himself is highlighted by TMS’ rendition. Ganesan and Vanisri’s roles were very popular in this film and even inspired Kamal and Sridevi’s characters in Vaazhve Maayam.
