Ryan Gosling: ‘Blade Runner 2049’ Will Make You Question What It Means To Be Human

Actor Ryan Gosling, who features in the sequel of Blade Runner, says the film is haunting, and makes one question the idea of what it means to be human.

“The film is haunting. It’s hard to shake. It asks you to question your idea of what it means to be human. It makes you question your ability to recognise the hero from the villain,” Gosling said in a statement.

“It is a nightmarish vision of the future that’s somehow grounded and real and feels possible, and yet it’s presented in this sort of romantic dream-like way; so that sticks with you. Time has kind of proven its specialness,” he added.

A sequel of 1982’s Blade Runner, Blade Runner 2049 is set thirty years after the events of the first film. Sony Pictures Entertainment India is releasing the film on October 6.

Talking about the 1982 film, the Oscar winning actor said: “I was about 14 years old, which I think was 12 years after the original had come out. So, I think my first impression was just the realisation of how influential it had been on so much of what I had grown up watching and listening to.”

Films By Satyajit Ray, Akira Kurosawa Missing From National Archives; Shabana Azmi Calls For Smriti Irani’s Intervention

Shabana Azmi on Thursday drew Information and Broadcasting Minister Smriti Irani’s attention to reports that over 9,000 film prints are missing from the National Film Archive of India (NFAI), Pune.

The actress tweeted the following:

The Indian Express daily accessed data from NFAI under the Right to Information (RTI) Act, and found out that 51,500 cans of film reels, and over 9,200 prints “were not physically present” at the archives. Also, 4,922 cans containing 1,112 film titles, which are not listed in the NFAI’s registers, were present in its vaults.

A “missing” list includes hundreds of culturally and historically important titles, including celluloid prints of films by Satyajit Ray (Pather Panchali, its sequel Aparajito and Charulata), Mehboob Khan (Mother India), Raj Kapoor (Mera Naam Joker, Awaara), Mrinal Sen (Bhuvan Shome), and Guru Dutt (Kaagaz ke Phool), among others.

Q&A With Engineers In Tamil Cinema: Actor Sivakarthikeyan

Editor’s Note: India celebrates Engineers’ Day today. Last year, Silverscreen spoke to a few engineers who went off the beaten path to join the Tamil cinema industry. Here’s a look back at their fascinating stories.

More and more Indians are leaving behind their Engineering degrees to pursue their passion. With engineering colleges mushrooming on every street corner in big and medium-sized cities – and most small towns of South India sporting a college each – the engineering degree is not as coveted as it used it be a couple of decades ago. With regressive campus cultures (no talking to the opposite sex!), lackluster academic practices (enough with the substandard guide books already!), and a single-track approach to life (“what’s your ‘package’?”), any student with an open mind and a need to understand the world, finds these courses stifling.
While silicon is fast losing its sheen to overkill, the world of cinema continues to be as glamorous and glittery as ever. It is drawing talented young people like a lamp does brightly-coloured moths.
Tamil cinema offers a world of possibilities to former engineering graduates as they explore their potential as directors, actors, actresses, music directors and even producers. In the run-up to the Engineers’ Day on 15 September, we ask four prominent members of the Tamil cinema industry about their ‘engineering’ experience.

***

When did you first realise engineering wasn’t for you?

Oh. Ipdi ketta epdi?

How many arrears? Come on, don’t be shy.

Again and again with these questions. Madam, you’re going to get me in trouble.

Are your art directors better at drawing than your engineering drawing professor?

Oh definitely. In college, my teachers used to draw lines, and we used to make roads in them. Here, our art directors give us entire cities to drive cars in. You know who wins this contest right?

BL Theraja and AM Jain, do you still have nightmares about them?

They’re all good people, they never bothered me. Now the man I’d like to meet is Mr Chand.

And..?

Have a nice talk with him

If you could make a movie about your college, what would the premise be?

Varutha Padatha Valibar Sangam plus some serious studies is equal to my college life

How many times were you reprimanded for speaking to a member of the opposite sex?

Oh man. Never. We’d never even look that way. (laughs)

Did you perform during college culturals? Best performance?

What else? Mimicry. I had a great gag involving Rajini sir and Kamal sir. It got me quite a few prizes.

Best Memory about college

Everything. The one thing I remember most about college is the way we laughed at everything. We failed, we laughed. We got arrears, we laughed. Even though we laugh a lot now, it’s just not the same.

Did you get a placement job when you graduated?

Oh yes, I joined Vijay TV

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan Isn’t Part Of Sahir Ludhianvi Biopic, Yet

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan has reportedly not been approached to play poet Amrita Pritam in the Sahir Ludhianvi biopic, starring her husband Abhishek Bachchan in the lead. According to Hindustan Times, while speculations rose that Priyanka Chopra has been replaced, a source told the daily that the reports are “baseless”.

“Aishwarya has not been approached for the film. She has no idea from where such baseless reports are pouring in. She has not seen the script,” a source tells Hindustan Times.

Directed by debutant Jasmeet Reen, Abhishek Bachchan plays poet Sahir Ludhianvi, a role he is reportedly working hard to lose weight for. This is the third film in which Bachchan plays a real-life character, after Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Se and Guru.

Ludhianvi was a prolific poet and lyricist responsible for songs such as Jinhe Naaz Hai Hind Par Woh Kahaan Hai (Pyaasa) and Woh Subah Kabhi Toh Aayegi (Phir Subah Hogi).

Sanjay Leela Bhansali is the producer. Work on the project is expected to begin soon.

‘Lucknow Central’ Actor Farhan Akhtar Finds The Environment At Yerwada Central Jail Quite Disciplined

Farhan Akhtar finds the environment at Yerwada Central Jail is very disciplined and neat, adding that the officials “try and develop a skill in each inmate before they get released so as to build their self-belief”.

Farhan recently visited the jail in Pune to release a song of his forthcoming movie Lucknow Central in August. The actor spoke about his experience in an episode of MTV Beats’ “Baba Ki Chowki”, read a statement.

“The environment at Yerwada is very disciplined and neat. The emphasis on reform is very critical and they try and develop a skill in each inmate before they get released so as to build their self-belief,” Farhan said.

“There is a small room in Yerwada where they have an in-house Radio Jockey. The inmates shared that Sanju (Sanjay Dutt) used to spend a lot of time there and entertain everyone by singing and telling stories of positivity,” he added.

Sanjay served the remainder of his five-year sentence for possessing illegal arms in the March 12, 1993, Mumbai serial bomb blasts case, at the Yerwada Central Jail.

‘Kaala’ Could Be Director Pa Ranjith’s Fastest Film Yet

As much as 70 per cent of superstar Rajinikanth’s upcoming Tamil gangster drama Kaala has been completed. The pace at which it is being shot could make it the fastest shot film in director Pa. Ranjith’s career, a source has said.

“The team is shooting at amazing pace, making it probably the fastest shot film in Ranjith’s career. Nearly 70 per cent of the film has already been completed. The makers are really impressed with the way the film has shaped up,” a source from the film’s unit told IANS.

Set against the backdrop of Mumbai, the film features Rajinikanth in the role of a slum lord-turned-gangster.

The film also stars Huma Qureshi, Anjali Patil, Samuthirakani and Pankaj Tripathi.

The project marks the second time collaboration of Ranjith and Rajinikanth after last year’s Kabali.

Dhanush is bankrolling the film, and he is rumoured to be playing a cameo in Kaala.

Selena Gomez Undergoes Kidney Transplant Due To Lupus

Singer Selena Gomez, 25, has revealed that she has undergone a kidney transplant.

Gomez suffers from Lupus and the side effects of the auto-immune disease damaged her organs so much that she was told by doctors that she required a transplant, reports tmz.com.

She found a donor in her “beautiful friend” Francia Raisa.

Gomez took to Instagram to share the news with her fans.

Alongside a photograph of her and Raisa holding hands while on hospital beds, Gomez wrote: “I’m very aware some of my fans had noticed I was laying low for part of the summer and questioning why I wasn’t promoting my new music, which I was extremely proud of. So, I found out I needed to get a kidney transplant due to my Lupus and was recovering.

“It was what I needed to do for my overall health. I honestly look forward to sharing with you, soon my journey through these past several months as I have always wanted to do with you.”

Gomez later thanked her family and “incredible team of doctors for everything they have done” for her.

“And finally, there aren’t words to describe how I can possibly thank my beautiful friend Francia Raisa. She gave me the ultimate gift and sacrifice by donating her kidney to me. I am incredibly blessed. I love you so much sis. Lupus continues to be very misunderstood but progress is being made,” she wrote.

A quick look at everything making news in the world of cinema today!

Sign On

Aishwarya Rai has not been approached to play Amrita Pritam in an upcoming film

Newsworthy

Selena Gomez underwent a Kidney transplant recently. The singer was forced to do this due to her struggles with auto-immune disease, Lupus.

Ryan Gosling says that his upcoming Blade Runner film is haunting.

Spotlight

Aishwarya Rajesh says that she’s not too fond of ‘commercial stuff’. “I don’t think any newcomer has gone for a film like this to debut. I am somebody who is not too fond of fancy or commercial stuff, like dancing around trees. Even in the 20 films I have done in South, none had any of such stuff. I have never danced in any film of mine, barring some stage shows.”

Timeout

Vishal’s Thupparivalan has reportedly been leaked online. Despite the measures put in place by the production team to ensure that such a scenario did not happen, a version of the film has ended up online.

Reviews

Mysskin seems to live vicariously through Vishal in Thupparivalan. He makes him consult thick tomes from his towering bookshelf – which often appears in sharp relief, a character on its own – and, imbues him and others with traits characteristic of his films.

But then, he is not Moriarty; he’s ‘devil’, and his rival isn’t Holmes, but Kaniyan Poonguntran.

Let them eat cake!

Actor Neha Oberoi, director P Vasu will all turn a year older today!

Thupparivalan Review: Sherlock Holmes For The Tamil Audience

In Mysskin’s Thupparivalan, the attributions are precise and gloriously pedantic. The kind that deserve an indulgent smile. A card announces dedications to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and other Baker Street fans, just as the screen lights up to the face of a woman, awash in the soft glow of candles. She brings up a birthday cake for her husband in the terrace. A few moments later, a bolt of lightning strikes the terrace, and both her husband and son fall to the floor, charred stiff. The woman screams.

It’s a Mysskin film, one that seeks to scare; the obvious contempt and irreverence for mundane, feel-good beginnings is plain to see. Nor does Mysskin care about all the killing – even that of a child — in the first few moments; he establishes a swift, relatable connect – that of a young family engaged in quiet celebration in tellingly moody tones – and rips it apart just as quick. It’s fascinatingly morbid.

If a Mysskin-dressed Vishal is anything to go by, Sherlock Holmes, in his fitted clothing, and a stylish, slanted beret is quite a sight. His home-office is a tastefully-decorated sprawling apartment, with a handsome floor-to-ceiling bookshelf, filled with tomes of all shapes and sizes. Next to it, in precise detail, is a quaint library-ladder – one that comes with a platform. So thoughtful. Mysskin’s introduction to his Holmes though, is mildly unappealing. The camera acts as a body-double for Vishal, who runs amok around the apartment in a show of frustration. “Someone give me a case to solve!” he yells. Holmes in Thupparivalan, is portrayed as quite the eccentric, disagreeable man, who sits with a book upturned on his head – seriously meditating on a case, or getting antsy in the absence of one. Vishal broods on the couch, the library-ladder, book in hand, and when seized with a hunch, dashes across, Dr Watson (Prasanna as Prabhakaran ) in tow. The moments when Vishal does truly seem to channel Holmes’ spirit are when he’s still, his dark shades rendering an air of mystery, contemplating the finer points of a case. He also seems to possess Holmes’ innate ability to tell a person’s history from their appearance, but rarely does he explain how he arrived at the inference.

It doesn’t help that Mysskin’s Holmes is abusive, as well – and the director capitalises on what seems to be the current trend of employing brilliant-but-eccentric-and-arrogant male characters as leads, with curious bursts of morality. Kaniyan, who is well-muscled, and adept at flooring several Moriartys at once, rescues a woman from a pitiful existence; but when she seeks his help to earn a living, he unceremoniously pushes her inside the apartment, and hands her a mop. He yells, abuses, and is at his disrespectful best when addressing her, and yet strangely, she grows more adulatory of him, eventually becoming his romantic interest. A direct contrast to Holmes’ admiration and love for Irene Adler, the only woman, the only person to have ever outwitted him in the series, his arch-rival Moriarty notwithstanding.

*****

Several scenes in Thupparivalan are eerily reminiscent of Pisaasu. In a particular frame, Mysskin plays with positions, employing abrupt jump cuts for visual drama. Vishal, still brooding, appears and disappears at will within the frame. During an instance, he’s seen at the far end of screen, and in the next, he is ‘jumped’ up front.

Mysskin’s love for empty spaces is something that he channels in Thupparivalan as well, with shots that build suspense and skim intimately over surfaces – which even when irrelevant – make for good cinema. In a particular instance, the camera – positioned at a low angle – drifts slowly over the number plate of a car, which seems to be a subject of interest, until it comes to rest on someone crouching next to it.

The tale as such, is a web of intrigue which gets thicker and thicker until it becomes difficult to ascertain where it all ties together. When a little boy approaches Kaniyan Poonguntran to trace the person who murdered his dog, little does Kaniyan suspect that it would lead him on a completely different trail of interwoven conspiracies. Mysskin renders a distinctly pulpy flavour to the film by inventing a fantastical subplot, and trying to base it in ‘criminal science’ – something that Tamil writers had come up with decades ago. Indeed, in another show of attribution, Mysskin names his influences – in a wink at himself and the unassuming audience. He makes his characters introduce themselves as Stanley Kubrick, Shankarlal and Karl Marx, in well-spaced sequences.

Mysskin also seems to live vicariously through Vishal; he makes him consult thick tomes from his towering bookshelf – which often appears in sharp relief, a character on its own – and, imbues him and others with traits characteristic of his films. In its final moments, as Holmes emerges victorious once again after a prolonged case of whodunit, Mysskin’s Moriarty – all unintended hilarity in what is propped up to be an emotionally-charged scene – apologises to the little boy for killing his dog. But then, he is not Moriarty; he’s ‘devil’, and his rival isn’t Holmes, but Kaniyan Poonguntran.

Alma Mater: TCE, Madurai

When did you first realize engineering wasn’t for you?

I never felt that way. The pull of cinema was more than that of engineering, that’s it.

How many arrears? Come on, don’t be shy.

Oh no. That’s dangerous territory.

Are your art directors better at drawing than your engineering drawing professor?

No comment. Some of my college professors are still in touch with me.

BL Theraja and AM Jain, do you still have nightmares about them?

They were my dearest friends. One of these days I would want to make a film about the men that write these books and the people that curse them. Would be a thriller, I think.

If you could make a movie about your college, what would the premise be?

I read somewhere that college life is the last place where true freedom can be achieved. After that phase, all our ideals and morals disappear. I have always wanted to explore that thought further.

How many times were you reprimanded for speaking to a member of the opposite sex?

None

Did you perform during college culturals? Best performance?

Uh..No, No. Namakku performance lam varadhu. Have directed stage plays though.

Best Memory about college

Oh, countless. It was the last period of life where I was dedicated to learning

Did you get a placement job when you graduated?

Yes I did. I worked for a good three years before I left it behind to do Naalaya Iyakkunar.

‘Game Of Thrones’ Season Eight To Have Multiple Endings To Avoid Leaks

The makers of popular American fantasy series Game of Thrones have decided to shoot multiple versions of the ending of the upcoming season eight in order to avoid any chances of leaks.

As the episodes of the show have been leaked on numerous occasions earlier, HBO’s president of programming Casey Bloys says the makers will shoot different endings to the eighth and final season, reports aceshowbiz.com.

“I know in Game of Thrones, the ending, they’re going to shoot multiple versions so that nobody really knows what happens,” Bloys told The Morning Call newspaper.

“You have to do that on a long show because when you’re shooting something, people know. So they’re going to shoot multiple versions so that there’s no real definitive answer until the end,” Bloys added.

Game of Thrones season eight will reportedly go on the floors in October.

Weekend Watch: ‘Thupparivaalan’, ‘Magalir Mattum’, ‘Simran’, And More

Kangana Ranaut’s Simran, after much drama and confusion, is finally releasing. So is Bramma’s Magalir Mattum, a sort of comeback film for Jyothika. Mysskin’s Thupparivaalan, too, with a rather odd choice (Vishal) as the hero. Here’s a quick look at all the top releases this week:

Simran

Simran is directed by Hansal Mehta. The film landed in controversy after its scriptwriter (Apurva Asrani) wrote a Facebook post in which he attacked Mehta and Kangana Ranaut. Asrani took offence to the fact that Ranaut was offered additional writing credit in the film.

Ranaut will play a 30-year-old divorcee, Praful, in the film, which was primarily shot in Atlanta (US) and narrates the story of a spunky girl with a gambling addiction.

Lucknow Central

Nikhil Advani’s production Lucknow Central stars Farhan Akhtar and Diana Penty. A prison escape movie, directed by Ranjit Tiwari, the film is about how Kishen Mohan Girhotra from Uttar Pradesh gets accused of murder which lands him in Lucknow Central Jail. NGO worker Gayatri Kashyap, played by Penty, must now form a music band among the prisoners.

The film’s music is by Arjunna Harjaie, Rochak Kohli, and Tanishk Bagchi. The film’s team had even performed a few songs from the film at a real jail recently for a promotional event.

Magalir Mattum

Director Bramma’s film, starring Jyothika, Saranya Ponvannan, Urvashi and Bhanupriya, explores the concepts of women empowerment and feminism through the lives of these four women who go on a road trip. The movie is jointly produced by Suriya under his 2D Entertainments with Christy Pictures, and Santhosh Narayanan is the music composer.

The teaser for Magalir Mattum struck a chord with most women, and men too. Social media was full of photos of men making dosais for their wives. The film’s producer, actor Suriya, made one for his wife Jyothika, the star of the movie. In an exclusive interview with Silverscreen, Bramma spoke of how the story came to him.

“Even today, I get goosebumps when I think of how something I read years ago stayed alive in the mind and emerged out of hibernation when I needed it the most,” he tells us.

The film’s music is by Ghibran.

Thupparivaalan

Considering there is a lack of detective films in Tamil cinema, Mysskin’s crime-drama comes close, starring Vishal, Prasanna, Anu Emmanuel, and others. Vishal’s role is a Sherlock Holmes-like character, and Prasanna plays a good cop, inspired by Dr Watson.

Billed a unique subject, the film has anecdotes from Subramaniya Bharathi and Mahatma Gandhi. Music is by Arrol Corelli, who made his debut with Mysskin’s Pisaasu. The song, ‘Ivan Thupparivaalan’ from Tupparivaalan, is based on Vishal’s character Kaniyan Poongundran.

Other releases:

Patel Ki Punjabi Shaadi, starring Paresh Rawal, Rishi Kapoor, Prem Chopra, Vir Das, and Payal Ghosh.

Yaar Ivan, starring Sachiin Joshi and Esha Gupta.

Actor Dileep Files Bail Plea For The Third Time

The Kerala High Court had rejected actor Dileep’s bail plea twice. The actor, who was arrested for his alleged involvement in the abduction and sexual assault of a popular Malayalam actress, has filed a fresh bail plea today in Angamaly court.

According to Manorama Online report, in the fresh application, Dileep has sought conditional bail. He has requested the court to release him on bail as he has only been accused of conspiracy, yet to be proved guilty by law.

Meanwhile, the release of Dileep’s film, Ramleela, which was delayed for a long time, will now hit the screens on September 28.

The film’s producer, Tomichan Mulakuppadam, announced the date of release on his Facebook page.

The film has actress Radhika Sarathkumar in a pivotal role.

‘Tumhari Sulu’ Teaser Out: Vidya Balan Channels Her Seductive Voice

Ever wondered what these enthusiastic RJs look like in real life? Exploring a similar theme, Vidya Balan’s Tumhari Sulu‘s teaser shows a regular, saree-clad woman with a hatke voice.

The teaser shows Vidya on a call while she’s in a gym surrounded by men working out. Since she plays a late-night radio show host, Vidya tries out her seductive voice much to the excitement of the men.

This isn’t the first time she’s playing an RJ though, the last time being Raju Hirani’s Lage Raho Munnabhai.

Directed by Suresh Triveni, the film also stars RJ Malishka, Manav Kaul and Neha Dhupia. The film is slated to hit the theaters on December 1.

Vishal & Team Help Track Administrator Of Movie Piracy Website

Vishal in Thupparivalans press meet, which was held a month ago, said that he is close to curbing piracy and one major person associated with the racket would be caught soon. Gauri Shankar, alleged administrator of Tamil Gun website, was arrested by the Triplicane police on September 12.

Addressing the media, Vishal said, “We have caught a key person involved in movie piracy. He is under investigation now. We will divulge more details later.”

Vishal and his team helped track the alleged administrator. According to an official press statement from the council, “With the help of technical experts, we started tracing the piracy website administrators, we find out about Gauri Shankar, collected details about him and submitted a report to the police and filed a case. We also came to know that these piracy websites people are involved in child pornography, too.  We also got to know about their collaboration with Arumugasamy, a London-based administrator. After police investigation, we will get more details.”

Meanwhile, with the release of Thupparivaalan, directed by Mysskin, Vishal has announced that one rupee from every single ticket price of each and every show, would be collected and donated to farmer’s welfare.

Thupparivaalan has released over 350 screens across Tamil Nadu.

Emmy Special: Why The Under-Appreciated ‘Silicon Valley’ Deserves More Credit

At first, the painfully awkward male lead of Silicon Valley doesn’t inspire any real interest. Thomas Middleditch is a geek/nerd in this HBO series about the start-up culture in Silicon Valley. While working what is essentially a drudge job at Hooli, he stumbles upon a ‘revolutionary data compression algorithm’. Suddenly, he’s propelled into another level altogether.

Hendricks, though, is no green youth. He holds on to his algorithm, and decides to fully develop it with his friends at the incubator run by Erlich Bachmann (a brilliant TJ Miller). What sets apart Hendricks from the rest, is his sheer nerve and willingness to always play fair. As a fairly new start-up with game changing technology, Hendricks’ Pied Piper is in the sights of men and women with unlimited wealth. As such, Hendricks finds it hard to execute things the way he wants when he wants to. There’s palpable frustration and a whole lot of roadblocks, but the team braves them all to find their way eventually – helped along by a whole lot of ‘masturbation’ gags and the strange mother hen tendencies of Donald Dunn aka Jared (Zach Woods).

via GIPHY

Silicon Valley is a satirical look at the tech industry, and offers sharp, up to date commentary on the goings on in Silicon Valley. One of its key attributes is the way it has kept in touch with the developments in the tech world, allowing it to fully capture the good and the bad. But by far, despite a solid four season run, Silicon Valley remains one of the most underrated comedy shows out there. Flashier series like Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and Master of None are likely to reign supreme, in part due to Silicon Valley’s niche humour.

Written by Alec Berg and Mike Judge, Silicon Valley is what The Big Bang Theory could be. It wears its nerd status proudly, and offers the audience a rare peek inside the world of tech giants and the million Davids who rise up to battle them time and again.

It Is A Delight To See Women Working Harder Than Men On Set: Amitabh Bachchan

Amitabh Bachchan, who is currently busy with his upcoming film Thugs Of Hindostan, says he finds it great to see many women on the set working harder than men.

Amitabh took to his blog to share an update about the film and says that he is delighted to see so many women working on sets.

“The progress on Thugs Of Hindostan continues unabated and there is much to be written about, but confidentiality coerces me to preclude you to such observations and so the silence… silence outside, but inside it is a loud and active audience working on the film in various degrees and folds. Nice…shows the strength of pre-production,” Big B wrote on his blog.

The 74-year-old actor added: “And in particular a great delight to find so many women on set working harder than the men, in a job which one could never have dreamt about in our times.”

Thugs of Hindostan also stars Aamir Khan, Katrina Kaif and Dangal fame Fatima Sana Sheikh. The film is directed by Vijay Krishna Acharya.

Miya George Says That Her Telugu Debut Was A ‘Pleasant’ Experience

Malayalam actress Miya George, who is making her Telugu debut with forthcoming romantic-comedy Ungarala Rambabu, says being part of the project has been a pleasant and learning experience.

In the film, directed by Kranthi Madhav, she is paired with Sunil.

“This is a film with lot of positive energy. I was quite impressed by Kranthi’s narration and I immediately said yes to the project. Being part of this project has been a pleasant experience and it made my foray into Telugu filmdom memorable,” Miya told IANS.

She plays a character called Savitri.

“She’s not a typical heroine. Her character has been written with a purpose and that’s what got me excited. In the second half, my character changes with the situations and I liked how Kranthi has treated her transformation,” she said.

Asked how she managed with the language barrier, she said: “My director and Sunil helped me with my dialogues. They would narrate a scene and let me understand it fully and only then will we shoot. I still don’t know Telugu but if not for their support, I would’ve had a very tough time.”

The actor is open to doing more Telugu projects.

Actress Priyanka Chopra Is A Presenter At This Year’s Emmys

Indian actress Priyanka Chopra has joined the list of presenters like Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Shailene Woodley and Matt Bomer for the 69th Primetime Emmy Awards.

Priyanka, who rose to fame in the West with her TV show Quantico, will be attending the annual award gala for the second time. Last year, she presented an award with actor Tom Hiddleston, and was applauded for her fashion sense as she opted for a red chiffon dress and twirled around at her debut appearance.

Priyanka hasn’t been nominated in any category for the Emmys this year.

Alexis Bledel (The Handmaid’s Tale), Dave Chappelle (Saturday Night Live), James Corden (The Late Late Show), Melissa McCarthy (Saturday Night Live), Seth MacFarlane (Family Guy), and Gerald McRaney (This Is Us) already won various Emmys when the Creative Arts awards were announced last weekend. And they will return to the main stage to present various statuettes at the ceremony, reports ew.com

This year’s Emmy Awards will be broadcast live from the Microsoft Theater here. Stephen Colbert will serve as host.

Priyanka Chopra Calls Sikkim An ‘Insurgency State’; Gets Slammed On Social Media

Bollywood actress Priyanka Chopra, who has produced a Sikkimese film Pahuna, has ruffled feathers in the hilly state by calling it an insurgency-troubled land. Netizens have slammed her for ignorance and for being “politically illiterate”.

The National Award winning actress spoke about Sikkim in an interview to ET Canada at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) while discussing her production Pahuna: The Little Visitors, which premiered at the gala.

“This is a Sikkimese film. Sikkim is a small state in the Northeast of India which never had a film industry or anyone who made films from there. And this is the first film ever that’s come out of that region because it’s very troubled with insurgency and troubling situations,” Priyanka said in the interview.

The remark was immediately slammed on Twitter.

Incidentally, Priyanka is the tourism ambassador of Assam, one of the sister states in Northeast India.

Pahuna..., directed by first timer Paakhi A. Tyrewala, was launched as an association between Priyanka and her mother Madhu Chopra’s banner Purple Pebble Pictures and Ministry of Tourism Sikkim.

“This is a film about two kids and the refugee crisis they face…,” Priyanka described the movie.

Ugen Gyatso, the tourism minister of Sikkim, condemned Priyanka Chopra’s statement and had sought an apology from the actor.

Her mother Madhu Chopra spoke to Ugen Gyatso, the tourism minister of Sikkim to apologise for the comment.

“Her mother spoke to me over phone and has apologised for the comment,” Ugen Gyatso, the tourism minister of Sikkim, told India Today Television.

Twitter Hails Jim Carrey As The Most ‘Woke’ Celebrity Around

A few days ago, at a red carpet event for the New York Fashion Week, funnyman Jim Carrey gave a rather bizarre interview to E Online. Talking about how “we don’t matter”, Carrey went on an existential rant about life, people, and the futility of all this.

Hovering around the host, Carrey is asked if he wants a date or someone, considering he has been wandering around the street. “No no no. I’m doing just fine. I just… uh there is no meaning to any of this. I wanted to find the most meaningless event I could join. You have to admit, it’s pretty meaningless,” he responds, baffling the host.

The actor continues to repeat how none of this really matters. “Celebrating icons? Oh boy, that is just the lowest aiming possibility that we could come up with. Icons. Do you believe in icons? I believe in personalities. I don’t believe that you exist but there is a wonderful fragrance in the air. I don’t believe in icons. I don’t believe in personalities. I believe that peace lies beyond personality, beyond invention and disguise. I believe we’re a field of energy dancing for itself. And I don’t care.”

Soon enough, Twitterati stepped in and gave their best reactions to Carrey’s existential interview.

Mental Illness Can Be Difficult To Deal With: Sinead O’Connor

Singer Sinead O’Connor, who had earlier attempted to commit suicide, says people with mental illness can be difficult to deal with.

The 50-year-old has revealed her mental health troubles have affected her relationships with her family members, reports variety.com.

“The fact that there’s such stigma about mental illness means that the illness doesn’t get talked about. It’s not easy for families of mentally ill people. We can be difficult,” O’Connor said.

A video was posted online last month in which O’Connor broke down as she discussed her personal troubles and suicidal thoughts.

Reflecting on the incident, she said: “I have been thinking about it for a year, actually. I thought about it for a year before I did it.”
