The film, Marvel’s first to feature an all-Asian lead cast and the 25th film in the MCU, follows Shang Chi’s (Simu Liu) path to self-discovery after his induction into the Ten Rings organisation. It features prominent actors including Awkwafina, Tony Leung, Meng’er Zhang, Michelle Yeoh, Fala Chen, and Ben Kingsley, among others.

Shang-Chi earlier made $71.4 in its opening weekend and became the second-highest grossing film of the Covid era, just behind Black Widow, which made $80.3 million in its first weekend. However, while Black Widow opted for a simultaneous release in theatres and on OTT, Shang-Chi was an exclusive theatrical release.

In the US, Shang-Chi proved to be a hit during the Labor Day weekend, and is about to touch the $95 million mark.

The film also came as a respite for Indian cinemas that continued to face a dry spell even with big-banner films like Akshay Kumar’s Bellbottom only garnering Rs 3.54 crore on the first day.

Shang-Chi, which reportedly made good numbers on advance booking, especially at the premium chains like PVR that alone picked up a business of Rs 60 lakh, recorded a business of Rs 3.96 crore and 5.16 crore on its second and third days, respectively.

However, on day four, it saw a 50% drop in collections, with a net earning of just over Rs 1.5 crore. But this was an expected drop and follows the general trend in India.

The film has been lauded for its original story with characters like Shang-Chi’s father and the villain Leung being the highlight. However, the screen time given to Awkwafina’s character Katy and Zhang’s Xu Xialing has been a popular topic of debate online.

Shang-Chi is part of Marvel’s Phase 4 release slate that includes the upcoming films Eternals and Spider-Man: No Way Home.

The film currently has an IMDb rating of 8.

It is notable that other films like Fast and Furious 9, that became the first Hollywood film amidst the pandemic to collect over $500 million worldwide, failed to make a mark in India.
