According to a The Times of India report, the police team, led by Additional Commissioner Raghavendra K Ravi along with inspector Sundar, have nabbed two men on Tuesday, who had posed as the actor and cheated the woman.

The case dates back to early August when an online complaint was filed by Vidja, a Sri Lankan woman from Germany, who alleged that Arya had promised to marry her and had defrauded her of Rs 70 lakh under false pretences. In her complaint, which also included screenshots from WhatsApp conversations, she said the actor had requested the money citing financial struggle due to the Covid-19 induced lockdown.

After Vidja had filed the complaint, the Chennai city police began investigating the case. As part of the investigation, Arya was summoned before the cybercrime department and interrogated for three hours on August 10.

The two men who were arrested on Tuesday for impersonating as the actor and cheating Vidja have been identified as Mohammad Armaan from Pulianthope and his brother-in-law Mohammad Hussaini Faik. While the former had posed as the actor on social media, spoken with the woman and extorted money from her by promising to marry her, his brother-in-law had aided him in the scam.

The duo was caught at Perumpulipakkam near Ranipet, and the police also seized a laptop, two cell phones, and an iPad. They are currently remanded to judicial custody.

“I would like to thank Commissioner of Police, Chennai Police, Additional Commissioner of Police-Central Crime Branch and Cyber Crime Team of Chennai city for arresting the real culprit. It was a real mental trauma which I never expressed. Love to everyone who believed in me,” Arya wrote on Twitter, following the arrest.
