From Kerala To Kollywood; 5 Actors From Malayalam Who Are Ruling The Roost In Kollywood

Kollywood film industry has a long lineage of actors from other languages, making their entry and winning hearts of the audience, especially the Malayalam film stars. Two great examples are Mohanlal and Mammootty. Both these actors have made their mark in Kollywood through different genres of movies, like Iruvar for Mohanlal and Kandukondain Kandukondain for Mammootty.


Some of the contemporary generation of actors and actresses from Malayalam seem to be ruling the roost among the audience of Tamil cinema. The new generation lady superstar of Tamil cinema, Nayanthara started her career in her native language of Malayalam and Tamil audience’s favourite, Asin, was also a Malayalam actress first before she continued making films in Tamil.

Among the Malayalam actors who made their recent entry to Tamil cinema, Dulquer Salman is more popular than anybody else. He starred in the 2014 comedy drama movie Vaayai Moodi Pesavum and Mani Ratnam casted him as the main hero of the movie Oh Kadhal Kanmani. 

Here let’s take a look at the actors and actresses who recently made their Kollywood debut:

Fahadh Faasil

The National Award winning actor who is known for his realistic acting made his Kollywood debut in the movie Velaikkaran as the villain of the film. Fahad who won this year’s National Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in the movie Thondimuthalum Driksakshiyum is currently in the making stages of his next Tamil feature Super Deluxe. Directed by Thiayagarajan Kumararaja the film is a crime-thriller. Fahad stars next to Vijay Sethupathi and Samantha in the film. His debut movie Velaikkaran released this year was a hit and performed well at the box-office.

Nivin Pauly

Another important name in the list is Nivi Pauly. Though he appeared as the hero in the bilingual production Neram, the actor made his grand entry into Tamil cinema with the film Richie. A remake of the 2014 Kannada movie Ulidavaru Kandanthe, the filmis directed by Gautam Ramachandran. Nivin shared the screen space with Prakash Raj and Shraddha Srinath in Richie. Though the movie was special because the film is Nivin’s full-time Tamil movie but failed to impress the audience.  His 2015 romantic drama Premam was well received by the Tamil cinema audience.

Tovino Thomas

Tovino Thomas who won the hearts of the teenagers of Kerala is trying his hand in Kollywood now. In 2017 the actor becomes a part of some of the good, well-received movies in Malayalam including Mayanadhi, Godha and Ezra. Now with the Tamil-Malayalam bilingual movie Abhiyum Anuvum the actor is appearing before the Tamil film audience. The film stars Pia Bhajpai as Anu to Tovino’s character Abhi. The film is directed by BR Vijayalakshmi. He was seen in the music video production Ulaviravu next to Dhivyadarshini which was directed by Gautam Vasudeva Menon. He’s also acting in two other Tamil films which are in the filming stages now. One is Ondraga and the other is Dhanush starrer action movie Maari2. Tovino will be seen as the villain in Maari 2.

Aparna Balamurali

Maheshinte Prathikaram actress Aparna Balamurali is one of the actresses who entered Tamil cinema recently. She became part of the crime-drama movie 8 Thottakkal directed by Sri Ganesh and was casted next to Vetri. The film also saw two veteran actors from the industry, Nassar and MS Bhaskar. Aparna Balamurali was last seen in the Malayalam campus film B. Tech. She is currently in the production stages of her next Tamil film Sarvam Thaala Mayam. 

Arthana Binu

Arthana is the daughter of Malayalam actress Vijayakumar, who mainly appears as a supporting cast for the movies. Arthana’s career started with the 2016 comedy-drama movie Mudhugavu, next to Gokul Suresh, son of Malayalam actor Suresh Gopi. She was seen acting next to Vikranth and Samuthirakani in the 2017 crime drama Thondan. The film was written and directed by Samuthirakani himself. Her upcoming Tamil movies include Kadai Kutty Singam, Semma and Vennila Kabaddi Kuzhu 2.
