Weekend Watch: ‘Secret Superstar’, ‘Golmaal Again’, ‘Mersal’, ‘Meyaadha Maan’, ‘Chennaiyil Oru Naal 2’

For Deepavali, in Tamil Nadu particularly, the biggest release would have to be Atlee’s Mersal, starring Vijay. The film released on Wednesday amid much fanfare. At the same time, Secret Superstar and Golmaal Again are Bollywood’s contribution to Diwali this year.

A look at this week’s releases:

Mersal (Tamil)

Mersal is an action entertainer, directed by Atlee and has a star cast of Vijay, Samantha Ruth Prabhu, Kajal Aggarwal, Nithya Menen, Vadivelu, and S J Suryah. With music by AR Rahman, it has the distinction of being Thenandal Film’s 100th project.

Speaking to Silverscreen about his role, Vadivelu said: “I have a substantial role in Mersal and not just a comedy track. It’s more of a supporting role. Like Kaavalan and Pokkiri, my scenes with Vijay have come out really well. I’m looking forward to the reaction of the audience.”

The film also had a grand audio launch last month, star-studded and with Rahman performing songs from the film.

A crime-thriller written by Rajesh Kumar and directed by JPR, the film stars R Sarathkumar, Suhasini, and Napoleon. The film is a sequel to the 2013 film, Chennaiyil Oru Naal.

The film is adapted from a novel written by crime writer Rajesh Kumar, and focuses on events that happen over the course of one day. Two guys who struggle with the forces of ‘good’ and ‘evil’, explore the psychological secrets that most people tend to bury deep within their conscience.

Music is by Jakes Bejoy and the film is produced by PK Ram Mohan.

Secret Superstar (Hindi)

At the screening of Dangal, we caught a glimpse of the ‘secret superstar’: the teaser of the movie was screened during the interval without revealing the face. But having just watched her on screen, doe-eyed yet feisty, it wasn’t difficult to place Zaira Wasim even with a burqa on.

Playing Insu, a young girl who is forbidden from playing the guitar owing to a strict father, she resorts to becoming a YouTube sensation playing and singing under the veil of a burqa.

The film also stars Aamir Khan, who plays Shakti Kumarr as a very flamboyant music director. The film is directed by Advait Chandan and produced by Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao, with music by Amit Trivedi and distributed by Zee Studios.1
