Kangana Ranaut’s Simran, after much drama and confusion, is finally releasing. So is Bramma’s Magalir Mattum, a sort of comeback film for Jyothika. Mysskin’s Thupparivaalan, too, with a rather odd choice (Vishal) as the hero. Here’s a quick look at all the top releases this week:
Simran
Simran is directed by Hansal Mehta. The film landed in controversy after its scriptwriter (Apurva Asrani) wrote a Facebook post in which he attacked Mehta and Kangana Ranaut. Asrani took offence to the fact that Ranaut was offered additional writing credit in the film.
Ranaut will play a 30-year-old divorcee, Praful, in the film, which was primarily shot in Atlanta (US) and narrates the story of a spunky girl with a gambling addiction.
Lucknow Central
Nikhil Advani’s production Lucknow Central stars Farhan Akhtar and Diana Penty. A prison escape movie, directed by Ranjit Tiwari, the film is about how Kishen Mohan Girhotra from Uttar Pradesh gets accused of murder which lands him in Lucknow Central Jail. NGO worker Gayatri Kashyap, played by Penty, must now form a music band among the prisoners.
The film’s music is by Arjunna Harjaie, Rochak Kohli, and Tanishk Bagchi. The film’s team had even performed a few songs from the film at a real jail recently for a promotional event.
Magalir Mattum
Director Bramma’s film, starring Jyothika, Saranya Ponvannan, Urvashi and Bhanupriya, explores the concepts of women empowerment and feminism through the lives of these four women who go on a road trip. The movie is jointly produced by Suriya under his 2D Entertainments with Christy Pictures, and Santhosh Narayanan is the music composer.
The teaser for Magalir Mattum struck a chord with most women, and men too. Social media was full of photos of men making dosais for their wives. The film’s producer, actor Suriya, made one for his wife Jyothika, the star of the movie. In an exclusive interview with Silverscreen, Bramma spoke of how the story came to him.
“Even today, I get goosebumps when I think of how something I read years ago stayed alive in the mind and emerged out of hibernation when I needed it the most,” he tells us.
The film’s music is by Ghibran.
Thupparivaalan
Considering there is a lack of detective films in Tamil cinema, Mysskin’s crime-drama comes close, starring Vishal, Prasanna, Anu Emmanuel, and others. Vishal’s role is a Sherlock Holmes-like character, and Prasanna plays a good cop, inspired by Dr Watson.
Billed a unique subject, the film has anecdotes from Subramaniya Bharathi and Mahatma Gandhi. Music is by Arrol Corelli, who made his debut with Mysskin’s Pisaasu. The song, ‘Ivan Thupparivaalan’ from Tupparivaalan, is based on Vishal’s character Kaniyan Poongundran.
Other releases:
Patel Ki Punjabi Shaadi, starring Paresh Rawal, Rishi Kapoor, Prem Chopra, Vir Das, and Payal Ghosh.
