Actress Amala Paul and director Vijay were formally granted divorce on Tuesday. The duo were married in 2014 after four years of courtship. They announced their decision to separate in mid-2016.
Following the announcement, director Vijay’s father, producer AL Alagappan, blamed Amala for the rift, for which he received flak on social media. Public opinion tilted heavily in favour of Amala, largely seen as the woman who divorced a husband who would not support her career. Even though Vijay issued a press release to clarify things, the narrative had already been established.

After her separation, Amala has signed major big films including Sudeep’s Hebbuli, Dhanush’s VIP 2, and Thiruttu Payale 2. Vijay directed the surprise Deepavali hit Devi (L), and is currently filming Vanamagan.
