Actors Revathi and Shane Nigam will play mother and son in Bhoothakaalam, the upcoming Malayalam film, director Rahul Sadasivan told Silverscreen India.
The makers, on Thursday, released the only song from the film Raa Thaarame, written, composed and sung by Shane. Produced by Teresa Rani and Sunila Habeeb under the Plan T Films banner in association with Shane Nigam Films, Bhoothakaalam is presented by filmmaker Anwar Rasheed.
Speaking to Silverscreen India, director Rahul said that the post-production works have been completed and the film is gearing up for release sometime next year.
“Revathi and Shane play the lead characters in the film and they are from a middle-class family. The story follows their emotional journey in life. I thought it would be a unique blend of performance with actors Revathi and Shane on board as we have not seen such a combination. Besides, we have kept the film’s genre as suspense.”
About the genesis of Bhoothakaalam, Rahul said that he wanted to make a film with a strong plot and a performance-driven story. This, he says, is why he wrote Bhoothakaalam that explores how the mother and son duo cope with certain situations, the change of power dynamics at home and much more. Bhoothakaalam also features actors Shaiju Kurup, James Eliya, Abhiram Radhakrishnan and Adhira Patel.

The film’s screenplay is co-written by Rahul and Sreekumar Shreyas. “We finished the scripting process long back. However, when we were ready to approach the artists and production team, the Covid-19 pandemic hit the country. So the initial process was delayed by around 6 months. Later, when situation was a bit better, I pitched the story to actors and producers. They all connected with the story and expressed their interest to be part of the film,” he said, adding that the film was shot in and around Kochi between January and February this year.
While the film’s background score is composed by Gopi Sundar, Shenad Jalal has handled the camera and Shafique Mohamed Ali, the edits. Meanwhile, Shane has a bunch of projects in the pipeline including Veyil, Ullasam, Qualb and Qurubaani. Revathy who was last seen in Navarasa, the Netflix anthology, will be donning the director’s hat for the upcoming Hindi film The Last Hurrah and will play the lead role in a Hindi film titled Aye Zindagi.
