‘Sarkar’ Is The Biggest Deepavali Release in Kerala

Sarkar HD Stills Starring Vijay

Sarkar, with its 402 screen-wide release in Kerala this Deepavali, is set to become the biggest release in the state. According to trade analysts, the Vijay-starrer has already raked in Rs.3 crores from advance bookings alone.

Directed by A.R. Murugadoss, who is collaborating with the actor for the third time in six years, Sarkar has been produced by Kalanithi Maran under his banner Sun Pictures. Featuring A.R. Rahman as the music composer and Varalaxmi Sarathkumar in a supporting role, the crew of the movie has two Kerala connections in the form of Keerthy Suresh – the leading lady, and cinematographer Girish Gangadharan.

The movie is being distributed in Kerala by IFAR pictures that recently made the announcement.

The buzz generated in Kerala by the movie has been unprecedented. Interestingly, the tallest cut-out made for any star in the country, also came from a group of Vijay fans in Kerala from Kollam called ‘The Kollam Nanbans Fan Club.’

Karthika, another theatre in the state, had recently announced their decision to screen Sarkar throughout the Deepavali day on November 6. “We do plan to screen Sarkar for 24 hours on Deepavali day, which is 6 November. That means we will screen 8 shows back-to-back in 24 hours. We have 411 seats, and tickets are priced at Rs 100 and Rs 140. Vijay’s movies are big successes in this area and in all of Kerala,” said a theatre official.

Of late, the actor, as well as his movies, have been enjoying an increased popularity in the state. His previous film Mersal released in more than 350 screens and became the highest grossing Tamil film in the state. In the list of all-time highest grossing Tamil films in Kerala, Vijay’s movies occupy six slots. After Rajinikanth, Vijay is the actor who has entertained Malayalis the most,” says film critic Maneesh Narayanan.

Like his previous film Mersal, Sarkar too has had its own share of controversies when director AR Murugadoss was accused of plagiarism by an assistant director Varun Rajendran. However, the issues have been settled amicably and the movie will release as per schedule on November 6 on the Deepavali day.
