Six days into its release, Sarkar’s worldwide collection has crossed Rs 200 crore. This makes it Vijay’s second movie to enter the ‘200-crore club’ after Mersal’s box-office success in October last year.
Directed by AR Murugadoss, and produced by Kalanithi Maran, Sarkar stars Vijay who plays Sundar Ramasamy, a ‘corporate criminal’ who returns from the US to India. On election day, when he finds out that his vote has already been cast by someone else, he feels provoked to act. The film is about his need to be a true representative of people.
While Vijay’s actions and speeches in Sarkar, particularly those referring to freebies distributed by AIADMK in the past, have been mired in controversy; the film is a box-office hit. It released last week in over 3000 screens globally. Since Friday evening, following protests, a re-censored version is being screened across theatres. And, in Chennai alone, Sarkar’s collection has crossed Rs 10 crore, with Rs 1.76 crore collected on Sunday.

Reports also suggest that in the US, Sarkar is inching towards the $1 million mark that Mersal achieved last year by earning $1,830,866. Mersal was the fourth-highest grossing Tamil movie in the US, after Kabali ($4,585,808), Endhiran ($2,021,465) and Kaala ($1,913,110).
Sarkar‘s collection has already crossed Rs 6 crore in the US, Rs 3 crore in the UK, and Rs 2 crore in Australia.

The film’s makers have tweeted pictures from their success party last night. AR Rahman, AR Murugadoss, Keerthy Suresh, the female-lead, and others are seen at the party. The team also celebrated with a cake that had mixie and grinder-shaped icing on top, a reference to the scene with freebies that had to be censored.
