Tom Alter Quits FTII

Veteran actor Tom Alter has resigned from his position as the head of the Acting Department at the Film and Television Institute of India’s (FTII), after an altercation with students, who according to a Hindu report, criticised his “dictatorial style” and called him a “poor administrator”.

Following a scuffle with students outside the Director’s office, Tom Alter e-mailed a letter of resignation on 2 June (Thursday), stating that he was preoccupied with other commitments and unable to find time for teaching.

A 2008 Padma Shri awardee, Tom Alter has been a part of Bollywood and Indian theater for four decades. An alumnus of FTII, he voluntarily joined the institute as a faculty member in November 2014, and was teaching without a salary.

According to a Hindustan Times report, while FTII director Bhupendra Kainthola has confirmed the resignation, the institute was “trying to persuade [Tom Alter] to withdraw the resignation.” Meanwhile, Tom Alter has been unavailable for comment.
