Karnan: Dhanush’s Upcoming Tamil Period Film to Release in Theatres in April

Karnan, the upcoming Tamil period film starring Dhanush, will release in theatres in April, the makers of the film announced on social media on January 30.

The makers of the film also released a teaser of Dhanush’s character. The film is helmed by filmmaker Mari Selvaraj, who has previously directed award-winning Pariyerum Perumal (2018).

Speaking to Silverscreen India, Selvaraj said, “The announcement teaser that we released has some visual elements that I think, act as visual cues about what the film is about. This can be called a lifestyle film and as a director, I cannot say further, since I want the audience to see the film and take it in. Dhanush has been a comfortable actor to work it and is a boon for directors who is passionate about filmmaking.”

Karnan is produced by Kalaippuli S Thanu, while music has been composed by Santhosh Narayanan.

The film also stars Rajisha Vijayan, Lakshmi Priya Chandramouli, Gouri Kishan, Natarajan Subramaniam (Natty), and Yogi Babu.

Sharing the teaser on social media, Dhanush thanked Kalaippuli for releasing the film in theatres and said that the livelihoods of film exhibitors, distributors, and theatre owners depended on it.

Talking about the release date, Selvaraj said, “The exact date of release is not decided by the producers. It might release during the Tamil new year, but it is not confirmed yet.”

Earlier, Selvaraj had said that the film’s post-production was in progress and added that Karnan’s team did not want the film’s promotions to clash with Dhanush’s Jagame Thandhiram with Karthik Subbaraj.

Speaking to Silverscreen India, Sandy, who is the film’s choreographer said, “The dance is connected to the story, instead of being a separate element. There is a dance sequence that will be performed during death and Dhanush sir had danced for two BGM [background music] in it. He has perfectly combined it with accordance to the story. Unlike a commercial film like Pattas, which requires heavy dancing, or Rowdy Baby [dance number from Maari 2], in Karnan, the dance goes in parallel with the storyline.”

Talking about his first collaboration with Dhanush, he said, “He has seen me performing on stage and he has been very casual and friendly. He was impressed by me and was very supportive and encouraging.”

Sandy said that there were four songs in the film.

The film was majorly shot in sets in Chennai and in rural areas in Thoothukudi, Kanchipuram, and Tirunelveli in Tamil Nadu, the choreographer added.

Karnan wrapped up shooting in December 2020.

Tha Ramalingam, who has worked as the film’s art director said, “The film is set in Tirunelveli and is a period film, set in the 90s. We visited the place to understand the town and decided to build a set of a village with about 20 houses and two streets after the natural locations did not work out well. We started to prepare the set work in 2019 and made a miniature model. Since it would be easy to source props, we decided to make it in Tirunelveli itself. Keeping in mind that it is a period film, we took into account the details of small things such as items available in bunk shops to actors who were famous at that time, etc.”

He said that the 200 people took three months to build the sets, the work for which had started from October 2019.

Speaking about the challenges he faced, he said, “I am from Chennai and I know how to adapt to cultures of the neighbouring districts. However, since I am not aware of the culture in Tirunelveli, it was difficult to understand. A few names of the items are called differently there and it takes time to understand their culture and people. However, it became easy since Mari Selvaraj is from Tirunelveli.”

While Theni Eshwar was in charge of cinematography, editing has being done by Selva RK and lyrics have been written by Yuga Bharathi.

Karnan is latest addition in the list of films that are lining up for theatrical releases. This comes as a much-needed respite for theatre and cinema hall owners, who have been severely impacted by the losses brought about the Covid-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdown. Earlier this year, Vijay’s Master and Silambarasan‘s Eeswaran opted for theatrical releases.

Aranmanai 3 will feature actors Arya, Andrea Jeremiah, Raashi Khanna, Vishakha Singh, Sakshi Agarwal, Vivek, Yogi Babu, Kovai Sarala, Manobala, and Sundar C, among others in prominent roles. While Sundar C will reprise his role as Ravi from the earlier two instalments, Arya will be the new face to Murali’s character.

The film will be the third instalment in the Aranmanai series, which is a horror comedy film series. While the first film released in 2014, the sequel released in 2016. AMC Theater Saved From Bankruptcy After Reddit Users Initiate a Stock Buying Frenzy

AMC Theaters, an American movie theatre chain headquartered in Texas, saw a drastic increase in their stock which skyrocketed to almost 300%, saving the company from its recently filed bankrupt status, Deadline reported.

This bizarre jump in stocks happened recently after the stock purchase frenzy started by Reddit users. Following this, private equity firm Silver Lake sold its entire stake in the theatre chain for $713 million.

Due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic AMC, had to close down over 1,000 theatres and suffered heavy losses due to the rise in streaming service. According to ScreenRant, even on Monday, AMC, which was acquired by China’s Dalian Wanda Group in 2012, had earlier warned that it was on the brink of bankruptcy until a $1 billion fundraiser saved them.

According to the report in Deadline, Silver Lake Group converted $600 million worth of the theatre chain’s debt that it holds into stock at a conversion price of $13.51 a share. The report also mentioned that the investment firm had partnered with AMC in 2018 with a cash injection in exchange for $600 million in unsecured convertible notes. According to Investopedia, unsecured convertible notes are a type of long-term debt issued by a company that can be converted into shares of equity stock after a specified period.

A group of small or independent traders on a Reddit discussion board made a plan to drive up the share prices of struggling companies like AMC, GameStop, BlackBerry, and others. The hashtag #SaveAMC trended on several online platforms. According to Market Watch, shares of AMC, which were severely impacted during the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, rose by 600% this year.

Market Watch also reported that Silver Lake cleared a profit of roughly $112 million on Wednesday by selling 44.4 million shares. CEO of AMC, Adam Aron, told Market Watch, “Any talk of an imminent bankruptcy” is now “completely off the table”.

Kangana Ranaut to Play Indira Gandhi in Upcoming Political Drama

Kangana Ranaut, the Hindi actor who was last seen in Panga (2020), announced on social media on Friday that she will be portraying former prime minister Indira Gandhi in an upcoming political drama.

The actor confirmed that the yet-to-be-titled film will not be a biopic and that many other prominent actors will be a part of the film.

Ranaut, in a statement released by her office, said, “Yes, we are working on the project and the script is in the final stages. It is not the biopic of Indira Gandhi, it is a grand period film, to be precise a political drama that will help my generation to understand (the) socio-political landscape of current India.”

She posted a few stills of herself dressed as the late prime minister during a previous photoshoot by Jatin Kampani. However, she confirmed that it will not be the official look for the film.

She said that the film will be based on a book. There’s ben no information on which book the film has been based on.

The film will be directed by filmmaker Sai Kabir, who will also write the film’s story and screenplay. He has earlier worked with Ranaut in the 2014 crime comedy Revolver Rani.

The film will be produced by Ranaut under the Manikarnika Films banner.

Ranaut added that the film that will be a big-scale production. Besides featuring Morarji Desai and Lal Bahadur Shastri, the film will also feature members of the Gandhi family, including Sanjay Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi. The other cast members are yet to be announced.

The film will depict events that took place during the reign of Indira Gandhi, including Operation Blue Star (1984) and the Emergency Period (1975-77).

This is the second time that Ranaut is essaying a political leader. She is currently working on Thalaivi, an upcoming Tamil biopic based on the life of the late former chief minister of Tamil Nadu J Jayalalithaa, which is helmed by AL Vijay.

Pikchar With Rita: The Intimacy of Estrangement in ‘Aandhi’

Jee main aata hai tere daman mein sar chhupa ke ham rote rahe from the song Tere bina zindagi se koi shikwa nahi is one of the most tender lines in Hindi film songs, in my opinion.

When love has run its stormy course and assumes a mellow form in an older age, it acquires new and unstated forms of intimacy. Companionship and empathy replace the youthful struggle of love to establish its legitimacy with relation to ego.

It is these leftovers that make up the famous song from the film Aandhi (1975), remembered usually for its mischievous and masked rendering of India’s first lady prime minister Indira Gandhi. It is not the political ploy in Aandhi that interests me, for that is the most well known and obvious aspect. But Aandhi comes to mind as a relationship of an older couple- grey haired, somewhat tired and damaged by the world. It is to Gulzar’s credit that this love is not about being not able to live without someone, for there is no complaint about an absence – no shikwa – rather it is the changed meaning of life that the absence entails.

The gentle strings of the sitar, followed by the flute bring in Lata Mangeshkar at her most melodious. Unlike most songs, the visuals are understated since it’s the most accomplished pair of actors – Sanjeev Kumar and Suchitra Sen – who communicate so much through silence. This is not the age when you sing songs, but they play in your head, and it is to this interiority we are exposed. The relief to be able to cry unfettered, uncontrollably in the companionship of a gentle partner is a strange kind of desire. Or is it even desire?

Kishore Kumar’s voice as he sings Tum jo keh do to aaj ki raat chand dubega nahi is not about the male partner’s masculine strength in plucking the moon out of the sky, but of asking his partner to arrest time, extend the night, and make the stillness longer.

The same couple in their youthful days sing Tum aa gaye ho, noor aa gaya hai, nahin to chiragon se lau jaa rahi thi. If flames lose their heat and only presence brings radiance; it puts a heavy burden on being there, being with.

However, love becomes more expansive when intimacy is not about being there, but being able to cry on someone’s shoulder, of being held when long travels of life are conveyed.

A friend remarked to me, “I want to tell you things that I am not particularly proud of. But I want to be held at that time.” The intimacy of those words haunts me for it is neither sexual nor platonic, it is about being vulnerable in body and spirit.

That Sanjeev Kumar could have pulled off the role of being a husband who takes a step back to wait and watch the unfolding of political ambition and success in his wife’s life is also particularly appropriate.

The conjugality of Aandhi has more conviction even in its estrangement as tests the fundamental question of why we even need to be together.

‘Endhiran’ Plagiarism Case: Director Shankar Says News About His Non-Bailable Warrant is False

Shankar, the Tamil director who last helmed the 2018 film 2.0 starring Rajinikanth and Akshay Kumar in the lead roles, said that the reports about a magistrate court issuing him a non-bailable warrant was incorrect.

The Endhiran director put out a statement on Tuesday stating that the reference to the warrant had occurred due to “a glitch in the online court reporting” and it has been rectified.

Earlier, reports said that the Egmore Metropolitan Magistrate Court II had issued a warrant after the director repeatedly failed to appear in court in connection with a 2010 plagiarism case.

Writer Aarur Tamilnandan had filed a complaint stating that Shankar’s 2010 science fiction film Endhiran was a copy of his 1996 short story Jiguba, which was published in a Tamil magazine. The story was republished as a full-fledged novel titled Dhik Dhik Deepika in 2007.

Tamilnandan had first filed a complaint in 2010 at the Madras High Court. In June 2019, Shankar approached the court to quash the petition. However, the court dismissed his plea and observed that there was a case against him. The court, however, held that the film’s producer Kalanithi Maran had nothing to do with the story.

Shankar then approached the Supreme Court, which also dismissed his appeal.

In his complaint, Tamilnandan had stated that the plagiarism was a violation of the Copyright Act, 1957. He also alleged that the makers of the film had monetarily benefited from his idea. He had asked for Rs 1 crore as compensation, according to a report in The Times of India.

According to a report by the New Indian Express, the case has been ongoing in the magistrate court since 2017. However, neither Shankar nor his counsel has appeared in court.

Endhiran starred Rajinikanth, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, and Danny Denzongpa. The film, which released in Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi, remains one of the highest-grossing South Indian films of all time. It was produced by Sun Pictures and won three Filmfare Awards and two National Awards in the Special Effects and Production Design category. A sequel titled 2.0 was released in 2018.

‘CODA’ Film Bid: Apple TV Sets Acquisition Record of $25 Million, Highest in History of Sundance Film Festival

CODA, the American film that premiered on January 28 at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival, saw Apple+ TV landing the worldwide rights for $25 million at the first auction night of the festival, Deadline Hollywood reported.

The deal that saw Apple and Amazon bidding till the last leg, has set a new Sundance acquisition record as it broke Andy Samberg- Cristin Milioti’s Palm Springs record, that was acquired by Hulu/Neon in 2020 for $22.5 million.

CODA, acronym for Children of Deaf Adults, is written and directed by Sian Heder. The film that premiered on the opening night of the U.S. Dramatic Competition, is a coming-of-age drama about “a high school senior who is the only hearing person in her deaf family and is torn between holding together that unit or seeking her own dreams,” according to Deadline.

“I have been so moved by the outpouring of response to the film and am so excited to have found a partner in Apple that loves and deeply gets this movie, the spirit in which it was created and is committed to having this film reach the widest audience possible in a thoughtful and meaningful way. The whole CODA team is also so grateful to Sundance for being a part of the film’s journey. I hope that this film and Apple’s powerful support will help kick down some doors standing in the way of inclusion and representation and pave a path for more stories that center characters from the Deaf and Disabled community. The world has waited too long for these stories to be told. Now is the time. No more excuses,” Heder said.

The English remake of the 2014 French film La Famille Belier, CODA features actors Emilia Jones, Troy Kotsur, Marlee Matlin, Daniel Durant, Ferdia Walsh-Peelo, and Eugenio Derbez in prominent roles.

It is produced by Philippe Rousselet, Fabrice Gianfermi, and Patrick Wachsberger under the banners Vendome Pictures and Pathe Films.

The ongoing Sundance Film Festival, curated by the Sundance Institute, is being held in independent theatres and drive-ins across the USA as it opted for satellite screenings over its conventional venue of the Park City in Utah.

The line-up also has two Indian films featuring at the festival. While Ajitpal Singh’s Fire In the Mountains will be competing in the World Cinema Dramatic Competition, Rintu Thomas and Sushmit Ghosh’s Writing with Fire is one of the contenders in the World Cinemas Documentary category.

The festival commenced on January 28 and will go on till February 3.

Central Govt Allows Full Seating Capacity at All Cinema Halls

Seating capacity at cinema halls across the country has been increased to 100%, according to the latest  guidelines issued by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting on Saturday.

The notice followed the ministry’s order on January 27 and set down guidelines for surveillance of public places in the containment zones across the country.

The guidelines include ensuring physical distancing of at least six feet outside the auditoriums, availability of sanitisers in “preferably in a touch-free” mode, using face masks and following respiratory etiquettes such as “covering one’s mouth and nose while coughing/sneezing with a tissue/handkerchief/flexed elbow and disposing off used tissues properly”.

Entry and exit points should have thermal screenings to prevent asymptomatic individuals from entering, according to the guidelines. It must also dedicate “sufficient time interval between successive screenings on a single screen as well as on various screens in a multiplex should be provided to ensure row-wise staggered entry and exit of the audience”.

To avoid overcrowding, cinema halls have been advised to allow longer intermissions to enable audience to move in a staggered manner, and ensure that the timings of intermission do not overlap in the multiplexes.

Digital no-contact booking and payment methods “for tickets, food, and beverages, etc. by using online bookings, use of e-wallets, QR code scanners, etc” have been suggested. The number of food stalls can also be multiplied with foot markers to prevent overcrowding, the Ministry’s guidelines suggested.

According to the order, staff at theatres be trained in precautions “related to COVID-19, respiratory hygiene, hand hygiene, etc”. They must also ensure that they monitor their own health as well.

Lastly, in terms of air-conditioning and ventilation, the temperature should range from 24 degrees to 30 degrees Celsius and cross-ventilation should be encouraged. Re-circulation of air should be avoided as much as possible.

While these guidelines will be made effective from February 1, states like Tamil Nadu and West Bengal had already began functioning at full capacity since mid-January.

Love Review: A Tedious Film that Takes the Viewer for a Ride

Director: Khalid Rahman

Cast: Rajisha Vijayan, Shine Tom Chacko, Gokulan, Johny Antony

Love, a thriller directed by Khalid Rahman of Anuraga Karikkin Vellam and Unda, is a grim, flagrantly mediocre film made up of an excess of macro close-ups and slow-motion motion shots used to stretch the narrative out to clock the feature film length.

The film is built on a narrative conceit, too small and juvenile, the kind that makes for amateur YouTube short films. Worse, Rahman fails to create a plausible, let alone intriguing, narrative to contain it. Shot during the lockdown period in 2020, Love unfolds inside an apartment in Kochi. It opens to a violent confrontation between a young woman, Deepthi (Rajisha Vijayan), and Anoop (Shine Tom Chacko), her husband. Their verbal exchanges are muted. As the couple goes about hitting, stabbing and hurling things at each other, a piece of peppy music starts playing in the background, as though to drain out the deafening unimaginativeness of the scene. At the end of it, the man throws the woman to the wall. Her head hits an enlarged portrait of them in a romantic pose, spelling it out for the audience: their love story has ended in tragedy.

At the heart of the movie is adultery. But there is no real question or a meaningful examination of the subject, just longwinded conversations where the characters beat around the bush. While one can understand the spacial limitations the filmmaker must have had while making this film during the lockdown, there is no excuse for the utterly lacklustre dialogue lines in the film that sound impromptu. The male characters talk, mumble and occasionally fume about loving someone else’s wife, being unable to love one’s wife, and their wife’s decision to marry/love someone else.

In the perambulatory first half, a depressed friend (Gokulan) gulps down several glasses of alcohol and walks back and forth his decision to kill himself. There might not have been a more pointless and annoying character in Malayalam cinema since Mohanlal played Ittymaani two years ago.

The only actor who has a decent moment in the film is Johny Antony, who plays Deepthi’s father. The audience who haven’t given up and dozed off might feel gratified when he delivers a mighty slap on Anoop’s cheek and tells him that he is a good-for-nothing.

The Malayalam film industry, crippled by the year-long lockdown is in dire need for a revival, but there isn’t a lack of good content for a viewer, thanks to digital platforms. The filmmakers now have to deal with an audience who can afford to move away from mediocre big-screen content and choose better content online. In this case, Love, a cocky movie translation of a feeble idea, cannot compete with smarter and more efficient web shows. It has nothing significant to say. There are a handful of moderately gruesome images and a final reveal, but they can only do so much on its own.

Unlike Rahman’s previous films, which were characterised by a youthful passion for exploring an idea, Love is a poorly directed, boring movie. If anything must shock the viewer, it isn’t the murder mystery at its heart but its indifference towards the audience’s intellect.

Maha Samudram: Film to Release in Theatres on August 19; 40 % of Shooting Schedule Completed, Aditi Rao Hydari to Join in the Next Schedule

Maha Samudram, the upcoming Telugu film, starring actors Sharwanand, Siddharth, Aditi Rao Hydari and Anu Emmanuel, will release in theatres on August 19, makers of the film announced on Saturday.

Makers describe the film as a romantic action drama.

“It is an intense love story set in the backdrop of the port city Vizag (Visakhapatnam). The film is about the bond between two best friends (played by Sharwanand and Siddharth) from Vizag, the women in their life, and the intensity of love,” Praveen, editor of the film said, while speaking with Silverscreen India.

Maha Samudram is written and directed by Ajay Bhupathi, who has earlier directed the 2018 Telugu romantic action-drama RX 100. Raj Thota, cinematographer of the film, speaking with Silverscreen India said “In the first schedule, we have shot with all the leads except for Aditi, who will join us in the next schedule.”

Around 40 percent of the shooting schedule for Maha Samudram has already been completed, the film’s publicity manager Vamsi Shekar told Silverscreen India. The film is being shot simultaneously in Tamil and Telugu.

“So far, one schedule of shooting has been completed in Hyderabad and Goa. Around 60 percent of the shooting is remaining. From next month (February), shooting will commence again. In the next schedule, shooting will take place at Vizag, Goa, and Hyderabad,” he said. The film will also have elements of a ‘mafia film‘, he added.

Maha Samudram marks Siddharth’s comeback to Telugu cinema after eight years. Thota said that is a “huge responsibility” for the crew.

“The biggest challenge for me so far, has been having both Sharwanand and Siddharth in the same frame. While shooting with multiple heroes, we have to be extra careful about how each of them look on-screen and ensure that everything is in line with their respective character sketches. We also have to be mindful of their fans and what they want. Maha Samudram is also Siddharth’s comeback to the Telugu film industry and that is a huge responsibility for the film since it is like a relaunch for him here. In Maha Samudram, Siddhath’s character is raw and rustic,” Thota said.

“The film focusses on the intensity of emotions. We want to give the audience the time to understand the character’s emotions and relate to them. This is why although the rest of the film moves at a fast pace,  we have used long takes in scenes where raw emotions are being portrayed,” Praveen said.

“The DoP’s (Director of Photography) work has been good so far. He has presented Vizag in a way I have not seen so far. Being a gangter flick, the shades and colour tones he has used are very interesting,” Praveen added.

For Maha Samudram, music is composed by Chaitan Bharadwaj. The film is produced by Sunkara Ramabrahmam under the AK Entertainments banner. Kishore Garikipati is the executive producer. Praveen KL is the editor and Kolla Avinash is the production designer.

Shooting for Maha Samudram, which began on December 9 is expected to be wrapped up by April, 2021.

Noam Baumbach Will Exclusively Write & Direct Films for Netflix for the Next Few Years, Starting With ‘White Noise’

Noam Baumbach, director of the Oscar-nominated film Marriage Story, will be writing and directing Netflix’s adaptation of White Noise, Don DeLillo’s novel of the same, the streaming giant announced on Thursday. The film is the first project in an exclusive deal Baumbach has signed with Netflix.

“The writer and producer will exclusively write and direct films for Netflix for the next several years,” said a press release issued by Netflix on Thursday. Baumbach will produce White Noise alongside David Heyman, with whom he also produced Marriage Story.

Published in 1985, White Noise, winner of the US National Book Award for Fiction, 1985, “tells the story of Jack Gladney, his fourth wife, Babette, and their four ultramodern offspring, as they navigate the rocky passages of family life to the background babble of brand-name consumerism,” according to Goodreads.

“When I started in the film industry I dreamed of having a home.  It took me about 25 years but it was worth the wait.  I couldn’t be more thrilled to be making movies with Ted and Scott and everyone at Netflix, who are wonderful collaborators and friends and family,” Baumbach said in the press release.

Co- CEO and Chief Content Officer, Netflix, Ted Sarandos said, in the press release “For more than two decades Noah has been writing and directing some of the most personal and influential films in American cinema. When we started to work together almost 4 years ago, he immediately felt like family and I’m thrilled we’re finally making it official.”

Baumbach’s first film with Netflix was in 2017 with The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected) starring Adam Sandler, Ben Stiller and Emma Thompson, which premiered at the Cannes International Film Festival that year. His next, Marriage Story, starred Adam Driver, Scarlett Johansson and Laura Dern and was nominated for six Academy Awards in 2020. The film won Dern the Academy award for Best Supporting Actress.

Shooting for White Noise will begin later this year.

‘Aelay’ Normalises Dysfunctional Families: Director Halitha Shameem of Sillu Karupatti Fame Talks About her Next Film Ahead of its Release

Halitha Shameem of Sillu Karupatti fame, released the trailer of her upcoming Tamil film Aelay, on Tuesday. “The story revolves around the rocky relationship between an ice cream vendor and his son” Shameem said, speaking exclusively with Silverscreen India.

Shameem, who has both written and directed the film, said she first began working on the story  in 2009. “It was the first story I wrote when I wanted to get into filmmaking,” Shameem said.

“The story is about a son who attends the funeral of his father whom he dislikes,” she explained and added, “In the trailer, the father asks the son if he will cry at his funeral and the son says, “How can I cry at your funeral?” The story is about what happens at the funeral-does the son cry?”

Shameem added that films tend to portray relationships in a fancy manner and only show the good sides. “Love may be glorified in films. But in reality there are a lot of problems when it comes to relationships. There are a lot of people who will compare their love lives to those shown in films and feel bad for it. When movies like Kumbalangi Nights are made, we are told that it is okay to have a family like that. Such films normalise the issues,” she said.

Aelay features actor Samuthirakanni as Muthukutty – a playful popsicle vendor, and Manikandan of Kaala fame as his son.

Speaking about the rest of the cast of her film, Shameem said that most of the supporting characters were played by the residents of Manjanaickenpatti village, where the film was shot.

“We stayed with them, learned more about their skills and strengths and let them be their natural selves in the film. We taught them the dialogues and showed them how to act. The villagers were very supportive,” she said and added, “Many of them are above the age of 80 but they even took part in the night shoots. An entire village has acted in this film.”

According to Shameem, it was easy to convince the villagers to act in her film as her hometown is close to Manjanaickenpatti and she “knew the local dialect very well”.

“The villagers have no source of entertainment. They will finish farming and be idle. So I kept them engaged for two months – one month for preparing and one month for shooting. This was a huge entertainment for them,” she said.

Calling Manjanaickenpatti a beautiful village, Shameem explained that she chose to shoot there because of how “pretty and neat” it looked. She said, “I really liked the organisation of the houses in the village as they followed a colour code similar to Jaipur- the houses in the village were painted with a royal blue colour.”

Speaking about the film’s release in theatres, Shameem said “It is not a small-budget film. So many people have been involved in (making) the film. There are a lot of characters and locations. To draw people to theatres, distributors need feel-good films. Aelay fits that bill,” she said.

Expressing her sorrow over the death of Sree Ram, the Krav Maga instructor and actor known for his role in her film Sillu Karuppatti, Shameem said, “Even when the trailer (of Aelay) released, I was expecting a post or a message from him. I have to constantly remind myself that he is no more.”

After the release of Aelay, Shameem will work on her other upcoming film Minmini. She recently walked out of, Navarasa, Netflix’s nine-film Tamil anthology that she was originally a part of, due to the “pressure of working on several films” simultaneously.

Aelay will release in theatres on February 12.

Producer Boney Kapoor Upset Over Rajamouli’s ‘RRR’ Release Date, latter’s producer calls it unfair

Boney Kapoor, the film producer who is best known for producing films like Mr. India, Judaai, and Wanted, calls the decision of the makers of SS Rajamouli‘s RRR to release their film on October 13 “unethical,” while the latter’s producer D.V.V. Danayya, as told to Deccan Chronicle, stressed that everyone has their own plans when it comes to release dates.

Kapoor was referring to the two highly-anticipated, big budget films releasing around the same time. The Telugu period drama, Roudhram Ranam Rudhiram (RRR), will release on October 13, the makers announced on Monday. However, Hindi film Maidaan, produced by Kapoor, will release on October 15, which was announced on December 12, 2020.

“What they have done is fully unethical and immoral, knowing that Ajay Devgn will be acting in both films, to go ahead and announce the date, is immoral,” he told Silverscreen India.

“We had announced the date almost eight weeks earlier, sometime around in December [2020]. The problem is that when two big films are likely to clash, there is a friction between producers and the better way is that one of them alters the date. Now, it is apparent for all the producers to ensure that revenue is optimised in these difficult times. We haven’t yet got over the Covid situation in the country. Markets are affected and they are depleted. If two major films release on the same date, we will be eating into each other’s business,” he said.

To this, Danayya reponded saying, “If you look back, our original release date was in July 2020, and then it became January 2021. But because of the pandemic, we had to postpone the release indefinitely. After having put in so much effort, and with uncertain shooting schedules, we have finally locked the release date as October 13 for Dasara.”

Referring to past incidents of big-budget films releasing on the same day, especially during festive seasons, Kapoor said that “those were better times”. While Danayya felt that “since Telugu audiences and people across the country celebrate it, we feel the festivities would be incomplete without a film’s release.”

Kapoor said that he couldn’t contact RRR‘s producer and has instead spoken with Rajamouli.

“I spoke to Rajamouli and he was busy in a shot and called me back. And he gave a very lame excuse, that it was the producer’s call and he has got nothing to do with it and that the distributor has been pressurising the producer,” Kapoor said.

“I have been in this industry for the past 40 to 42 years. Having made 40 films, there’s never been a time when a distributor could have forced me to release my film on a particular day. And more so, to Rajamouli whose last two films have done [a business of] a thousand crores. Any distributor would have the guts to tell him what date to release [his film]? They will be happy that they got this film for distribution. It is impossible for them to go and tell Rajamouli to release his film on that [particular] date. And Rajamouli’s film does not need an honorary [date]. His picture is big enough. He should realise that,” Kapoor said.

Danayya maintained his claim and told DC, “It’s not our call. They are the ones who have been constantly working on the release dates, in order to plan their logistics and other modalities. So it’s unfair to blame us for the release clash.”

Rajamouli’s Baahubali: The Beginning (2015) earned Rs 650 crore worldwide, while Baahubali: The Conclusion (2017) making a whopping Rs 1,800 crore worldwide, making it one of the biggest Indian films ever.

Asked what his next step will be, Kapoor said, “I will not shift not my date. My film has already been fixed on the date.”

Speaking about the financial impact of the films clashing at the box office, Kapoor said, “It is not the announcement of the release date. The clash causes the financial impact. Maybe 60% of the people would go to see his film and maybe, 40% would come for my film. But had it not been releasing together, all the 100% would have gone to him and maybe to me.”

On January 19, Irish actor Alison Doody, who stars in RRR, accidentally revealed the film’s release date on social media. While sharing an update on the shooting on Instagram, Doody wrote that the film will release on October 8. Although she soon deleted the post, screenshots started doing the rounds. Following this, on Monday, makers of RRR announced the release date.

While an OTT release remains an option, Kapoor said that feels that his larger-than-life films are made for the big screen.

“Films are made for big-screens, I believe. OTT is definitely an option but at this point, I am a supporter of the exhibitors and the theatre owners and in any case, my films are larger than life. They are planned and made for big screens. Unless I am pushed in the corner, I would be compelled, but as of now, my films are made for the cinema halls,” he said.

Maidaan is a biography of football coach Syed Abdul Rahim. Directed by Amit Sharma of Badhaai Ho, and produced by Zee Studios and Kapoor, it will release in four languages- Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam.

RRR is a fictional account of freedom fighters Alluri Sitaramaraju, and Komaram Bheem. Apart from Devgn and Doody, the cast features Alia Bhatt, Ram Charan, Junior NTR, Shriya Saran, Olivia Morris, and Ray Stevenson in prominent roles. Produced by DVV Danayya of DVV Entertainments, the film will release in five languages.

Silverscreen India reached out to the producers of RRR, but they were unavailable for comment.

Cinema Halls to Operate at Higher Seating Capacity as MHA Issues New Guidelines

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on Wednesday permitted cinema halls in India to operate at a higher seating capacity and issued a new set of guidelines for surveillance, containment and caution.

The revised Standard Operating Procedure for theatres will soon be announced by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (I&B) in consultation with the MHA and will be effective from February 1.

“Cinema halls and theatres have already been permitted up to 50% of seating capacity. Now they will be permitted to operate at higher seating capacity, for which a revised SOP will be issued by the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting in consultation with MHA,” the official guideline stated.

Speaking to Silverscreen India, Tamil Nadu Theatre and Multiplex Owners’ Association chief Tiruppur Subramaniam said that he was happy with the Centre’s decision. “Personally, I would like 100% seating capacity,” he said.

The decision to increase seating capacity at cinema halls comes days ahead of the announcement of the Union Budget 2021, which will be presented on February 1. On January 22, representatives of India’s multiplex chains, along with Bharatiya Janata Party MP Sunny Deol, met Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to seek relief measures to cover the heavy losses incurred by the entertainment industry during the Covid-19 related lockdown in the country.

According to Mint, theatre owners are expecting a waiver or reduction in power and maintenance charges, single-window licence for opening more screens, and cheaper financing options to open food courts on the premises.

After seven months of lockdown, cinema halls reopened on October 15 as per the Unlock 5 guidelines, which allowed them to operate at 50% capacity. However, theatres in Tamil Nadu and Kerala were the last ones to reopen with this capacity.

Earlier this month Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and West Bengal theatres sought to raise seating occupancy from 50% to 100% after Tamil Nadu issued orders on January 4 permitting theatres to run at full capacity. However, the decision was soon reversed after the MHA wrote to the Tamil Nadu chief secretary, asking the state government to withdraw the order.

Currently, West Bengal is the only state with theatres operating at full seating capacity.

Pushpa: Allu Arjun and Rashmika Mandanna’s Action Thriller to Release in Theatres on August 13

Pushpa, the upcoming Telugu film starring Allu Arjun and Rashmika Mandanna, is set to release in theatres on August 13, the makers of the film announced on social media on Thursday.

The film will release in five languages. While the film will be shot separately in Malayalam and Telugu, dubbed versions will be released in Tamil, Kannada, and Hindi.

This film marks the first collaboration of the lead actors. Written and directed by filmmaker Sukumar, the film is produced by Naveen Yerneni and Y Ravi Shankar under the banner Mythri Movie Makers. Music is composed by Devi Sri Prasad and Karthika Srinivas is in charge of editing. Miroslaw Kuba Brozek is the cinematographer.

Speaking to Silverscreen India, the film’s publicity manager Eluru Srinu said, “A total of 60 days of shooting is completed and about 30-40% is over. The team is currently shooting in the forest areas of Maredumilli near Rajahmundry in Andhra Pradesh.”

He said that the film is an action thriller, and added: “The film is set against the backdrop of smuggling of erra chandanam (red sandalwood) and is loosely based on true events. However, the film has added drama elements, family emotions to its storyline.”

He added that the film’s trailer will release in May.

Pushpa is another Telugu film that is heading towards a theatrical release, after the Covid-19 induced lockdown. Ever since Solo Brathuke So Better released in theatres on December 25, 2020, a slew of Telugu films lined up for theatrical releases, including Ravi Teja-starrer Krack, Ram Pothineni’s Red, that released on the occasion of Pongal earlier this month.

Other upcoming Telugu films that will release in theatres include Uppena (February 12), Varun Tej Konidela’s Ghani (July 30), and Seetimaarr. (April 2). Director SS Rajamouli‘s magnum opus Roudhram Ranam Rudhiram (RRR) (October 13), and Sundeep Kishan’s sports film A1 Express, (February 12) are also set to hit the screens.

Giving a much-needed boost to theatre owners, the Ministry of Home Affairs on Wednesday allowed cinema halls to operate at a higher seating capacity. Currently, theatres have been operating with 50% seating capacity.
