Mafia Review: An Indulgent Thriller Whose Sequel Will Perhaps Be More Engaging

Director: Karthick Naren

Cast: Arun Vijay, Prasanna, Priya Bhavani Shankar

Karthick Naren recently said, “Mafia is an engaging film, nothing-out-of-the-world”. When I heard it, I thought, ‘Why would anyone say this a few days ahead of the release of their work’? Especially considering all the trouble his previous stalled film (Naragasuran) has gone through. After watching Mafia I realise he’d made a fairly decent assessment of his work. He’s a pretty self-aware artiste, and that’s a rare gift he must strive to protect.

Mafia – Chapter 1 is a slow narrative filled with long shots, nods, searching eyes, silences and reaction shots. It works in many places to create a sense of tension, to help us really see the actors but at other times, it feels a bit too indulgent and in those scenes, you wonder what’s behind these vacant faces? They don’t seem to know what is going in (but maybe that is by design, we don’t know yet).

Aaryan (Arun Vijay) is a narcotics cop and wants to clean the city of drugs because he’s lost a brother to drugs. It’s easy to nab college students using drugs, or their small-time suppliers but the kingpin remains elusive. Arun Vijay is superb in action shots and is great to look at in these ‘thinking shots’ where he clenches his face and unclenches, moving muscles at will, to convey minor reactions. He’s also good at these vacant stares, that make him look baffled and where he doesn’t know what is going on. But in between these great shots, the rest of the film feels somewhat emotionally vacant, we feel disconnected from whatever is at stake. Aaryan and the film lack a stronger core and any hint of emotion. (Not like where’s a background sob story, but more like, we always see him reeling off instructions, even to his batchmates. When is he vulnerable? When is he taking instructions?)

Prasanna breezes through the frames without breaking a sweat as DK. It’s a credit to his skills that most roles that come his way make one think, ‘What a criminally underused actor. I wonder when someone will write a role that does him justice’. Here Prasanna has a lot of screen time, to slowly make his way through but again,  we don’t really know him. Though we see a lot of him. Priya Bhavani Shankar’s role is woven into the plot  which in itself feels like a leap for our action cinema, and she carries on admirably, non-fussy, with her work.

If Dhuruvangal 16 was remarkably restrained, Mafia Chapter 1 is over-the-top and not always in a good way. While  the music is almost a part of the film, in a few places it too goes overboard.

Arun Vijay’s Aaryan makes some progress by the end of the film, when a baffling revelation is made, sending him back to square one. That sets the stage for what looks like a promising second chapter.

Trance Review: Fahadh Faasil Is Charged Up, But The Film Is A Half-hearted Mess

Cast: Fahadh Faasil, Nazriya Nasim

Director: Anwar Rasheed

Trance, director-producer Anwar Rasheed’s first film in seven years and his most ambitious film yet, is about a young man with a haunting past and burning ambition, whose gift of the gab is put to use in a variety of professions, at first by himself and later by forces beyond his control.

Trance went into production in 2017, took three years to come to form, along with several alterations and additions to the screenplay and the cast over the period. Its promotional materials that slowly spilled into the public domain have been preparing the audience for an entertainer that uses everything cutting edge.

For one, the cinematography by Amal Neerad is so flashy that a camera equipment company would gladly use the film as its brochure. The film has in its crew the biggest names in various fields and a delicious set of actors led by Fahadh Faasil.

But in the end, Trance is a jumble, completely devoid of a soul.

The film begins moderately well. The opening sequence details Viju Prasad’s (Fahadh Faasil) life in a modest rented apartment in Kanyakumari, with his younger brother (Sreenath Bhasi).

Prasad, who comes from a broken family with a history of mental illness and self-destruction, doesn’t have much to keep his optimism afloat. But the man tries hard, investing all his energy into believing in cheap self-help books and dreaming about building a billion-dollar empire out of his lowly motivational speaking business.

After one bitter morning conversation, the younger sibling signs off (a well-staged scene), pushing Prasad further down into the muck. A fast-cut montage in this part well conveys the deep-lying mental trauma Prasad desperately tries to overcome.

When Viju Prasad is approached by a company, Tritech (a nod to the Holy Trinity), to use his speaking skills to build that billion-dollar company of his dreams, he is tempted. But there is a catch: the product on sale is salvation and the consumers, the believers awaiting the Son of God. Viju, an atheist, is unsure.

Trance isn’t the first Malayalam film to take the audience to the green room of the controversial faith-healing business that exploits gullible masses. Films such as Padmakumar’s God For Sale (2013) and Priyanandanan’s Bhakthajanangalude Sraddhakku (2011) have used this subject to make a social commentary, tracing the inner and outer journey of their protagonists with moderate success.

In Trance, Anwar Rasheed uses scenes of faith-healing to entertain the gallery. Faasil on the stage, screaming ludicrous messages to a sea of believers, is quite a spectacle. Like Ranveer Singh on cocaine, he paces up and down the platform, occasionally leaping into the crowd, spreading his arms like they are wings.

The film demonstrates how on-stage miracles are performed with the help of Bluetooth headphones, a crew on toes and actors posing as clients. The shot division and staging of these scenes are impressive, intense enough to induce a sense of claustrophobia.

But the narrative loses steam rather soon. The film unevenly oscillates between being a social commentary and a personal story of a man finding his journey. In the vaporous second half, the character-arcs turn ridiculous and the narrative gropes in complete darkness, struggling to find closure.

One of the prime issues Trance suffers from is its refusal to decode its protagonist. Viju’s transformation into a man blinded by his success doesn’t stick because seldom does the film give the audience a chance to see him in close-ups, especially during his ascent to the top of the business. It doesn’t try to explore in detail his tumultuous relationship with God and the men who changed his life.

In a rather incoherent scene, he shows signs of dissociative identity disorder. The sole objective of the scene seems to be an opportunity to use an advanced high-speed camera equipment ﹣the shot is flaunted in posters and teasers. There isn’t an attempt to link Viju’s troubled past and resultant psychological trauma to his present.

Instead of a good emotional narrative, the film gives the audience technical gimmicks and a loud, incessant background score (Jackson Vijayan and Sushin Shyam). Instead of well-written scenes, there are shots of the hero posing in top-end cars and suits.

The film’s act of virtue-signalling in the second half reeks of pretentiousness. Viju, now trying to find a meaning to his new identity as a Jesus-equivalent, finds his Mary Magdalene in a young girl from Mumbai who’s going down the path of drugs, alcohol, and self-destruction. But the film fails to establish a connect ﹣spiritual and emotional ﹣between the duo. There might even be a hint of romance in their affair but there is no warmth in their combination scenes.

Trance, evidently, cannot quite put its finger on the rights and wrongs of the situation. The faith-healers are greedy and corrupt, but what about the society that lets this business thrive? By creating easy villains out of a corporate company, the film bypasses a larger responsibility to analyze the big picture, of organized religions and the herd culture it propagates.

Nazriya, in her most unusual outing, plays Esther, a puerile girl with an exterior hardened by her bitter past. The role, thoroughly out of her comfort zone, exposes her limitations as an actor. Nazriya is in her element only when she is striking a pose like a model ready to walk the ramp. But when she has to express the brazen confidence and the complicated stream of thoughts of Esther, her performance falls flat.

Fahadh Faasil’s transgressive, hyperbole performance goes well with the film’s skimming the surface approach. In the absence of a great screenplay, he keeps the audience engaged. But there is no denying that the actor has delivered finer, more restrained performances of similar nature in Venu’s Carbon and VK Prakash’s Natholi Oru Cheriya Meenalla.

Rajamanikyam and Chotta Mumbai, the unabashed commercial entertainers Anwar Rasheed began his filmmaking career with, had a shine of sincerity. In spite of their cliche-ridden plot-lines, the director’s excellent sense of humour made a difference.

However, when it comes to Trance, his unmistakable ability to connect to the audience is absent. Humour is replaced with a lot of halfhearted darkness. In an amusing meta-level, Anwar Rasheed’s predicament mirrors that of Viju Prasad’s – of a man who is not sure where he belongs.

Five Songs By ‘Hiphop Tamizha’ Adhi We’re Listening To On His Birthday

Singer-composer-actor Hiphop Tamizha Adhi has grown from a small independent music artist, to the composer he is today, in a rather short time. As he turns 30, here’s a look at five songs we’re listening to on his birthday.

Pazhagihkalaam — Aambala, 2015

His debut film as a composer turned out to be extremely lucky for him with this song that topped all charts back then. The robotic voice and the simple lyrics made the song all the more big. Aambala is a Sundar C film starring Vishal, Hansika Motwani, Ramya Krishnan, Prabhu, Santhanam, and Sathish.

Theemai Dhaan Vellum — Thani Oruvan, 2015

A background score and song that complemented the freshly minted Jayam Ravi-Aravind Swami rivalry. All I ever heard from people back then was  ‘I am not bad, just evil’. Thani Oruvan is a Mohan Raja film also starring Nayanthara, Ganesh Venkatraman, Vamsi Krishna, and Jayaprakash.

Vaadi Pulla Vaadi — Meesaya Murukku, 2017

A song that brims with love and pain. He’s said that it’s a song based on of his own life, and has lent his soul to the song. Although it released as a single, it later also featured in his debut film (when he also turned director). It starred Aathmika, RJ Vigneshkanth, Vivek, Anbu Thasan and Sha Ra.

Neeyum Naanum — Imaikka Nodigal, 2018

A peppy melody that talks about the love a man holds for his better half. Just when you think it’s too melodious, Adhi surprises you with some wacky tunes to balance it. Imaikka Nodigal is an Ajay Gnanamuthu film starring Atharvaa, Raashi Khanna, Nayanthara, Vijay Sethupathi and Ramesh Thilak.

Hi Sonna Pothum — Comali, 2019

A throwback song about a boy and his crush in the 90s. It weaves in golis (marble), ice lollies, roll caps, ink bottles, and cycles… things that are not only nostalgic but also local. Comali is a Pradeep Ranganathan film starring Jayam Ravi, Kajal Aggarwal, Samyuktha Hegde, KS Ravikumar, Yogi Babu, and Sha Ra.

Kamal Haasan Offers Rs 1 Crore Aid To Kin Of Deceased In ‘Indian 2’ Accident

Kamal Haasan has just announced financial aid of Rs 1 crore to the kin of artistes who died in the accident on Indian 2 sets. Those fatally injured include Assistant Director, Krishna (34), Production Assistant Madhu (29) and Art Assistant Chandran (60).

“This amount is not enough for those who have lost their loved ones,” he said, “Accidents do not differentiate between rich and poor. I don’t want to discuss this today, but I would have also joined them (pointing inside the hospital). I was very close. Just four seconds before that the director walked ahead. The actress and I were very close by. Every single employee in the film industry must have insurance. What is the point of movies making 100, 200 crores if our people don’t have safety and insurance?”

The actor paid homage to the deceased at the hospital in Kilpauk.

The accident on the sets of Shankar’s Indian 2 last night around 9.30 pm left three dead and nine injured. A crane on which a heavy duty light was mounted came crashing killing three. Atleast nine were injured. The crew of the Kamal Haasan film was in EVP Film City in Nazarathpet.

Sahir Ludhianvi Biography: Rainbox Studios Acquires Adaptation Rights

2021 will mark the centenary birth anniversary of one of Hindi cinema’s most prolific lyricists, Sahir Ludhianvi (1921-1980). He is the man behind the words Kabhi Kabhi (from Kabhi Kabhie, 1976) and Abhi Na Jao Chhodkar (from Hum Dono, 1961), and more. His work endures on and is still enjoyed by fans across the subcontinent and the diaspora.

In 2013, award-winning author Akshay Manwani’s biography titled Sahir Ludhianvi: The People’s Poet, was published by Harper Collins. The book traced Ludhianvi’s journey right from his dysfunctional childhood to the point where he became India’s most celebrated songwriter with superhit songs in classic films like Pyaasa (1957), Naya Daur (1957), and Phir Subah Hogi (1958).

Published after five years of research, and involved readings, interviews, as well as detailed analyses of his film and non-film work the story is all set to come to the big screen, thanks to the rights acquired by Rainbox Studios.

The book is a comprehensive account that analyses the poet and his life through his work. Cinematic greats like Dev Anand, Yash Chopra, and Javed Akhtar were all interviewed for this book and have provided valuable insights into this enigmatic man’s life.

A poet who concerned himself with the world he lived in, Ludhianvi’s passion for social justice and communal harmony reflected in his words that appealed to the masses. He was a lone crusader of sorts to ask for the recognition due to lyricists in film.

In a statement released to the press, Ananth Padmanabhan, CEO, HarperCollins India, said, “We are delighted that this definitive book on Sahir Ludhianvi will now be visualised, especially since Sahir led such a remarkable and creative life. We can’t wait to see how this adaptation will materialise.”

Akshay Manwani, the author of the book, said, “The People’s Poet is the most intimate of my work. Sahir Ludhianvi continues to enthrall his fans, film enthusiasts, and poetry lovers to this day. The decision to collaborate with Rainbox Studios stemmed from the shared vision of how the story of this genius should play out for audiences the world over.”

MunnishPuri, Founder and CEO of Rainbox Studios, said, “As we approach Sahir Ludhianvi’s centenary year, we wanted to share this story of a troubled childhood not limiting one’s dreams. His is a timeless story, an inspiration for the youth.”

Ananya Panday Joins The Cast Of Puri Jagannadh’s Next With Vijay Deverakonda

Director Puri Jagannadh’s next film, being bankrolled by Karan Johar, will star Ananya Panday alongside Vijay Deverakonda. The director took to Twitter to welcome the actor to the ‘Pan-India’ production.

Ananya said, “Couldn’t be more excited to join a pan – India film. Thank you, for this opportunity! Looking forward to a super fun time on the set.” She thanked Karan Johar, Puri Jagannadh, and welcomed Vijay Deverakonda to Bollywood.

Vijay D in turn said, “And we warmly welcome you to the Telugu, Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam industries.”

The film tentatively titled Fighter is reportedly about a boxer with a stutter. While Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions is bankrolling the Hindi version, Puri Jagannadh and Charmee Kaur are bankrolling the south Indian versions under their banner Puri Connects.

According to a report in The Newsminute, “…Puri Jagannath is keen on roping in the legendary boxing champion Mike Tyson for a role in the film. The makers of Fighter will be approaching the legendary boxer and it needs to be seen if he will be accepting the offer. The film is likely to be another of Tollywood’s multilingual films, following Saaho and Sye Raa… Ramya Krishnan will reportedly play Vijay’s mother in the film. Ronit Roy, Vishu Reddy, Aali, Makarand Desh Pandey and Getup Srinu are also part of the cast. Cinematography will be handled by Vishnu Sarma. Accident In ‘Indian 2’ Sets Leaves 3 Dead; 9 Injured

An accident on the sets of Shankar’s Indian 2 last night left three dead and nine injured. A crane on which a heavy duty light was mounted came crashing killing three. Atleast nine were injured. The crew of the Kamal Haasan film was in EVP Film City in Nazarathpet.

Those fatally injured include Assistant Director, Krishna (34), Production Assistant Madhu (29) and Art Assistant Chandran (60). The film is being produced by Lyca. The makers said in a statement, “No words could ease what we truly feel. We are extremely saddened with the unfortunate accident that happened at the sets of Indian-2 yesterday (19th Feb 2020).”

According to a statement a police officer gave NDTV, “The men were inside the box-like structure on top of the crane when it crashed. It appears they were working on lighting for the shoot. The incident happened at 9:30 pm on Wednesday.”

More than my pain the grief of their family will be manifold. I take part in their anguish, as one of them. My deepest condolences to them.” He also said, “I met those injured and have spoken to doctors looking after them in the hospital. First aid has been provided and appropriate treatment is being carried out.  Let this night end with the hope that they will get better soon.”

A source told NDTV, “Kamal Haasan was at another location inside the complex when the incident happened,” while police were unable to confirm if Shankar was on the sets at the time of the accident.

The Newsminute reports that “an FIR was registered at 1.30 am. No sections have been included and no arrests have been made in connection to the deaths so far.”

The industry has reacted with shock with reactions and condolences are pouring in. Pa Ranjith, Kalyani Priyadarshan, Santosh Sivan, Rakul Preet are among those who’ve reacted.

The accident took place in EVP Film City in Nazarethpet. In September 2018, on the sets of Bigg Boss Tamil, which was also in the film city, a technician slipped and died.

‘Looop Lapeta’: Taapsee Pannu And Tahir Raj Bhasin In The Hindi Remake Of German Classic ‘Run Lola Run’

Taapsee Pannu and Tahir Raj Bhasin have been roped in for the official Hindi remake of the German thriller-comedy Run Lola Run titled Looop Lapeta. The announcement came on Tuesday morning from a tweet by Taapsee.

The film is being helmed by Aakash Bhatia who had earlier directed the second season of the Amazon Prime Original, Inside Edge. Vivek Krishnani’s Sony Pictures Films India, Tanujj Garg, and Atul Kasbekar’s Ellipsis Entertainment and Aayush Maheshwari are all bankrolling the film.

Run Lola Run (1998) helmed by Tom Tykwer featured Franka Potente and Moritz Bleibtreu in the lead roles. The movie is about a girl named Lola who only had 20 minutes to secure 100,000 Deutsche Marks to save her boyfriend, Manni. The film broke the traditional narrative pattern and gave the audience three possible scenarios for the same situation depending on her encounters. It is noteworthy that Taapsee’s recent Tamil-Telugu bilingual Game Over, directed by Ashwin Saravanan, also had a similar narrative.

Run Lola Run premiered at the Venice Film Festival in 1998 and later went on to win several international awards, including at the Sundance Film Festival, as well as seven accolades at the German Film Awards. It received critical acclaim and was also a commercial success that had wide international distribution. It happened to be the most successful German film of 1998, scoring $7 million at the US box office.

Looop Lapeta is a shining addition to our slate of clutter-breaking and compelling motion pictures. We love the amazing cast that has come on board to breathe life into this cutting-edge script,” said Vivek Krishnani, managing director, Sony Pictures Entertainment India to The Hollywood Reporter.

“We are emotional about this film, as it was the first to get green-lit at Ellipsis after our company was formed. When Aayush Maheshwari approached us with the remake rights, we agreed immediately and invested the better part of three years in working on various versions and drafts to adapt the German film to suit an Indian context,” said Tanujj and Atul according to a report on Screen Daily.

Looop Lapeta will commence with shoot in April of this year and is slated for release on 29 January 2021.

Mafia Will Be A Mainstream Entertainer, Nothing Out-Of-The-World: Director Karthick Naren

Mafia is all set for its worldwide release on 21 February. The film starring Arun Vijay is helmed by Karthick Naren and is being bankrolled by Subaskaran‘s Lyca Productions. Ahead of the film’s release, the crew met the press to speak about the film and to thank the team for their work.

The film also stars Prasanna and Priya Bhavani Shankar in pivotal roles. Taking the lead at the meet, lead actor Arun Vijay said, “I’ve been in this industry for 25 years now. It has been a challenging time for me. I went through a lot of hardships. It is my family, friends, media, and fans, who helped me get through it all and continue to give my best.”

Speaking of his role in his newest film, he said, “Mafia has a phenomenal plot that has such intense characterisation… This is Karthick Naren’s baby. We were able to do our jobs without any stress. My co-star Prasanna, who is also a fitness freak like me, is amazing in the movie. Priya Bhavani Shankar is a talented actress, she speaks Tamil too, so her transformation for this movie is something to watch out for. These days, it’s really hard to find Tamil-speaking heroines and she has gone through a complete transformation in character for this film. When I asked Karthick Naren, if I can watch some video rushes, he insisted I wait and watch the final theatrical version.”

Actor Prasanna said, “Arun Vijay and I didn’t have too many shots together, but after watching the movie, I was completely enthralled with the way Karthick Naren has materialised the script. Priya Bhavani Shankar is a beautiful, Tamil-speaking actress, who doesn’t miss out on exhibiting her wonderful linguistic skills in Tamil, unlike many others. It is an honour to have lyricist Vivek on board. After penning lyrics for actors Rajinikanth and Vijay, we are delighted to have him write for us.”

Priya Bhavani Shankar said, “It’s such a delight to find myself doing a different role and all credit goes to Karthick Naren. Arun Vijay sir is such an amazing and positive person. Prasanna sir has done a fabulous job in the film although we didn’t have scenes together. I was also quite excited on hearing that Jakes Bejoy is onboard.”

Director Karthick Naren, “I went through some tough times in my life and Mafia has helped me come out of it. At this point in time, I would like to thank a couple of people, who were earnestly responsible for it – Arun Vijay sir and Lyca Productions Subashkaran sir. Mafia will be a mainstream entertaining theatrical film and is definitely not anything out of the world. It will impress audiences, but there isn’t anything new in the plot. Don Ashok’s stunts, Gokul Benoy’s cinematography, and Jakes Bejoy’s music are going to be huge attractions in the film.”

Music director Jakes Bejoy, “When I met Karthick Naren for the first time during the narration of Dhuruvangal Pathinaaru, I was spellbound by the talent he possessed. With Mafia, he has upgraded himself. The re-recording process was very exciting at Budapest and Los Angeles, and I thank my team for their help.”

Stunt director Don Ashok, “There was a particular scene, where Arun Vijay was severely injured while performing an action sequence. It was hard for him to even wear shoes, but he did not give up and finished the sequence that moment itself. Priya Bhavani Shankar has taken a shot at action for the first time and has done a neat job.”

Logan can’t seem to hide his excitement at having to share acting credits with Pacino in the series. He said in a statement to the press, “I feel really lucky to be working with him. I was very nervous, but Al is a really disarming presence and a very humble and generous person. When I would talk about this project to my friends and family, I hesitated telling them about my co-star, I didn’t want to sound like I was bragging.”

“He is such an important figure in cinematic history,” he added, “He is such an icon and means so much not just to me, but to everyone who loves the movies. It was surreal to be working with him. But once you know him, he is such a great person and such a great collaborator, I feel lucky.”

Starring Al Pacino and Logan Lerman, Hunters starts streaming on Amazon Prime Video from 21 February.

‘Jagame Thandhiram’: Motion Poster Of Karthik Subbaraj’s Dhanush Starrer Out Now

Dhanush starrer D40 has now been titled Jagame Thandhiram. The first look and motion poster have just been unveiled by the makers.

A mix of vintage and local flavours, that’s what the motion poster showcases. You have a vinyl record player, imported liquor, some pizza, but there’s also billhooks and biryani. You have Kalaiyarasan, Joju George and James Cosmo in blazers and then you have Dhanush in a traditional veshti sattai strapped with a gun. In the end, they are all seated near a table (reminded me of the Last Supper) where an orange-suit-wearing Dhanush is seen smirking among a bunch of locals and foreigners. The trademark Santhosh Narayanan score works well in the poster. Does the title have anything to do with the popular number from K Balachander‘s 1979 classic Ninaithale Inikkum?

YNot Studios took to Twitter to launch the motion poster.

Helmed by director Karthik Subbaraj, the film is being jointly bankrolled by S Sashikanth and Chakravarthy Ramachandra for YNot Studios and by Reliance Entertainment. The film marks the first association of the actor with the director. Last week, on February 9, Karthik took to Twitter to announce that the shooting of the film has been wrapped up and thanked his crew for supporting him throughout. Dhanush had already completed shooting for his portions in the film by the end of December. The actor has said that it is one of the quickest films he has ever done.

It is being touted as a gangster film and has been filmed entirely in the United Kingdom. The film began shoot in August 2019. Earlier, speculations were rife that the film has been titled Suruli.

Action fame Aishwarya Lekshmi will be seen opposite the actor. Game of Thrones, Braveheart, Troy and The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe fame James Cosmo along with South-Indian actors Kalaiyarasan, Joju George, and Sanchana Natarajan also play important roles in the film.

Shreyaas Krishna is handling camera, Vinoth Rajkumar is helming art, and Vivek Harshan is editing the project. Dinesh Subbarayan had replaced Anbariv on stunts, M Sherif and Baba Baskar choreographed dance and Praveen Raja D worked on costumes.

Karthik Subburaj has been working on this script for a while but the project materialised only two years ago. Jagame Thandhiram will hit screens on 1 May 2020.

Dhanush had two releases last year — Asuran and Ennai Nokki Paayum Thotta. His first release in 2020 was Pattas which recently completed 25 days in theatres. The film will also release in Telugu as Local Boy on the 28 February. The actor recently won the Filmfare award for ‘Best Actor (Tamil)’ for his performance in Vada Chennai (2018) at the 66th Filmfare Awards South and the ‘Best Actor’ award for Asuran at the Ananda Vikatan Awards 2019 and at the Zee Cine Awards Tamil 2020.

Dhanush is currently filming for his next, titled Karnan with Pariyerum Perumal fame director Mari Selvaraj. The title of his next Bollywood venture with director Aanand L Rai, Atrangi Re was recently announced. The film is expected to go on the floors shortly. He will also be working on D43 with director Karthick Naren under Sathya Jyothi Films banner and in a film under Kalanithi Maran’s banner Sun Pictures. The director of the Sun project is yet to be revealed.

Meanwhile, Karthik Subbaraj has several films that he’s producing under his Stone Bench Films banner in various stages of production, including Keerthy Suresh starrer Penguin, an untitled film starring Aishwarya Rajesh and another untitled movie starring Vaibhav Reddy. He has also forayed into the production and distribution of independent films with his initiative Stone Bench Indie. Their first production Alli starring Joju George will hit screens soon.
