Exclusive: How Deepika Padukone Made It To The JNU Protest

Last evening Deepika Padukone visited JNU. The star seemed to have pulled off a coup, and her presence in solidarity with those protesting the violence against the students and staff of JNU, drew the nation’s attention.

So how did Deepika, who was in Delhi to promote Chhapaak end up in JNU? The first time anyone heard of her presence in the meeting called by the Jawaharlal Nehru University Teacher’s Association (JNUTA) and Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU), was when she was already standing there with the students and teachers. Even the media and the “paps” who know stars’ every move, especially around promo tours for films, were caught unawares.

A source in the JNUTA told Silverscreen that she wanted to come and offer support, and they facilitated it. The first step was bringing her into JNU without anyone noticing. She came to the university in a professor’s car; he drove. She sat in the back seat, squeezed between others so she could come in, without anyone (the security included), noticing. She came, met Aishe Ghosh who was injured, and others, and stood in solidarity and then left.

“All credit to her… She was willing. I only facilitated,” the source said.

Deepika’s presence is also relevant because she plays an acid attack survivor (based on activist Laxmi Agarwal’s real story) in Chhapaak. Several reporters have said that goons walked around the campus, on the evening of the attack in JNU terrorising women with acid.

On Times Now, an ABVP member confirmed that people were carrying acid:

Outraged by her presence with the students under attack, BJP’s Tajinder Bagga has called for a boycott of her films.

In an interview with Anjana Om Kashyap, Padukone drew parallels to what happened ahead of the release of her Padmaavat. (The karni sena went on a rampage ahead of the film, stalled its release and threatened to chop her nose off. The film was banned in four states Rajasthan, Gujarat, Haryana and Madhya Pradesh — all BJP ruled states then — before the Supreme Court stepped in and ordered the release of the film.)

Apart from calls for boycott right wing handles on Twitter also ran a disinformation campaign. They claimed that Laxmi Agarwal’s attacker in real life was Nadeem Khan, whereas in Chhapaak he was called Rajesh. Several people who have seen the film have tweeted that this is false. And that the religion of the attacker has not been changed.

Trailer Of Mysskin’s ‘Psycho’ Out Now; Will Send A Chill Down Your Spine

The trailer of Udhayanidhi StalinNithya Menen, and Aditi Rao Hydari starrer Psycho is out now. The Mysskin directorial is bankrolled by Arun Mozhi Manickam under his Double Meaning Productions banner.

The silent short trailer features a montage of disturbing and intriguing shots. We find Aditi Rao trapped somewhere, Udhayanidhi composing music, director Ram instructing a bunch of cops and an unidentified murderer at points. All of this backed by the tune of Für Elise, Ludwig van Beethoven’s most popular compositions. The trailer is rife with suspense which will definitely keep audiences guessing.

Actor Udhayanidhi Stalin took to Twitter to launch the trailer.

Psycho is touted to be a psychological thriller. The film is reportedly based on the tale of Angulimala (finger necklace) which is a central story in Buddhism. According to Buddhist literature, Angulimala was a coldblooded bandit who murdered people and made a necklace of their fingers until his meeting with the Buddha, at which point he followed the Buddha to a monastery and embraced monkhood. Udhayanidhi Stalin plays Gautham (which is Buddha’s name) who reportedly imparts knowledge to the serial killer.

“We at Double Meaning Productions are really excited to release the Psycho trailer today. It will be attached with Darbar which is releasing tomorrow and I can’t wait to see the audiences stay engrossed with the full-length feature film,” says producer Arun Mozhi Manickam.

Apart from the lead, actors Singampuli and Renuka Chouhan also play significant roles. On the technical front, PC Sreeram has handled camera Isaignani Ilayaraja has composed music and Anthony has taken up editing responsibilities.

Psycho will hit screens on January 24, 2020. Earlier the film was set to release on December 27, 2019, but was later postponed to this date for a Pan-India release.

“This is the first film that Double Meaning productions is releasing on this scale. The CBFC has really cooperated with our request and ensured that we retain the film’s title. We hope that the film finds acceptance across the country since the movie has a great premise and presentation. I know that as the producer of the film when I praise it people will think I am marketing the film. But, I genuinely believe that audiences will go on an exciting journey with this movie because of all the plot elements in the movie,” said Arun Mozhi.

I Used To Go Home And Lock Myself In For Hours: Rohit Pathak On Preparing For His Role In RGV’s Next

Rohit Pathak is the star of Ram Gopal Varma’s as-yet-untitled web series. In the web series, Pathak plays the main antagonist . He underwent rigorous training to look the part, in this crime thriller.  He was seen in pivotal roles in Tamil films Theeran Adhigaaram Ondru and Bakrid last.

Talking about locking himself up in a room to get into the skin of the character, the actor said, “It was very, very hard for me but I knew I had to prove myself as an actor. The preparation for this series was painful for me, emotionally. If I needed to get the praise of the audiences, I knew that I had prepare really hard to get into the skin of the character.”

It was tough to get into the right mindset for this role, according to Pathak, “It was not easy because I am not this evil person. I used to go home and lock myself in for hours and behaved like an antagonist trying to perfect a body language, posture and demeanour. No one should become this person. It has exhausted me completely. No one should have to go through this.”

Suriya Exudes Several Emotions In The Teaser Of ‘Soorarai Pottru’: Out Now

The teaser of Suriya starrer Soorarai Pottru is out now. Directed by Sudha Kongara of Irudhi Suttru fame, the film is being bankrolled by Suriya and Rajsekar Karpoorasundarapandian under their 2D Entertainment banner with Bollywood producer Guneet Monga and Aalif Surti co-producing it under their Sikhya Entertainment banner. Guneet is foraying into the Kollywood industry with the film.

Nedumaaran Rajangam (Suriya) is seen to struggle and face backlash, exhibiting a myriad of emotions, in his attempt to start-up an airline company with a meager amount of six-thousand rupees as the dialogue in the teaser goes. Although he’s found with a beard and military cut in most points of the teaser, we also find him scraggly haired and with a shaved stubble in some parts. GV Prakash‘s background score – ‘Maara Theme’ works just right, enhancing the mood of the teaser to a great extent.

Actor Mohanlal took to Twitter to release the teaser.

The film is reportedly a biopic on the life of Capt (Retd) GR Gopinath, who founded Air Deccan and introduced the concept of budget airlines in the country. It will star Sarvam Thaala Mayam fame Aparna Balamurali opposite Suriya. Apart from the lead, actors Mohan Babu, Paresh Rawal, Urvashi, Karunas, Vivek Prasanna, Krishna Kumar, and Kaali Venkat are also playing significant roles. Mohan Babu is making his Tamil film comeback after 40 years.

While GV Prakash is composing music, cinematography is by Niketh Bommireddy, production design by Jacki, editing by Satish Surya and costumes by Poornima Ramaswamy. Hollywood stunt choreographer Greg Powell, who has worked on films like SkyfallFast And Furious and Bourne Ultimatum, is choreographing the action sequences along with Vicky. Shobi and Sekhar VJ are choreographing the dance.

GV Prakash also tweeted recently that Thaikkudam Bridge, the popular band from Kerala, has collaborated and recreated one of its iconic numbers ‘Urumbu’ from the album Navarasam for the film.

On venturing into Tamil films, Monga said, “We are thrilled to start our journey in Tamil cinema with none other than Suriya for our film Soorarai Pottru. He is a national icon and one of the best actors in our country. This is truly a dream team here, with Suriya and Rajsekar Karpoorasundarapandian’s 2D Entertainment and Aalif Surti and Shriram Krishnan on my maiden venture in Tamil cinema”.

Soorarai Pottru will hit screens this summer.

Here is the teaser.

Trailer Out Now: Dhanush Is A Martial Arts Exponent In ‘Pattas’

The trailer of actor Dhanush’s upcoming film Pattas co-starring Nenjil Thunivirundhal fame Mehreen Pirzada is out now. Helmed by RS Durai Senthilkumar, the film is being bankrolled by Sendhil Thyagarajan and Arjun Thyayagarajan under their Sathya Jyothi Films banner. Dhanush is collaborating with the director for the second time after the 2016 drama-thriller Kodi.

We find a stern and focused Dhanush, the master of a form of martial art in a village and another nonchalant, wacky Dhanush, his son of course, in the city. As the trailer progresses, we find the former’s wife Sneha having an obvious yet substantial role of wanting to take revenge along with her son while Mehreen, been relegated to a small role. The trailer has been edited in the trademark style of Anthony L Ruben (he’s only done the trailer edit) with match cuts of both the younger and elder Dhanush. To be honest though, the predictable revenge plot hardly piques interest.

Sathya Jyothi Films took to Twitter to launch the trailer.

Dhanush and Sneha will be seen together again after 13 years. The last time was the cult classic Pudhupettai helmed by director Selvaraghavan.

A report in Times of India recently revealed that the title Pattas refers to the actor’s character’s name. It also added that the film will revolve around a form of martial art practiced by the Chozhas, way before kalari, along with commercial elements. Dhanush reportedly underwent training for the same.

Actor Naveen Chandra who received appreciation for his role in the recent Telugu crime-thriller Evaru and Vijay TV’s Kalakka Povadhu Yaaru fame Sathish have been roped in for important roles. Nasser and Munishkanth have also landed significant roles.

Cinematographer Om Prakash is handling the camera, Prakash Mabbu is on the edit, Vivek Shiva and Mervin J Solomon are composing music with G Durairaj helming art. Dhilip Subbarayan has choreographed the action sequences with Jaani choreographing dance.

It was earlier reported that the film might clash with director AR Murugadoss’Darbar starring actors Rajinikanth and Nayanthara in the lead roles but will now hit screens for Pongal 2020. The film is currently in post-production.

Recently, the film’s music album was launched at the Suryan FM radio station with six songs and one theme. The songs have been doing the rounds on social media.

Watch the trailer of Pattas here.

Trailer of ‘Shikara’ Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s Film On Kashmiri Pandits Does Them A Disservice With Poor Acting And Bad Writing

The trailer of Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s ShikaraThe Untold Story Of Kashmiri Pandits is here. Set in the 90s, the story follows a young couple that leaves Kashmir as part of an exodus and ends up in a refugee camp, where once well-to-do people are seen chasing a truck for tomatoes, rations. The militancy, the hit lists on trees, and homes burning… all form the backdrop as the couple endures exile. The film has been co-written by journalist Rahul Pandita (author of Our Moon Has Blood Clots) and Abhijat Joshi, along with the director. Music is by AR Rahman and Qutub-e-Kripa. Chopra previously made Mission Kashmir, starring Hrithik Roshan and Preity Zinta, two decades ago in 2000.

The lead actors, both debutants, (Sadia plays Shanti Dhar and Aadil Khan, Shiv Kumar Dhar) perform rather poorly and the emotions of leaving behind a home and a way of life, never hit you, mainly also because of the way the trailer is cut. The supporting cast’s acting is also nothing to write home about. Everything is literal. In one scene, men stand around a tree that has names of Kashmiri Pandits. It is a hitlist. One of them reads it, like a student in a school play, “Likha hai ek mahiney me yahaan se nikal jayiye varna goli marenge” (leave in a month or we’ll shoot you). The scene, if done with nuance, could have been chilling, instead the horror never hits you. It is just exposition after exposition. News anchors reading out things. Benazir Bhutto’s speech. The lead actors’ declarations. The visuals do little justice too, which is a pity. Shikara’s being touted as the first film that tells the untold story of the Pandits but it does the very cause it seeks to support a disservice by doing a shoddy job of telling this story.

The timing of the trailer is also a bit problematic, one wonders how neither Fox nor Vidhu Vinod Chopra considered this. Kashmir has been on a shutdown ever since the abrogation of Article 370 on August 5.

The film releases on February 7, 2020.

Writer K Aravind Kumar’s Book Dhaesamma Is A Collection Of Shorts About Coastal People

Writer K Aravind Kumar’s book, Dhaesamma – A Record of Coastal People, a collection of short stories in Tamil was released by MP Thol Thirumavalavan on Saturday 4 January 2020.

Other dignitaries present at the book’s launch were Nakkeeran Gopal (Editor, Nakkeeran), Writer Joe D Cruz (Sahitya Akademi Award winner), Writer R Murugavel , Writer N Sriram , Writer Shaji. The event was held at NAAM Charitable Trust in T Nagar.

The chief guest MP Thol Thirumavalavan was all praise for the writer who wrote the stories of the common man in the native language. The book is about ordinary coastal people, who live in North Chennai. The book itself is written in the local dialect, and is one of the few books to stick to the local language.

Nakkeeran Gopal, who released the first edition of the book also congratulated the author on the release of the book. The book is being published by Kalachuvadu Publishers. Writer Joe D’ Cruz said that little was known about the lives of the fishermen and congratulated the author Aravind Kumar for writing about them.

Other writers also praised the short story collection Desamma as a book that broke the mould of traditional literary works and emerged as a trendsetter.

STR’s Role In Hansika Starrer ‘Maha’ Is More Than A Cameo: Director Jameel

STR is back on screen in a new avatar as a pilot in Hamsika Motwani’s reportedly female-centric film Maha. The film’s director Jameel, spoke about the ‘cameo’ to the media. He said, “There has been a lot of buzz around this particular character, and that it will be a short cameo. That is not true, STR has a screen time of nearly one hour in the film, and he will be in the flashback portions.”

He also added, “The role is based on real-life incidents that happened in Goa nearly 30 years ago. We have added some fictional elements, and I think his portions in the film will be gripping and entertaining.”

The director also wanted to clarify that STR’s character being named Jameel was not a publicity stunt for himself. He joked, “Please don’t think that I wanted to publicise my name. We were thinking of Shoaib, but the team felt that it was a common name, so we chose Jameel.”

The director was also all praise for the actor, saying, “He is a perfectionist. Despite being a star who has been in the industry for long, he never hesitated to ask if a shot was okay, he was open to retakes. He was a thorough professional on set. His presence will definitely add immense value to our film.”

Raj-Remya Nambeesan Starrer ‘Rio’ Shoot Wrapped Up

Badri Venkatesh’s film Rio, starring Raj and Remya Nambeesan has finished shoot. The news of the shoot’s completion comes straight from the desk of director Badri Venkatesh. He said, “The process of shooting this film has been great. We were in great sync, as a team, and were able to complete the film on time. We shot in some stunning locations apart from Chennai, and it was quite an experience.”

The film was shot in multiple locations in Vagamon, Idukki, Gangtok, and Kupup located near the Chinese border. The film is now in post-production and the makers plan to release the first look and the title poster soon.

The film also features an ensemble comedy cast including MS Bhaskar, Santhana Bharathi, Bala Saravanan, Rekha, Marimuthu, Viji Chandrashekar, Robo Shankar, Munishkant, Aadukalam Narain, ‘Pazhaya Joke’ Thangadurai, Madurai Sujatha and others.

Produced by Rajesh Kumar and L Sinthan for Positive Print Studios, the film has musical score by Yuvan Shankar Raja and cinematography handled by B Rajasekar. The others in the technical crew are – Sam RDX (Editing), Saravanan (Art), Kalyan (Choreography), Stunner Sam (Action), AC Karunamoorthy (Story) and RK (Dialogues).

Wonderful Songs, Weird Videos: What We Are Listening To On AR Rahman’s Birthday

We’ve all known the singer-music director AR Rahman for his wonderful melodies, groundbreaking tunes, and fun numbers. Though his music works most of the time, the visuals which are equally important, tend to go a bit off. Here’s a look at six such songs as the Oscar-award winner turns 53.

Hello Doctor – Kadhal Desam, 1996

When it came out, this song’s video did a real number of everyone. Looking back, you think a song about love? This? Erm. Also, hello floating men. It features in the film Kadhal Desam directed by Kathir and stars Abbas, Vineeth, Vadivelu, and Tabu.

Soniya Soniya – Ratchagan, 1997

Say hi to unnecessary expenditure to the producer: set work with huge guns, shades, and cigarettes. They managed to get Nagarjuna play the fool in front of chroma-key backdrop. It appears in the film Ratchagan directed by Praveen Gandhi. It also stars Raghuvaran, SP Balasubrahmanyam, and Vadivelu.

Ennaku Oru Girlfriend – Boys, 2003

The very definition of perverse, this song. Also was our censor board progressive back then? How did the video get past their infamous scissors? We’ll never know! It features in the film Boys directed by Shankar. It stars Siddharth, Genelia, Bharath, Thaman and Vivek.

Theekuruvi – Kangalal Kaidhu Sei, 2004

We have a video gone rogue here. Both Vaseegaran and Priyamani have absolutely no idea or control over what they are doing. They seem to follow instructions on cue like robots? Also what’s happening here? It features in the film Kangalal Kaidhu Sei directed by Bharathiraja. It also stars Mayilsamy, Ilavarasu, Chithra Lakshmanan.

Maramkothiye – Anbe Aaruyire, 2005

The dance master wanted to see how drill moves work, right? The CG department looked at an opportunity to experiment. The editor believed stretched out frames would look cool. And they ended up churning out well this song. It features in the film Anbe Aaruyire directed by SJ Surya. It stars SJ Surya, Meera Chopra, Urvashi, Santhana Bharathi, and Santhanam.

Mona Gasolina – Lingaa, 2014

An amalgamation of three tiresome scenarios: Superstar Rajinikanth and Anushka Shetty are on a ship, then inside a sheriff’s office and suddenly in a high-tech base lifting a diamond? It features in the film Lingaa directed by KS Ravikumar. It also stars Sonakshi Sinha, Jagapathi Babu, and Santhanam.

Big Stars Of Bollywood Did Not Attend Government’s Pro CAA Reach-out

BJP’s Bollywood reach-out for clearing the air on the misconceptions surrounding CAA, the Citizenship Amendment Act, was less than successful. None of the bigger stars of Bollywood were in attendance at the event hosted by Piyush Goyal and Baijayant Panda in Mumbai’s Grand Hyatt hotel. This is in stark contrast with the Gandhi 150 event that saw the likes of Aamir Khan, Shah Rukh Khan taking selfies with Modi.

According to NDTV, “Among those who showed up at the meeting were filmmakers Ritesh Sidhwani, Bhushan Kumar, Kunal Kohli, Ramesh Taurani, Rahul Rawail, Censor Board chief Prasoon Joshi, singers Shaan and Kailash Kher, composer Anu Malik, and actors Ranvir Shorey and Urvashi Rautela. Mainstream Bollywood chose to stay away.”

Earlier Huffington Post reported that Karan Johar, Farhan Akhtar, Kabir Khan, Siddharth Roy Kapur, Ritesh Sidhwani, besides several others were invited. As was Richa Chadda who was seen in protests against the CAA. The website also reported that “the meeting, organised by film producer Mahavir Jain, is part of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)’s attempt to blunt the widespread opposition to the act — both in India and abroad. Jain, widely seen as Modi’s man in Bollywood, was also behind Modi’s infamous “Bollywood Selfie”. The selfie was orchestrated just before the general elections last year, and was aggressively publicised by the BJP.”

Ranbir Shorey told The Indian Express, “We were mostly clearing the air around CAA. The fact how it’s not about taking the citizenship away but granting it to refugees from neighbouring Islamic countries. The government feels there is a lot of misinterpretation regarding the CAA, because of which there are protests still going on… CAA is something which I already support and stand behind. But it was pointed out to me that there could be some problems with CAA and NRC as a combination. That it could be troublesome for some Indians, especially minorities. I did bring that up and was given assurances. I was also told the Home Minister and Prime Minister themselves have given assurances that the NRC or any exercise will legally be conducted in a way where no Indian citizen will be affected.”

Writer Tamil Prabha Has Penned The Screenplay, Dialogues For Pa Ranjith’s Next Along With The Director

Chennai-based writer Tamil Prabha has penned the screenplay and dialogue for Pa Ranjith‘s next film along with the director.

Tamil Prabha authored a searing Tamil novel Petta (Kalachuvadu, 2018) on the lives of people in Chennai’s Chintadripet, those traditionally living around the Cooum, their lives, livelihoods, beliefs, food, and language. Tamil Prabha’s debut novel surprised everyone by how well it did and has had more than one reprint since its first publication.

The shoot for the film will commence shortly. After Kaala Ranjith has been working on his Bollywood debut with his Birsa Munda biopic. His Neelam productions’ Irandam Ulagaporin Kadaisi Gundu released in 2019. Yesterday we learned that his Neelam Publications a new publishing initiative will bring out four new books in 2020, on various subjects including the cinema of the 80s, Enbadhugalin Tamil Cinema by Stalin Rajangam.
