I’m ‘Producer-Friendly’ And Straightforward, Says GV Prakash At 100% Kadhal Press Meet

Actor GV Prakash Kumar, last seen in director Sasi’s Sivappu Manjal Pachai, is all set for the release of his next, 100% Kadhal. The actor, who has a bunch of films on hand, flew down from the US after completing his portion of Ricky Burchell’s Trap City, starring Brandon T Jackson, for the press meet organised in connection with the release of the much-delayed 100% Kadhal.

100% Kadhal is a family entertainer, and isn’t just meant for the youth. It’s bound to bring back memories of what you shared during college. I play the role of Balu, a nerd, while my co-star Shalini Pandey plays Mahalakshmi. It is a remake of the Telugu hit 100% Love, starring Naga Chaitanya and Tamannaah Bhatia, but there are some variations, especially when it comes to humour. Since he was part of the original too, director Chandramouli sir has done justice to the remake.”

Beginning from Naachiyaar and until his latest release Sivappu Manjal Pachai, Prakash has been taking up roles that require him to move away from his comfort zone. Will he get back to playing a suave character? Prakash says that he is being approached to play only roles that require him to be unlike his real self. “I love simplicity. Essaying a character who the audience can connect to has always been my goal. But, somehow, directors feel I suit the “pullaingo” kind of character and narrate such scripts to me. But, even though the base is the same, I do bring in variations.” He goes on to add: “Balu from 100% Kadhal, and my role in Ayngaran will not be stereotypical.”

The actor, who first made a name as a composer, has projects to keep him busy in both his areas of talent. “People always ask me how I find time. It’s not about finding the time, it’s about making it. I make time for everything, and I don’t postpone work. So, it isn’t as hard as it seems. Also, I’m ‘producer-friendly’ and straightforward. I chalk out schedules suitable for the producer and am frank with them. And, maybe, the boy-next-door look I sport is helpful in getting me films. ”

In Ravi Arasu’s Ayngaran, scheduled to release by the end of November, he plays a young scientist. In the Hollywood musical Trap City, he plays a surgeon. Prakash also teams up with Vasanthabalan, the director who gave him a break as composer with Veyil, for  Jail. The Telugu version of Sivappu Manjal Pachai is to release during Deepavali, and he has also signed up to act in the remake of a Malayalam film.

As composer, Prakash has signed Sudha Kongara’s Soorarai Pottru, which has five songs, Vetrimaran’s Asuran, Vasanthabalan’s Jail and AL Vijay’s multilingual Thalaivi. Is he being very choosy as a composer? “I do music for directors who respect me. I prefer quality over quantity,” he says.

The press meet saw actor-director RV Udhayakumar, Rekha, editor MU Kasi Vishwanathan, and co-producer Raj Patel share the stage with Prakash and director Chandramouli. The trailer and songs were also screened.

100% Kadhal stars Nasser, Thambi Ramaiah, Appukutty, Rekha, RV Udhayakumar, Jayachitra and Thalaivasal Vijay. Directed by  Chandramouli, under the banner of Sukumar’s Creative Cinemas NY and NJ Entertainment, the movie is slated for release on October 4.

‘Moosa In The Family Man Is Unlike Any Character I Have Played Before’: Actor Neeraj Madhav

Neeraj Madhav, the breakout star of Prime Video’s series The Family Man, is a popular face in Kerala. The 29-year-old dancer-actor, who made his screen debut in 2003, has worked in over 23 mainstream Malayalam films, and tried his hand at choreography and screenwriting. In The Family Man, directed by Raj and DK, he plays Moosa Rahman, one of the central characters, and the most complex character Neeraj has ever portrayed on screen.

A chemical engineer from IIT, Moosa travels to Syria to join the ISIS, and, on return, lands in the hands of a team of Indian intelligence officers, led by Srikant Tiwari, played by Manoj Bajpayee. In the series spanning over 10 episodes, Neeraj delineates Moosa’s nearly impenetrable personality and deceptive body language.

Neeraj is the first Malayali actor to make a foray into the OTT space. “The audience in Kerala is yet to warm up to digital platforms. Barring a few short series on YouTube, there is absolutely no Malayalam original content on streaming websites. Most of the responses I’m getting on my performance are from strangers from different parts of the country. This has never happened to me before,”he beams.

“Web shows have a distinct appeal,” says Neeraj, who has always been an avid follower of OTT platforms. “I am a fan of long-format shows such as Mindhunter and The Expanse. You easily get hooked to them, especially since they let can be watched anywhere and anytime, on your phone screen or laptops.”

The audition call came a year ago, from a casting agency in Mumbai.  “I was told that it was for an upcoming web series. At that time, web series were still in the nascent stage in India. I sought a briefing on my character, and, to my surprise, DK, one of the show creators, gave me a call. He said they had already done basic research on my work, and asked if I could do an audition in Hindi.”

Raj and DK were particular that a South Indian actor should play Moosa Rahman, who is from Kerala’s Kasaragod district. “They have made a genuine effort to have a pan-Indian cast. One of the characters who is Tamil is played by Priyamani, and a Kashmiri militant is played by an actor from Kashmir.”

There were some initial jitters and apprehensions, but Neeraj, finally, went into the project with an open mind. “The film explores the emotional side of a terrorist, who is usually depicted in media and elsewhere as a uni-dimensional killing machine. Raj and DK wanted to go through Moosa’s past and his thought process. Since he isn’t a ‘usual’ character, I didn’t have any reference. I decided to trust my instinct, and focus on the emotional side of the scenes.”

The production of The Family Man was a long and gruelling process that went on for over eight months, in various locations in and outside the country. During this period, Neeraj took a break from the Malayalam film industry. He was finalised for a role in Nitesh Tiwari’s recently-released Chhichhore, which he had to let go of. He has no regrets, for the new medium has opened up to him a whole different and exciting world. “A web series offers an actor a great opportunity to be the character for a longer period of time. You can delve into every minute detail. You get more screen-space than what you get in a feature film…” he says.

The shooting was largely script-bound. “The makers had a brilliant vision on how the show should unfurl. Everything you needed to know was in there.” His brilliant co-actor Manoj Bajpayee is fond of improvising. “In our first scene together, where he talks about his mother to convince Moosa to surrender, Manoj sir added a lot of details to what was there on the script. I had to play along. Sometimes, in the retake, he would do a completely new thing and surprise everyone. It is challenging to match up to what he does, but that exercise enriches your performance,” says Neeraj.

Improvising dialogues in Hindi was, initially, a matter of concern, the actor admits. “I am not someone who mugs up dialogues. When I work in Malayalam films, I usually improvise. Being a non-Hindi actor, I was at a disadvantage, especially since everything was shot in sync sound.” But gradually, he smoothed it out.

One of the highpoints of the series is an edgy one-take sequence shot inside a hospital where a series of killings take place. The camera relentlessly tracks the characters as a hell breaks loose. “The chase scene in the first episode too had some interesting long single-takes. There was an action choreographer, but the actors had to improvise and follow their instincts in these scenes. I appear only in the tail end of the hospital scene, so, for the first two days of the shoot, I had nothing to do but wait behind that door for the camera to reach my part (Laughs).”

After completing The Family Man early this year, Neeraj worked in two Malayalam films – Gauthamante Radham, in which he and a car are the central characters, and Ka, a thriller. “I started out as a supporting actor. My journey has been focussed on improving as an actor and being part of films that give me more space to perform. I moved from comic roles to grey-shaded characters in films such as Oru Mexican Apaaratha, and to playing the lead role in a romantic drama, Paipin Chuvattile Pranayam. My role in The Family Man is unlike any character I have played before. I consider this transition as an accomplishment.”

Neeraj entered the film industry as an aspiring writer-director. In 2017, he wrote Lavakusha, a Malayalam comedy, and starred as one of the protagonists alongside his friend and colleague Aju Varghese. “I always wanted to write. Lavakusha was an experiment in mainstream entertainer space. I will continue to write,” he says.

‘KD Isn’t Just An Award Film, It Is An Entertaining Film’: Director Madhumita On ‘KD Engira Karuppudurai’

KD Engira Karuppudurai, a Tamil film directed by Madhumita Sundararaman under Saregama’s production wing Yoodlee Films, has bagged the Jury Award at the 3rd Singapore South Asian International Film Festival. Held between 30 August and 7 September 2019, the jury consisted of several prominent filmmakers from around the world, including India’s Rajiv Menon and Suhasini Maniratnam.

Madhumita Sundararaman, who is known for films like Vallamai Tharayo (which won Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Family Film), Kola Kolaya Mundhirika and Moone Moonu Varthai, has reportedly taken on a lively yet emotional storyline for this film. It is about a bed-ridden old man who wakes up from coma and escapes when he comes to know that his family is planning to euthanise him. He befriends a cheerful eight-year-old and embarks on a journey with him, fulfilling all the dreams on his bucket list. While the boy is an orphan yearning for love, the old man seeks solitude from a disloyal family.

KD Engira Karuppudurai stars Mu. Ramasamy ayya and debut actor Nagavishal in the lead, along with Yog Japee, Badava Gopi, Gabrella Sellus and Guna in significant roles. Meyyendiran Kempuraj has handled the camera, Karthikeya Murthy has composed music with Vijay Venkataramanan on the edit.

KD has been a fantastic journey for all of us so far. As someone who was born in India but raised abroad, I have always been perceived as an urban filmmaker, and unconsciously chosen to tell urban stories. However, KD is different. KD is set in Virudhunagar and Thenkasi and is a rural coming-of-age story between an 80-year-old man and an 8-year-old boy. At the festival, I had the opportunity to see many good films, including Oththa Seruppu, Veyilmarangal, Widow of Silence, etc, but to realize that KD won amongst such wonderful films, makes the win even sweeter. Usually, when a film wins at festivals, the audience immediately brand it as an award film/art film, so I want to make it very clear, that KD isn’t just an award film. It is an entertaining film, which will leave you with a lot of laughter, a bit of tears and an overall smile when you go home,” Madhumitha said in a statement.

Madhumitha won the ‘Best Director’ award at the UK Asian Film Festival, London, and at the Indian Film Festival of Cincinnati while debut actor Nagavishal won the ‘Best Unorthodox Roleplay’ Award at the Caleidoscope Indian Film Festival, Boston. The film was nominated for ‘Best Actor’ and ‘Best Child Actor’ at the New York Indian Film Festival and ‘Best Actor’ and ‘Best Film’ at the Singapore South Asian International Film Festival.

The film was also officially selected for The Tasveer South Asian Film Festival, Asian American International Film Festival, The Ottawa Indian Film Festival Awards and the 10th Jagran Film Festival where it was a nominee in multiple categories.

Madhumitha also said: “I did my under graduation in Singapore, and not many people know this, but I had an accident during my college, and one of my professors challenged me and said that I could not complete the year. I completed the year with excellence and came back years later to win this award. I invited him to the screening and he had tears in his eyes, and told me how much he loved the film. I realised that his challenge was meant to push me to do better.”

The movie has been doing the rounds of the film festival circuit and is slated to release in theatres this November. Madhumitha’s short film Abstract Identity won the BBC Award in the ‘Best in the World’ category. She did a course in direction at the New York Film Academy and briefly worked on Pirates of the Caribbean 3.

Dream Warrior Pictures Slams Groups Targeting Karthi-Starrer Sultan In A Strongly Worded Statement

Shooting of Karthi’s upcoming film with Dream Warrior Pictures’ Sultan was stalled in Malakottai in Dindugal when members of Hindu Munnani, Hindu Makkal Katchi, and Shiv Sena created a stir. They not only assumed that the film was about Tipu Sultan and so it shouldn’t be shot in a Hindu temple, but also landed up outside the shooting location, causing a commotion. The issue was resolved only when the police showed up.

Today, Dream Warriors has released a statement in which it clarified that the movie was not about Tipu Sultan. It also asked, while there is a CBFC already in place, who gave these protestors the right to clampdown on the makers’ freedom of expression, that was safeguarded by the constitution?

“We were shooting for the last few days at Malaikottai after taking prior permission. September 24 was actually the final day of the shoot and our cast and crew were almost wrapping up the shoot when, all of a sudden, the people who are supposed to be from Hindu Munnani started protesting. It was not clear about what they were creating such a commotion,” SR Prabhu of Dream Warriors told Deccan Chronicle.

Sultan is being directed by Bakkiyaraj Kannan (Remo). The film is currently being shot across Chennai, Dindigul and surrounding regions. “Of late, for their own publicity, individuals and some organisations have begun to attack movies. We have the censors to decide what a film must show and not show. Apart from this, it is entirely up to the filmmaker to choose what he wants to showcase. This is a right that our country gives us. We strongly condemn any organisation or individual attacking the freedom of creative artistes. Further, we very strongly condemn the act of painting historical figures with religious and casteist colours,  insulting both their lives and our history,” the statement from Dream Warriors said.

A press statement from the team earlier said that the film is a comedy, action entertainer. Grand set work for the film was erected in Chennai in March. Details about the story have been kept under wraps. The film also stars Yogi Babu and Mansoor Ali Khan in important roles. It has music by Vivek-Mervin, the composer duo who are also working on Pattas and Sanga Thamizhan.

Actor Karthi, meanwhile, has Kaithi directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, which will see a Diwali release in October.

Jaggi And The Stars: How The Isha Foundation Got So Many Stars To Support Its Cauvery Calling Campaign

Isha Foundation’s ‘Cauvery Calling’ is an extension of its ‘Rally For Rivers’ from some years ago. Then too, actors held placards. Then too Jaggi Vasudev went on a rally. Then too, they collected funds. They were even included in the Maharashtra State Government’s Waghari River Rejuvenation Programme (Rs 415 crores were set aside for this purpose) despite opposition from environmentalists that Jaggi’s ideas for India’s rivers are too simplistic. Isha claims that Cauvery Calling “will support lakhs of farmers in the Cauvery basin to plant 242 crore trees in an economic plan that is expected to revive not just the river but the fortunes of farmers in the basin as well.”

One private organisation making unilateral decisions on behalf of people who live around the Cauvery basin, and then collecting funds from the public for the same has raised a lot of eyebrows and some pressing legal questions. Especially, considering the fact that the outcome of the previous edition of Rally For Rivers is, at best, opaque.

Several stars have participated in Isha’s Cauvery Calling campaign — Juhi Chawla, Vidya Balan, Nithya Menen, Raveena Tandon, Shah Rukh Khan, Rakshit Shetty, Kajal Aggarwal, Kangana Ranaut and Tamannaah Bhatia, among others. Even Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman’s parents have extended support.

In fact, Kangana, Tamannaah and Kajal (the latter two are acting in remakes of Queen that originally starred Kangana in Hindi. They will be seen in the Tamil and Telugu versions) have even done a ‘Three Queens Support’ video, promoting at once the films and the campaign. All the star requests are the same, asking people to donate money, 42 rupees at that, per tree, so Isha can plant trees around the Cauvery. Some have even told their followers that they have pledged to donate a lakh trees, and so, can their followers please help?

How did the foundation pull off such a huge campaign, making so many bigwigs work for it? By finding an influencer. Several film PROs who Silverscreen spoke to, off the record, said that the Isha Foundation got in touch with them and asked them to round up some celebrities for the job. One PRO who has handled some of the biggest names in the South said, “I was not very impressed with what they said they were going to do, and so, I backed out. Despite that fact that no PROs from the industry is working with them, they have managed to get publicity and rope in celebrities. They’ve done this by finding an influencer who is a part of the industry.”

Speaking to Silverscreen, a famous Chennai-based actor, said, “I was asked but did not take part in the campaign, because I am still unsure what they did with the Rally for Rivers. I am wary about the entire programme of planting trees along the course of the Cauvery. I am a little suspect about the reputation of the person leading the campaign, the work he has done at his ashram, and the ecological damage there. So, I stayed away.” Another actor chipped in, “I was told to shoot a video supporting the cause, but was not very comfortable doing that. It gets very embarrassing when someone you respect in the industry asks you to do something, but you can’t because your heart is not in it.”

The bulk of the support from the North is being spearheaded by Kangana and her sister and manager Rangoli Chandel, who has been incessantly tweeting about the campaign and retweeting tweets about donations. In fact, Jaggi is in Kashi, and the latest photos show him with Kangana and Juhi at a temple, and later with Kangana, where she is purportedly asking him questions. Not one of them has asked a single question about what happened to Rally For Rivers.

Even earlier, Isha has put out videos in which really big stars ‘interview’ Jaggi Vasudev. Several of them, including a big Telugu actor, sources told us, were approached by people who personally knew the celebs and were followers of Isha Foundation. The common acquaintances took the idea forward to actors on behalf of Isha, offering it as a win-win situation for both parties. There were no conclusive details on whether any money was involved, and so Silverscreen is not speculating on the monetary aspect of this mammoth public relations project.

On Saturday, Leonardo DiCaprio (who also lent his voice to the Chennai water issue during the drought some months ago) posted in support of Cauvery Calling on Facebook. DiCaprio said, “India’s rivers are severely endangered with many of its smaller rivers vanishing. Join Sadhguru and the Isha Foundation in their fight to preserve the Cauvery River.”

In response, The Coalition for Environmental Justice in India has written to DiCaprio asking him to withdraw his support. The statement read, “The ‘Cauvery Calling’ campaign is not a programme that comprehends the river basin’s realities, and her future well being.  It appears to be a programme that presents, rather simplistically, that the river can be saved by planting trees on banks of her streams, rivulets, tributaries and the floodplains of the river. Planting trees is welcome, but only when it is done where needed, and by choosing appropriate species. It is a process that is best done consultatively, based on local needs, and sensitive to local ecological dynamics… The tree planting promoted by Isha Foundation, by inviting people to donate money to plant 2,420,000,000 trees, may appear incredibly attractive. But, on deeper investigation, it comes across as a method that promotes a monoculturist paradigm of landscape restoration, which people of India have rejected long ago. Besides, such a programme could create unintended and unforeseen social and ecological consequences, as planting trees in certain regions (grasslands and floodplains for instance) could result in the drying up of streams and rivulets, and destruction of wildlife habitats. Further, it can also lead to encroachments of the floodplains and riverbeds, as has happened at numerous places.”

The statement also said that “Isha Foundation has very low credibility in conforming with Indian laws protecting human rights and environment. No less an authority than the Comptroller and Auditor General of India, a constitutional body, has reported that the foundation has built its headquarters into an elephant corridor and on land belonging to Adivasis (original inhabitants of India, who are indigenous communities).”

It also highlighted that the ‘Waterman of India’ Rajendra Singh has remarked that Jaggi Vasudev’s ‘Cauvery Calling’ is a campaign “just to earn name and money”.

Whether any of the celebrities and public personalities that have endorsed this campaign understand the complexities of environmental issues in the country is anyone’s guess. Perhaps, everyone was swayed by the promise that ‘This is not a protest. This is not an agitation.

Saand Ki Aankh Trailer Leads To War Of Words Online; Neena Gupta, Taapsee Pannu Weigh In

The trailer of Taapsee Pannu, Bhumi Pednekar-starrer Saand Ki Aankh dropped recently, and has garnered more than 14 million views. The film, produced by Anurag Kashyap and Nidhi Parmar under the banner of Reliance Entertainment, will be helmed by writer Tushar Hiranandani; it marks his directorial debut. He wrote the story for the well-known Masti franchise and has also worked on the screenplay and story of the ABCD franchise, among other movies. The film recreates the incredibly inspiring stories of Prakashi Tomar and Chandro Tomar, two of the oldest sharpshooters in the world.

The trailer begins with Prakash Jha holding a rifle in hand, addressing how guns are no child’s play. He goes on to say that men who adorn them look the best. Following this, several shots of women doing household chores and working on the fields are shown. We then get to see Bhumi and Taapsee firing guns and striking the bull’s eye, witnessed by a bemused Vineet Kumar, who later becomes their coach. The two, along with their granddaughters undergo training secretly, without paying heed to the people around. Their dreams are stamped upon, along with their medals, and, in one scene, when the coach asks them what they eat to gain such marksmanship, Taapsee replies: “Insults”.

The trailer was launched at a popular mall in Malad, Mumbai. It was released on Twitter by the team soon after.

Shaad Randhawa also plays a significant role in the film. Sudhakar Reddy Yakkanti cranks the camera, Vishal Mishra composes the music and Devendra Murdeshwar is in charge of editing.

Ever since the trailer dropped, the team has been receiving a lot of appreciation from fans and the film fraternity. Likewise, it has also been receiving an equal share of opposition for casting actors who don’t belong to the age group of the film’s characters. It began with an individual Nikhil, and then went viral when Badhaai Ho star Neena Gupta replied to it. Later, Rangoli Chandel, Kangana Ranaut’s manager and sister who has always had a thing to say about Taapsee, got involved.

Taapsee Pannu released a statement in response to the arguments on social media.

In June, just before the release of Kangana’s Judgmental Hai Kya, Rangoli called Taapsee a ‘sasti copy’ who tried to imitate Kangana in all her choices. Anurag Kashyap, who directed Taapsee in Manmarziyan, came to her defence too, but Taapsee chose to step away from the argument after a point. Despite Taaspee’s statement, Rangoli has now prolonged the argument further.

Saand Ki Aankh was recently nominated for the ‘People’s Choice Award’ at the Pingyao Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon International Film Festival (PYIFF) held at China. It is slated for release on 25 October 2019.

My Role In Market Raja MBBS Will Remind People Of My Father: Radhika Sarathkumar

The audio launch of Market Raja MBBS starring former Bigg Boss winner Arav and Kavya Thapar in lead roles was held yesterday in Chennai. Industry vet Radhika Sarathkumar was felicitated with the title ‘Nadigavel Selvi’ ‘for her outstanding journey as an actress in the world of both silver screen and small screen’. Interestingly, Radhika’s father veteran actor MR Radha was given the title ‘Nadigavel’ in the year 1952 during the staging of the play ‘Por Val’. Excerpts from what the cast and crew said at the event:

Radhika:
More than getting honoured, I am emotionally delighted for my father’s title is also here. It’s only because of his blessings, I have come this distance. Today’s main focus is Arav and music director Simon K King. I have always been in awe of Saran sir for being so creative in his writing and narration. I think the reason behind this big honour is because of my role in this film that might remind people my father in a few places.”

Producer S Mohan: “Director Saran has done a remarkable job with his screenwriting and direction. Simon K King has given us his best music at lesser remuneration and I request producers to introduce and make use of such good talents. I am sure Arav will become a mass commercial hero with this film and it doesn’t look like his debut movie. I have almost completed shooting another film with him Raja Bheema and he has done a tremendous job in both the movies.” Actor Sarathkumar said, “I am really honoured to see that Radhika has been a part of this industry for more than 40 years. In reality, she is the Lady Superstar as she’s given huge hope to many actresses that their span as heroine isn’t limited to five years, but beyond that. I have always felt that she deserves more honours including Padmashree.”
Nassar: “I am happy that Radhika has received great honours. I have always admired her for being a strong woman. Director Hari added, “I got the feel of watching the trailer of Amarkalam here and am sure Market Raja is going to be a huge success. Music Director Simon has done a fabulous job.”
Producer G Dhananjayan: “I am sure Radhika madam will definitely get Padmashree sooner and we as an industry will surely get such the honours next year.”
Rohini: “We as artistes always desire for some challenging roles and I am really happy that we get it in Saran sir’s movies. Working with the entire team has been blissful. I was laughing thoroughly throughout the narration and am sure that everyone in theatres will be totally engrossed with this engaging entertainer.”
Devadarshini: “For the artistes like us who came to industry by 90s, it’s been a dream come true to work with Saran sir. Arav is handsome and really talented and Radhika mam is such an inspiring female artiste.”
Actor Arav: “I want to thank Mohan sir for treating me like a son and giving me the opportunity to work in two films with him. Being such a great filmmaker, director Saran left me fascinated with his down to earth personality. There was no need for an established filmmaker like him to narrate the script to a newcomer like me. I used to feel a longing that Radhika ma’m should play my mother like she did for Vijay in Theri. But to see that she has donned a mother role like this in Market Raja is awesome.”
Director Saran: “While my life as director was going into dusk, Surabhi Mohan sir became my dawn. I would like to make a statement that I am back. Rohini madam has done a remarkable job in this film. Almost everyone in the star-cast has made a great contribution towards the film and Radhika madam is just awesome.”
