On the surface, there’s nothing very dissimilar about their offerings; Sivakarthikeyan and Santhanam, who have had a few solo movies to their credit, aspire yet again to the one ideal that tells the world that you have arrived in cinema: Turning a hero. And, in a much rehashed Tamil dream of sorts – one that is sure to win hearts – Arivu romances a woman from a social setting more sophisticated than his own; obviously Nayanthara as Mrinalini doesn’t mind that Arivu isn’t quite inclined towards questioning gender inequality as she is.
I met Rima Das at the recently concluded Dharamshala International Film Festival, in the beautifully lit up basketball court of the Tibetan Children’s Village School where delegates, volunteers, organisers and the local audience hang out every evening. Fluttering a pair of invisible wings like a butterfly, she was floating around the space, chatting uninhibitedly, and gleefully posing for selfies. “What a rockstar!
Sample this — a recent report by The Hollywood Reporter said that Sony stopped reviews from being published for a while and almost blamed Rotten Tomatoes and its influence on audience to salvage the film’s poor rating. The film now has an approval rating of 99 per cent based on 280 reviews, with an average rating of 8. 3/10 on Rotten Tomatoes.
The 3D animated film – The Emoji Movie – released on July 28, received a zero-rating on review aggregator website RottenTomatoes.com. While the film currently shows an approval rating of 8% based on 36 reviews, with an average rating of 2/10, the site’s critical consensus simply displays a no symbol (“?”) in place of text.
Actor Udhayanidhi Stalin does not support anyone in the upcoming TFPC elections. The actor told Times of India that he is not expecting anything from either the Producer’s Council or the Nadigar Sangam, and that he will solve his problems on his own.
Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury’s Pink will be used to create awareness on the Zero FIR Law. Pink, which released on the 16th of September, raises the issue of sexual harassment and difficulty in getting justice for the victims. It deals with young working women in Delhi who become victims of sexual harassment and are later embroiled in the legal system due to lack of awareness of their legal rights.
Director Shiv Mohaa has been honoured with the prestigious Rocheston award for his debut film, ‘Zero’. The Rocheston Accredition Institute, New York, has conferred the ‘Distinguished Design’ award to the movie for its “exceptional artistic creation and technique”.
The movie was promoted as a romantic drama and a horror-thriller, but the only romantic element is Nivas K Prasanna’s music. The lead pair, who are in love right from Genesis, lack chemistry; their interactions are stale, their conversations facile. They disdain science and scientific theories, and many famous Hollywood horror films – Conjuring, The Exorcist – showcase a specific brand of horror that relies on Christian superstition. But there are some superior exceptions. The Shining treated insanity as an illness.
It is only in the second half that Zero’s minuses become evident. Once we realise that there is a supernatural element at work, the film loses out on suspense. And while Shiv Mohaa’s script actually clearly delineates the events that happen, we somehow begin to get the feeling that things are getting too messy and complicated. Even Solomon’s character, which is built up quite a bit as an intriguing one, turns into something of a routine.
Nivas K Prasanna’s songs are soulful while his background score elevates the movie to a different level. Debutant cinematographer Babu Kumar’s work is commendable; his vivid color tones for different situations are excellent. To conclude, audiences who seek unique attempts may like Zero. If you are one, try it out!
verall Zero may compete to be a sci-fi flick or a thriller in making and has been a surprise package that could easily make all spin a blink with wonder. An unexpected offering here, but it certainly fills this Friday’s thirst.
Zero is an edge-of-the-seat thriller with a fresh concept, fine performances and gripping screenplay.
Zero is a venture that is made with a lot of sensualism, religion and love. It deserves a watch for the efforts that the team has put into it. Though there are scenes where one might question the laws of science, the fictitious story overrides those questions.
