With the decline in Covid-19 cases in Kerala and the subsequent theatrical release of several Malayalam films, the cinema and theatre businesses in the state seems to be on the path to revival.
Movies like Kurup, Marakkar, Hridayam and Bheeshma Parvam have brought back audiences in large numbers to the theatres. In the wake of their box-office performances, the makers of many new films are announcing their release dates.
Silverscreen India brings you a list of Malayalam films that are set to premiere on the big screens in April and May.
Nowayout – April 22
Led by Ramesh Pisharody, Nowayout is an out-and-out survival thriller, the film’s writer-director Nithin Devidas earlier said to Silverscreen India. The filmmaker also told us that Nowayout was shot in a confined location – a single house. “One of the significant aspects of Nowayout are its high-risk sequences. They were very challenging to film and Ramesh put in a lot of effort to execute them well and safely,” he added.
Produced by Remosh MS under the Remo Entertainmentz banner with Seenabai Vipin serving as the executive producer, it also features Raveena Nair as the female lead and Basil Joseph in a guest role.
Jana Gana Mana – April 28
Directed by Dijo Jose Antony, the film is led by actors Prithviraj Sukumaran and Suraj Venjaramoodu. Jana Gana Mana is produced by Supriya Menon and Listin Stephen under the banners Prithviraj Production and Magical Frames, respectively. Written by Sharis Mohammed, the film is said to be a vigilante action thriller. It also stars actors Mamta Mohandas, Sri Divya, Dhruvan, and Pasupathy, among several others.
Makal – April 29
This upcoming family drama film is directed by Sathyan Anthikkad and written by Iqbal Kuttippuram. The film features Meera Jasmine, Jayaram, Devika Sanjay, Sreenivasan, Innocent, and Naslen K Gafoor and is produced by Central Pictures.
Makal marks Meera Jasmine’s comeback to cinema, after almost six years. In October 2021, the National Award-winning actor confirmed that she will be making her comeback to the Malayalam film industry through Anthikad‘s upcoming film. She noted that she has worked with Anthikad on four films previously – Achuvinte Amma, Rasathanthram, Vinodayathra, Innathe Chintha Vishayam — and was happy to collaborate with him a fifth time.
Bermuda – May 6
Directed by filmmaker Rajeev Kumar TK, Bermuda stars Shane Nigam and Vinay Forrt. Said to be a comedy film, it is produced by 24 Frames and Badushaa Cinemas. The makers revealed that the story revolves around a youngster named Indugopan (Nigam), who has resigned from his job at a bank and he goes on to file a strange complaint, which confuses the cops. Vinay Forrt plays the role of a sub-inspector named Joshua Joseph, who is also a football lover.

Djinn – May 13
This fantasy drama film is directed by Sidharth Bharathan and produced by Sudheer VK, Manu, and Mrudul V Nath, under the banner Straightline Cinemas. It features actors Soubin Shahir, Sharaf U Dheen, Shine Tom Chacko and Santhy Balachandran.
Meri Awaz Suno – May 13

This upcoming Malayalam film starring Jayasurya and Manju Warrier is written and directed by Prajesh Sen G. In an earlier conversation with Silverscreen India, Prajesh had said that Meri Awaz Suno will be a family-oriented film. “Jayasurya plays the role of a radio jockey and Manju Warrier plays a doctor in the film. This is their first collaboration. We roped in Jayasurya as he is an artist who does different characters. And since both the lead roles have equal importance, we thought Manju Warrier would be apt for this film. She liked the story and agreed to be part of the project,” he added.
Meri Awaz Suno also features actors SShivada, Johny Antony, and Gauthami Nair. Directors Shyamaprasad and Shaji Kailas make guest appearances in the film as well.
Pathaamvalavu – May 13
This Suraj Venjaramoodu and Indrajith Sukumaran-starrer is a family thriller. Produced by UGM Entertainment, Pathaamvalavu is directed by M Padmakumar. The film’s star cast includes Aditi Ravi, Swasika Vijay and child artist Kanmani, daughter of actor Muktha.
In an earlier conversation with Silverscreen India, the film’s screenwriter Abhilash Pillai said that the film is based on a true event that happened in Kerala a few years ago. “Though it is a thriller, the story will revolve around a family and its emotions. I believe this film will connect with the audience beyond Kerala,” he said, adding that Suraj will have three different looks in the film.
Jo & Jo – May 13
Jo & Jo, starring actors Mathew Thomas, Nikhila Vimal and Naslen, is said to be a humorous young adult family drama.
The film is produced by Imagin Cinemas and Signature Studios. In an earlier conversation with Silverscreen India, the debutant filmmaker Arun D Jose said, “Jo & Jo is a feel-good film that the audiences will be able to connect with. It will discuss the themes of family and friendship. The main characters in the film are all youngsters.”
Saudi Vellakka – May 20
Saudi Vellakka is directed by Tharun Moorthy and produced by Sandip Senan under the Urvasi theatres banner, which previously backed the National award-winning film Thondimuthalum Driksakshiyum. The main roles are essayed by actors Lukman, Binu Pappu, Sudhi Koppa, and Gokulan.
Earlier, Tharun told Silverscreen India that Saudi Vellakka is a family drama. “The film revolves around human emotions. It will also discuss things that we commonly see, hear and experience in every household,” he added.
