Actor Karthik Turns Hero Once Again For ‘Thee Ivan’
After the 2018 sports thriller Mr Chandramouli, actor Karthik will once again be seen on screen playing the lead in Thee Ivan. Helmed by Roja Malare (1997) fame Jayamurugan TM who also produced the recent Vijay Sethupathi starrer Sindhubaadh, the film is being bankrolled by Nirmaladevi Jayamurugan under the Manithan Cine Arts banner. Jayamurugan is also composing music and penning lyrics and dialogues for the film. He also penned lyrics for Roja Malare which was also produced by Nirmaladevi Jayamurugan.
The movie also stars Sukanya, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Arthika, ‘Sethu’ Abitha, John Vijay, Singampuli, Ilavarasu, Mascara Asmitha, Hemanth Menon, Florent Pereira, director Saravana Sakthi, Rajeswari, Sridhar, and debutant Suman J along with the director himself. YN Murali is handling cinematography with Ali Mirza composing music.
“Our society is gradually losing out on the art, culture, tradition, and social relationships it was built on. It is necessary that we educate the current generation about this crisis and that’s why I decided to make this film. Keeping the livelihood of people hailing from the Kongu Seemai region as the backdrop, it will deal with the bond between a brother and sister. I’m sure the film will join the list of popular sibling classics like Yen Thangai, Pasamalar, Mullum Malarum, Kizhakku Seemayile,” said director Jayamurugan TM.
Actor Karthik who is reportedly busy with his political duties will be essaying the role of the brother. Speaking about roping in the actor for the role, Jayamurugan said, “I felt like I’ve already succeeded when he agreed to the role instantly after listening to the script. It will definitely be a milestone in his career.”
The shooting of the film commenced last week with a puja at the Sri Selvanayaki Amman temple in the village of Keeranur situated in Tirupur. The makers have planned to finish the shoot in one single schedule at various places like Pollachi, Tirupur, Ooty, and Coimbatore.
Mr. Chandramouli was a commercial thriller helmed by director Thiru that also starred Gautham Karthik, Regina Cassandra, Varalxmi Sarathkumar, Santhosh Prathap, and Mime Gopi in important roles. The film is streaming on Netflix.

Arulnithi To Star In Youtuber Vijay Kumar Rajendran’s Debut Film
Popular YouTuber Vijay Kumar Rajendran, who is better known for his comedy channel ‘Eruma Saani’, is now venturing into full-time filmmaking. His directorial debut has just been announced. The film will feature Arulnithi in the lead, and is being produced by Aravind Singh for MNM Films.
Speaking to the media about this development, cinematographer-producer Aravind Singh said, “The film is loosely based on real-life incidents and is set in a college. When Vijay narrated the script, I was very interested. We already had Arulnithi in mind for this role. I have been the cinematographer for five of Arulnithi’s films, and I know that he will handle this concept well.”
His channel ‘Eruma Saani’, has given Vijay a fan following, and this helped start his career in films too with supporting roles. Aravind Singh said, “Since Vijay has become such an important part of the comedy portions of films, he is in high demand. I am happy about his new journey, and happy to produce his debut film.”
The film itself is in a very nascent stage since discussions are still on about the hiring of the rest of the cast and technical crew. Official announcements will be made soon.
Arulnithi is now awaiting the release of Kalathil Sandhipom produced by Super Good Films’ RB Choudary, in which he stars alongside Jiiva. His other untitled film is being produced by 5 Star Kathiresan and directed by debutant Innasi. It has wrapped up shooting and is now in post-production.
Filmmaker Pradeep Krishnamoorthy Makes His Acting Debut With ‘Kabadadaari’
The star cast of the upcoming Sibiraj starrer, Kabadadaari, has an interesting new addition, filmmaker Pradeep Krishnamoorthy. The director has been roped in for a special appearance in the film. Speaking about this development, the producer of Kabadadaari G Dhananjayan, said, “This is a film that is close to our hearts. It is an interesting story, and a major chunk of the work was in casting the right actors for these roles. It has proved to be a good method for us.”
About Pradeep Krishnamoorthy’s role, Dhananjayan said, “For one of the characters, I had in mind a person with a particularly stylish look and physique. After considering many actors, I personally thought that Pradeep would fit the bill. It took some convincing, but, he agreed and has given a great performance.”
Kabadadaari is produced by Lalitha Dhananjayan for Creative Entertainers and Distributors and is scheduled for summer a 2020 release. Featuring Sibiraj and Nandita Swetha in the lead, the film also stars Nasser, Jayaprakash, Suman Ranganathan and others. It is a remake of the critically acclaimed Kannada thriller film Kavaludaari.

A Persistent Vivek And A Puzzled Harish Kalyan Feature In This ‘Dharala Prabhu’ Trailer: Out Now
The trailer of Harish Kalyan starrer Dharala Prabhu is out now. Helmed by Yuddham Sharanam fame Krishna Marimuthu, the film is being bankrolled by Screen Scene Media Entertainment. Though the film marks the Tamil feature film debut for the director, he previously directed a promo musical ‘The Mercury Song’ for director Karthik Subbaraj’s Mercury in 2018. He was also a former assistant of director AL Vijay.
In the film, Kannadasan (Vivek) has fixed his mind on Prabhu (Harish Kalyan) as a sperm donor who can help cure couples with infertility. All goes well with the deal until his girlfriend (Tanya Hope) says she’d like to have a baby. After that, a thus far jovial and chic Prabhu turns helpless and confused, is ditched by his girlfriend, slapped by his mother (Anupama Kumar), and pursued by a relentless Vivek. The well-cut trailer is uplifted by a funky background score (credit to the eight composers). Vivek’s trademark pun in the end did manage to crack me up.
Actor Jayam Ravi took to Twitter to release the trailer.

The film is an official remake of the Ayushmann Khurrana–Yami Gautam hit Vicky Donor (2012). The story in itself was inspired by the 2011 Canadian movie Starbuck. Vicky Donor was a romantic comedy set against the backdrop of sperm donation and infertility and it won the National Film Award for ‘Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment’ at the 60th National Film Awards. It was also remade in Telugu as Naruda Donoruda starring actors Sumanth and Pallavi Subhash.
Thadam fame Tanya Hope is acting opposite Harish and actor-comedian Vivek has landed the role of the doctor (Annu Kapoor in the original). RS Shivaji, Aaditya TV fame Akalya Venkatesan, and Kumari Sachu also feature in significant roles. On the technical front, Selvakumar Sk is handling cinematography, Kripakaran is editing and Kamal is handling the production design. ‘Stunner’ Sam will be choreographing stunt, Yashwanth choreographing dance and Pallavi Singh on costumes. Subu and Sudarshan Narasimhan have penned the story of Dharala Prabhu.
The makers have roped in eight prominent music directors to compose for the film for a collaborative album instead of a conventional one to ‘bring in more flavour to the film’. The list comprises of composers Vivek Siva and Mervin J Solomon who recently composed for Pattas, Oorka The Band that made its debut in the industry with Aadai, Inno Genga, a British playback singer known for ‘Kannamma’ from Ko 2 and ‘Ullalaa’ from Petta, Sean Roldan who has composed for Pa Paandi and Velai Illa Pattadhaari 2, Bharath Shankar from the Oorka Band for a separate composition, Kaber Vasuki who is debuting as music director for Sillukaruppatti fame Halitha Shameem‘s next Aelay, Madley Blues that has composed for Sutta Kadhai (2013) and for the title track of Tamil Bigg Boss, and Anirudh Ravichander who recently composed for Darbar.
Two songs from the film have been released, ‘Aaha Ooho’ and ‘Unnaal Penne’. While the former has been composed by Oorka The Band with Bharath Shankar on the lyrics, the latter is by Inno Genga with director Vignesh Shivn penning lyrics. Videos from the dance rehearsals of ‘Aaha Ooho’ were also released recently.

Meanwhile, Harish Kalyan will also feature in the untitled Tamil remake of Pelli Choopulu helmed by Kaarthikk Sundar, Chimbu Deven’s anthology Kasada Tabara (the film has six editors, music directors, and cinematographers), and in a supernatural action entertainer by Dhanusu Raasi Neyargale fame Sanjay Bharathi.

Recently, actress Nayanthara, who was last seen with the actor in his previous film Darbar, was roped in for this film too. This marks the fourth association of the two after Chandramukhi, Kuselan, and Darbar. Apart from the actor, National Award-winning actress Keerthy Suresh, and actors Prakash Raj, Soori, Sathish, Meena, and Khushbu are also a part of the project.
While Soori and Sathish will be working with Rajinikanth for the first time, Prakash Raj was last seen with the actor as IG Subramaniam in Padayappa (1999), Meena as Ranganayaki in Muthu (1995), and Khushbu as Rekha in Pandiyan (1992).
“Working with Superstar Rajinikanth in this film produced by Sun Pictures is a dream come true for an actor like me. A mere selfie with the actor would in itself bring one happiness and knowing that I get to play a role with the star in a film makes me feel elated. Director Siva who is an expert with commercial subjects is helming this film which makes it all the more special. I’m excited to be a part of this crew,” said actor Soori.
“This is a 25-year-old dream come true for me. I could say it’s the best wedding gift I would ever receive. I thank the entire team for giving me this opportunity,” actor Sathish had said.
Meena said, “This is the first time I’ll be associating with Sun Pictures and director Siva, but this is a reunion of sorts with Rajini sir for which I’m really excited. The story has been penned really well and I play a jovial character in the film which the audience is bound to love. Eagerly looking forward to the shoot of Thalaivar 168.”
“I have kept away from Tamil films for about nine years with the sole reason to feature in a good film, and Thalaivar 168 is one such film. I have worked with Rajini sir in several films and I am extremely happy and excited to work with him again. The audience has always accepted us as a good on-screen pair and I hope they do so in this film too. It will be a different character compared to my earlier films,” said Khushbu.
The puja of Annaatthe took place on December 11, 2019, and shooting commenced at the end of the month.
The film will have music composed by D Imman, cinematography by Vetri Palanisamy, editing by Ruben, and art by Milan. Dilip Subbarayan is handling stunts with Brinda and Prem Rakshith choreographing dance. Anu Vardhan, Dhatsha Pillai, Shravya Varma, Anu Parthasarathy, and Sangeetha are working on costumes. Lyricists Viveka and Mani Amudhavan are penning lyrics, Aadhi Narayana is co-writing the script and Siva, Chandran, Savithri Muthu, and Bhagyaraj are jointly writing dialogues for Annaatthe.
Meanwhile, Rajinikanth’s Darbar is now streaming on Amazon Prime. Helmed by director AR Murugadoss, the film featured the actor as a cop ‘Aaditya Arunasalam’, long after his 1992 action-drama Pandian.

Mysskin Pays Tribute To Priya Krishnaswamy’s ‘Baaram’ With Unique Gesture
A few weeks back, director Mysskin said at the press meet of Priya Krishnaswamy’s National-Award winning film Baaram that he would go out and paste a couple of posters on walls, as a tribute to the film. Staying true to his word, the director did so on 22 February.
Mysskin sir continues to work his magic for Baaram.
Thank you so very much, sir!!https://t.co/kXJENEwxC2
— filmmakerwithoutborders (@priyadarshinik) February 22, 2020
An overwhelmed Priya Krishnaswamy said, “Such a gesture is priceless. He is one of the country’s most celebrated filmmakers. It’s heart-melting to be gifted with his support. The whole buzz about Baaram began with his speech about it at the trailer launch. My deepest gratitude to him for everything.”
Mysskin had mentioned in the press gathering that he came to know of this film through director Ram but did not believe that it was phenomenal. He added that his doubts became more after he got to know that director Vetrimaaran is releasing the film. He wanted to watch the film to decide. “I was proved wrong when I watched the movie. It felt like a tight slap on my face. I’ve always had a desire to make such movies but I still haven’t accomplished it. In fact, I went for the movie with a headache and as the film started, it gradually faded away. I couldn’t blink considering the number of emotional moments,” he said.
He added, “I can assure you that Baaram isn’t just a movie, but an enlightening piece of work, which will draw you close to your parents. While looking at the future, we all forget about our parents who raised us, including me. Baaram will be a life-changing experience for everyone. As a tribute to this film, I want to stick posters for this film in at least 20-30 places across Tamil Nadu.”
The National Award-winning film was released by Vetrimaaran’s home banner Grassroot Film Company. Priya, who is an alumnus of FTII Pune, has written and directed the movie and produced it herself under the Reckless Roses banner, with Ardra Swaroop. She holds the honour of being the first female director who has won the National Award in the Tamil film category.
Baaram features mostly first-time performers in an 85-strong cast. Some of the actors playing important roles include R Raju, Sugumar Shanmugam, SuPa Muthukumar, Jayalakshmi, and Stella Gobi. The other technical crew includes Ved Nair who is handling music and sound design, Jayanth Sethu Mathavan who is handling the camera, and Rakav Mirdath who is helping with dialogues and penning the additional screenplay.
The film hit screens on 21st February 2020. Read our review of the film here.

Mysskin Pulls Out Of ‘Thupparivalan 2’; Vishal Will Reportedly Debut As Director Now
Director Mysskin has reportedly pulled out of Thupparivalan 2 starring Vishal. The budget seems to have been the bone of contention, though there are speculations about other disagreements.
Times of India reported an unnamed source as saying that “Mysskin had started location hunting in London in August and had spent about a month-and-a-half there. But when they started shooting in November, there were problems pertaining to location permission… They shot in London till December 11 and returned to India, after spending about Rs. 12 crores for that schedule. That, coupled with this requirement for additional budget, erupted into a huge problem. Tension escalated during a discussion between them last month when Mysskin had refused to direct the film.” The report also quotes Mysskin saying (in all sarcasm), “No, I didn’t ask for 40 crores. I’ve asked 400 crores. I have finished 50 percent of the film in 100 crores. I have asked for another 100 crores for the rest of the film. For the climax portion alone, which will feature a scene of Vishal jumping from a satellite, I want an additional 100 crores. So yes, I have asked for 400 crores.”
Thupparivalan 2, the sequel to the Sherlock Holmes inspired detective thriller, stars Vishal (who plays Kanniyan Poongundran) and Prasanna (as Manohar). Mysskin had said in a statement after the release of the first film, “Everyone gets inspired from something or the other. Edgar Allen Poe came up with the first detective story and then came Sherlock Holmes. There is a thin line between inspiration and plagiarism.” He added that only Vishal and Prasanna’s characters were inspired from the novel. The sequel will have music by Ilaiyaraaja and cinematography by Nirav Shah. The first installment, Thupparivalan, was launched in March 2016, and released to huge box office success in September 2017.
Vishal will now direct the rest of the film. The actor-producer in the past has said that when he turns director he’d like to work with Vijay.
Mysskin seems to have caused the other actor in this film some heartburn as well. Recently in an interview with The Hindu, Prasanna, whose Mafia is out now, said, “We were shooting for Thupparivaalan 2 in London. I had asked Mysskin to write a stronger role this time, which he did. There was some discussion related to costumes with a London-based designer. Mysskin was giving inputs and I began to play the middleman’s role because I understand him better. I ended up picking clothes for Vishal and the costume designer asked who I was. Even before I could answer, Mysskin jumped in and said that I’m also an actor who plays a ‘sidekick’. That destroyed me. Of all people, I didn’t want Mysskin to use that word, having known me for years.”

Trump’s Filmy Diplomacy Ahead Of India Visit
US President Donald Trump’s India visit has been in the news for many things. Such as the likelihood of a trade deal being null, a wall being built in Ahmedabad to hide slums from Trump, there was even news of some paan shops being shut so people won’t spit paan on the newly spruced up roads and walls, and of course Trump saying 7 million people are going to greet him (the entire population of Ahmedabad is around that).
#WATCH US President Donald Trump in Washington on his visit to India: I happen to like PM Modi a lot. He told me we will have 7 million people between the airport and the event. It’s going to be the largest stadium in the world. It’s going to be very exciting. pic.twitter.com/FdusHCInJ9

Too Much Controversy, Too Little Cinema; The ‘Paramapadham Vilayattu’ Press Meet
If you thought press meets are platforms for the press to interact with a film’s crew and get to ask them questions, talk about cinema, the craft and the art, spare a thought for those of us who suffer them each week. Forget about artistes respecting our time and giving us an interview, it has reached a point especially in Kollywood where they’re nothing more than a source of entertainment for the press. The media and the poor invitees who make up the audience get to witness two films at once — the film they are all there to talk about and the one the crew and special guests put on in front of the press. Even if the actual film fails, you’re guaranteed some fun beforehand.
On Saturday, 22 February, lead actor Trisha Krishnan ended up bailing out of the press meet of her 60th film, Paramapadham Vilayattu. Although reasons for her absence have been kept under wraps, several friends of the director Thirugnanam who also happen to be a part of the Producers and Directors Councils lashed out against the actor.
Producer Suresh Kamatchi said that lead actors tend to believe that they’re in the top only if they refuse to attend press meets. He said that top male stars like Vijay and Rajinikanth make the efforts to promote their film. Similarly it’s a responsibility to be borne by a leading actress too when she is the only major selling point in a film. “She reached the pinnacle of success only because of the love showered by press and audiences. I don’t see the reason for not attending a press meet of your own film especially when it’s flooded with new talents who seek recognition. There’s a reason we look out for known popular artistes instead of fresh faces and fund for their projects. I wish Thiru directs his next film with someone who is willing to attend the promotional activities,” said Suresh.
Producer T Siva of Amma Creations, a good friend of Thirugnanam’s, added that a film with two lead characters would sell and can be promoted despite the absence of one lead. But when a film is headlined by only one artiste, it is essential they are present for promotions. “They need to keep in mind the lives of other budding artistes and not take it lightly. If Trisha refuses to attend the forthcoming promotional events, I as a representative of the Producers Council assure that a share of her salary would be withdrawn. Let this be a warning for the rest of the actors too,” he said.
Producer K Rajan, who is apparently known for making controversial statements (thanks to Bhagyaraj for this heads up), made so many statements against the crew it turned out to be the highlight of the event. After lashing out, he conveniently sugarcoated his statements either referring to his targets as his kin or saying “it’s a request from my side”.
He taunted Vijay Varma, playing major character in the film, saying he’d tear him into pieces if he demands a salary in crores and fails to identify this director when he turns out to be successful. Amrish was called out for delaying the re-recording process and making Rajan run around for the output. The lyricist along with the director also received a earful for realising that a wrong word was included in a song only during post production. He asked the crew to follow the footsteps of Bhagyaraj whose work doesn’t indulge in vulgarity and only serves as entertainment even for the women(!)
In the end, he expressed his displeasure at how Yogi Babu refused to complete the dubbing for a film commenced three years ago, before he turned ‘busy’. “He keeps making promises, but doesn’t seem to keep up his word. I request him to complete the required portion which would hardly take a day as soon as he returns from the shooting of his next film. He can then continue with his huge budget films. We don’t have any issues,” said Rajan.
Next it was veteran director-producer K Bhagyaraj’s turn to express his contempt. He sneered at the crew for inviting him just yesterday and added that he made it to the press meet only out of sheer respect for the film’s music director Amrish’s mother actress Jayachitra…
Another day. Another “press meet”.

Cast: Vinay Forrt, Tini Tom, Srindaa, Santhy Balachandran, Arun Kurian, Alencier Ley Lopez
Director: Shambhu Purushothaman
Music: Prashant Pillai
Shambu Purushothaman’s Paapam Cheyyathavar Kalleriyatte (Let Them Who Are Without Sin Cast The Stone) starts off with two instances of characters putting up a performance of sorts.
In the opening scene, two elite Christian families, soon to be bound by a marriage, are in an informal meeting to plan the wedding. The groom’s brother, Roy (Vinay Fort), and brother-in-law, Alex (Tini Tom) wax eloquent about the family’s reputation. When the bride’s mother offers the groom her daughter’s phone number on a piece of paper, Roy intervenes and turns it down, citing their orthodox culture. The primness on display in this meeting, you would soon realise, is a facade.
In the following scene, you see the bride and the groom (Santhy Balachandran and Arun Kurien) in a mushy romantic duet, holding hands and walking to the sunset. Another performance, this time for their ‘Save The Date’ video.
Over the course of the film, Purushothaman brings the characters down the stage, to face the hard truths they’d been ducking. Many skeletons jump out of the closets of the two families. Embarrassing secrets and financial distress that had been long swept under the carpet come out in the open. Old flames reunite. Masks fall off the faces to reveal the ugliness and hypocrisy underneath.
Purushothaman, also the film’s writer, projects this wild wedding tale as a cringe comedy that unfolds during a betrothal event. Rather than doing a character study, he hovers his camera over the sensitive situation which has the potential to burst into flames any moment.
The film proceeds through the many micro sub-plots that form on the sidelines of the main event. Roy and Alex are precariously cash-strapped. Rohan, who’s excited about the good fortune he has landed ﹣a rich girl and an insane sum of dowry ﹣realises not everything is well about his bride. His eldest sister, Lissy (Anumol), a submissive wife to an insensitive money-lender, and his mother, a dignified widow, come face to face with their pasts, adding to the brewing trouble. A stranger, an elderly womaniser equipped with a creepy smile, walks into the house and terrorises the family members with a piece of news.
The characters are an interesting motley bunch, whose reactions to situations are almost always impulsive. The film empathises with none of them but watches them from a distance and makes hilarious observations.
One of the bearers in the catering team at the event, Rajan (Anil Nedumangad), is nicknamed after the iconic romantic of the 80s’ Malayalam cinema, Venu Nagavally. The man, well past his youthful days, is still brooding over a failed romance from his college days. Rajan’s inability to move on in life becomes the butt of the film’s many jokes, just like Roy’s hypocrisy or Rohan’s mediocrity do.
Purushothaman’s film makes no fuss about moral codes. It is charmingly irreverent. Men in the film are infidels and corrupt, prone to making mistakes over and over. Women, while forced to remain within the traditional boundaries, find their own ways to protest and cross lines. Like his debut directorial Vedi Vazhipadu, Paapam Cheyyathavar Kalleriyatte too looks at human beings as inherently flawed, and it makes for some amusing complicated situations.
For one, Roy’s wife, Susan (Srindaa), unaware of the issues her husband is in, launches herself into a whirl of vengeance and self-destruction after being fed some gossip. The men of the house, caught between the old-school values ingrained in them and the new developments they encounter, react violently.
Notwithstanding this interesting approach, the film falls short of being extraordinary. Once the level of tension has reached its pinnacle, the narrative starts to go in circles, as though it has run out of things to say. The humour starts to wane, no thanks to reiteration. The film is overtly dependent on dialogues ﹣dinner-table conversations, arguments behind closed doors, secrets whispered into ears. Use the film as a radio play, and not a lot of value will be lost. Its visual style is simplistic, made up of unreasonably lit-up interiors and walls of pop colours.
And most of all, Paapam Cheyyathavar Kalleriyalle lacks the smoothness of Vedi Vazhipaadu which smartly untied the knots in the final act. Here, the climax underestimates the complexity of the situation the characters are stuck in, and abandons the viewers. Most of the characters have arrived at a fatal point of no return.
Purushothaman, rather than finding a meaningful end to this chaos, resorts to a lazy solution, like that friend of yours whose solution to clinical depression is “Cheer up!” This, at best, reflects the commercial film industry’s unhealthy obsession with happy endings.

A ‘Friends’ Reunion Is Officially Happening. What We Know So Far
So far as TV events are concerned a Friends reunion has perhaps been the most anticipated, most discussed and least plausible… Until now. The cast has remained elusive, teased fans, said maybe, no, and at last it looks like they are saying yes.
For the uninitiated, Friends, a beloved American sitcom that ran for 10 seasons, catapulted to international stardom it’s six cast members — Jennifer Anniston, Courtney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Mathew Perry, David Schwimmer, Matt Le Blanc, between 1994 and 2004.
Over the last few weeks there have been signs of a reunion. This, even as cast members Mathew Perry and Jennifer Anniston ‘broke the internet’ when they joined Instagram.
Now all six cast members have posted this on their insta:

Variety reported that the cast “will return to the original “Friends” soundstage, Stage 24, on the Warner Bros. Studio lot in Burbank to celebrate the long-running series, which ended its run in 2004.”
The star cast will reportedly be paid $2.5 million each for the special. Variety also reports that “Ben Winston will direct the special and executive produce alongside “Friends” executive producers Kevin Bright, Marta Kauffman and David Crane.”
I Had To Look Like A 17-Year-Old College Student: Radhika Madan On ‘Angrezi Medium’
After learning martial arts for her character in Mard Ko Dard Nahi Hota (2019) and gaining 12 kgs for Pataakha (2018), Radhika Madan had signed on to play a schoolgirl in Homi Adajania’s Angrezi Medium. To adapt to this role, she had to take on a drastic diet, nutrition, and workout. In this process, the actress turned vegan.
Radhika, who says she is otherwise a foodie and fitness freak, had a month to transform. She said, “I was eating read meat for Pataakha and had a lot of body fat when I had gone to auditon for Angrezi Medium. Everyone was happy with my screen test, and that pushed me into getting into shape for the role.”

The actor said that it was tough to stick to such a difficult regime, “I had to look like a 17-year-old college student so I couldn’t gain muscle. I had to show some amount of baby fat. So, I could only do yoga and cardio to look lean. I also decided to eat vegan, and it really helped me get into the skin of the character. I feel the hard work has really paid off,” she says.
Following the regime put her character at the forefront. Radhika said, “My body language changed completely. Many people don’t believe that food plays an important part in the way you think. Eating vegan has made my mindset completely unadulterated and gave me a better perspective of things.”
Angrezi Medium, a Maddock Films production, directed by Homi Adajania, releases on March 13th, 2020
Baaram Tamil Movie Review: A Shocking Truth; Many Wonderful Performances
Cast: Sugumar Shanmugam, R. Raju, Jayalakshmi, SuPa Muthukumar
Director: Priya Krishnaswamy
Music: Ved Nair
Not too often do we watch Tamil films that are about reality in the truest sense. Films that don’t adhere to any commercial mandate, not even captivating frames or beautiful lighting. A raw film that takes you inside its world and makes you feel like you are amongst the people in the frames. Tolet was possibbly the last film that did that (co-incidentally it released on the same day last year) and now we have Priya Krishnaswamy’s Baaram. Real characters, real emotions, and real sound backing a real story.
Karuppusaamy (R Raju) works as a watchman and lives happily with his sister (Jayalakshmi) and affectionate nephews Veera (Sugumar Shanmugam), Muni, and Murugan in a town down South. He meets with an accident outside his workplace, resulting in the dislocation of his hip bone rendering him immobile. His son Senthil (SuPa Muthukumar) who lives away, refuses to help him get a surgery. Instead he takes him to his hometown and euthanises him through the traditional practice of ‘Thalaikoothal’.
There is no guessing how this film is going to travel till the first half. You’re first introduced to Jayalakakshmi’s family that values the importance of kith and kin no matter how distantly related and then you have Sugumar’s family that has an aversion towards relatives. These extremes clearly show you the fate of a broken Karuppusaamy. But that doesn’t make the film tiresome at all. There’s a right play of all the emotions — anger, love, and betrayal which is spruced up by slick editing (by Priya too). And this makes the obvious rocky path a little harder to cross.
Towards the second half, Priya makes a quick shift to the docu-drama format where we find Veera not fighting against the ‘traditional practice’ but rather understanding how it works (there are more than 26 ‘varieties’ apparently) and thereby only educating us about it.
She even reflects on how the press’ voice and sensationalisation of news do no good. There’s no violence, there’s no revenge. There’s no justice either. Just like Karuppusaamy, his family is also betrayed.
Sugumar Shanmugam, the hero of sorts, who also happens to be the casting director has brought in the best actors to reprise all the roles. Right from the old lady who attends to Karuppusaamy to the policeman who twists the case in favour of the politician, everyone is natural onscreen.
Even the missteps in enunciating dialogues work in their favour and don’t seem out of place. The live sound helped enhance the mood of the film, but the music had little effect on the story.
