Raid By GST Intelligence Team Is A Rumour, It Was Routine TDS Filing, Says Vishal

As news of a raid at Vishal’s office by GST Intelligence Agency took Twitter by storm yesterday, the spokesperson for the actor dismissed the reports on his social media account. While the officials were indeed present at Vishal’s office, it was for a routine inspection and not for a raid as reported by the media. he said. Also, Vishal told Silverscreen, “Raid was a rumour. It was a routine TDS filing.”

The supposed raid took on greater significance as it came just a day after Vishal attacked H Raja for revealing that he watched a pirated version of Mersal. H Raja is a BJP leader from Tamil Nadu, and has been very vocal in his criticism of Vijay and his latest Deepavali release. He even admitted to having watched a pirated version of Mersal online. The party’s sole problem with the film is that it contains dialogues critical of PM Narendra Modi’s GST and digital India initiatives.

Atharvaa’s Next With Director Kannan Will Have Two Actresses In The Lead

Atharvaa’s next with Kannan reportedly will have two actresses in the lead. The project, which was announced recently, is expected to go on the floors soon.

Casting is currently underway for some important roles in the film.

Meanwhile, director Kannan recently met Atharvaa and uploaded a photo of the visit on his social media account.

In an interview with The Times of India, Kannan revealed that Atharvaa will play an ‘ambitious youngster’ in his film. Radhan, who rose to fame with his work in Telugu hit Arjun Reddy, will compose the music for the project. Prasanna will handle the cinematography of the film.

The first schedule of the film will begin in January 2018 in Tirunelveli, post which the team will shoot in Chennai. The director hopes to release the film by May next year.

Mersal Row: BJP Leader’s ‘Joseph Vijay’ Faux Pas Makes The Film A National Discourse

It’s day 4 of the controversy surrounding Vijay’s blockbuster Deepavali release, Mersal. Ever since BJP got into the fray, with demands by Tamil Nadu state unit chief Tamilisai Sounderrajan asking for cuts in the film, and BJP leader H. Raja’s gaffes about watching the film online, illegally, as well as “exposing” Vijay’s “bitter truth” – his name, the film has crossed borders and has become ‘national’ news.

The BJP that’s been on the back foot ever since news of the slump in the GDP was reported and is still recovering from the attacks of the Opposition, but this is one controversy they could have easily avoided.

Even if the state unit of the BJP had felt the need to call out Mersal’s portrayal of the central government’s demonetisation and GST schemes, it could have released a quiet press statement. However, Tamilisai Soundararajan and H. Raja’s antics, and the strident, shrill demands for a cut on a film that has already passed through the censor board, was somewhat of an own-goal, and ended up having a Streisand Effect on the film.

Over the last few months, there has been severe anxiety in Tamil Nadu, as people believed that there is increasing interference from the ruling party at the Centre. The BJP has never been strong in Tamil Nadu, and has always been viewed as the North Indian party. However, ever since late chief minister Jayalalithaa’s death, and the complete chaos and political instability that followed, and people of the state are extremely wary of any kind of political upheaval. The DMK has also been uncharacteristically quiet. For a party that could once capitalise on public sentiments for its political gains, the silence is very surprising.

Given all this, the public have been waiting for one icon or one big event to express their displeasure over the power vacuum. Jallikattu gave them the first opportunity. Now, Mersal has given them – and Vijay – an even bigger opportunity. Issue surrounding Mersal is no longer specific to Tamil Nadu, it has entered the national discourse. The Congress party which has been on a losing streak since 2014 has grasped onto this issue with Rahul Gandhi tweeting in favour of Mersal.

Here’s a look at the various opinions that the issue brought forth:

Aditya Sinha, writing in the MidDay, says, “But to reduce criticism of demonetisation and GST to simply political ambition is to ignore the element of social commentary that has long existed in Tamil cinema. Vijay’s latest Mersal cites these economic missteps and has made Modi squirm so much that his state unit has gone after Vijay in the true BJP manner, by reducing Vijay to some sinister Christian. Such nonsense will prove counterproductive in states such as Tamil Nadu and Kerala (the BJP avoids such boneheadedness in the North East or in Kashmir). With such office-bearers, the BJP can forget about Tamil Nadu in the proximate future.”

Sudha G Tilak, writes in The Indian Express: “The BJP, seen as a North Indian party with a swaggering saffron profile, has only shown by its inane objection to Mersal that the south, Tamil Nadu especially, is not an easy monolith to conquer, by either threat and bluster. Its own cultural heroes and brand of politics that are not immune to street fights and personality cults know only too well the art of political muscle flexing.”

G Pramod Kumar writes for The Huffington Post: Mersal is not a petty political quarrel, but a symbol of Tamil resistance to any form of top-down nationalism that has little relevance to the state. And it has been an unequivocal trend since the time of the anti-Hindi agitations in the 1930s, 40s and the 60s. The same Tamil unity had been repeated in the Sri Lankan Tamil issue, Cauvery and Mullapperiyar water disputes, and in recent times, in Jallikkattu, NEET and finally in GST.

Amid all this brouhaha, the producers of Mersal and Vijay must be having the last laugh as the film has already made close to Rs. 150 crores, and with more people seeing it, and with national coverage, this number can only go up.

Police Complaint Filed Against Actor Vijay Over ‘Mersal’ Dialogues

A Madurai based advocate has filed a complaint against Tamil actor Vijay over the dialogues in “Mersal”, said a police official.

“A complaint has been received against actor Vijay. An acknowledgement for receipt of the complaint has been issued. No first information report (FIR) had been lodged,” a police official in Anna Nagar police station in Madurai told IANS over phone on Monday.

Mersal is in the midst of a controversy after the Tamil Nadu unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) demanded the removal of certain dialogues which take a dig at the Goods and Services Tax (GST) and digital India.

Directed by Atlee, Mersal stars Vijay in the roles of a village head, a doctor and a magician. It is doing brisk business at the box office.

BJP’s National Secretary H. Raja and Tamil Nadu BJP President Tamilisai Soundararajan criticised Vijay and the movie for the dialogues critical of GST and Digital India.

The BJP leaders said the dialogues were factually incorrect.

In a tweet on Monday, Soundararajan said like the freedom to express views, one has the freedom to rebut wrong views.

Raja, who raked up the actor’s Christian origin by his tweet “Joseph Vijay’s hatred for Modi is ‘Mersal'” on October 21, continued that on Monday.

He uploaded the actor’s voter identity card and a letter written by the actor to a magazine on his letter pad.

“Truth is bitter,” tweeted Raja on Monday uploading the two documents to underscore Vijay’s religion.

Vijay, who had met Narendra Modi during electioneering ahead of the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, had even lauded demonetisation last year.

Vikram Bhatt Warns Fans About Fake Facebook Profile

Filmmaker Vikram Bhatt on Monday warned his fans to avoid following a fake profile on Facebook by his name.

Vikram shared a screenshot of the profile on Twitter and wrote: “This is not my Facebook profile. Be warned. Someone is pretending to be me and trap innocent aspirants. This is dangerous! Cyber Crime Cell”

The screenshot shows a post from the fake profile regarding a casting call for actors.

Bhatt is best known for directing films like Jaanam, Raaz among others. His web series Maaya, which grabbed attention as the first Indian fictional work on BDSM (bondage, discipline, sadism and masochism), was screened at the Marseille web fest in France on October 20.

Trisha Krishnan Walks Out Of ‘Saamy Square’

Trisha Krishnan has walked out of Saamy Square. The actor took to social media to announce her departure from the project.

The actor cited creative differences as the reason for her decision to walk out.

The original had Vikram and Trisha Krishnan in lead roles. For the sequel, Hari roped in actor Keerthy Suresh as well, calling into question the nature of Trisha’s role in the film.

The production team behind the film is yet to comment on Trisha’s exit from the film. Trisha’s replacement is expected to be found soon.

‘Bugsy’ Director James Toback Accused Of Sexual Harassment

Oscar-nominated writer-director James Toback has been accused of sexually harassing at least 38 women stemming back to at least the 1980s.

A Los Angeles Times report explains that while some of the women were looking for work in the entertainment industry at the time of the alleged incidents, others were simply approached by Toback, reports variety.com.

Out of the 38, as many as 31 of the women spoke about it, and detailed various incidents in which Toback allegedly made lewd suggestions, steered conversations into sexually explicit territory, and rubbed against them until he ejaculated into his pants or on their bodies.

“The way he presented it, it was like, ‘This is how things are done’,” actress Adrienne LaValley said of a 2008 hotel room encounter that ended with Toback trying to rub his crotch against her leg.

When she recoiled, he stood up and ejaculated in his pants.

“I felt like a prostitute, an utter disappointment to myself, my parents, my friends,” LaValley added.

Although Toback is not a widely recognised name outside of the film community, his writing credits include Tyson, The Gambler, and The Pick-Up Artist.

He has made films with prominent actors like James Caan and Robert Downey, Jr.

Other women named in the Times’ piece include Starr Rinaldi, Louise Post, Karen Sklaire, Anna Scott, Echo Danon, and Chantal Cousineau. All of them recounted incidents in which they experienced some form of harassment from Toback.

Mindhunter: Not Just A Crime Thriller On Serial Killers, It’s Also A Study Of 70s America

“Venture into the darkness and shine a light into the darkness,” is what Holden Ford, the young rebellious FBI agent, sums up his job as. He is fascinated by the psychology of criminals, while his department is only interested in eliminating the weed. This conflict is where Mindhunter, the latest Netflix breakout series created by Joe Penhall and co-produced by David Fincher, starts off.

Ten episodes down, Mindhunter has proved itself to be an arresting crime drama set in the tumultuous America of the late 70s, right after Vietnam war when anti-establishment rage was fuming around. Two FBI agents decide to take the unfamiliar and rugged road of criminal psychology to solve crimes. But they have to convince their extremely skeptic bosses first.

The high point of Mindhunter is not action scenes (which are hardly there), but in scenes of conversation. Cops talking to cops. Cops talking to psychopaths. Male cops talking to women who are smarter than them, trying to gauge the emotional and intellectual distance between them. There is Ed Kemper, a character based on a real life namesake, a serial killer who murdered his grandparents and many women, including his mother, and had sex with their corpses. When we see him in Mindhunter, he is a refined talker, having spent over seven years at the federal correction facility. What can possibly come out of the mouth of a man who has mastered the art of talking to cops? It turns out that some of the best moments in the entire series belong to this man, six-foot five inches tall, bespectacled, and strangely calm. The waves of violence lurks beneath the placid facade that he has created for himself. He offers his experiences as an expert murderer to the use of FBI, and at one point, expresses a wish to write a book someday.

Parallels could be drawn between Holden and Zodiac’s Robert Greysmith, for they share an obsessive interest in pursuing the dark. If Robert was hysterically into one killer, Holden is vehemently trying to implement a new awakening that he has – that sociology and psychology can really change the way his department works. He is shrewdly self-centered, and quite unapologetic about it. The transformation of Holden from a straight-faced curious young agent to a man who grows bigger than his team, and eventually, gets demolished by his own devils, is fantastically portrayed.

Holden is based on John E Douglas, the famed FBI agent whose 1995 book, Mind Hunter: Inside The FBI’s Elite Serial Crime Unit served as an inspiration to Fincher and Penhall in creating the series. This isn’t the first time someone has made a crime drama based on Douglas. Jack Crawford, a character that appears in Thomas Harris’ books in Hannibal Lector series, was modeled on Douglas.

Apart from the thrills that it offer, Mindhunter is also a careful study of America in the late 70s. Does the society create the criminals, or are they born that way, crazy and genetically violent? Does a gun in the car give a potential killer a kick to start a murder spree? Does the government, which has committed far greater crimes such as the war that annihilated a generation of men and women, have the right to run a force like FBI? What does one become when the only people you are able to communicate freely is a bunch of criminals whom you consider as your ‘friends’? This is bigger than just a cop story.

Women, Cinema & Sexism: ‘Speaking Up Is Not A Practical Option In Kollywood’

‘Women, Cinema & Sexism’ features stories of women who work in the film industry and documents their experiences on sets – the good, the bad and the ugly

In the feel-good Secret Superstar, during the recording of Insia’s first song for Shakti Kumar, an ‘interesting’ scene plays on in the background. Interesting, because, we live in the times of Harvey Weinstein. An overweight producer and his young, stylish moll, possibly a starlet, cozy up and take selfies as Insia sings her heart out. No one in the room seems to mind what’s happening in the background.

Shakti Kumar, who initially comes across as obnoxious and feeling he owns the world, makes a clear difference between ‘babes’ and ‘beta’. He flirts with all he meets (but does mentor Insia). This “not minding” and “accepting as normal” such things is what has led to the film industry, across the world, finding itself getting mentioned in not-so-honorable terms.

Former CBFC chief Pahlaj Nihalani has been quoted as saying, “There are Harvey Weinsteins in Bollywood too. They continue to exploit hapless strugglers because they are not held liable for their dirty deeds. This is the time to expose them.” The scene has been/continues to be no different in Tamil, says a veteran manager of the stars. “I’ve been in the industry for 30-odd years, and I’ve seen too much. Even if I scratch the surface of the scandals, you will cringe,” he says in a phone interview on condition of anonymity.

He speaks of directors and producers insisting that heroines visit them in hotel rooms for story discussions, of businessmen who invite actresses for store inaugurations presuming they ‘own’ the artiste because money has been paid, of actors who abuse younger co-stars on sets, and, finally, of family that derides them for being part of an ‘unholy’ industry but still lays claim to fame and fortune.

“This is why I insist that all dealings are routed through me. I need to know exactly where the artiste I am representing is during work, and who is around her. While some might think this is a stifling environment, it is the safest way,” he says. The manager says he knows what he’s speaking about, even if it might seem as too extreme a view. “I’ve seen girls suffer. I’ve seen some driven to the edge. Some even die. This industry is great for those with a support system. It works well for those who choose to bend to ‘demands’; it can be cruel to those who are all alone but who seek to make their space while holding on to their principles.”

It was difficult to get actors and actresses to lend their name to this story; but they were more than willing to speak off the record. An actor known for his sensitive portrayals on-screen admits such things happen, but, more often than not, none of it happens openly. “Also, in case I witness something like this on the sets, and notice that the actress in question is uncomfortable with the attention or with the physical proximity forced on her, I might speak up. I don’t know how many might, because you’re going to antagonise someone with your action. It could mean your ouster from projects, or even being black-listed. For those who know only films and have little else to fall back on, that’s a scary proposition. And so, turning your face the other way around is an easier, ‘practical’ option.”

Recently, actress Sai Dhansika was driven to tears on stage when actor-director T. Rajendhar derided her because he felt slighted that she did not mention him in her speech, and said she lacked stage etiquette. This, even as he performed a spectacular monologue to show what little etiquette he possessed. The other actors on stage laughed at the actress’ plight; only to issue online apology notes following a severe social media backlash.

What Dhansika endured on stage is a small sample of how women are treated in the industry. Even someone as accomplished as Dhansika, who has a clutch of good performances behind her.

Actress Saranya Ponvannan, who entered the industry on a Deepavali day three decades ago, with Nayakan, says that she managed to steer clear of such people by being very choosy about whom she works with. “I always put in place some rules even as heroine. I would only meet people at home, in the comfort of my space. I would never agree to meet them outside or in hotels. I would never appear desperate to bag a role; that’s a dead giveaway, and will weaken your position in times of crisis. What has to come your way will, at some stage. If you enter the ‘survival of the fittest’ game, you’re doomed.”

That’s something the manager of the stars agrees with. “You must never ever sound too anxious for anything. You must hold your ground; that way, they tend to respect you, and will approach you, instead of the other way around.”

The manager is convinced that if people start spilling the beans, a lot of issues will crop up. But, even then, there will no resolution in sight till people speak up.

Mersal Row: How The BJP Created A Streisand Effect & Gave Additional Publicity To The Film

Mersal was always going to get a lot of publicity. It’s a Vijay film released for Deepavali. It has a huge star cast, and Vijay – who has grown to superstardom – plays three characters in the film. Publicity was never going to be a problem for the film.

What the producers, director, star, and the fans and audience wouldn’t have expected, and are drinking it all in and thanking their stars, is the additional publicity from the Tamil Nadu state unit of the BJP. Tamilisai Sunderrajan claimed that scenes in the film criticised BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and demanded the producers cut the scenes from the film. The scenes that they wanted to cut were oblique references, without mentioning names or political parties or leaders, was about GST and demonetisation.

The producers – Thenandal Films – haven’t confirmed yet if they will indeed cut the scenes owing to pressure. The indecision is helping them. Support began pouring in from everybody, with filmmakers, fans (and even rival Ajith’s fans), politicians not from the BJP, all adding to the debate over the cuts.

A hashtag on twitter, #MersalvsModi has gone viral and is bringing together everybody against the BJP, and in support of Vijay and Mersal.

The Mersal row has once again brought up public debate on free speech and cinema’s ability to make fun of politics. Often, artists are attacked for giving voice to public sentiment. Today, it is Vijay. Tomorrow, it will be another target. With each attack, the party in power and the government establishes a new “high water” mark of what is acceptable and what is not. Criticism, dissent, and free speech will be replaced with blind obedience, and sycophancy.

But in the meanwhile, Mersal fans and Vijay can take comfort in the fact that all this additional publicity is helping keep the cash registers at the box office ticking. The Indian Express reported that the film had earned about 35 crores in India, and about 45 crores internationally, on its opening day. India Today is now reporting that the film will probably hit and cross the 100 crore mark this weekend, in domestic ticket sales. Even North Indians, and Ajith fans, are going in to see the film. Deepavali blockbuster indeed, courtesy a late-bursting firecracker from BJP.

Biopic On MGR On The Cards, Sathyaraj Likely To Play The Role

A biopic on founder of the AIADMK party, and former chief minister – MG Ramachandran – is on the cards.

According to an earlier report in The Hindu, the film will be directed by Balakrishna, on a script written by Chembur Jayaraj. The MGR biopic will cover a large part of the actor and politician’s life, from his days as a member of an amateur theatre group, to his rise as the biggest star in Tamil cinema, and his switch to politics and the growing Dravidian movement. The film will be produced by Ramana Communications, a production house which earlier made the biopic of Kamaraj, a former chief minister.

Sources say the film will be launched by the chief minister of the state, Edappadi Palanisamy, on November 8.

The Hindu report says that Sathyaraj may be cast to play MGR. “Talks are on to cast Sathyaraj in that role. He, being an ardent fan of MGR, is sure to agree. The only problem will be his height, which we intend to set right using technology. We are yet to finalise the artistes who will be playing the role of Kalaignar, Janaki, and Jayalalithaa,” Balakrishna told The Hindu.

The film has Anirudh Ravichander on board to score the music, with the shoot commencing in February next year. Anirudh, who attended the launch today, tweeted a few pics:

A delighted fan tweeted:

Trivikram is currently directing a film with Pawan Kalyan, which is bankrolled by Haarika & Haasine. The same production house is producing Junior NTR’s film as well.

Trivikram’s film with Pawan Kalyan will be complete by November and the team is planning for a Sankranthi release.

Mersal Row: BJP National Secretary H Raja’s Tweet On ‘Joseph Vijay’ Stirs Up A Hornet’s Nest

Controversy surrounding Mersal has taken a political turn. After Tamil Nadu BJP’s demand of removal of scenes pertaining to GST and demonetisation failed, H Raja, spokesperson and national secretary of the party has tweeted actor Vijay’s voter ID card and saying ‘truth is bitter.’

Referring Vijay as Joseph Vijay and targeting him for being Christian is a new low for BJP. H Raja, in an interview to The Indian Express, also claimed that “may be producer Hema Rukmani also a Christian.”

“Everyone has the right to criticise the BJP government on any medium. But the criticism should be based on facts,” he was quoted as saying.

Raja’s criticism came after Tamilisai Soundararajan, BJP Tamil Nadu chief, slammed Vijay for his dialogues on GST in Mersal. She said, “Vijay is intentionally maligning the reputation and good work of our Prime Minister. He wants to enter politics and so he is trying to get the attention of people by criticising GST and Digital India.”

The makers released an official statement yesterday saying that the film has not been made to hurt anybody or government and they also said that they are ready to remove the controversial scenes from the film. “We have met BJP leaders and explained our opinion  and they also accepted our explanation,” read the statement.

In response to H Raja’s tweet, Vijay’s father SA Chandrashekar termed the attack as “childish”.

In the middle of this, support for Vijay grew.

Commenting on H Raja’s tweet, CS Amudhan, director,  tweeted:

Cinematographer Ravi Varman Likely To Be Roped In For Indian 2

A source from Indian 2 says that cinematographer Ravi Varman is the most likely choice to handle the film. Dil Raju and director Shankar are said to have zeroed in on the cinematographer, as he has the best experience for shooting a film of this magnitude.

Says the source:

“Ravi Varman is high on the list of probable candidates for DoP of the movie. Some other leading cinematographers are also under consideration, but Ravi Varman’s previous collaborations with both Kamal Haasan and Shankar make him the most desirable candidate.”

Kamal Haasan returns as freedom fighter-turned-vigilante Senapathy in the sequel to the 1996  film Indian. The project was announced in September this year.

Vijay Milton: ‘Happy To Team Up With Gautham Menon For Goli Soda 2’

Vijay Milton says that his recent collaboration with director Gautham Menon for Goli Soda 2 has made him “very happy”. A photo of the film’s lead Samuthirakani, Milton and Gautham from the sets of Goli Soda 2 was uploaded recently and elicited favourable response on social media.

Through a press release, Milton expressed his excitement at getting to work with Gautham.

“While writing the script itself, I decided that it would be great if Gautham Menon does this special appearance because this is a cameo of much relevance and this character is very important to take the story forward.”

Gautham’s character in the film will be an extension of his real life personality, Milton said.

“This character will be an extension of Gautham’s real life character that is the reason why I was particular in him doing it. We are so glad and thrilled that he is doing it. The last schedule shoot is going on and we are thrilled with the way the movie is shaping up.”

The film is in the last stages of filming, and is set to be wrapped up soon.

Mersal Row: Rajinikanth Comes Out In Support Of Vijay, Tweets ‘Important Topic Addressed’

Rajinikanth has tweeted in support of the team behind Vijay’s Mersal. The film has found itself in controversy after the Tamil Nadu unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) demanded removal of specific dialogues which take a dig at the Goods and Services Tax (GST) and digital India.

“Important topic addressed… Well done!!! Congratulations team ‘Mersal’,” Rajinikanth tweeted late Sunday.

Politicians, including Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi and DMK leader M.K. Stalin, apart from actor Kamal Haasan have slammed the BJP’s attempt to muzzle criticism regarding its policies.

Earlier this week, BJP National Secretary H. Raja even raked up actor Vijay’s Christian origins.

“Joseph Vijay’s hatred for Modi is Mersal’” he wrote, adding a communal flavour to the row.

Directed by Atlee, Mersal stars Vijay in the roles of a village head, a doctor and a magician. It is doing brisk business at the box office.

Actor-filmmaker Farhan Akhtar has taken a dig at BJP spokesperson G.V.L. Narasimha Rao over his remarks that most Indian film stars have “very low IQ and very low general knowledge”.

Farhan’s comment was in reaction to an interview Rao gave to Times Now TV over the ongoing controversy on Tamil film Mersal that has scenes critical of the GST and the Digital India initiatives of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Rao, criticising the movie and its makers in the TV interview, said: “In any case, most of our film stars have very low IQ, very low general knowledge.”

Box Office Roundup: Mersal Makes Waves In The International Market; Golmaal Again Has The Second Biggest Opener This Year

Last week was all about Mersal. Vijay’s film stumbled from one controversy to the other with the film releasing on Diwali. Tamil Nadu BJP’s stand against the film has snowballed into a big row but from the business perspective it’s not such a bad news for Mersal’s producers. Golmaal Again, despite what critics said, has managed to bring in the moolah and overtake Aamir Khan’s Secret Superstar.

Mersal (Tamil)

A film that has been pegged as the most-awaited one in Kollywood, Vijay’s Mersal finally released on Diwali. A few days since its release, and the whole country is already talking about it. What began with people comparing similarities between Atlee’s film and the Kamal Haasan-starrer Aboorva Sagodharargal, it has now become a political controversy, with Tamil Nadu BJP opposing the criticism of GST and demonestisation in the film.

Starring Vijay in triple roles, the film has a star cast of Samantha Ruth Prabhu, Kajal Aggarwal, Nithya Menen, Vadivelu, and S J Suryah. With music by AR Rahman, it has the distinction of being Thenandal Film’s 100th project.

The film opened to a record-breaking box-office collection in Tamil Nadu. According to a report in Forbes, first day collection was approximately Rs 31.3 crore. With Rs 18-19 crore gross collection in Tamil Nadu alone, Mersal is now next to Rajinikanth’s Kabali, which collected Rs 23.5 crore in Tamil Nadu on its opening day last July.

Overseas, also Mersal is doing a great business. Mersal beat the opening day grosses of Dangal and Raees in the United States, and as of Wednesday, it was approaching a $500,000 total there. Openings in other territories were at or near record levels, with the UK tallying £94,311 (₹ 81 lakhs), Malaysia scoring MYR 586,665 (₹90.3 lakhs), and Australia A$33,057 (₹ 68 lakhs),” reported Forbes.

According to trade analyst Taran Adarsh, Mersal is “collecting more than the two Hindi releases in some key international markets.”

Secret Superstar (Hindi)

The Advait Chandan directorial, which released on Thursday, revolves around a teenager named Insiya (Zaira Wasim), who dreams of becoming a famous singer and how she changes her life and the lives of everyone around her. Aamir Khan plays the quirky character of Shakti Kumaarr in the movie.

The film had a good start on Diwali and is garnering strong word of mouth, read a statement issued on behalf of the makers.

According to trade analyst Taran Adarsh, Secret Superstar released in 1,750 screens across India and in 1,090 screens overseas, minting Rs 4.80 crores on its opening day. On Friday, the film made Rs 9.30 crores, and on Saturday, the film made Rs 8.65 crores, in total making Rs 22.75 crores in India alone.

H Raja Admits To Watching ‘Mersal’ Online & TFPC President Vishal Is Not Happy

As the row between Tamil Nadu BJP members and Mersal’s makers intensifies, H Raja, a BJP MLA, recently went on record to say that he watched the film online, implying that it was a pirated copy. Tamil Nadu Producers’ Council President Vishal was not happy about this, considering he has been voicing against piracy for the last few years.

Taking to social media, the actor called H Raja’s admission “totally insensitive and uncalled for”.

H Raja was on a news segment featured in Puthiya Thalamurai TV when he was asked if he had seen Mersal. He said yes, he had, having watched it online. Mersal, starring Vijay and directed by Atlee, released in the theatres last week.

On Friday, the BJP leader, who is also a national secretary of the party, attributed communal motives to the movie’s dialogues in a tweet that referred to the lead actor’s rarely used Christian name while criticising “Joseph Vijay’s hate campaign against (Prime Minister) Modi.”

“Everyone has the right to criticise the BJP government on any medium. But the criticism should be based on facts,” Raja told The Indian Express. The BJP leader claimed that he was “trying to confirm” whether the producer Hema Rukmani of Thenandal Studios Ltd “may also be a Christian”.

George Clooney: “Hope This Is A Watershed Moment In Society”

Actor George Clooney hopes the current scenario where women are voicing their cases of sexual harassment is a “watershed moment for society where women feel safe enough” to talk about the issue.

On Sunday, at the premiere of his latest directorial foray “Suburbicon”, Clooney talked about the issue, reports thehollywoodreporter.com.

“What we hope is this is a watershed moment for society where women feel safe enough to talk about this issue, feel believed and where men who are committing these crimes and violations don’t feel safe and feel as if they do these things they’re going to be outed, sued and may even get litigated and go to jail for it,” said Clooney.

“If we can get to that point then we actually succeeded. This thing won’t end up just being Harvey Weinstein jokes in three months,” he added.

In addition, stars including Jessica Chastain, Brie Larson, Patricia Arquette, Judd Apatow and Seth Rogen have all spoken out in one way or another.

Clooney also spoke out against filmmaker Woody Allen’s remark that Hollywood had created a “witch hunt atmosphere” after several actresses blamed Weinstein of sexually harassing them.

“That’s a stupid thing to say,” Clooney responded.

“The reality is it’s not a witch hunt to these women who were trapped in a hotel room and told they were going to get a part and then suddenly here comes Harvey Weinstein in his birthday suit. That’s an assault. It’s not just Hollywood it’s all of society and we’re going to have to come to terms with it because we haven’t yet,” he added.

“It’s infuriating and it’s also infuriating when I read stories about reporters who did investigations and didn’t print it for 10 years. Then you go, ‘Why didn’t you print that story? I would have liked to have seen it. And I would like to know who brought actresses up to Harvey Weinstein’s room and then left. I’d like to know that’.”

Actor Matt Damon remains optimistic about how these stories can bring change.

“I really do believe there is going to be major change. There won’t be this type of behaviour anymore,” said Damon.

Damon hopes victims of these crimes speak out worldwide and not just in Hollywood.
