Actor Pooja Hegde on Tuesday issued a clarification after she faced backlash on social media over an interview with journalist and film critic Anupama Chopra in which she had said that the South film industries have an “obsession with navels and midriffs”.
In her statement, the actor said that her comments were misinterpreted and that she was forever indebted to the Telugu film industry.
“Yes, Allu Arjun’s character is obsessed with my legs in the film. But after pointing it out to Trivikram about how it could come across, he added scenes where she punishes him for being so blatant about it. She also makes him see the error of his ways, but not everyone could grasp that. But of course, objectification is never okay!” Hegde said while talking about a scene from her recent film Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo with Allu Arjun.
“Things I said in a recent interview are being misinterpreted. The things I said can be twisted but the love I have for Tollywood cannot be. Telugu film industry has always been vital for me. This is even known to my fans who love my movies. I always say I will never give in to misunderstandings but I will still reinstate, I will forever be indebted to the Telugu film industry,” she said in the statement.
This is not the first time an actor has been called out for standing up against the objectification of women. In 2017, actor Taapsee Pannu was forced to issue a similar clarification following a backlash against her comments on Telugu filmmaker Raghavendra Rao’s “obsession” with women’s midriffs, during an interaction on a YouTube channel.
Talking about Rao, Pannuhad said: “The director, who launched me, is known to show the sensuality of a woman by showing the midriff and throwing fruits and flowers on the midriff. My turn came, and maybe because I was not prepared as I told you, they threw a coconut at me! I don’t know what’s sensuous about a coconut hitting my midriff.”
After facing severe backlash, the actor uploaded a video, saying: “It is not in my upbringing that I will hurt anyone who has been such an important part of my journey. Raghavendra Rao garu is the reason I am here in the industry in the first place, and I can never forget that. It is just strange how everyone alleged that I insulted him, but I did not, I will never. So, I really want to apologise if I have hurt anyone’s sentiment. But trust me, I did not intend to.”

In late September, Adil Hussain bagged the Best Actor award at the Indo-German Film Week in Berlin for his performances in Pareeksha and Nirvana Inn. In mid-October, the third season of Star Trek: Discovery, in which Hussain has starred in, was released.
The pilot episode opens with a shot of Hussain, waking up in Star Fleet pyjamas, switching off a holographic bird alarm clock, brushing his teeth with laser beams and proceeding to sit on a table. The camera then zooms into Hussain’s face as he hopefully waits for somebody, anybody, to show up.
One might assume Hussain is on cloud nine, but he remains as grounded as ever. This is a “pre-requisite and not a virtue”, he tells Swathy Iyer of Silverscreen India from his hometown in Goalpara, Assam, where he is shooting a film. The actor’s filmography, boasting of some impressive titles like Life Of Pi, Tigers and The Reluctant Fundamentalist, is peppered with several home-grown short and independent films, which he treats as his primary priority. Through these films, he feels he has “contributed to the society, artistically”.
His short film Meal recently won the Best Short Film award at the Ottawa Indian Film Festival.
“When they (independent filmmakers) approach me with a role, I feel I am lucky. For example, this film Meal– it’s a small, short film. It is small in terms of the length and the budget but artistically, it’s a huge film. So, am I not the person who gains by being in the film, by being able to experience the life of the role that the writer has written with so much passion? I feel grateful to them because they gave me an opportunity to act in a complexly written role. How many people get to do that?” he questions.
The commercial film titles in his filmography are only a means to an end, he says.
“It (the script) doesn’t necessarily need to have a social message or a political message, no. But it has to have a human message. Among the scripts that I read, I look at them to see which has an element of this particular aspect where the writer and director are digging deep into human behaviour and nature and the complexities of human interactions- it’s not black and white. Having said that, I also did films which are black and white. When I do commercial films- for instance, I do not want to name any of them- but when I do that, I needed money to subsidise my involvement in independent films because independent films do not have money. They need very little, but I want to participate in those films as well,” says Hussain.
Hussain says a lot of his independent projects have come to him directly.
“My Twitter and Facebook messages are open, I get a lot of work through them. I keep it purposely open so that all these young, independent filmmakers, who are now exposed to world cinema and are looking at society critically and are trying to make films, have an avenue to get in touch with me,” he says.
“This should be normal for anybody.”
“Some people might consider you as a big actor, they may use such words, but I say it is important for any practitioner of the arts to keep their feet on the ground, it is a pre-requisite, not a virtue. It cannot be looked at as a virtue, I understand why they look at it as a virtue- because very few people do it. My version is that this is not a virtue at all. If you call yourself a practitioner of arts, if your feet are not on the ground then how will you see the nuances of life?”
“I do not depend on anybody else for picking scripts. That is completely my choice. Who else would know what are the complexities of my world view? Yes, there are some good friends who might know but they have other jobs!” Hussain chuckles.
“The choices that I make are the consequence of films that came to me. They chose me first and I chose them. It’s on equal ground. I don’t have an agent in India, neither did I have an agent in Hollywood till about three years ago. In Hollywood, I must have an agent otherwise nobody is going to work with me, that is the reason I have one otherwise, I wouldn’t. Agents, what they generally do is, they keep an eye out for roles which will suit my age, my description, my ethnicity, my acting capability and all that. In India, I don’t have an agent, I have a manager, who does not look out for work for me. So, I chose from the things which came my way, that must be kept in mind. If there is someone who is looking for me and if I am supposed to act in that, the universe will conspire. I completely, truly believe in that fact.”
The sense of humanity on Star Trek
Hussain, who calls himself a “keen observer” of the life around him, says he draws a lot from his personal experiences in his acting.
“If you’re a keen observer of life and if you’re an empath, then you see things that are happening around you. The body records everything whether you want it or not. The five senses are a miracle, they record everything, some things you remember, some things you forget. Our job as an actor is to equip ourselves with the tools to recall those forgotten things. That’s the training that I got from my teachers,” he says.
Even Star Trek, which is set in space, has strong human elements, according to him.
“This person in Star Trek had been waiting for somebody for 40 years in a spaceship. Have you not waited for someone to show up for at least an hour?”
“I’m spoilt by that experience. The level of professionalism, the standard of precision and meticulousness is top-notch, high-end. Also, the most important thing, what touched me the most was the humanness of the stars who acted in Star Trek. They’re such great human beings. The essential theme of Star Trek is inclusiveness. This was the most beautiful experience I had- working with the actors, the director, producer, it was a great time,” he adds.
Goalpara, Assam and how it shaped him as an actor
Acting, says Hussain, came to him very naturally since he grew up in Goalpara. He first began acting at the age of eight, when he acted in a play in kindergarten and has continued to act since then.
“The town that I grew up in, where I am speaking from right now- Goalpara in Assam, is a very culturally vibrant place, there are lots of theatre groups, dance groups, music bands, folk theatre groups and folk dance groups, it’s a very culturally alive place and it still is, in a way. Lesser than before, but still there. So, it came naturally to me because I had seen my older brother performing and my neighbourhood friends and their brothers and sisters all participating in events and folk festivals and all that.”
However, Hussain’s father would have preferred it if his son became an English professor in Goalpara.
“In terms of career, people thought that it would be a disaster to take that as your only option to earn money. My father did not approve of it, though he loved art and culture. He was worried how would I earn my living (laughs). So, he suggested I should do my masters in English and become a professor in English in the college in our town. But I refused to do that and I went ahead and continued to do theatre. Then I came to know about the National Institute of Drama,” he says.
“Before I went to the National Institute of Drama, when I was doing my graduation- which I did not complete by the way- during that time in Guwahati, which is 150 kms away from my hometown, there I started doing theatre. From theatre, I got opportunities to act in films. I acted in five to six films, radio plays, street plays, video films, tele films. In that period, I came to know about the National Institute of Drama. In those days without Google and all that, I came to know about it, I applied and got a seat. Thankfully the expenses were looked after by the government. At the institute if you get a seat, you get a scholarship. I was lucky enough, because otherwise my father wouldn’t have been able to afford it. So, Goalpara and Assam have played a very important role in my life in order to equip me with the vast experiences of theatre and acting, music and dance,” he says
How acting came to his rescue during a pandemic
“When you’re home for a long time, without any engagement and an uncertain future, in terms of work and resource earning as well, my entire training of becoming a decent actor- learning the craft decently enough- those things came very handy,” says Hussain.
“There is an inner mechanism which I have been helped to discover by my teachers. No matter what the outside situation is, there is an inner mechanism which one can utilise in order to remain joyous in spite of the onslaught of different kinds of things happening around you.”
After several months of break from acting, Hussain is shooting the sequel of the hit 1969 Assamese film Dr. Bezbarua in Tezpur. In December, he will travel to Birmingham to begin shooting for British-Indian film Footprints On Water.
“All these projects, it just so happened that they got in touch with me through casting directors and I auditioned and the role was offered to me. There is no strategy behind it. The only strategy could be energy (laughs), that I had a strong desire to act in that script and somehow the universe conspired for me. That is the only way I can describe it,” he says.
Film critic and film trade analyst Taran Adarsh’s tweet on November 7 said:
“BIGGG NEWS… #AjayDevgn to direct #AmitabhBachchan… An edge-of-the-seat human drama… Titled #Mayday… #Ajay is playing a pilot in the film… Remaining cast under finalisation… Produced and directed by #AjayDevgn… Starts this Dec in #Hyderabad.”
Neither of the actors have posted anything in relation to the same.
The thriller will mark the reunion of the actors after a seven-year gap. They have previously worked in films like Major Sahab, Khakee and Satyagraha.
While details about Bachchan’s role have not been revealed yet, Devgn will reportedly be seen playing the role of a pilot.
Mayday will be produced by Devgn under the banner Ajay Devgn Films.
The word ‘mayday’ is a distress call used to signal life-threatening emergency, usually on a ship or a plane. A distress starts with the word ‘mayday’ being said three times in a row, so that it is not mistaken for another similar-sounding word or phrase. This is followed by relaying the information that rescuers would need, including the nature of the emergency, the location or last known location, current weather, type and identity of craft involved, fuel remaining and the number of people in danger. The distress call has absolute priority over all other transmissions, as reported by the Mint.
While Devgn has directed films in the past, including, Shivaay and U Me Aur Hum, this will be his first time directing Bachchan.
The film will reportedly begin filming in December after the actors complete their current commitments.
Bachchan is shooting for Sony TV’s reality show Kaun Banega Crorepati, which he hosts. He was last seen in Gulabo Sitabo which released earlier this year on Amazon Prime Video and his upcoming works include Jhund, Chehre and Brahmastra.
With Diwali around the corner and amid the ongoing deadlock over the Virtual Print Fee (VPF) between the Tamil Film Active Producers’ Association (TFAPA) and service producers, Tamil Nadu Theatre Owners Association president Tiruppur Subramaniam on Saturday assured that theatres will reopen as planned on November 10.
“The producers and service providers are still in talks regarding the VPF issue. They will come to a decision today. Theatres will definitely reopen on November 10. There are no issues between the producers and us. We have a smooth relationship with them. So there are no problems and the theatres will reopen on Nov 10. I am sure they will come to a good decision that favours both sides,” he told Silverscreen India.
Qube Cinema co-founder Senthil Kumar told Silverscreen India that “intermediaries are trying hard to resolve the matter”.
TFAPA head Bharathiraja announced on Monday that no new Tamil films will be released until the deadlock over VPF charges was resolved by theatre owners.
In a press release, Bharathiraja had said that producers had come to this decision after service providers did not pay heed to five requests made by the TFAPA. He said that producers have agreed to pay only the one-time charge, which includes mastering, cloning and delivering.
Among the five requests made, the TFAPA said that they were unwilling to bear the VPF to service providers Qube Cinema and UFO Moviez, which they had been doing for the last 10 years.
Last month, Qube Cinema put out a statement stating that they had temporarily reduced VPF by 50% from the current price list for digital cinema initiatives and e-cinema, to help producers release more films in theatres.
After a lull of almost seven months, theatres and multiplexes in Tamil Nadu are gearing up to reopen on November 10. Regarding the same, the state government released a set of standard operating procedures for cinema halls on Tuesday. The guidelines include 50% capacity, touch-free sanitisers, mandatory masks and thermal scanners, among other things.
Actor Kamal Haasan’s 232nd and upcoming Tamil film has been titled Vikram, the title teaser of which was released by the film’s director, Lokesh Kanagaraj, on Kamal’s 66th birthday, on Saturday.
The director also announced that the shooting will begin soon. The film is touted to be a political thriller.
Sharing the link to the title teaser on Twitter, Lokesh wrote, “Dear Guru..This is our humble gift to you sir.. Wishing you a very happy birthday. Please do keep inspiring us always sir @ikamalhaasan”
The film’s teaser begins with a shot of a cabin in the woods. As Kamal is shown standing, facing a window, classical music plays in the background. The scene is interrupted as the whistle of a pressure cooker can then be heard, hinting towards a possible feast hosted by Kamal. As he lays down banana leaves on the table for his guests, the music turns ominous while he moves to hide some weapons at strategic points across the cabin. A few seconds later, a siren sound can be heard, suggesting that Kamal’s guests have arrived. As the guests arrived masked, each one is dressed up differently. While one wears a police uniform, another wears a white shirt with a shawl over his shoulder. All of them sit around the table, with Kamal in the middle, almost resembling The Last Supper. The camera pans down to show axes taped to the bottom of the table. Looking at his guests, Kamal asks, “Shall we begin?” before grabbing the axe and throwing it. The words, “Once upon a time, there lived a ghost named,” appear before the title Vikram appears.
The film will be bankrolled under Kamal’s banner Raajkamal Films International. Although the film’s entire crew has not yet been announced, Anirudh Ravichanderwill be composing the music.
Kanagaraj’s Vikram shares the title name with Kamal’s 1986 movie, Vikram, which he produced, scripted, and starred in. In the 1986 film, Kamal played the role of Commander AK Vikram, a RAW agent. The film was considered a hit at the Box Office even though it did not fare well among critics.
Actor Shraddha Srinath, who has predominantly worked in Tamil, Telugu, and Kannada films, made her acting debut with the 2015 Malayalam film Kohinoor. After five years, she is set to make a comeback to the Malayalam film industry with a yet-to-be-titled project, directed by B Unnikrishnan and co-starring Mohanlal.
The actor said that she has always been a fan of Malayalam films. “I have actually been very vocal about how much I have wanted to work in Malayalam films because I feel like they do make the best films. I absolutely enjoy watching Malayalam films and I was always waiting to re-enter the industry. It wasn’t that I was busy or not feeling interested enough,” she said.
“My debut did happen in 2015 but it was not the lead character and in Indian cinema, the minute you are given not the main character it’s like you are not flooded with offers. So yeah, I debuted and I had a small part to play and it was not the heroine role so accordingly there were barely any films that I was receiving after. After I made a name for myself in Tamil and Kannada industries, I did receive a few films but nothing that really caught my fancy,” the actor said.
Talking about her upcoming film alongside Mohanlal, Shraddha said that it was not something that she can miss out on. “You don’t miss an opportunity to work with someone like Mohanlal.”
“To begin with I was told that Unnikrishnan, who is like one of the most celebrated directors in Kerala, is directing a film and there is Mohanlal sir in the lead, it already sounded really exciting. So I was already quite excited at the outset and then I was given a narration by Unni Sir himself and it sounded really interesting. It’s a more commercial film and it’s a space that I have not really explored. I mean it has all the thrills and it has all the sort of kicks that you know Mohanlal fans love. It has got all of that. The character is not like a privileged one. She is an IAS officer. Neither is the movie a privileged one. You can imagine sitting in a first day first show in a theatre in a Mohanlal film and then you have all these, just the things the fans like and just the kind of applause and whistles. For me, it was just the thrill of being a part of a Mohanlal film and an interesting part to play. She is an IAS officer and she is a very upright kind of a person. It was everything really. It was the genre, it was a space that I had not explored, its more of a commercial kind of a film. And there were all these amazing names and my character was a very interesting role to play,” Shraddha said.
Apart from this, the actor also has Tamil horror-thriller film Kaliyugamin the pipeline.
“The film is set in 2050, which should give you an idea of what the character should be like. The society will not be the way we see it now, it will be a lot harder and a lot more complicated and some of the things that we take for granted now will be scarce then. It is a dark kind of a vision of the future and my character is someone who is adapting to that kind of a life. We will start filming in January. I am still prepping for it. The preparation is just physical and a few movies for references that I can watch,” she said.
Directed by Pramod Sundar, the film will be produced by KS Ramakrishna of Prime Cinemas under the RK International banner. Shraddha also has an upcoming Kannada film Godhra, the shooting for which is currently going on.
Besides, she also has an upcoming OTT release co-starring R Madhavan, titled Maara. Talking about her character, the actor told Silverscreen India that the detailing is exceptional. “I have thoroughly enjoyed shooting for the film,” she added.
Maara will premiere on Amazon Prime Video on December 17.
Actor Johnny Depp announced late on Friday night that he has stepped down from the role of Grindelwald in the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (a spin-off Harry Potter) film franchise.
The move comes in the wake of Depp losing a libel case against UK tabloid The Sun which tagged him as ‘wife-beater’ in a 2018 article. Since then, social media has been trending #Justicefor JohnnyDepp, in support of the actor.
On Friday, Depp released a statement, announcing his exit from the film, after Warner Bros had asked him to resign. He also added that he will soon file an appeal to challenge the court’s judgement. His statement also said:
“In the light of recent event’s, I would like to make the following short statement. Firstly, I’d like to thank everybody who has gifted me with their support and loyalty. I have been humbled and moved by your many messages of love and concern, particularly over the last few days. Secondly, I wish to let you know that I have been asked to resign by Warner Bros. from my role as Grindelwald in Fantastic Beasts and I have respected and agreed to that request. Finally, I wish to say this. The surreal judgement of the court in the UK will not change my fight to tell the truth and I confirm that I plan to appeal. My resolve remains strong and I intend to prove that the allegations against me are false. My life and career will not be defined by this moment in time. Thank you for reading.”
The Pirates of the Caribbean star’s association with Warner Bros was shrouded ever since the initial announcement that Depp will be playing the role of Grindelwald in the five-part franchise that came in nearly five months after the actor was publicly accused of domestic violence.
On Monday, judge Justice Andrew Nicol passed the verdict that the allegations made by Depp’s wife Amber Heard were ‘substantially true’. According to a report by Deadline, “The 129-page court document concludes plainly that Mr Depp did assault Ms Heard in reference to the multiple allegations of domestic violence that were presented during the trial, declaring that the “great majority” had been proved. The verdict also notes that it does not accept the characterization of Heard as a gold-digger.”
After the hearing, the UK court ruled out Depp’s libel case against The Sun, saying that the publisher was justified in using the term ‘wife-beater’ in its 2018 article.
This is not the first time the Harry Potter franchise is stirring controversies. In June, Warner Bros was called out for sticking by the side of the author JK Rowling when she faced backlash by fans across the world for promoting transphobia.
Recently, the production of the third installment from the Fantastic Beasts series resumed and is set to release in 2022.
Actor Silambarasan wrapped up the shooting of his upcoming film Eeswaran, directed by Susienthiran, on Friday, and announced that the film’s teaser will be released on Diwali.
Sharing the news on Twitter, the actor wrote, “#ShootCompleted #EeswaranTeaserForDiwali I heart fully thank each and everyone of my team #Eeswaran for this beautiful journey! & Special thanks to all my fans for all the love and support #SilambarasanTR #Atman #STR”.
Recently, the makers of the film ran into trouble with the forest department after a video of Simbu holding a snake went viral and a Chennai-based activist filed a complaint with the Tamil Nadu forest department officials, earlier this week.
Talking to Silverscreen India, forest range officer Clement Edison said that under the Wildlife Protection Act 1972, they cannot handle snakes. “If they want to handle snakes then they should have sought permission from the head of the department. Even if they did receive permission to handle snakes, there is no permission allowed for shooting,” he said.
Responding to the issue, the filmmakers issued a statement on Friday claiming that the snake was fake. “Truly we shot the scene using a fake plastic snake. That was made to seem like a real snake in the movie using graphics. The news and stills about this scene has not been made public with the permission of the production team. This video was taken when we were using computer graphics and got leaked some people. From our side we are investigating as to how this video got leaked,” the statement read.
The statement added, “Based on a complaint filed by an activist, forest range officer Clement Edison has called us for an enquiry. We have completely complied with the enquiry and we have given an explanation from our side. We have also informed them that we will provide the necessary evidence soon. The shooting for the movie is being carried out in accordance to the guidelines provided by the Tamil Nadu government,”
The first look of Eeswaran was released last week, featuring Simbu standing in a field with a snake around his neck.
The film is bankrolled under Madhav Media and D Company banners headed by Balaji Kapa and KV Durai respectively. S Thaman will be composing the music for the film and Thirunavukarasu will be handling the cinematography.
Film producer and actor Udhayanidhi Stalin started to shoot for his next yet-to-be-titled film, directed by Magizh Thirumeni (who has also directed Thadam), on Friday.
Produced under Udhayanidhi’s home banner Red Giant Movies, Arrol Corelli will be composing the music and Madhan Karky will be the lyricist. While NB Srikanth has been roped in to take care of the editing, Dhill Raj is in charge of the cinematography.
The film is touted to be a crime action thriller and reportedly, the makers are planning to complete the shoot by the year-end. The rest of the cast will be announced soon.
In August, Udhayanidhi announced that he will be playing the lead role in the Tamil remake of the Hindi film Article 15 which will be directed by Arunraja Kamaraj (who has also directed Kanaa) and produced by Zee Studios in association with Boney Kapoor’s Bayview Projects LLP. The actor-politician also has Kannai Nambadhey, which is helmed by director Mu Maran.
Meanwhile, Agerwal also has a slew of films in Telugu, Tamil and Kannada lined up. She is set to feature in a yet-to-be-titled film opposite Mahesh Babu’s nephew Ashok Galla, who will be making his debut in the Telugu film industry. She will also star in the upcoming Tamil film Eeswaran, directed by Susienthiran and starring Silambarasan.
The film is bankrolled under Madhav Media and D Company banners which are headed by Balaji Kapa and KV Durai respectively. S Thaman will be composing the music for the film while, Thirunavukarasu will be handling the cinematography. On Friday, the Eeswaran team wrapped up the shooting and it has been revealed that the teaser will be released on Diwali.
Agerwal will be making her Tamil debut with Jayam Ravi’s Bhoomi. The film is currently in its post-production stages.
Sacha Baron Cohen returned as Borat 14 years after the first film showed the ugly face of America and tapped into the pop culture market by making phrases such as wawaweewa and jagshemash famous. But this time around, that’s not all that Borat does in his new film.
Borat Subsequent Moviefilm is not about subtlety either. In moments where we see a baker writing “Jews Will Not Replace Us” on a cake, a shop owner high-fiving Borat when he jokes about the number of Mexican children outgoing US President Donald Trump could fit in a cage, to a tanning salon employee readily answering the question “What colour is best for racist family?”, Borat uncovers the bigotry in a flat-out manner. Borat 2 will go down in history as one of the most talked-about films of the 21st century, undoubtedly.
When the trailer released, we got a hint that the film focuses on Borat and his daughter Tutar (Maria Bakalova). The film’s release reportedly cost Amazon Prime Video a whopping $80 million. But it was not in vain. Amazon Prime Video announced that the movie, which released on October 23, was streamed by millions of viewers during its first weekend, which, if calculated against other streaming platform releases, even surpassed Disney’s Mulan.
Deadline reported that Cohen wanted to get the film released before the US presidential election. And it could be because the mockumentary has several politics-inducing scenes, including one in which Cohen bursts into a CPAC meeting featuring Vice President Michael Pence wearing a Donald Trump mask carrying Tutar on his shoulders. The decision by Cohen and Amazon Prime Video worked out with the audience, who went gaga over the film. So it made complete sense when Amazon Prime Video decided to go all out in their marketing strategies and sent a number of 40-foot semi-naked Borat inflatables down rivers in major cities.
But a film with such strong political statements undoubtedly faced several criticisms ever since it premiered.
The list of controversies starts with all the famous names who were included in the mockumentary but had no clue they were a set-up for Cohen’s next. The one that made several headlines was Rudy Giuliani, former New York city mayor and attorney to outgoing President Trump, who was questioned about his behaviour.
In the film, we see footage from hidden cameras planted in a hotel bedroom showing Giuliani lying down on the bed with his hand in his pants while staring at Bakalova. At this moment we see Borat, dressed in lingerie, run inside the room claiming Tutar is only 15-years-old and too old for Giuliani.
Reacting to this scene in the film, Giuliani took to Twitter and said it was “complete fabrication”.
(1) The Borat video is a complete fabrication. I was tucking in my shirt after taking off the recording equipment.
At no time before, during, or after the interview was I ever inappropriate. If Sacha Baron Cohen implies otherwise he is a stone-cold liar.
Cohen, on the other hand, suggested people should watch the movie and judge for themselves.
Cohen’s character didn’t shy away from politics in this film. For example, we see in a scene, Borat disguised as President Trump barging in while Pence is giving a speech at CPAC, carrying a girl on his shoulders. When reporters asked Trump whether the scene might tarnish his image during elections, he said:“I don’t know what happened. But years ago, you know, he (Cohen) tried to scam me and I was the only one who said no way. That’s a phony guy and I don’t find him funny.”
“To me, he’s a creep,” Trump had said. Cohen replied and called him a “racist buffoon”.
Donald—I appreciate the free publicity for Borat! I admit, I don’t find you funny either. But yet the whole world laughs at you.
I’m always looking for people to play racist buffoons, and you’ll need a job after Jan. 20. Let’s talk!https://t.co/itWnhJ8TQF
But, Trump was not the only one lashing out at Cohen, though. The daughter of Holocaust survivor Judith Dim Evans filed a lawsuit against Amazon Prime Video, alleging that her mother was tricked into appearing in Borat Subsequent Moviefilm. Evans is seen in a pivotal scene where she educates Borat about the Holocaust. In the scene, Borat, who is seen wearing an antisemitic costume, tells Evans that Facebook “taught” Tutar that the Holocaust did not exist.
Evans then educates him that the Holocaust did in fact exist. She ends the conversation by saying, “We are normal, exactly like you. Let’s make love, not war.”
Evans’ daughter Michelle Dim St. Pierre filed the lawsuit before the film’s release, asking for the scenes including her mother be removed and damages be paid for fraud and invasion of privacy. However, the lawsuit was dismissed and she eventually withdrew her plea. Cohen even went on to dedicate the movie to Evans, who died before its release.
Amidst all this, probably the most horrifying experience for Cohen was when he narrowly escaped a right-wing rally and hid in an ambulance.
The actor shared a video that shows him posing as a character called Country Steve during a rally in Washington. The video shows Country Steve singing a song about the Covid-19 pandemic, called the Wuhan Flu. As he sings the lyrics of the song, which include “Obama, what we gonna do? Inject him with the Wuhan flu.” Upon realising that the character wasn’t real, a crowd stormed the stage with guns and Cohen ran for his life. Posting the video he wrote, “This was not the easiest movie to make.”
But the most recent controversy the film is facing concerns the semi nude posters of Cohen dressed in nothing but a mask. A report in The Times states that the poster has offended many French Muslims as Cohen appears almost naked, wearing a ring engraved with the Arabic word Allah.
The regional transportation group TICE took down the posters following huge uproar, where people called the posters “provocative, insulting and disrespectful” towards the Muslim religion, reported Variety.
Despite all this, Borat 2 will reportedly secure a place in the Oscars. The film, as a whole, talks about the failures of the Trump government and shows who and what America is.
Even the tourism board of Kazakhstan took advantage of the film’s massive following. Interestingly, the first film was banned in Kazakhstan because of some dialogues. The makers, too, had to face several lawsuits.
While most of the people in the country didn’t appreciate the film, this year, the tourism board launched four promotional videos for potential tourists by using the slogan “Very Nice!” which is used by Cohen as Borat. The video has been currently viewed more than 870,000 times on YouTube.
Deadlinereported that the tourism board is now speaking with Amazon Prime Video to create further noise around promotional materials of the film.
In fact, the film’s popularity reached such heights that fans raised more than $100,000 for the babysitter in the film, who was loved for her moral compass. Jeanise Jones, 62, had no idea she was a part of the film’s franchise until she saw the trailer of Borat 2. She is seen passionately teaching Tutar about women’s rights and equality. After the film released. Jones’ pastor set up a GoFundMe page to raise money for the woman, who he said has been unemployed due to the ongoing pandemic. Currently, the donations have exceeded $176,700. Reportedly, Cohen also donated over $100,000 to Jeanise Jones’ Oklahoma City community.
Borat Subsequent Moviefilm is streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
The upcoming Malayalam film Drishyam 2starring Mohanlal and Meena wrapped up the shooting on Friday, 10 days earlier than scheduled, director Jeethu Joseph announced.
Posting group photos from the sets of the film, on social media, the director wrote, “The shoot of Drishyam 2 has officially ended today. The film, which was scheduled for 56 days, has been completed in 46 days. It was only with the sincere cooperation of producer Antony Perumbavoor and the entire Drishyam team that we were able to complete this shoot without any problems in this Covid crisis. My sincere thanks to them and each and every one of you who prayed for the success of this humble endeavor of ours.”
Drishyam 2 is a sequel to the 2013 thriller, also directed by Jeethu Joseph. Produced by Antony Perumbavoor, Drishyam 2 features the original cast members reprising their roles. In the prequel Drishyam, Mohanlal played Georgekutty, Meena essayed the role of his wife Rani, Ansiba Hassan featured as the elder daughter Anju and Esther Anil played the younger daughter Anu.
Bennet M Varghese, who works on the camera department of the film, also shared a picture of the cast members dressed in their roles to announce the wrap and captioned it as, “That’s a wrap.. #Drishyam2 Thank you so much @jeethu4ever @satheesh_kurup @mohanlal @lintajeethu @antonyperumbavoor @meenasagar16”
The film’s shooting took place in Thodupuzha region in the Idukki district of Kerala.
In October, the crew ran into trouble after the Panchayat members lodged a complaint against the crew for shooting in a protected area that comes under the Haritha Kerala Mission project in Kudayathur Panchayat in Idukki. The land was taken up for afforestation causes and was inaugurated by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan a few days prior to the incident. However, the issue resolved after Idukki district Collector H Dinesan permitted the crew to shoot under certain conditions.
Actor and model Milind Soman has been booked for promoting obscenity after he shared a photo of himself running nude on a Goa beach, according to an ANI report.
As per the report, Soman has been booked under the IPC Section 294 (Obscene acts and songs) and 67 (Punishment for publishing/transmitting obscene material in electronic form) of the IT Act for posting a nude picture of himself running on a Goa beach, to mark his 55th birthday, on the social media.
Superintendent of Police (South) Pankaj Kumar Singh told ANI that a case has been registered at Colva Police Station under Section 294 IPC and 67 IT Act against Soman.”An organisation called Goa Suraksha Manch had given a complaint against Soman for running nude on a beach in South Goa and then circulating those pictures on social media,” ANI quoted Singh.
This move comes a day after model-actor Poonam Pandey and husband Sam Bombay‘s arrest by the Goa Police sparked a gender debate on Twitter. Social media users called out the hypocrisy of the two separate incidents. While Pandey was arrested for shooting an ‘obscene’ video, Soman’s nude picture was well-received.
“#PoonamPandey & #MilindSoman both stripped down to their birthday suits in #Goa recently. Pandey partly, Soman completely. Pandey is in legal trouble–for obscenity. Soman is being lauded for his fit body at age 55. I guess we are kinder to our nude men than to our nude women,” wrote filmmaker Apurva Asrani on social media.
On Thursday evening, Poonam Pandey was arrested for shooting an ‘obscene video’ on October 31 and allegedly trespassing into government property. According to a report in The Times of India, the couple was granted bail by the judicial Magistrate, Canacona, at around 9.15 pm on Thursday. As per the conditions of the bail, the couple cannot leave Goa without the court’s permission and have to report to the police station for six days.
Singh told reporters on Thursday that Pandey was arrested for “trespassing into government land” at the Chapoli Dam area in Canacona town.
As actor Kamal Haasan turns 66 on Saturday, it is time for us to go through his works and accomplishments. An all-rounder, who started out as a child artist, Haasan has constantly proved his mettle in the field of arts. While acting is one field through which he has captured the hearts of his fans, Haasan has left a mark in every aspect of filmmaking, playing different roles, both onscreen and offscreen. Haasan has even gone beyond cinema and plunged into politics, starting his party Makkal Needhi Maiam in 2018. While there are many more feathers on the actor’s cap, here is a tribute to the multi-hyphenate perfectionist.
Silverscreen India compiles the actor’s dasavatharams (10 roles) that he played in the film industry.
Actor
Starting out as a child artist, Haasan’s name predominantly stands for his exemplary acting roles from over 230 movies he has starred in. He made his debut when he was six years old alongside Gemini Ganesh and Savithri in Kalathur Kannama in 1960. After veteran director, K Balachander took him under his wing, Haasan’s acting grew polished. It took variously uncredited and supporting roles before he was cast as the lead in the Malayalam film Kanyakumari (1974) for which he won his first Filmfare Award for the best actor. Known for going the extra mile to deliver his performances, he spent several months learning to play mridangam for his character in Apoorva Raagangal and learned ventriloquism for the film Avargal. It is also to be noted that the director of Avargal, K Balachander had advised Rajinikanth, who was making his acting debut in the film, to watch Haasan’s acting to improve his skill.
From a psychopathic serial killer in Sigappu Rojakkal, a blind violinist in Raaja Paarvai, a dwarf in Apoorva Sagodharargal,to a woman in Avvai Shanmugi, Haasan has nearly donned all the roles and experimented largely with his acting. Kamal also essayed 10 roles in one film, Dasavatharam.
Dancer
Hailing from a family who was into arts, Haasan learned dancing at a young age. At 12, after attending a Kuchipudi performance, his eagerness to learn the art brought him before MS Natarajan. In less than two years, Natarajan exclaimed that there was nothing more to teach Haasan as he had become exceptional in the art form and was ready for his arangetram.
After learning Bharatanatyam, Haasan went on to learn Kuchipudi and Kathak. After performing over 30 shows in Maharashtra, he met with an accident in the early 1970s and was told that he cannot dance anymore. While he did not lose hope, small gigs led him to learn further, including Kathakali and Foxtrot. One of his noted performances as a dancer was his role as Balu, an alcoholic dancer in the 1983 Telugu film Sagara Sangamam. His performance in Naadha Vinodhamu was also well received.
Playback singer
As a playback singer, Haasan has sung over 80 songs. He began taking classes from M Balamuralikrishna in the early 1980s. However, even before his classes, he sang his first song for the film Andharangam after the director heard him singing a keerthanai on the sets. As a singer, Haasan is known for hitting higher notes with ease which led him to render his voice to Ninaivo Oru Paravai from Sigappu Rojakkal. His song Pottu Vaitha Kadhal Thittam from Singaaravelan, is also known for its high pitched notes.
Screenwriter
Haasan has written for over 30 films. Credited as Haasan Brothers, Haasan along with his brothers wrote the screenplay for Guru, Meendum Kokila, and Raaja Paarvai. In an interview with film critic Baradwaj Rangan, he said that his screenwriting skills improved due to his association with fellow-screenwriter Ananthu. His film Hey Ram begins with a note thanking Ananthu, “Dear Ananthu Saab, Thank you for directing me towards this direction. – Kamal Haasan”
Having already established himself as a noted dancer, in due time, Haasan began to choreograph for films. Following his accident, he joined as an assistant choreographer to K Thangappan, who choreographed Chandralekha. Later, Haasan partnered with choreographer Raghuram for Avargal. He has also choreographed the song Unakenna Mele Ninraai from Simla Special.
Director
Haasan sat on the director’s chair for the first time in 1997 for Chachi 420, the Hindi remake of Tamil film Avvai Shanmugi, directed byKS Ravikumar. In 2000, he directed the bilingual historical drama Hey Ram, which was one of his seven films that were submitted by India to the Oscars. His other directorial projects include Virumaandi and Vishwaroopam 1 and Vishwaroopam 2.
Makeup artist
Haasan took up the role of a makeup artist for a day for his co-actor Trisha in the film Thoongavanam. In an episode of National Geographic’s show Mega Icons, he had revealed that he learned the art of makeup from Academy Award-winning make-up artist Michael Westmore for 30-40 days. He has also worked as Westmore’s assistant on the sets of the 1996 film Star Trek: First Contact.
Many have asked if I know @ikamalhaasan well here ya go 🙂 my dad used to create his makeups when I was a little girl. We keep in touch but the last I saw Kamal was a few years back. The 2nd photo is me and my dad in beautiful clothing given to us as a gift from Kamal ❤️ pic.twitter.com/BxN40imqCx

Producer
After experimenting with many behind-the-camera roles that cinema had to offer, Haasan turned into a producer when the Haasan brothers began producing films in the 1980s. The brothers’ first production was Raja Paarvai in 1981. He has produced Vikram, Hey Ram, Mumbai Xpress and Uttama Villain.
Lyricist
Haasan has penned lyrics for several songs in Tamil. His first song as a lyricist, Nee Partha Parvaikku Nandri from Hey Ram, was sung by Asha Bhosle and Hariharan. He has also penned the lyrics of Unna Vida from Virumaandi, and sung along with Shreya Ghoshal.
TV host
Taking a leap from the silver screen to the small screen, Haasan turned into a host for Bigg Boss, a reality show on Vijay TV. Since 2017, he has hosted three seasons and is currently hosting the fourth season too. During this time, he also launched his political party Makkal Needhi Maiam in 2018. Bigg Boss is one of the most watched shows in Tamil Nadu.
