EXCLUSIVE: Sanjay Dutt To Play Karthi’s Role In ‘Kaithi’ Hindi Remake

Karthi starrer Kaithi turned out to be one of the most critically acclaimed films of 2019. Helmed by Maanagaram fame Lokesh Kanagaraj, the film was bankrolled by SR Prakash Babu and SR Prabhu‘s Dream Warrior Pictures. The film is now being remade in Hindi and Reliance Entertainment will be associating with Dream Warrior Pictures for the first time to produce the film.

Kaithi is a film with no heroine, no songs and is a hundred percent action genre film. Despite all these odds, the film was released on Diwali and Kaithi turned out to be a box office blockbuster among the family audience down South. We’re delighted to join hands with Reliance Entertainment for the Bollywood remake. This high-octane film will surely entertain the audience pan-India,” said producer SR Prabhu.

Shibasish Sarkar, Group CEO, Reliance Entertainment seems to be excited about this association. “Kaithi is a gripping thriller and a tribute to all the celebrated cops-and-criminal actioners you can think of. And yet it is like none you’ve ever seen. I really look forward to this collaboration and coming together with a great creative team that would do true justice to the film’s Hindi remake,” he said.

While the makers are yet to announce the cast and crew of the remake, a source privy to the developments told Silverscreen that actor Sanjay Dutt has been roped in to reprise Karthi who played ‘Dilli’ in the original.

Kaithi is a non-commercial action-drama film that dealt with the challenges a released prisoner faces after unexpectedly encountering a policeman who has a duty to accomplish. Apart from the lead actor, the film also starred Narain, Vijay TV fame Dheena, Ramana, Baby Monica, Arjun Das, and Mariam George. Sathyan Sooryan has cranked camera, Philomin Raj has taken care of editing, Sam CS has composed music with Anbariv choreographing action sequences. The film is streaming on Hotstar.

Meanwhile, Lokesh Kanagaraj announced months ago that the team is planning for a sequel to Kaithi. A source told Silverscreen that the sequel will revolve around the flashback that Karthi narrates in the film, the script book of which was completed once Kaithi was wrapped up. The director will reportedly work on it after he completes Vijay starrer Master, according to the source.

Here Are The Four New Cast Members Of Venkat Prabhu-STR’s ‘Maanaadu’

Simbu starrer Maanaadu has finally taken shape over the last few weeks after several reports that the film was shelved. The political film’s producer V House Productions’ Suresh Kamatchi had taken to Twitter a few weeks back to announce the cast and crew of the film. Director-producer SA Chandrasekhar, actor-director Bharathiraja and actors Karunakaran and Premji have been roped in for crucial roles while Kalyani Priyadarshan co-stars alongside Simbu. The latest to join the crew are actors SJ Suryah, Daniel Annie Pope, YG Mahendran and Manoj K Bharathi.

In response to the announcement, the actors tweeted about being a part of the film.

Just yesterday, Venkat Prabhu, announced the name of Simbu’s character on the occasion of his birthday. He plays the role of ‘Abdul Khaaliq’ (meaning servant of the creator). Venkat Prabhu had earlier taken to Twitter to announce that fans and audiences could send in their name suggestions for the character Simbu would play in the film and that the best one would be picked. He also revealed that Simbu would essay a Muslim in the film.

We are yet to find out if it was a deliberate decision by the team to give the character, the film’s music director, Yuvan Shankar Raja’s Islamic name. The poster also had a quote by the character, “Dhairiyathai Vida Periya Achchuruthal, Yethiriku Edhuvum Illai” which translates to “There is nothing more intimidating than courage to your enemy”.

On the technical front, Richard M Nathan will handle the camera, Yuvan Shankar Raja will compose music, Praveen KL will be editing, Sekar will helm art, and Rajeevan will be in charge of production design. Vasuki Bhaskar will handle costumes and Stunt Silva will choreograph stunt sequences.

Meanwhile, Simbu will feature in UR Jameel’s Maha opposite Hansika Motwani, whose first look of which was recently revealed. Jameel mentioned that the actor would feature in the film for nearly an hour, refuting the news that he would play a small cameo in the film. He will also feature in the official remake of Kannada hit Mufti, directed by Narthan, co-starring Gautham Karthik.

He had also announced a trilingual Maghaa Maanaadu days after news broke out that he was dropped from Maanaadu. His father, actor-director T Rajendar told Silverscreen, “We are planning the film on a huge scale with a Rs 120 crore budget. It is an out-and-out entertainer like his previous films Manmadhan and Vallavan. It will release in Tamil, Hindi, and Telugu”.

He also added, “Direction is by Silambarasan TR and not by me, as some have speculated. The film will be produced by our company Chimbu Cine Arts, and will be a big project for us.” Since Maanadu is back on, Maghaa Maanadu is unlikely to happen.

Five Songs Sung By Simbu That We’re Listening To On His Birthday

Actor Silambarasan Thesingu Rajendar a.k.a Simbu is among the few Kollywood actors who can do more than just act. Right from direction to acting, singing and dancing, he has a niche and he sure also the knack of staying in the news, for wrong or right reasons. As the actor turns 37, here’s five songs rendered by him that we’re listening to on his birthday.

Loosu Penne Loosu Penne – Vallavan, 2006

STR and his love songs are a genre unto themselves. This viral number resonated with boys so well, when it first released. Oh, and he also turned lyricist with this one! Silambarasan’s Vallavan is a romantic drama that also starred Nayanthara, Sandhya, and Santhanam.

Love Anthem, 2011

A song about love yet again. This ‘anthem’, as it is referred to, speaks about love, love and well love in every language; it has a nice ring to it. It was composed by the actor himself for oneness and world peace. The latest version of the song, with Akon and the yet-to-feature female artist (Rihanna earlier), is yet to be released.

No Money No Honey – Vaanam, 2011

Here he is, on about how money is the ultimate authority. You find him conversing rather than singing with Andrea, his co-singer in this song. Krish‘s Vaanam is a hyperlink film that stars Simbu, Anushka Shetty, Bharath, Prakash Raj, Saranya Ponvannan, and Sonia Agarwal.

Love Panlaama Vendaama – Poda Podi, 2012

Our man is surprisingly contemplating falling in love in this catchy number. He’s all up for it but is also worried if it will leave his life in shambles. The ‘very good ma’ line that starts here is his signature line through the film. Vignesh Shivn’s Podaa Podi is a romantic drama that stars Simbu, Varalaxmi Sarathkumar, VTV Ganesh and Shobana.

Appan Mavanae Vaada – Poda Podi, 2012

All fathers would wish to be supportive yet protective of everything their son is up to. I can’t get over how Simbu’s voice moves from one pitch to the other gradually and perfectly. This too is from Podaa Podi.

Maayanadhi Movie Review: There Is Nothing New In This Tasteless Typical Love Story

Cast: ‘Aadukalam’ Naren, Abi Saravanan, Venba, Appu Kutty

Director: Ashok Thiagarajan

Music: Raja Bhavatharini

I think the universe heard the statement I made the previous time I saw a film, that I’d rather watch films with mainstream content instead of watching content that leaves me hanging, and gave me just what I deserved. A conventional, predictable, tiringly boring film named Maayanadhi. At a time when I’m already losing hope on this industry for the kind of films being churned out, this film adds to the angst, with a cliched love story that any Tom, Dick or Harry can narrate. It had nothing new, no single element of entertainment, ultimately turning out to be the film nobody asked for.

Kousalya (Venba) and her father Anbarasan (Aadukalam Naren) are inseparable and extremely fond of each other. He is found supporting her in every situation, giving her the freedom to do anything she pleases. Kousalya, who aspires to be a doctor in accordance with her father’s words, falls in love with an auto-driver Senthil (Abi Saravanan) who is well aware of the fact that he is out of her league in all aspects. On knowing that he wouldn’t be able to get her hand with the permission of her father, he threatens to kill himself and gets married to her secretly. A shattered and betrayed Anbarasan leaves his daughter, who loses out on her career.

There are no points in the narrative which keep you guessing nor keep the story moving. It was just a tastelessly flat plot that went on with purposeless scenes. Several characters disappeared half-way through. For instance, there’s a provisions store lady, an acid-attacker, a vengeful school teacher, who you think might take the story to a whole new level. But none of them hold even the slightest bit of value. Just when the provisions store lady seemed to be moving the plot a bit, she elopes with a random guy(!) The acid-attacker who appears at the crucial point, the interval block, changes for the better after he feels guilty for hurting his mother. And just commenting negatively about Kousalya is what the “vengeful” teacher is there for. They all seemed to be capable performers. What’s the purpose of competent casting in a film that strives to be bland?

The staging in the film is just unacceptably poor. I found myself guessing what would happen at the very beginning of the scene, and every scene played out just as I imagined.

To top it all, everyone’s found lecturing each other. Senthil’s father is lecturing Senthil, Anbarasan is lecturing everybody around him, Kousalya is lecturing her friends, and not to forget this one annoying auto-driver lecturing Mani (Appu Kutty), Senthil and their other friend. None of these woven into the plot but were forcefully thrown into the script, making me just wait for it to end.

Venba and Abi Saravanan are at ease on screen, but their characters don’t demand an extraordinary performance from them. ‘Aadukalam’ Naren and Appu Kutty are their usual selves. The camera work was great until this one song close to the climax popped up. It had ever colour in the colour scheme with spots of yellow light everywhere, something an amateur working on photoshop would present. Raja Bhavatharini’s background scores and songs are the only saving grace in this mess.

Pa Ranjith To Produce A Film Based On Perumal Murugan’s Short Story; Murugan Will Pen Dialogues

At the Mathrubhumi International Festival, yesterday during the launch of his new book, Amma (translated from his Tamil work titled Thondra Thunai), author Perumal Murugan revealed that a work of his will find its way to the big screen very soon.

Murugan was answering a question in the session on his love for cinema. In the memoir, which is about his mother, he writes about running away from home as a young boy to work in the movies. “I wanted to write lyrics,” he said at the session, laughing.

The author also revealed that over the years, several filmmakers have expressed interest in his work. In fact, Balu Mahendra met him once and offered to turn his novel into a film but the filmmaker soon got busy with a Kannada movie and Murugan never heard back from him.

However, one of Murugan’s short stories will soon be made into a film. “The film is being produced by Pa Ranjith and the director’s name is Karthik. It is based on my short story and I have penned the dialogues,” Murugan said amid applause.

More details about the project are awaited.

Anveshanam Review: A Clumsily Set Up Drama Partly Redeemed By Jayasurya’s Performance

Cast: Jayasuirya, Sruthi Ramachandran

Director: Prasobh Vijayan

Anveshanam, Prasobh Vijayan’s sophomore feature film, is designed like a whodunit murder mystery. A child, a boy of around ten years, dies from a head injury. In the few night hours that follow his death, his parents (Jayasurya and Sruthi Ramachandran) have come under the police radar.

At regular intervals, the screen turns into a digital clock that marks the time of different incidents that preceded and followed the tragedy. As the cops starts to grill the parents, who look distraught and seemingly incapable of committing a crime of such brutality, the film poses to the audience a complex moral and ethical riddle.

Only Anveshanam isn’t a whodunit. There is a wide gap between what it poses to be ﹣a conventional crime drama ﹣ and what it really is ﹣ an emotionally heavy drama that argues against the objective thinking that forms the basis of police investigations.

The film begins well. An image of the incident that led to the child’s death is flashed to the audience, like a clue to solve the riddle. A lullaby-like song that introduces his family ﹣His father, Aravindan, the creative-head at an television channel, his mother, Kavitha, his little sister, and a fish tank that they lovingly make from scratch to adorn their living room. Prasobh creates an intimate portrait of the household without pushing too much. Everything looks naturally warm.

When the tragedy tears this perfectly normal family apart and the police’s interrogation starts to breach the boundaries of its ‘middle-class identity’ (questions are posed on topics such as a history of abuse and extramarital affairs), the couple feel morally shaken.

One of the emotions spread out in the film’s air is a sense of disbelief ﹣ as though it wants to ask, “How could anyone think this couple could harm their child?” Dr. Gautham (Vijay Babu) repeats to his colleagues and the police that Aravindan and Kavitha are “nice people” who will never commit a crime.

A lullaby runs throughout the film to emphasize on this point. The one character who smells something fishy in the child’s death comes from a contrasting background, with a past of parental abuse.

The film holds culpable the blind law and order system, the media that likes to turn incidents of tragedy into sensational news pieces and trespass into the private lives of ordinary people, and the society’s innate sadistic tendency. But its protagonists never come to a point where they have to reevaluate their actions or introspect.

By taking this self-righteous and thereby shallow position, the film limits itself to being a mawkish unintelligent drama. The investigation part leaves a bad taste in your mouth, primarily because there isn’t enough content to keep it going.

The cops have not strong evidence enough to frame the couple. Thanks to poor writing, the interrogation sequences aren’t slightly intriguing. Unlike Drishyam, here is no tightly set-up plot where the protagonists have to outwit the police and come out unhurt.

And this isn’t a Kuttram Kadithal that delves deep into the question of crime and retribution through the story of a primary school teacher whose seemingly simple act of corporal punishment snowballs into a fatal tragedy that urges her and the audience to see children in a different light.

In Anveshanam, the probe never goes so deep to explore the nuances of the life that children lead in an adult’s world. The weak point where the film culminates almost equates children to pets that the adults own and rear.

The film’s treatment of its child characters is especially important because one of the scenes from the film is, accidentally or by design, reminiscent of an image from the recent public memory, connected to the brutal murder of a child in the hands of his stepfather. Prasobh uses this incident to influence the viewer’s sense of judgment, and then accuse them of prejudice.

The probing team comprises three cops – the chief, a lady officer, an old constable and a young assistant. Vijayan adds a detail here, like a hat-tip to his low-profile directorial debut, Lilly – the lady officer is heavily pregnant. At first, it makes for a curious spectacle. Her cautious but strictly formal body language, and how her colleagues and the men she meets make it a point to ask about her well being.

As the film proceeds, however, this physical trait starts to look like a set-up. You see that her pregnancy is repeatedly used as a yardstick to measure her moral compass. “A parent cannot hurt his child. You’ll know that soon,” says Aravindan during the interrogation. The film’s statement of forgiveness and second chance is also linked to her pregnancy.

The tight, handheld shots (cinematography by Sujith Vasudev) gives the film a claustrophobic chamber drama touch. Anveshanam’s strong point is, however, in the lead actors’ performances. Jayasurya gets ample space to perform, and the actor is excellent as the grieving father who is pushed to the wall. He brilliantly underplays in the scenes of breakdown, becoming a foil to Sruthi Ramachandran’s performance as an overwrought mother.

Sruthi proves to be an excellent artiste, endowed with an expressive face that makes for great close-ups. Leona Lishoy as the chief police officer is an unusual, but impressive casting choice. Lishoy’s soft eyes and voice well hide the tough inner personality of the cop.

Anveshanam is an interesting attempt at looking at the different layers of grief one passes through when a dear one passes away. The sadness, anger, and disbelief, everything that culminates in a point where returning to senses and life becomes the only option.

Jayasurya’s portrayal of the bottomless grief of the father who lost his son, to an extent, is powerful enough to cover up many blotches in the narrative because unlike the moral question at the heart of the film, grief is universally relatable.

The Anveshanam review is a Silverscreen original article. It was not paid for or commissioned by anyone associated with the film. Silverscreen.in and its writers do not have any commercial relationship with movies that are reviewed on the site.

Sasikumar-Samuthirakani’s ‘Nadodigal 2’ Finally Hits Screens Today

The long-delayed Sasikumar starrer Nadodigal 2 helmed by actor-director Samuthirkani has finally hit screens today starting with afternoon shows. After several postponements last year, it was to finally release on Friday, the 31st of January but didn’t manage to once again owing to financial issues.

According to the petition filed against the film’s release by Praveen Kumar in the Madras high court, the producer of the film, Madras Enterprises’ S Nanthagopal is believed to have sold the Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry distribution rights to Praveen Kumar of FM Finances for a lumpsum of five crores and twenty-five lakhs. The distributor has, in turn, agreed to pay him an advance of three crores and fifty lakh while agreeing to settle the balance amount pretty soon. Meanwhile, producer Nanthagopal had sold the distribution rights to another company, Linda Big Pictures namely.

In response to this, the Madras high court had issued a stay order on the film’s release and asked for FM Finances to settle the balance amount of one crore seventy-five lakhs to producer Nanthagopal. To avoid further delay in the release of the film, Nanthagopal filed an urgent case against the stay order issued. On Friday, his lawyer Raghavachaari agreed to settle half of the amount procured from FM Finances immediately and requested the withdrawal of the stay order. Justice PT Asha, the judge for the case, complied with his request and withdrew the stay order issued against Nadodigal 2.

While the film was expected to hit the screens on Friday night, according to the tweets by actor Sasikumar and the production house, Madras Enterprises, shows for the film opened only today, on Saturday, in the afternoon.

Nadodigal 2 stars Sasikumar, Bharani, Anjali, Athulya Ravi in the lead roles with Gnanasambandam, Namo Narayana, Tulasi, Sri Ranjani in supporting roles. Justin Prabhakaran is composing music, NK Ekambaram is handling the camera, AL Ramesh is on the edit and Jacki is helming art. Stunt Silva is choreographing the action sequences. The film is the sequel to the super-hit 2009 drama-thriller Nadodigal that spoke of friendship and love. It has been certified U/A.

‘Thappad’ In The Time Of Kabir Singh; Taapsee Pannu Starrer Looks Promising

There’s a dialogue in Thappad’s trailer that has even non filmy types making a connection. That line (about people in love hitting each other) is eerily similar to something Sandeep Vanga Reddy, director of Arjun Reddy and Kabir Singh said in a bid to ‘justify’ the actions of his protagonists.

In complete contrast with the ‘Thappad se dar nahin lagta saheb, pyar see lagta hai”, brand of cinema, Taapsee starrer Thappad is about a woman who says enough at the first strike.

Among our most favourite things to do when a film trailer like this releases is read Youtube comments. Almost all comments that express worries about families breaking, about why movies about women “misusing laws” (as if men are saints and do not misuse any law at every chance, in all walks of life) are not made, asking women to not marry men if they don’t want to be hit (yeah), are all courtesy men. To be fair, several men have also commented in praise of the film’s subject. But the difference in women’s comments is telling. There is a deep sense of empathy with Taapsee’s character among them. Many doff their hats to Taapsee for playing a woman who will shake the system down for one slap, even when her trauma is trivialised as, “Just one slap?”

An Aggressive Ritika, ‘Helpless’ Ashok Feature In The Trailer Of ‘Oh My Kadavule’: Out Now

The trailer of Ashok SelvanRitika Singh starrer Oh My Kadavule is out now. Helmed by debut director Ashwath Marimuthu, the film is being jointly bankrolled by G Dilli Babu under his Axess Film Factory banner and Abinaya Selvam and Ashok Selvan under the Happy High Pictures banner.

Anu (Ritika Singh) is childish, possessive, aggressive and the wife of Arjun (Ashok Selvan), the last being a hasty decision that Arjun is unhappy about. Much like in the teaser, he isn’t able to accept a mere friend as his wife but seems to be interested in his college ‘Akka’ Meera (Vani Bhojan) who enters his life out of nowhere. He is found narrating all of this to Vijay Sethupathi and Ramesh Thilak who decide to offer him a ‘golden ticket’, something that is capable of changing his life the way he wants. Once he gets hold of the ticket, we witness Anu in an engagement with another groom, Arjun almost being killed by a lorry… Supposedly a director in the film, Gautham Vasudev Menon is found commencing the teaser with the word ‘Action’.

Actor Suriya took to Twitter to release the trailer.

Apart from the lead trio and extended cameo duo, the romantic fantasy drama also stars Sha Ra as Mani, MS Bhaskar, Gajaraj, and others in important roles. Oh My Kadavule has Leon James composing music, Vidhu Ayyanna handling the camera, Ramalingam on art and Boopathi Selvaraj on the editing table. Dinesh Manoharan is handling costumes and Ramkumar is choreographing stunts.

“We do digital marketing and promote films. One day, Ashwath (the director) came for something else and narrated the one-liner. I really liked it and thought why don’t we do it?,” said co-producer Abinaya Selvam to Silverscreen who is also the co-founder of Uptown Ideas, the digital marketer for the film.

“I was looking to do something different and it was just a decision taken on the spur of the moment… I think it was the story. We’ve been working on the script for a year now and we went to the Axess Film Factory (it previously did Raatchasan). The team there loved it and decided to bankroll this,” adds Abinaya.

Four songs – ‘Friendship Anthem’, ‘Haiyoo Haiyoo’, ‘Kadhaipoma’ and, ‘Enada Life Idhu’ from the album have been released by the makers. Recently, it was announced that the theatrical rights of the film have been acquired by Sakthivelan B’s Sakthi Film Factory. The film has also been certified U/A.

The film, which wrapped up shoot last year at the end of October, is slated for release on Valentine’s Day, 2020.

Nayanthara Joins The Cast Of Director Siva’s ‘Thalaivar 168’

After a long gap, the Thalaivar 168 team has made an announcement regarding another cast member of the film. To everyone’s surprise, Nayanthara, who was last seen with actor Rajinikanth in his previous film Darbar, has been roped in for this film too. This marks the fourth association of the two after Chandramukhi, Kuselan, and Darbar. Helmed by director Siva, Thalaivar 168 will be bankrolled by Kalanithi Maran under his Sun Pictures banner.

The team took to Twitter to announce the news.

The puja of Thalaivar 168 took place on December 11, 2019, and shooting of the same commenced at the end of the month.

After several names like Aishwarya RaiSai PallaviJyothika and Manju Warrier, to name a few, did the rounds for the heroine for Thalaivar 168, it was finally revealed that National Award-winning actress Keerthy Suresh will work in the film. The actress who was last seen in Vijay starrer Sarkar is associating with the superstar for the first time. The team congratulated and celebrated the actor for the National Award on the sets of Thalaivar 168.

It was also announced that actors Prakash Raj, Soori, Meena, and Khushbu are part of the project. While Soori will be working with Rajinikanth for the first time, Prakash Raj was last seen with the actor as IG Subramaniam in Padayappa (1999), Meena as Ranganayaki in Muthu (1995), and Khushbu as Rekha in Pandiyan (1992).

“Working with Superstar Rajinikanth in this film produced by Sun Pictures is a dream come true for an actor like me. A mere selfie with the actor would in itself bring one happiness and knowing that I get to play a role with the star in a film makes me feel elated. Director Siva who is an expert with commercial subjects is helming this film which makes it all the more special. I’m excited to be a part of this crew,” said actor Soori.

Meena said, “This is the first time I’ll be associating with Sun Pictures and director Siva, but a reunion of sorts with Rajini sir for which I’m really excited. The story has been penned really well and I play a jovial character in the film which the audience is bound to love. Eagerly looking forward to the shoot of Thalaivar 168.”

“I have kept away from Tamil films for about nine years with the sole reason to feature in a good film, and Thalaivar 168 is one such film. I have worked with Rajini sir in several films and I am extremely happy and excited to work with him again. The audience has always accepted us as a good on-screen pair and I hope they do so in this film too. It will be a different character compared to my earlier films,” said Khushbu.

The film will have music composed by D Imman. The makers are yet to make an official announcement regarding other technicians.

Meanwhile, Rajinikanth’s Darbar has entered the fourth week since release. Helmed by director AR Murugadoss, the film featured the actor as a cop ‘Aaditya Arunasalam’, long after his 1992 action-drama Pandian.
