KJR Studios Confirms That Sivakarthikeyan Starrer ‘Hero’ Will Release As Planned

Speculations that the Sivakarthikeyan starrer Hero will not be hitting the screens as scheduled were suddenly widespread on social media. Rumour was that the Madras High Court had issued a stay order on the release of the film and that the production house of Hero, KJR Studios, had to pay a sum of ten crores as debt. Now, the company has refuted the rumours and confirmed that the film will hit screens as planned on 20 December, 2019.

TSR Films Private Limited had reportedly given a loan of ten crores to RD Raja of 24 AM Studios who is claimed to have utilised the funds for the Sivakarthikeyan starrer and later entrusted the project to KJR Studios according to Cleatuss Fredrick Henry, TSR Films representative. But KJR Studios has confirmed that no other production house other than itself was involved in the film right from scratch and that the allegations are only an attempt to tarnish the reputation of the production house. A representative also told the press that action would be taken on TSR Films for the same.

KJR Studios took to Twitter to release a statement regarding the issue.

The film was earlier embroiled in a controversy over the title Hero between Tribal Arts and KJR Studios with each claiming they had rights over it (the other movie with the same title is a sports film starring Vijay Deverakonda).

Helmed by Irumbuthirai fame PS Mithran, Hero will see debutant Kalyani Priyadarshan paired opposite Sivakarthikeyan, along with Naachiyaar fame Ivana, Arjun Sarja and Abhay Deol in important roles. The Yuvan Shankar Raja musical has George C Williams handling cinematography and Ruben on edit.

Millennial Nostalgia: Five Movies To Stream This Children’s Day

No matter how old you are there is always a child inside, right? The voice that keeps reminding you to take life easy and be silly at times. Here’s a list of my favourite films, this Children’s Day, for the child in me and you. Happy Children’s Day!

Jumanji, 1995

This film is a part of every 90’s kid’s growing up years. Two children face hurdles while attempting to save a man trapped inside a surreal boardgame. The brilliant special effects and the perfect dose of spills and thrills makes the movie a personal favourite even today. Starring Robin Williams, Jonathan Hyde, Kirsten Dunst, the film is streaming on Amazon Prime.

The Incredibles, 2004

This amazing family with superhero powers left me in awe back when it first released. It ticked all the boxes for a family entertainer — humour, love, action… It stars Craig T Nelson, Samuel L Jackson, and Holly Hunter and is streaming on Youtube.

Taare Zameen Par, 2007

Another movie that was an integral part of my childhood. A boy with dyslexia discovers his hidden talents with the help of his teacher… what a dream, especially because of the way our schools beat all creativity out of us right off the bat. I cannot forget the craze for that ‘Bum Bum Bole’ classroom song and the iconic ‘step’. Starring Aamir Khan and Darsheel Safary, the film is streaming on Netflix.

My Friend Ganesha, 2007

Despite the poor special effects and visuals, this film did make me squeal when it hit screens. It made my younger self strongly believe that Ganesha was and will always be a friend to everyone who yearns for one. If you were raised on a strong dose of Pogo TV like I was, there’s no way you could’ve missed this film.

Wall-E, 2008

A movie way ahead of its time that spoke of the environmental crisis we face now more than ever. The film is about a robot couple who strive to bring the earth back to its normal state. Adorable characters aided by a cutesy, hilarious, yet strong plot make this the evergreen movie it is. The love forged between Wall-E and Eva was a delight. Wall-E is streaming on Hotstar.

Suraj Venjaramoodu On ‘Android Kunjappan Ver 5.25’: “I’ve Made People Laugh, I’ve Tested Their Patience Too”

It takes multiple phone calls and some coaxing to get Suraj Venjaramoodu to give me an interview. The actor has currently taken time out of shooting schedules to visit cinemas playing Android Kunjappan Ver 5.25, his latest movie, directed by Ratheesh Balakrishnan. The film is a fascinating genre-bending comedy centred on a septuagenerian’s relationship with a robot.

“I love visiting theatres. I love the laughter, cheers and the sheer energy of a crowd inside a packed hall. May be it comes from my background as a stage artiste. I visited Vanitha theatre in Edapally, and Kavitha. You know how great is the crowd in Kavitha?” asks Suraj, on his way to another movie hall in Kochi.

The actor, 43, is passing through the brightest phase in his career. In the last three months, he’s delivered spectacular performances in three movies, coincidentally all directed by first-time filmmakers, in roles of diverse nature. In PR Arun’s Finals, released on September 6, he was Varghese, an athletics coach and the father of a cycling prodigy played by Rajisha Vijayan. In Emcy Joseph’s Vikruthi, released a month later, the actor played a real life character Eldho, a mute man who falls victim to a cyber crime.

Eldho and Bhaskara Poduval, the cantankerous lonely old man in Android Kunjappan, are unlike any characters Suraj has played in his career spanning over 13 years. Until 2014, when he won a national award for the best actor for Bijukumar Damodaran’s Perariyathavar, Suraj was exclusively a comedian, making his presence felt in inconsequential potboilers like Chattambinaadu and Twenty-Twenty. In an interview with Silverscreen.in in 2017, post the release of films such as Action Hero Biju and Thondimuthalum Driksakshiyum which signalled his transformation into a formidable character artiste, he joked about a new title bestowed on him by his colleagues in the industry. “I’m now called ‘New Generation Suraj’!”

When Suraj says “Let’s talk about Android Kunjappan!”, his excitement is unmistakable. In most parts of the film’s latter half, he shares screen-space with a robot. He refuses to call the experience challenging. It was rather an emotional affair, he says.

“I spent close to 45 days, in the company of the robot. We grew close. He was like my son. If you could ask the robot whom he likes the most in this world, he would say my name,” he says.

He modelled Bhaskaran after several people he had known in his life. “My father, in particular,” he says. “In fact, Bhaskaran resembles my father in his final days – the beard, the tired eyes. Like Bhaskaran, he was reluctant to express his feelings. He was brutally straight forward, and an expert at cracking jokes with a straight face.”

But Bhaskaran could be anyone from that generation, he adds. “People who knew Ratheesh’s (Balakrishnan) father identify Bhaskaran as his replica. Many fathers in that generation were like Bhaskaran. Sweet inside, hard outside. When I am immersed in a character, I think all these people I have met or heard of start influencing me.”

Adapting to the body-language of a 70-year-old man took a toll on his health. “The body pain was severe. But it is unfair to complain because I had so much fun being Bhaskaran.” He cites the scene where Bhaskaran is startled upon seeing the robot the first time and a passing shot where he tries to hit the robot using an umbrella.

The machine-human relationship, the crux of Android Kunjappan Ver 5.25, is what attracted him to the project. “It’s an important theme,” says the actor. “I think we are already living a world overpowered by machines. We are attached to our phones, television sets. If we switch them off and turn to the people next to us and talk to them, an entirely different world would open to us.”

***

It is not difficult to come out of a character, claims Suraj. “I leave a character as soon as I have to get into a new one. Two exceptions would be Thondimuthalum Driksakshiyum and Vikruthi. The characters in these films lingered on a little longer than I’d expected.”

In Malayalam cinema, the anti-tobacco announcement in the beginning of films are usually heard in the voice of the film’s lead actor. I ask him if it was a conscious decision to pass that job to his co-actor, Surabhi. “Honestly, Emcy never asked to me to do it,” he laughs. “But I wouldn’t have done it even if he had asked me. I didn’t want my voice to be heard in the film at all.”

Vikruthi‘s Eldho uses a combination of sign language and indistinct sounds to communicate. “I have never played a mute character before in cinema or on stage,” says Suraj. “In my childhood, I used to interact with many speech and hearing impaired people in my neighbourhood. Several people, after watching the film, told me that my performance reminded me of their friends and acquaintances. “Do you know them?” they asked. People could connect to my performance because I just tried to keep it genuine.”

Read: Vikruthi Review: Suraj Venjarammood Is Excellent In This Affecting Drama About The Ugly Side Of Human Nature

Sign language, he says, is the strongest universal language. “I have been to numerous countries in the world, in places where people speak languages I have not even heard of. Yet, I have never faced a communication problem.”

Before the shoot began, he met Eldho, the man whose life inspired the film. “I spoke to his son. I requested the boy to ask his father what he felt the day he was wrongly indicted and harassed. Why don’t you ask him directly, said the boy. And we got to talking in sign language. Eldho conveyed to me the exact emotions he underwent when the whole episode unfolded. I think I just replicated what he told me.”

The aching father in Finals is a fine example of both, nuanced writing and sensitive acting. Varghese master is an empty man, defeated by circumstances and gruelling depression. Suraj brilliantly underplays here, conveying Varghese’s pain through blank stares, and gentle and almost invisible body movements.

“I took up Finals because I felt it’s a story that needs to be told,” he says. The film is loosely based on a real incident. “My character is someone hiding a lot of pain. As a commoner, I could quickly and easily relate to his story when I listened to it first.”

Read: ‘Finals’ Review: An Ordinary Tale Of An Underdog Elevated By Good Performances And Sensitive Storytelling

As part of preparing for the role, he met many athletic coaches, and parents of cyclists. “Some of those stories are unbelievable. Professional sports cycles costs over Rs 8 lakh. These lower-middle class parents sacrifice and struggle so much to see their children win. My performance in Finals, essentially, reflects the lessons I learned from them. If you ask me how I do certain things on screen, I don’t know how to explain the process. It just happens… The fundamental thing in acting, I believe, is understanding fellow human beings.”

***

Suraj is thrilled when I tell him that few actors in Malayalam cinema in recent times have maintained a great consistency in picking fantastic projects as he has. “You will write that, won’t you?” he laughs.

“The fact is, I don’t have too many options to choose from. All I try is to not do the kind of characters I have done before. I take into regard the overall quality of the project, the relevance of the story, and the way my character is constructed,” he says.

“And I have consciously tried to cut down the number of films I do. There was a time when I was working on four films a day, running from one set to another. Later, I realised it’s pointless to be such an actor. I have made people laugh. I have tested their patience too. Now, my decision-making ability stems from the experience I garnered over these 13 years.”

Kerala Film Unions Strike Against Entertainment Tax, Theatres To Remain Shut On November 14

Protesting against the Kerala state government levying an entertainment tax in addition to GST (Goods and Services Tax), the trade unions of the Malayalam film industry will shut down theatres across the state on 14 November.

The decision follows Kerala finance minister Thomas Issac’s statement in the State Assembly on Monday that the entertainment tax cannot be rolled back. Issac was responding to a query submitted by Pala legislator and movie producer Mani C Kappan.

A report in The Hindu quoted M. Renjith, president of the KeralaFilm Producers’ Association as saying, “The proposed entertainment tax in addition to the tax rates under GST will affect the prospects of the Malayalam film industry.” All film shootings and production activities will also be stalled on November 14.

When the GST came into effect in July 2017, the state government had scrapped the entertainment tax. Now, on a ticket worth a Rs 100, 12 % GST is charged, and on a ticket that costs more than Rs 100, 18% GST is charged. In January 2019, Thomas Issac reintroduced a 10% entertainment tax, named the Local Body Entertainment Tax, in the movie ticket price, causing the movie ticket prices to soar.

On February 11, Mammootty, Mohanlal and FEFKA president B Unnikrishnan had visited chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan, requesting the government to review the decision, citing that the tax hike would be affect the industry adversely.

Kamal 60: Nostalgia, Friendship, And A New Era

It seems in his lifetime, the actor-director-producer, Kamal Haasan is all set to unlock milestone upon milestone that some of us can only dream of. On November 7, the veteran marked 60 years in the Tamil film industry. The actor’s home banner, Raaj Kamal Films International, was relaunched at a new office space in Alwarpet to mark the occasion. The actor also unveiled a statue of his mentor, the film director, K Balachander.

The actor’s daughters Shruti Haasan and Akshara Haasan were present at the occasion along with his friends from the industry including Rajinikanth, Nasser, Pooja Kumar, Bigg Boss Tharshan, Ramesh Aravind, directors Mani Ratnam, KS Ravikumar, Santhana Bharathi, lyricist Vairamuthu along with late K Balachander‘s daughter, Pushpa Kandhaswamy. The inauguration and statue unveiling happened in the midst of members of the press as well.

It was an occasion for many industry seniors to look back with fondness at the ways in which director KB inspired their journeys in the film industry and made them what they are today. Actor Nasser recalled that he began his career with K Balachander’s movie in the same compound that they were standing in. Even though the building was new, there were 35 years of history to look back on saying, “Balachander taught me how to carry myself as an artist when at a shooting spot.”

Director KS Ravikumar said that it was Rajinikanth who helped him narrate the script of Avvai Shanmughi to Kamal Haasan at the premises years ago. “Balachander sir was extremely passionate about cinema to have done about 75 films with a meagre salary of ten lakhs. Today his films are worth so much more,” said Ravikumar who added, “Along with all of you, I wish only the best to the two stalwarts introduced by him.”

Actor Ramesh Aravind spoke of how Kamal mentioned Balachander and his thoughts in every conversation they shared. He also added that it was only logical to commemorate the venerated director with the statue at the newly inaugurated RKFI office.

Pushpa Kandhaswamy was elated with the gesture of the Haasan family. “I know that Kamal Sir and my father shared a deep and meaningful bond. The letters he wrote to appa are still with us. In his last days, my father wanted Kamal to appreciate every move of his. He looked at Kamal like his own son,” said a visibly emotional Pushpa.

Kamal’s daughters Akshara and Shruti thanked everyone who was at the venue, and Akshara said that she was an AD for one of RKFI’s productions.

Director Mani Ratnam credited K Balachander for his love for cinema. “Kamal is Balachander sir’s disciple who worked with him, I am a disciple who never got the opportunity to work with him, said the renowned director, who added, “Kamal sir and Balachander sir opened pathways for my generation. I not only learnt cinema from KB but also learnt how to treat my team and colleagues with humanity from him.”

Actor Rajinikanth said that of all the films produced by RKFI, his favourite was Aboorva Sagotharagal. “I watched the film at 11 o’clock in the night and I needed to see Kamal immediately! So, I was at his door at 2 AM and told him that with his performance in the movie he had become immortal. He is younger than me, otherwise, I would have touched his feet,” said the actor. He said he has watched Hey Ram more than 30 to 40 times and that it also belongs on his list of favourite films along with Godfather and Thiruvilayaadal.

“Balachander knew what the Tamil audience loved, so, he asked me to learn Tamil. He said it would give me the audience’s love and elevate my stature,” said the Superstar who added, “Balachander loved Kamal Haasan. He used to admire every aspect of Kamal.” The actor also said that Kamal Haasan was very fond of director Ananthu, a second Balachander, who taught Kamal about world cinema and gave him novels to peruse.

Actor Kamal Haasan said that Rajini and himself lead a simple life and are good friends. When they were young and their respective careers were just starting off, they made a pact while they were shooting in AVM Studios to treat each other with love and respect no matter how life treated them. “If anyone had heard our conversation, they would’ve attacked us,” Kamal said.

The two stars were very critical of each other back in the days, Kamal said, adding, “I told Rajini the title ‘Ganapathy’ reminds me of Vinayaga Chathurthi. I found out later that the movie was called Thalapathy and that I had misheard it. But that was a minor thing, there was a point when Rajini said he’ll quit acting because of the fan arguments that had flared up before. I told him not to even think of it. Our fans just want to be a part of our careers, and they are being playful, we should just let them be. Since then, I hold a share in all his victories,” he laughed.

Kamal mentions that directors K Balachander and Ananthu can never be erased out of his life. “I would always be careful and cautious with every decision I take, knowing that KB sir is overlooking my actions. This commencement of RKFI is something I would like to cherish and celebrate more than my birthday. I’m just a tenant here like many others. Not the owner,” he signs off.
