Film Exhibitors Stare at Losses as Production Houses Choose OTT Premieres Over Theatrical Releases

The news of Hindi films like Laxmii, Chhalaang, Radhe and 21 others choosing an Over-the-Top (OTT) release over a theatrical one, has taken the film exhibitors by surprise.

After the Centre permitted theatres to reopen and issued a set of guidelines, state governments – barring  Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu – allowed cinema halls to reopen on October 15. Very soon, to the relief of nationwide exhibitors, the Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu governments announced the reopening of theatres from November. This gave exhibitors and theatre owners the hope of finally screening Hindi films.

Except, there are no films to screen at halls.

“It’s been 34 days now. Except for Zee Studios’ Suraj Pe Mangal Bhari and Peninsula (a Korean film), there have been no theatrical releases,” said Vishek Chauhan, owner of Rupali Cinema and a chain of eight theatres in Bihar.

According to Chauhan, the trend of Hindi films releasing on OTT platforms started with the release of Amitabh Bachchan and Ayushmann Khurrana-starrer film Gulabo Sitabo on Amazon Prime Video. The Hindi film directed by Shoojit Sircar released on April 17.

The ongoing Covid-19 pandemic and the subsequent lockdown had forced many production houses to push dates for releases, which were scheduled for a theatrical release. Hindi film Chhalaang (starring Rajkummar Rao and Nushrratt Bharuccha and produced by Ajay Devgn and Luv Ranjan)was initially scheduled to release on June 12 but was eventually released on Amazon Prime Video on November 13.

Other Hindi films like Laxmii, The Big Bull, Khuda Haafiz, Bhuj: The Pride of India, Radhe were all scheduled to have theatrical releases, but were later sold to OTT platforms like Disney+ Hotstar, Amazon Prime Video, and Netflix.

Tagging a few of the popular Hindi film actors like Salman Khan, Shahrukh Khan, Aamir Khan, Akshay Kumar and Ajay Devgn in a series of tweets regarding the issue, Chauhan asked whether the actors had forgotten about theatres. He also asked them whether he and 45 other single-screen exhibitors in Bihar, who had opened their shutters during the pandemic, should close down due to the lack of new releases.

In West Bengal, exhibitors wrote a letter to Salman Khan, urging him to release his upcoming film Radhe in theatres. The letter was written by Satadeep Saha (owner of single-screen halls Ajanta Cinema, Rupasi Cinema, and Rupasi Binodan) and supported by other exhibitors in the state. It listed the names of families whose lives depend on the release of Hindi films in theatres.

“Just to name some: theatre staff, canteen staff, publicity boy for posters and mike, and hawkers outside this cinema selling various products are all dependant,” the letter read.

The letter was sent to Salman Khan Films on November 9. “It’s been nine days and we are yet to hear back,” said Saha.

Chauhan, too, stated that his concerns are yet to be addressed. “We at theatres are paying salaries and electricity bills while Bollywood keeps cashing in on OTT releases. Are they not supposed to be at the forefront for helping others?” asked Chauhan.

Chauhan also took note of actors like Kumar donating Rs 25 crore to the Prime Minister’s Citizens Assistance and Relief in Emergency Situations (PM Cares fund), a charitable trust created by the Union government amid the pandemic.

The exhibitors are also concerned about the delaying of big budget Hindi films between April and May in 2021 for increased revenue.

“(Director) Rohit Shetty is adamant for a theatrical release of Sooryavanshi but is stalling it for next year. So are movies like Bunty Aur Babli 2 and Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar (Yash Raj Films) and Indoo Ki Jawani (T-Series and Emmay Entertainment),” said Saha.

The gap in between film releases is excruciating, he said, adding that he might not be able to sustain his business if there were no new releases.

Stree Producers Maddock Films and D2R Films Amicably Resolve Dispute over Profit Sharing

Maddock Films, which co-produced the Rajkummar Rao and Shraddha Kapoor-starrer horror-comedy Stree, along with D2R Films, confirmed on Thursday that they had “amicably resolved the differences” that had arisen after the producers were embroiled in a financial dispute regarding the film’s profit sharing.

“We, Maddock Films Pvt Ltd (and its promoter Mr. Dinesh Vijan) & D2R Films LLP (and its partners Raj Nidimoru & Krishna DK) are pleased to confirm that we have amicably resolved our differences with regard to our film Stree which released in August 2018,” the statement released by Maddock Films said.

All the copyright and intellectual property rights of the film, including the derivative rights, will be solely owned by Maddock Films, the statement added.

Earlier, Silverscreen India had reported that a source close to D2R films had confirmed that Vijan was ready to share only Rs 5 crore with Nidimoru and DK.

“Raj & DK were already underway with the production when Dinesh contacted them and convinced them to let him be part of the project. Not only did they oversee the shoot throughout the schedules in Chanderi and Bhopal, but were also leading every single process from casting, finding crew, shooting, editing, music, mixing, and the final cut,” the source close to the production house had told Silverscreen India.

A report in The New Indian Express said that the tussle between the producers began when Vijan did not accept to split the profit that came up to Rs 40 crore with Nidimoru and DK, despite the equal profit-sharing partnership deal that existed among the producers.

Stree was co-produced by Dinesh Vijan under the Maddock Films Pvt Ltd banner, and by Raj Nidimoru and Krishna DK under the D2R Films banner. It was helmed by debutant director Amar Kaushik and released in August 2018. The film was one of the biggest hits of that year and had grossed over Rs 100 crore.

Tirandaj Shabor: Production of Bengali Crime Thriller, Starring Saswata Chatterjee, to Start Production Soon

The production of Bengali film Tirandaj Shaborthe fourth film in the Goenda Shabor series starring actor Saswata Chatterjee as police detective Shabor Dasgupta, will start soon, announced the film’s director Arindam Sil

Sil took to social media to announce that the crime thriller will be his 12th film and that shooting will begin from November 25.

Besides Chatterjee, the film stars Devlina Kumar, Padmanabha Dasgupta, Joydip Kundu, Anirban Chakraborti, Shankar Chakraborty, Debjani Chatterjee, Rammani, and Nigel Akkara.

Chatterjee will be reprising his role as Shabor in this film after Ebar Shabor (2015), Eagoler Chokh (2016) and Aschhe Abar Shabor (2018). He has reportedly been losing weight to prepare for his role.

According to Sil, the fourth film in the detective thriller series will have a humane story with a realistic approach and has love, crime, and some “high-octane” action sequences. Unlike the other films, Shabor’s bumbling assistant Nanda will get a significant screen time. He mentioned that some interesting characters from different backgrounds have been added, all of which is weaved together in the end.

The Goenda Shabor stories were written by renowned Bengali writer Shirshendu Mukhopadhyay. In an instance of a fictional character meeting its creator’s world, the upcoming film is set to be shot at Mukhopadhyay’s former residence. Sil was out location hunting for Tirandaj Shabor in October when he stumbled upon a house in which Mukhopadhyay – winner of a Sahitya Akademi Award- once stayed at and decided to shoot there. Calling it a “divine intervention” and “miracle”, Sil posted a picture of the house on social media.

Among the recent works of Sil is Mayakumari, a tribute film to celebrate 100 years of Bengali cinema, set in the backdrop of the 1940s.

Bengali cinema has seen a host of detective series, including Feluda (written by Satyajit Ray), Byomkesh Bakshi (created by Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay), and Kakababu (created by Sunil Gangopadhyay). However, unlike Feluda, Kakababu and Byomkesh Bakshi- who are all private detectives- Goenda Shabor works in the detective department of the Kolkata Police.

Eeswaran: Animal Welfare Board Issues Show-cause Notice to Film’s Team

The makers of Simbu’s upcoming film Eeswaran have been served with a show-cause notice by the Animal Welfare Board of India for using a computer-generated snake in the film’s trailer and poster without obtaining a clearance certificate.

The letter also prompted the makers to stop the circulation of the teaser and the poster until permission was granted for the same.

“It is directed to you to immediately stop the circulation of trailer and poster without obtaining proper permissions and submit a written explanation within 7 days of receipt of this letter for releasing the said poster and trailer without obtaining NOC from the Board for using computer-generated Snake (look-a-like of Indian Cobra),” the letter stated.

Recently, the makers of the film ran into trouble with the forest department after a video, of Simbu holding a snake, went viral. A Chennai-based activist  filed a complaint with the Tamil Nadu forest department officials, earlier this week.

Responding to the issue, the filmmakers issued a statement on November 13 claiming that the snake was fake. “Truly we shot the scene using a fake plastic snake. That was made to seem like a real snake in the movie using graphics. The news and stills about this scene has not been made public with the permission of the production team. This video was taken when we were using computer graphics and got leaked. From our side we are investigating as to how this video got leaked,” the statement read.

Eeswaran is directed by Susienthiran and bankrolled under Madhav Media and D Company banners headed by Balaji Kapa and KV Durai respectively.

The statement added, “Based on a complaint filed by an activist, forest range officer Clement Edison has called us for an enquiry. We have completely complied with the enquiry and we have given an explanation from our side. We have also informed them that we will provide the necessary evidence soon. The shooting for the movie is being carried out in accordance to the guidelines provided by the Tamil Nadu government.”

According to the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, snakes come under Schedule II protection and are not allowed to be handled by outsiders.

Tamil Film Producers and Qube Keep VPF on Hold, Allow New Tamil Films to be Released

The Tamil Film Active Producers Association (TFAPA), Qube Cinema and solutions and the Tamil Nadu Theatre and Multiplex Owners Association on Wednesday reached a temporary agreement to put the Virtual Print Fee (VPF) on hold and allow new Tamil films to be released.

They have decided on finding a permanent solution and “come to a longer-term arrangement” on the VPF issue by March 31, 2021.

According to the service providers, around three small budget films will be releasing towards the end of November, while roughly six small to medium budget films will be releasing in December. Service providers also aim for some big budget Tamil and Hindi film releases in January 2021.

“We have decided to keep aside the VPF fight and focus on releasing films and attracting the audience to the theatres now,” said Senthil Kumar, co-founder of Qube Cinema on Wednesday.

“Maybe once the Covid period is over, we will all sit together and agree. Now we have all agreed that we should concentrate on getting movies out of the door and getting audiences back rather than fight among ourselves,” he said.

VPF is the subsidy that is paid by a film distributor towards the purchase of digital cinema projection equipment by a film exhibitor. This stalemate between producers, digital service providers and theatre owners in Tamil Nadu has now been going on for years now. Two years ago, the industry had come to a standstill for almost 50 days when the Tamil Film Producers Council and digital service providers could not come to a decision over the excessive rate of VPF.

On November 9, the TFAPA had announced that they would not release any new films until the VPF issue was resolved. As the stalemate over VPF continued, producers said they were ready to release films but were facing pressure from their association.

On November 2, TFAPA head Bharathiraja announced in a press release that producers had decided not to release any new Tamil films until the deadlock over VPF gets resolved by theatre owners. This was after the service providers did not pay heed to five requests made by the TFAPA.

Asked if the decision to release films was decided keeping in mind the festive period of Pongal in 2021, Senthil said: “Partly that, but more importantly we saw that audiences are coming back even for a small movie when we released some during the Diwali time. With quite a few other movies in the pipeline, we thought it will be better for producers, for us and for theatres if we can get all these movies to come out one after the other in a regular fashion and get audiences to feel comfortable about coming back. So we wanted to somehow keep that string of movies coming and they also understood that that’s more important than fighting over five per cent here and there charges.”

A press release by the TFAPA said: “QUBE has agreed to reduce the current rate of the current fee to the members of the Tamil Film Producers Association.”

“We had already proposed something that was good, so they just have agreed on that. We can’t disclose the business details of it but it’s nothing different from what we had discussed earlier,” said Senthil.

“We will start discussing in January, maybe right after Pongal. I think movies will be then in a full flow and then we will all will sit together. The thing is the theatres will also sit together so that everyone can discuss mutually. There are many ways to solve it if it’s a mutual thing. After all we can reduce VPF but there can be a different sharing ratio where  2-3% of the collection goes to the theatres from producers directly and then theatres pay it to us as a rental. So there are many ways this can be amicably solved if the producers don’t want to pay it to us as a VPF,” said Senthil.

“But we have to see if there’s some relaxation in occupancy by the government. I do think that by Christmas time there will be some big Hindi releases, for Tamil definitely these medium and small movies will make audiences comfortable. So, Pongal is a good time for Tamil and maybe Christmas itself will be a good time for Hindi,” he said.

He added that big budget films are likely to release once the occupancy in cinema halls is permitted to be raised to 70%, from the current 50% limit.

Wonder Woman 1984: Film to Release in US Theatres and HBO Max on December 25

Warner Bros. has announced that the American superhero film Wonder Woman 1984 will have a dual release in US theatres and on HBO Max for US audiences on December 25. The HBO Max release is limited to 31 days.

The decision to simultaneously release the film on the streaming site comes in the wake of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. The film releases worldwide on December 16.

CEO Jason Kilar confirmed that the unprecedented decision for a simultaneous release was due to the pandemic, even though this would “[entail] a patchwork of regulations, geographic considerations and, most importantly, fan preferences.”

While over 50% of theatres have reopened in the US, all major films have delayed their theatrical releases to 2021. This includes Disney’s Marvel line-up- Black Widow, Shang-Chi and Legend of the Ten Rings, Universal’s Jurassic World: Dominion, and Warner Bros. The Batman, The Suicide Squad and Space Jam: A New Legacy.

The last big theatrical release of this year was Christopher Nolan’s Tenet, featuring Robert Pattinson and John David Washington. The film released in August and made $207 million worldwide, a figure only slightly higher than its $200 million production budget. Meanwhile, the domestic market in the US contributed a mere $29.5 million in ticket sales, as per a CNBC report.

With rising cases of Covid-19 in metropolitan cities like New York City, major theatres have been closed, resulting in a 40% to 60% dip in ticket sales, according to CNBC.

“We realize that a lot of consumers can’t go back to the movies due to the pandemic, so we also want to give them the option to see Wonder Woman 1984 via our HBO Max platform,” said Kilar. He added, “In the United States, we will also be making this remarkable movie available on HBO Max at no extra cost the same day that Wonder Woman 1984 premieres in theaters, for the first month of the film’s release.”

The film will be a sequel to the 2017 film Wonder Woman, directed by Patty Jenkins, and will see Gal Gadot and Chris Pines reprise their roles as Wonder Woman and Steve Trevor, respectively. While the film was scheduled to release in summer this year, a theatrical release was delayed after theatres across the world closed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Anticipating safety concerns, Jenkins and Gadot urged fans to return to theatres, and highlighted that theatres were being sanitised regularly.

Gal Gadot, who recently starred in Zack Snyder‘s black and white trailer of Justice League, posted a message on Twitter announcing the film’s dual release.

Tamil Nadu Theatres See Brisk Business Since Reopening After 8 Months

After remaining closed for nearly eight months, cinema halls and multiplexes across Tamil Nadu reopened their doors on November 10. This time around, movies released sans banners, crackers, or a huge crowd waiting for ticketing counters to open. Even without the usual fanfare, business has been brisk, said theatre owners.

“Theatres have been performing better than we expected. We thought people will have some fear and may not be willing to come and watch movies but all the prime shows on the weekend were almost full,” said Rakesh Gowthaman, managing director of Vettri Theatres.

“The performance was really good after the re-opening and more than what we expected,” said Ruban Mathivanan, managing partner of GK Cinemas in Chennai. “We feared there will be only around 20-25% occupancy but we had house full shows (50% capacity, as per Central government norms) on both the release days and the next day,” he said.

Santhanam‘s Biskoth and Santhosh P. Jayakumar‘s Irandam Kuththu were the only new Tamil releases in the first week since theatres re-opened.

However, there is a shortage of good content, theatre owners said.

“The two films which have released now, if word of mouth had been better, then the occupancy on weekdays would also be sufficiently good. But what we see is a very positive sign that theatres are standing strong even with Covid-19. As things get better, cases reduce and we get the vaccine, theatres will have to chance to come back to 100% occupancy and it’ll be the same as pre-Covid times,” Gowthaman said.

As content gets better, the crowds will get better, said Mathivanan.

“After the first two days, there was a decline due to the average content and review, but once we have good films, I feel people will definitely come back to the theatres. If you compare the content we have now, the occupancy now versus pre-Covid level is pretty much the same on weekdays,” he said.

However, theatres in smaller cities don’t seem to be performing as well as the ones in Chennai. G Rathnavel, owner of Royal Theatre in Coimbatore, said: “The occupancy is very less now, but we can say it has not changed much from last year. The percentage of occupancy on weekdays versus on the weekends is more or less the same as it used to be before the pandemic. But Covid-19 is not the only reason why the audience is less. It is also because of a lack of big pictures. But it will slowly pick up. When the new pictures start rolling in regularly to the theatres, then I am sure the occupancy rates will get better.”

In Mumbai too, there’s a similar situation due to a lack of content. A report in The Times of India mentioned that the night shows of Diljit Dosanjh-starrer Suraj Pe Mangal Bhari were cancelled in Mumbai’s Gaiety and Maratha Mandir cinema halls due to poor turnout.

Responding to this, Ruban said, “What we can understand from the collections is if there is good content, people will come no matter what. In Hindi, they have Suraj Pe Mangal Bhari which is a very average content and the market is very big there compared to us. Thus, they may be facing issues with bringing crowds back to the theatres. Pongal will be very good for us, that’s for sure.”

Pongal 2021 is expected to see releases such as Vijay, Lokesh Kanagraj’s Master, and Simbu‘s Eeswaran.

Gowthaman is hopeful of the Centre increasing the 50% occupancy protocol next year. “From now till Pongal, the performance should get better, and hopefully, the government will increase occupancy from 50% to at least 70%. After April, it may even go up to 100% occupancy if it is proportionally connected with the number of cases.”

Vettri Theatres, which is screening four shows a day, is doing nothing different to attract crowds, said Gowthaman. “Other than following the SOP mandated by the government, we aren’t doing anything different. Beyond that, we don’t want to do anything else which might scare the audience. We are following every norm to keep the audience safe, so that they can have an enjoyable experience. All our old products at the food counter are also available. The audience should come for a movie and forget about Covid-19, that is our goal,” he said.

The Witches: A Lighter Take on the Classic, Dark Comedy Tale

When HBO Max released the trailer of The Witches in early October, social media users pointed out that the film had to live up to the standards of the 1990 cult classic starring Angelica Houston.

The 2020 version, starring actors Anne Hathaway, Chris Rock, and Octavia Spencer in key roles is a modern retelling of author Roald Dahl’s classic 1983 novel of the same name.

Director Robert Zemeckis takes on the story 30 years after the original version was released. To make it more modern, he uses The Witches to bring issues of racism and othering. While he retains the essence of the book and the 1990 film version, his film focuses a lot more on comedy than on the horror element.

The context

An unnamed young boy loses his parents in an accident and goes to live with his grandmother. The grandmother tells him stories about witches, who are female demons that despise children. While they look like ordinary women, they have claws instead of fingernails, which they hide by wearing gloves. They are ugly creatures who are bald, which they hide by wearing wigs and suffer from rashes because of the wigs. Their spit is blue in colour and they have square-shaped toes, which they hide by wearing pointed shoes. They have a powerful sense of smell and can sniff out children- the cleaner a child is, the  stronger the smell.

One day, the boy encounters a witch while he is playing alone, but manages to escape. Soon, the grandmother and the boy travel to a hotel where they realise that there is a coven of witches, led by the Grand High Witch, who are staying at the same hotel. The boy stumbles upon an event, during which the witches come up with a magic potion that will transform children into mice. The witches find out the boy and force an overdose of the potion on him, which instantly transforms him into a mouse. The rest of the story is about how the boy and the grandmother devise a plan to get rid of the witches, using the same magic potion.

The deviations

Unlike the book, the latest adaptation sees a new setting. Set in 1960s, in the film, the boy and his grandmother live in Chicago. When he meets a witch, they immediately pack their bags and go to stay at a seaside hotel in Alabama. The film introduces the idea of racism and discrimination, but quickly drops it. Hathaway, cast as the Grand High Witch, mentions that she wants to get rid of only poor and deprived children, who will not be missed. This, however, is not carried through in the movie.

In Dahl’s book, the story is set in England. The boy lives in England and while his grandmother is in Norway, and she moves to England after the death of the boy’s parents. The book makes no mention of the time period during which the events unfold.

In the 1990 film, the boy is given a name- Luke. Dahl, on the other hand, simply referred to him as “boy”, which Zemeckis retains in his film.

The boy is also significantly closer to his grandmother in the book. He connects with her more than his own parents. This is something that is not reflected in the 2020 film, as they show the boy to be shaken and unresponsive after his parents’ death. The grandmother (portrayed by Octavia Spencer) also does not smoke cigars, as mentioned in the book.

The reason to stay at the hotel is a significant departure from the book. The frail grandmother contracts pneumonia (as opposed to diabetes in the 1990 film) and is recommended to go to the seaside to recover. In the latest version, this bit is skipped and they travel to the hotel to keep the boy safe from witches.

In the book, the grandmother loses a thumb during a childhood encounter with a witch, but she never reveals the incident to her grandson. She narrates to him horrific tales about how witches would either turn children into animals or curse them.

Both movies decide to pick one of these stories to highlight their point. The latest adaptation hints that the grandmother never directly came across a witch, but saw her friend interacting with one, which is later revealed as the Grand High Witch.

As a departure from the book, Zemeckis introduces the boy’s pet mouse Daisy, who was a girl who was transformed into a mouse by witches four months ago. In the book, the boy had two pet mice- William and Mary- with no back story.

The character of Bruno Jenkins, a gluttonous boy with distant and cold parents, makes its way to the film. After he is turned into a mouse, his parents refuse to take him back and he goes to live with the boy and his grandmother. In the book and in the older film adaptation, however, his parents take him back home.

The ending

One of the key differences between the book and the movies is the ending. In the 1990 film version, the boy returns to his human form from a mouse, which Dahl had disapproved of. While the 2020 version retains this element, it changes the final encounter between the Grand High Witch and the boy and his grandmother.

Rather than changing her into a mouse, after the boy successfully mixes the magic potion into the soup, the Grand High Witch has a full-blown confrontation with the boy and his grandmother before they transform her into a mouse. Her mistreated pet cat then eats her up.

Dahl’s The Witches is a grim comedy that has been adapted by both films, even though the latest version has toned down the macabre elements to make it a more comical and light-hearted rendition of the classic tale.

The film will release on January 14, 2022.

Ready or Not directors Matthew Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett are helming the film. The first Scream debuted in 1996, with Neve Campbell starring as Sidney Prescott and was directed by Wes Craven and written by Williamson. This will be the first Scream film that will not be directed by Craven, as he died in 2015, four years after the completion of his final film Scream 4.

“I’m excited for you to return to Woodsboro and get really scared again,” Williamson wrote on Twitter. “I’m thrilled to be reunited with Neve, Courteney, David, and Marley, and to be working alongside a new filmmaking team and incredible cast of newcomers that have come together to continue Wes’s legacy with the upcoming relaunch of the franchise that I hold so dear to my heart. See you in theatres January 2022, ” he added.

Campbell, Courteney Cox, David Arquette, and Marley Shelton are returning for the new film along with newcomers Melissa Barrera, Jack Quaid, and Dylan Minnette. The script is written by James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick. Williamson is serving as executive producer. Scream is produced by William Sherak, Paul Neinstein, and Vanderbilt.

In a conversation with cast members from the original film during a virtual reunion, Campbell said she was persuaded by the directors to come on-board for the new Scream.

“I had been really apprehensive about doing one of these films without Wes,” said Campbell. “The directors actually sent me a letter when the offer was sent and said the reason they are directors is because of Wes. So they’re even so honoured to even be asked to make this film, and that they’re such huge fans of him and the films themselves, and of the cast, and that they really wanted to honour his voice, which I really, really believe they did,” she added.

Shreya Dhanwanthary Interview: I was Taken Aback by the Response to Scam 1992: The Harshad Mehta Story

Actor Shreya Dhanwanthary has been a happy person, ever since her latest web series Scam 1992: The Harshad Mehta Story, directed by Hansal Mehta, premiered on streaming platform SonyLiv to rave reviews from both critics as well as audiences.

It’s not often that a show about stockbrokers and the share market finds an appeal with almost every viewer that watches it and becomes the highest-rated Indian web-series on IMDB. Scam 1992: The Harshad Mehta Story is a revelation – not just because it showed facets about the infamous stock broker Harshad Mehta, but also because it showcased the brilliant acting prowess of its two leads. One of them is Dhanwanthary, who plays the role of award-winning journalist Sucheta Dalal, who broke the story of the Harshad Mehta scam.

With the web series having struck a chord with audiences, Dhanwanthary has been garnering overwhelming acclaim and her social media is abuzz with compliments. In a candid tete-e-tete with Silverscreen India, the talented actor opens up about the show, her half-Telugu lineage and more.

Asked if she expected Scam 1992: The Harshad Mehta Story to become the highest-rated of all time, she says, “I’d seen the show and knew it would be special, but was completely taken aback by the response. It’s the biggest show of the year and is among the top 15 highest-rated shows in the world with a 9.6 on IMDB – we didn’t see that coming. Since it’s finance-oriented and technical, I assumed people wouldn’t really binge on it as 10 hours is really heavy. But viewers have done just that and even told their friends, colleagues, neighbours, etc! I guess when people love something, they just go all out and do it.”

Her family is thrilled, especially her father, who works in the finance sector. “He said that he’s finally going to see something I did, because it’s related to finance and he thoroughly enjoyed it.”

She had to prepare for the role to learn what the technical finance terms meant. “I had to know what I was talking about. The whole credit goes to the entire team, art design, production, hair and makeup team and wonderful writers. They took care of everything, I did the least amount of work,” she says.

While the scam happened in 1992 and shocked the nation with its enormity, how aware was the actor about the incident when growing up?

“I knew very briefly about it because my Dad made sure we had healthy general knowledge when growing up in the Middle-East, but I took a full-detailed course from him before shooting for this,” she says.

While the cast members didn’t meet anyone from Harshad Mehta’s family, Dhanwanthary had met Dalal. “I was completely useless! I didn’t say anything to her and kept staring at her blankly and just said ‘It’s nice to meet you’. She’s such an accomplished woman and after the way I behaved, I was pretty sure she thought I was a cartoon! Pratik (Gandhi) still makes fun of the incident. However, Sucheta did send us a message saying she liked our portrayal. And what can be a bigger compliment than the person you played gives it to you?” she smiles.

Working with critically-acclaimed director Hansal Mehta, the man behind Aligarh and Omerta, was a phenomenal experience for her. And so was working with the rest of the cast. “Hansal gave us respect and had faith in what I brought to the table. To get so much praise from someone like him was very inspiring. And as for the cast, we genuinely like each other. We had pages and pages of lines and we spoke only in monologues. Even though it was an intense show, we’d laugh a lot and have fun on the set. Pratik is someone who’s a calm and collected person and wonderful to work it,” says Dhanwanthary.

Prior to Scam 1992: The Harshad Mehta Story, the actor was seen in the film Why Cheat India, opposite Emraan Hashmi in 2019, and two Telugu films, which she worked on after finishing as a runner up in Miss India South in 2008. As someone who doesn’t have any cinematic connection or godfather in the industry, she bagged the role of Sucheta Dalal after giving an audition for it, the same way how she got her other projects. She credits her perseverance for her new-found fame.

“If you stick to something long enough, at some point, it will work. You need a healthy amount of being in the right place at the right time. For Scam, I acted out the opening scene in the audition and they liked it,” she says.

Dhanwanthary started acting when she was only four-years-old and grew up acquainted with the arts, owing to her schooling in a Middle Eastern school that followed the British system of education. She’s been actively involved in dance, drama and theatre since then. The actor now has Nikhil Advani’s show in her kitty, which she promises will be “banging”. She intends to portray roles that she hasn’t played before or which have nothing to do with her personality.

The spunky actor is a huge fan of reading, writing and music. Interestingly, the versatile actor wrote, directed and acted in the show The Viral Wedding and has also penned a book. The music-lover is a huge fan of metal. “I’m currently listening to Katatonia, a doom metal band. I also enjoy other genres like Carnatic, Hindustani, jazz and rap,” she says.

As the conversation veers towards her ancestry, we ask the actor, whose mother tongue is Telugu, about her impeccable Hindi and she reveals: “My dad hails from Uttar Pradesh. That’s the benefit of being half-half, I’m a full biryani!

Considering she’s a Telugu pilla, she has a few favourite filmmakers in the Telugu film industry, including Shekhar Kammula and SS Rajamouli. “I absolutely love Kammula’s Anand and Happy Days. A lot of new guys in the industry are doing amazing things. I still haven’t received any offers from Telugu though – if something happens, then why not? My mom keeps asking why I haven’t received anything from the Telugu industry and my Dad breaks into jokes about how his side of the family is better than hers!” she laughs.

Godfather 3: Paramount Movies to Re-release New Edited Version

Paramount Movies released the trailer of the newly-edited version of The Godfather, Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone, on Tuesday. The new cut version of the 1990 film The Godfather Part III was released on the eve of the film’s 30th anniversary.

The edited version of the original will come with a different ending and opening sequence.

On Wednesday, the makers uploaded a video clip of the film’s director Francis Ford Coppola speaking about the release of the edited version.

The third and final installment of the franchise featured Al Pacino, Diane Keaton, Talia Shire, Andy Garcia, Eli Wallach, Joe Mantegna, Bridget Fonda, George Hamilton, and Sofia Coppola.

In the clip, the director said that while writing the film with Mario Puzo, the author of the book on which the films are based, had named the third part as The Godfather Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone.

“I haven’t given it a new title, rather its original title, Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone, he said.

“In musical terms, a coda is sort of like an epilogue. It’s a summing up and that’s what we intended the movie to be,” he added.

The story of the film revolves around the end of the patriarch of the family, Michael Corleone (Al Pacino). He tries to expand his empire by striking deal with the Vatican Bank. Unwilling to share, he makes enemies including with the Pope, who still had not approved of Corleone’s deal with the bank. What follows is a streak of plans and attacks on gangs and the end of the Godfather.

The film is inspired by two real-life incidents- the death of Pope John Paul I and the Papal banking scandal.

As per the Oscar-winning director, the scenes have been repositioned and the film has been re-pictured.

The film is the final installment of the Godfather franchise, that also includes The Godfather (1972) and The Godfather Part II (1974), all of which dealt with the Italian mafia reign in 20th century US.

The Adam Project: Jennifer Garner, Zoe Saldana Join Ryan Reynolds in Netflix Film

Jennifer Garner and Zoe Saldana are set to join Ryan Reynolds in the upcoming action-adventure film The Adam Project, Netflix announced on Tuesday.

The film is directed by Shawn Levy and is being produced by David Ellison’s Skydance, Reynolds’ Maximum Effort, and Levy’s 21 Laps. The project’s executive producers are Dan Levine, Dan Cohen, George Dewey, Patrick Gooing, Mary McLaglen, Josh McLaglen, Levin and Flackett.

A release date for the film is yet to be announced.

Reynolds is teaming up with Levy for the second time since their outing in Free Guy, the release of which was pushed due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

Although not much has been revealed about the plot of The Adam Project, is it said to be a time-travel movie where Reynolds will try to use a time-travel technology to reunite with a younger version of himself to solve a mystery.

In December 2017, Netflix had announced a four-year contract with Levy due to the immense success of their series Stranger Things, of which he is one of the directors. The Adam Project will be the first project under The Group Effort Initiative, an organisation created by Reynolds to support Black, Indigenous, People of Colour members and other members of marginalised communities find entry into the film industry.

The actor had taken to Instagram a few days back and announced his first class of trainees to participate in this initiative by sharing a group picture with them. Earlier, while announcing the project, the actor had revealed that it would be a paid training program for marginalised people of all ages, who could train on set with him. He had also said that the trainees will receive a stipend, on-set learning experience and industry connections. All the expenses will be paid by Reynolds.

Pieces of a Woman: Netflix Releases Trailer of Emotional Drama Starring Vanessa Kirby and Shia LaBeouf

Netflix released the trailer for Pieces of a Woman, starring Vanessa Kirby and Shia LaBeouf, on Tuesday. Directed by Hungarian filmmaker Kornél Mundruczó, the film has been described as an emotional rollercoaster about motherhood and loss. It is scheduled for a global release on January 7, 2021, on Netflix.

Pieces of a Woman tells the story of a Boston couple Martha (Kirby) and Sean (LaBeouf) as they lose their newborn child. Martha’s journey as the year unfolds is a harrowing one, filled with grief, aimlessness, and bouts of anger. The trailer shows her mother (Ellen Burstyn) asking her to fight for justice and file a wrongful death case against the midwife. Scenes of a court battle in the trailer show us a glimpse of Sarah Snook taking the podium.

The film also stars Molly Parker, Iliza Shlesinger, Benny Safdie, and Jimmie Fails. Written by Kata Wéber and produced by Martin Scorsese, it will be screened in select theaters on December 30, before it finally releases on Netflix in 2021.

Pieces of a Woman premiered at the Venice International Film Festival, where Kirby won the Volpi Cup for best actress. Pieces of a Woman also marks the English-language debut for Mundruczó, who gained a huge following with his 2014 Hungarian film White God.

Kirby’s emotional portrayal of a grieving mother is likely to put her in the Oscar race, according to some industry trackers. A report in Vogue has called her portrayal of a realistic birthing scene, in particular, a game-changer. In a post-screening question and answer session, hosted by Netflix, Kirby said her role was inspired by real-life mothers who had faced a similar loss while giving birth.

“I managed to find some really brave women who really wanted to share their experiences… The more I spoke to them, the more I found how difficult society finds [it] to talk about it. A lot of the women I spoke to felt as if their bodies had failed in some way, or they had failed their child, so [they feel] the guilt that comes with that, as well as the self-blame,” Kirby said.

Talking about how the 23-minute-long one-shot birthing scene was put together, Kirby told Variety, “We did four takes the first day and two the second day. I think Kornel used the fourth one. It was like doing a play. Shia is also a real theater animal, so is Ellen, and we all understood what it would require. It was exciting setting up, preparing, and then launching into it freefall.”

Kirby was nominated for an Emmy in 2018 for her portrayal of Princess Margaret in the Netflix series The Crown.

Supporting actor Burstyn has also received critical acclaim, as websites such as Insider called her portrayal of a stern and cold-hearted woman in the film unmissable. Burstyn won an Oscar for her role in Scorsese’s 1974 film Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, and has six additional Oscar nominations.

On Her Own Terms: Actor and Creator Merenla Imsong on Creating Witty, Satirical Content

Merenla Imsong says she feels emotionally connected to her character Balamon, a person of Khasi origin, in the 2019 film Axone.

Although she appears in only three scenes in the film, she delivers the intent of the entire film in a single line where she replies to an overbearing, racist neighbour: “If we all look the same, how do you know there’s someone new coming every day?”

Axone attempts to capture everyday racism faced by persons from North-Eastern India. The region, consisting of eight states, is often subjected to discrimination and racist slurs, predominantly based on their facial characteristics and diet.

Imsong- an actor, writer, assistant director, and YouTube content creator hailing from North Eastern state of Nagaland- says that she hopes to see characters from the North East seamlessly exist in a film, without any reference to their race.

This actor and creator, who uses Instagram to express satire, sarcasm and wit though her videos and sketches, recounts her journey from Kohima to the world of performing arts in an interview with Silverscreen India.

Learning Mandarin

Born in Assam and brought up in Kohima, Imsong shifted to New Delhi for higher studies. This is when she started pursuing a career in theatre. Since then, she has been part of many dramas including Not Just Akhuni (2014) and short films like Azaad (2016), The Passing (2018), and The Knot (2018). She has also written columns for newspapers like The Asian Age and co-wrote the screenplay of The Doorman, which released earlier this year.

Imsong first moved to Mumbai to play the role of a Chinese character in a Hindi television serial, where she was asked to speak her “native language”. The makers said that she did not sound Chinese enough and instead asked her to make “Ching-ching-choo” sounds. Imsong says that she was not surprised as she had been requested to do similar things in the past.

“For the sake of authenticity, I began learning Mandarin,” she says.

Imsong has played almost all characters that are stereotypically associated with people from the North-East on screen.

Massagewali (masseur), salonwali (worker at a salon), and momo seller. We get these kinds of roles frequently. We end up becoming character actors too,” she says.

Speaking about her process, she states she does not have any difficulty in grasping characters while shooting for films, series or short films. Since most of her acting is in Hindi, her first priority has always been the process of memorising her dialogues.

“Thinking about a character is important. However, for me, it is more about feelings. It helps me flow in a scene instead of having premeditated movements,” she said. Though she tries not to improvise, there is a point when she tends to switch from Hindi to English. Hindi goes “flying out of the window”, she says.

Scripting

Over time, Imsong says that there have been several opportunities in Bollywood, with respect to roles. However, most are not written in a way which fits the demeanour of those who are belong to the North-East.

“Problems begin with the process of writing a script,” says Imsong. She feels that racism has become the only point of reference for many writers when they write about the North-East. There are scenes where someone will call the character a racist slur and they will fight back. There might be another scene where a North Indian hero will rescue her, she says. She wonders if it’s hard for a character to exist without making a reference to their race.

When she acted in the short film The Knot (2018), she had asked director Avalokita Dutt not to mention the words ‘Naga’ or ‘North East’ in the film. The plot revolves around the friendship between two girls and Imsong felt that bringing token dialogues on race was unnecessary.

“Of course I will talk about racism but I want to do that on my own terms, not through words of someone who has not faced what I have faced. It has to come from deep inside when you are telling a story. It should come from experience,” she said.

Imsong feels that Axone was an emotional film for her and the rest of the cast as the experiences seemed very real. It reminded her of an experience where the police visited her house in Delhi suspecting that she had been cooking dog meat. There are days when she has lit several agarbattis to cook axone (fermented soybeans), because of its strong smell

“I was barely in the film but it is very close to my heart,” she says.

Road to fame

Imsong made headlines when her first YouTube video, A Presumptuous Chinky Assumes the North Indian Way was released and became popular. It posed some stereotypical questions to people from other ethnic groups in India which are often posed to people from the North-East. According to her, political satire makes people angry. So, she tries to slyly include it in her content.

Imsong is annoyed by the media’s portrayal of her as an anti-India person.

“They started putting out sentences like ‘look at this girl from North East standing up against racism’. It felt awkward because my intention was to create funny content. It was instead interpreted as ‘The North East fights back’. I was confused about why they made me racism’s poster girl,” she says.

Despite her videos coming across as complaints, Imsong says she never wanted to come across as ‘whiny’. She says she did not want to cry about being trolled with racist slurs as well. The aim was always to create content which is funny, accessible and interesting, she says.

She hopes to continue doing so on her own terms.

Justice League: Second Trailer of Zack Snyder’s Cut Released

HBO Max on Tuesday released the second trailer for Zack Snyder’s cut of the 2017 film Justice League. The trailer of the director’s cut, also known as Snyder’s Cut, was released on the third anniversary of the film’s release. Snyder also provided a virtual breakdown of the trailer in a live stream on social media platform, Vero.

Justice League, starring Ben Affleck as Batman, Henry Cavill as Superman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Ezra Miller as The Flash, and Ray Fisher as Cyborg, released in 2017. The film was a continuation to Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and was expected to rival  Avengers of DC.

The newly-released trailer was pretty much the same as the one Snyder unveiled during the virtual DC FanDome event in August. The trailer has been removed from YouTube owing to copyrights infringement for using Leonard Cohen’s song Hallelujah in the video. After resolving the issue, the two-and-a-half-minute trailer was re-released on Tuesday in both colour and black-and-white, with a few added scenes.

In a recent interview with The Film Junkee, Snyder had said that his ideal version of Justice League is the black-and-white IMAX version of the movie. “That, to me, is the most fan-centric, most pure, most Justice League experience. Because that’s how I lived with the movie for two years, in black and white,” he had said.

Snyder, who had directed Dawn of Justice, was in charge of Justice League as well. With the filming underway, Snyder stepped down as the director after his daughter died in May 2017. This resulted in Joss Whedon, director of Marvel’s Avengers, taking over as the director and introducing major rework to the original script. Whedon reshot many scenes from the movie and cut more than 90 minutes of Snyder’s footage.

The final film that was created after the tug-of-war between two different creative heads upset fans. Some fans claimed that the movie was incoherent due to its inability to bring about the different visions of the two directors.

Soon after, believing that Snyder’s version of the film would have been better, fans began demanding for Snyder’s cut on social media. Giving in to their demand, Warner Bros. decided to release Snyder’s cut of Justice League. In August, Snyder confirmed that his cut will be available on HBO Max in four one-hour instalments.

Though a definitive date has not been fixed, Snyder’s Justice League will premiere on HBO Max in 2021.

Tom and Jerry Movie: Classic Cartoon Pair Return in Live-action Animated Film

Warner Bros. on Tuesday released the official trailer of upcoming live-action animation film Tom and Jerry Movie on Twitter. The film is set for a theatrical release in 2021.

Announcing the comeback of the classic cartoon pair, the production giant released the trailer on Twitter.

Helmed by Fantastic Four director Tim Story, the film will feature voice actor Frank Welker who will  lend his voice to the characters of both Tom and Jerry, with a supporting cast of Chloë Grace Moretz, Michael Peña, Colin Jost, Ken Jeong, Rob Delaney and Pallavi Sharda.

The story in this version has shifted base from the hinterlands of US to New York City.

The story revolves around rivals Tom, a cat, and Jerry, a mouse, and their relationship that shuffles between enmity and friendship. The trailer starts with Tom and Jerry on their way to New York City where both seek shelter at a hotel which is about to host the “wedding of the  century”. Mortez plays the role of a fresher who is trying for a job at the same hotel and is allotted the task of catching the only mouse at the hotel (Jerry), the success of which will guarantee her a job. She collaborates with the rightful predator, Tom, and what follows is cat-and-mouse chase across New York City.

The trailer that is currently at 3.1 million views on Twitter, has animated characters like birds and elephants.

The Tom and Jerry series, presented by the Hollywood studio Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM), is an American animated franchise created by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera in the 1940s. Although the series was screened at theatres initially, poor revenue forced it to  shift to television in the 60s. The first episode was telecast in 1961.

After Turner Entertainment Co. (in a joint venture with Warner Bros.) bought MGM in 1986, the cartoon franchise was aired on Turner-run stations, including Cartoon Network.

In 1990, the creator duo along with Turner Entertainment Co. produced Tom and Jerry Kids, which featured  a younger Tom and Jerry. It ran till 1994.

Hanna and Barbera produced 114 cartoons for MGM, 13 of which were nominated for Academy Awards for Best Short Subject and seven went on to win, breaking Walt Disney studio’s record in the category. Tom and Jerry has won more Academy Awards than any other character-based theatrical animated series.

The cartoon franchise, despite its wide reception across the globe, has also faced criticism for using violent cartoon gags, however, with no visuals of blood. In the trailer as well, Tom gets hit by a bus, gets electrocuted, and sky-dives from a building.
