(Whether you win or you lose, ultimately the tokens have to reach home)”, and then moves on to show glimpses of the cast woven in between action, crime and comedy sequences.

800: Vijay Sethupathi Backs Out of Muttiah Muralitharan Biopic

Actor Vijay Sethupathi has backed out from the film 800a biopic based on the life of Sri Lankan cricketer Muttiah Muralitharan, a day after the cricketer issued a statement asking the actor to stay away from the film.

The makers of the film and Sethupathi had been facing a massive backlash ever since the film was officially announced.

Sethupathi’s publicity team confirmed to Silverscreen India that the actor will not be taking part in the project. Muralidharan’s statement was also tweeted by Vijay Sethupathi, who wrote: “Thank you and greetings.”

“I am issuing this statement after the controversies that have been raised in Tamil Nadu against my biopic 800I know that due to some misunderstandings about me, some people have been urging actor Vijay Sethupathi to withdraw from acting in 800. Due to this, I don’t want a great artist getting affected because of me. I do not want Vijay Sethupathi to face unnecessary hurdles in the future and so I am asking him to stay away from making this movie,” Muralitharan wrote in his statement.

“I was able to reach this position only by facing all the challenges in my life and not by becoming tired. I agreed upon making a biopic on my life only because I thought that it will be an inspiration and boost willpower for the future generations and budding cricket players. However, now even that is facing challenges. I believe that these challenges will be overcome and my movie will reach them (future gen and young cricketers). With the production company assuring me that an announcement about this will come soon, I want to let them know that I will stand with them for any efforts they take. Under such circumstances, I want to thank all the media friends, political personalities, Tamil cinema industry artists, fans of Vijay Sethupathi, the public – especially the Tamil people – who have supported me,” he added.

The film saw immense public outrage on social media after its motion poster was released last week. The backlash came in response to Muralidharan’s public support of the Rajapaksa government which was responsible for the genocide of the Eelam Tamil community in  Sri Lanka. Popular figures from the cinema and political industry including BharathirajaCheran, lyricist Thamarai, and Information and Publicity Minister Kadambur C Raju expressed their dissent to the making of the film and requested Sethupathi to avoid acting in it.

Tamil Film Producers Association Requests Actors, Technicians to Take 30% Pay Cut

President of Tamil Film Active Producers Association Bharathirajaa put out a statement on behalf of the body requesting actors and technicians who earn more than Rs 10 lakh to take a voluntary 30% pay cut amid the losses incurred due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the consequent lockdown.

“In both Telugu and Malayalam film industries, all artistes and technicians have come forward and accepted 30 to 50% reduction in their current salaries. In Tamil cinema, a few actors have come forward to reduce their salaries by 30%, considering the difficult situation of their producers. While we appreciate their kind gesture, it is not enough. Only when all the actors, actresses, and technicians, who get a remuneration of Rs 10 lakhs and above come forward and accept a reduction of 30% in their salaries, producers can reduce their overall cost, complete their films and release them without any financial difficulty,” the statement said.

The statement further mentioned that this request was being made only for films that have been stuck for over six months.

“We are making this request only for the films which were under production and are stuck due to Covid-19 and not for new films, which you are signing and commencing, for which you and the producers may decide on appropriate remuneration,” Bharithirajaa said.

Earlier, while speaking to Silverscreen India, producer G Dhananjayan had said: “We can’t enforce it, all we can do is request. In the case of my film, talks are still on regarding the pay cut but no one has agreed yet because the pandemic has affected one and all. If the pay cut is agreed upon, the loss could be made up a bit and it will be a partially good release for me. I am hoping that it happens.”

Dhananjayan is awaiting the release of Kabadadaari and has suffered losses worth nearly Rs 1 crore.

SR Prabhu of Dream Warrior Pictures, who is bankrolling Karthi’s Sulthan, had told Silverscreen India that the topic of pay cuts had been a delicate issue but the industry was yet to find a middle ground.

In the earlier months of the pandemic, Vijay Antony had announced a 25% pay cut for three of his upcoming films- TamizharasanAgni Siragugal, and Khaki. Actors and directors like Harish KalyanMahatHari, and R Ajay Gnanamuthu, had also put out statements saying they were either taking pay cuts or were ready to accept the same.

The filmmaker is renowned for his Shakespeare trilogy- Maqbool, Omkara, and Haider, based on the English bard’s Macbeth, Othello and Hamlet, respectively.

ACL have been such amazing partners and we are all excited to be on this journey.”

“I’m truly excited at the prospect of developing a new Agatha Christie film franchise in India, and am delighted to be partnering with Vishal, who is a multitalented and visionary filmmaker with a terrific track record for adapting works to create memorable pieces of cinema,” said Christie’s great grandson James Prichard, who is also the chairman and CEO of ACL.

Some of the past Indian films based on Christie’s works include Gumnaam (1965), Dhund (1973), Shubho Mahurat (2003), and the 1960s Bengali film Chupi Chupi Aashey.

WarnerMedia to Pull the Plug on HBO and WB in India

Mass media company WarnerMedia announced its plan to discontinue its linear channels HBO and WB in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and the Maldives starting December 15.

As per a report from Variety, Siddharth Jain, senior vice president and managing director, WarnerMedia South Asia, said: “After 20 years of successes for the HBO linear movie channel in South Asia and more than a decade with the WB linear movie channel, this was a difficult decision to make.”

He cited that the Covid-19 pandemic and change in market dynamics have resulted in this decision. Jain also expressed his gratitude to all the employees and stated that the media company “has a strong interest in India and is committed to assessing optimal opportunities to serve valued customers here.”

The company will continue to air channels such as Cartoon Network and Pogo in South Asia.

They have also planned on retaining employees in cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Bangalore to ensure  smooth operations of these channels and the distribution of CNN International.

The move comes weeks after the head of international WarnerMedia Gerhard Zeiler said that they have not reached their intended scale in India.

According to Live Mint, he hinted that online streaming service HBO Max could be brought to India. Speaking to the APOS Summit 2020 in September, Zeiler had stated, “We have our work cut out in the market. But you will hear more about HBO Max in the next months or next year. It’s going to be our workhorse going forward.”

A report by Tech Crunch states that HBO will still continue to maintain a content syndication partnership with Disney Hotstar to stream various HBO shows such as Last Week Tonight with John Oliver.

The Problem with Adult Comedies

When the upcoming Tamil film Irandam Kuththu’s teaser was released, it invited a barrage of backlash from both the audience and the film industry.

Veteran director Bharathiraja even went on to pen a letter criticising the contents of the teaser.

“When the teaser released, I was expecting some amount of criticism but this level of controversy was unexpected,” says the movie’s director, Santhosh P Jayakumar.

Adult comedies are not new to polarised opinions of audiences and critics.

“As they say, one man’s sexuality is another man’s vulgarity. There is no objective way to see these things,” says director CS Amudhan.

As a genre, these films have become infamous for their problematic depiction of women and the LGBTQ+ community. Despite their potential to open up the conversation of sex, filmmakers are sceptical about whether that is the intention of the creators.

Untapped market

According to producers, these films have been highly profitable ventures. The 2015 Tamil film Trisha Illana Nayanthara featured lyrics such as ‘Hey naan unakku peiyu padam nee enakku bittu padam di’  (for you, I’m a ghost movie but to me you’re a porn film) and scenes where the male protagonist presses packets of milk placed on his chest every time a girl riding a bike encounters a bump.

Speaking on the success of this film, producer CJ Jayakumar says: “We got an excellent response. The adult comedy elements come out only in the jokes and dialogues and not through visuals.”

Films about sex and a person’s sexuality are not the bone of contention for many of these filmmakers. There is a niche audience that enjoys watching these films.

“There is an audience for these films and they have to be satisfied. But there is a level and limit for that. It has to be controlled,” he adds.

The Tamil film industry is no stranger to adult humour. Movies like Manmadha Leelai achieved it in the late 70s. It could be in separate comedy tracks in films or through dialogues and innuendos seen in films like Chandramukhi and Comali.

A full-blown film featuring graphic scenes and references has been a trend only in recent years with movies like Kya Kool Hai Hum, Grand Masti, Evanukku Engeyo Matcham Irukku, and Hara Hara Mahadevaki .

Differences

Considering the lengthy portrayal and explicit content, filmmakers view this as a rather discomforting portrayal of sexualising women.

“At a time when we are battling for gender sensitisation and there is a history of crimes against women, these trends in movies become deeply disturbing. It showcases the male gaze in an amplified and exaggerated form, ” says Uma Vangal, a film professor and documentary filmmaker.

With the view that these films help reinforce deep-rooted prejudices against women’s sexuality, many filmmakers do not necessarily see these films to be championing normalising healthy expression of sexuality. They add that these films are rooted in homophobia as well.

“These adult comedies usually do not normalise sex or act as a means to impart sex education. Most of the time, these films are normalising hypersexuality of women and slut-shaming,” says writer Sneha Belcin.

In a society where women are objectified, filmmakers feel that such films legitimise it when they are not done in a refined manner.

“They are making these films as a selling point. Sexualisation can also be an art but in these films, women’s sexuality has become a commodity,” says independent filmmaker Shikha Kumari A.

The problematic portrayal of the LGBTQ+ community often goes unnoticed in generic Indian comedies, feel filmmakers. Even films that are propagated and marketed as being pro-LGBTQ+ are not free from bias.

“Four months ago, we saw a sneak peek of an adult film doing rounds on social media. It was being praised, but the clip was highly offensive to the LGBTQI community.  When it comes to people’s sexuality this is how uninformed we as a society are,” says Sneha.

Viewing these films through the lens of Indian culture, such comedies are deemed uncomfortable and scandalous because a majority of viewers watch films at home with their families. The argument of such films going against Indian culture comes from a desire to suppress women’s sexuality.

Conversations on sex

As uncomfortable as it may seem, these films have the potential to bring the topic of sex to the table. Santhosh P Jayakumar believes that woman’s sexual desires can be depicted through such films. “People seem to think that our culture is where men can have sexual desires but women cannot,” he says.

However, a simple portrayal of adult content cannot achieve that. “An adult comedy film being made in a refined way is absolutely possible. Instead of it being in-your-face, a sophisticated version can be done but I have not seen anything like that yet,” says CS Amudhan.

Adult comedy films do have the ability to educate the audience and break taboos surrounding sex.

“A movie can contribute to normalising the topic of sex if that is the intention of the film. These adult comedies that we see, their intention is not to have an informed conversation but to just bring out locker room fantasies on screen,” says Vangal.

The type of adult films that make it to the screens today rarely have a nuanced understanding of sex and its aspects. The creator’s intention does not have to necessarily be about educating the audience. It is mostly about having fun and bringing forth an enjoyable experience for their viewers.

“These creators and writers just want a few laughs and claps. Rather, their motive should be to understand that such scenes and lines will have on the crowd,” says Sneha.

A considerable amount of television shows and films have seemingly mastered the art of creating sexual content without objectifying women. Works like Sex Education and As Good As It Gets have managed to open up the conversation about sex.

“Sex Education on Netflix or the film Kamasutra portrayed sex differently. They portrayed the science and emotions of it,” says Shikha Kumari.

Indian adult comedies have seen a surge in popularity in recent times. With both Hindi films and regional cinema churning out such films, they have already found a space in mainstream cinema.

However, when depicting women, these films paint them in caricature characters, as vamps or sirens. It is rarely ever about a woman expressing her sexual desires or exploring her sexuality. In such a situation, women filmmakers feel that it is imperative to make responsible cinema. It is not impossible to make films that have adult humour without relying on crude jokes and objectification.

“If you bring both the gender perspectives and dynamics, you can achieve that. There is an aesthetic way to show sex,” adds Uma Vangal.

The official trailer of the upcoming film Chhalaang starring Rajkumar Rao and Nushrat Bharucha was released on Saturday. The film will have a worldwide premiere on Amazon Prime Video, on November 13, the eve of Children’s Day,
“When I heard the story, I knew I could make it more accessible to a larger audience. For me, Chhalaang is a challenge,” said filmmaker Hansal Mehta.

While being extremely relevant to student and teacher’s life, Chhalaang is a complete package filled with emotions of love, comedy, friendship, rivalry and emotional drama making it a perfect Diwali family entertainer. We look forward to the film’s global release on Amazon Prime Video.”

This is the sixth film where the actor and director would be collaborating while it is the second one for the lead pair.

800 Biopic Row: Sarathkumar Asks People Not to Block Artists’ Enthusiasm

In the wake of massive public backlash against the upcoming biopic of Muttiah Muralitharan 800, actor-turned-politician R Sarathkumar, on Saturday, issued a statement condemning those opposing the movie.

In his statement, Sarathkumar wrote that it is disappointing when the arts industry has to face challenges caused due to political interferences.

“The media and the entertainment industry contributes Rs 93,000 crore to the nation’s income. Due to Covid-19, all industries are affected by economic downturn. In this situation, it is not right to block artists’ enthusiasm in producing new content in order to progress by overcoming several challenges. These incidents are not going to help the country’s growth or the economic growth,” he wrote.

On a similar note, the actor’s wife and actor Radhika Sarathkumar, too, had tweeted in support of the film. She wrote, “#muthaiyamuralitharan biopic &asking @VijaySethuOffl not to act. Do these people have no work? Why not ask @SunRisers why he is the head coach, team belongs to a Tamilian with political affiliations?VSP is an actor, and do not curb an actor. VSP&cricket both don’t warrant nonsense.”

Filmmaker Seenu Ramasamy, who has worked with Sethupathi on various films like, Dharmadurai and Thenmerku Paruvakaatru, on Saturday, had written on Twitter, that he is eager to know what would be Sethupathi’s decision. “There is no compulsion. I am also waiting for Vijay Sethupathi’s decision after he realises that the public’s opinion, which has been made with democratic thinking without worrying about any political questions, is equivalent to the God’s opinion,” he wrote.

After the release of the first-look motion poster of the film, people took to social media to express their backlash against the movie. Along with the public, popular figures from the cinema and political industry including, Bharathiraja, Cheran, lyricist Thamarai, and Information and Publicity Minister Kadambur C Raju, expressed their dissent to the making of the film and requested Sethupathi to avoid acting in it.

The heavy backlash comes in response to Muralaitharan’s affiliations with Rajapaksa’s government. On Friday, Muralitharan responded to the controversy and said that his comments were distorted by the public. In his statement, he had shared the hardships he had gone through during his childhood and his desire for peace as an ordinary man.

“Somehow this movie has got politicised and people are against it,” Muralitharan said in his statement. Chhalaang Starring Rajkumar Rao, Nushrat Bharucha to Release on Eve of Children’s Day

As part of Amazon Prime Video’s The Great Indian Festival, Chhalaang will be releasing for this Diwali on November 13.

Directed by Hansal Mehta, the film features Rajkummar Rao and Nushrat Bharucha in lead roles, along with Zeeshan Ayyub, Satish Kaushik, Saurabh Shukla, Ila Arun, and Jatin Sarna. It is produced by Ajay Devgn, Luv Ranjan, and Ankur Garg. Releasing on the eve of Children’s Day, the film features child artistes who will be an integral part of the plot.

Chhalaang narrates the story of PT Master Montu played by Rajkummar Rao and humorously addresses the importance of sports education in school curriculum. Talking about how director Mehta spent his time researching for the film and his experience working with children, he said, “The children in Chhalaang were cast locally from different places like Hisar, Karnal and Gurgaon. They are very natural with immense potential. Before shooting for Chhalaang, I had seen an interview of Shekhar Kapur, where he spoke about handling kids during Mr India and Masoom, and how he got those amazing performances done from them. He said, “Set them free”, and that was something that stuck with me. I set them free, they were great fun and that is visible on screen. The relationship that they had developed with Raj, Nushrratt & Zeeshan makes the film come alive.”

Speaking about his experience of working for the first time with children, Rao said, “I had a great time with the children on the sets of Chhalaang, both on camera and off camera. They are the real stars. They were natural, phenomenally talented and have added so much value. Their enthusiasm levels are absolutely commendable, even when the temperature went from extreme heat to winters, all these children had the same vigour while shooting and they really inspired all of us.”

Bharucha plays the role of a computer teacher and Rao’s love interest. Sharing her thoughts about working with the children, she revealed, “Being around children always brings in a sense of nostalgia and Chhalaang took me back to my school days. The children we were shooting with were way smarter and naughtier than most of us were at that age and this actually kept us on our toes the whole time. Seeing their bright happy faces every morning was just so adorable!! I’m happy all kids will be able to enjoy Chhalaang during Diwali and Children’s Day with their families.”

Rao was last seen in Shimla Mirchi (2020) co-starring Rakul Preet Singh and Hema Malini. He is currently working on Netflix release The White Tiger opposite Priyanka Chopra.

Bharucha’s last film was Dream Girl (2019) along with Ayushmann Khurrana and is currently working on Hurdang directed by Nikhil Nagesh Bhatt.
