Income Tax Department Summons Vijay Over Links With Anbu Chezhiyan

News agency ANI reported on Twitter today that “Income Tax Department summons Tamil actor Vijay over charges of tax evasion and his links with financier Anbu Chezhiyan.”

Four major Tamil film industry players were under the IT scanner. According to a press statement issued by the IT Department, on February 6, all of them were involved in the recent Tamil super hit film Bigil.

The IT raid on Actor Vijay’s properties and home made the headlines and had social media buzzing. According to a statement released by the Income Tax Department, “the common thread among these entities was the success of a recent film which was a box office hit, collecting around Rs. 300 crores.”

The entities referred to in the press statement are actor Vijay, Sundar Arumugam (the distributor of Bigil), AGS (the producer of the film), and Anbu Chezhiyan (financier). The statement says that the raid is still in process and they have seized “property documents, promissory notes, post-dated cheques taken as collateral security” and “ the seizure of unaccounted cash of around INR77cr” from properties in Chennai and Madurai, allegedly belonging to the financier, Anbu Chezhiyan.

On February 5, Income Tax officials questioned Vijay, who is currently shooting in Neyveli for his film with Lokesh Kanagaraj Master. IT sleuths had been raiding AGS Enterprises (producers of Vijay’s Bigil). News reports pointed out that close to 20 locations related to AGS have been raided.

Vijay was questioned by Income Tax Department officials in Cuddalore district “in connection with alleged tax evasion by AGS Cinemas.”

“In continuation of IT searches, Actor Vijay who is in a shooting at Neyveli is being brought back to Chennai by IT authorities. In the presence of Vijay, his house and bank lockers also will be searched,” ‘Savukku’ Shankar had said on Twitter.

IT officials confirmed that while they did not take the actor in custody, they did bring him back, and want to inquire about cash transactions. Officials also disturbed the shoot, according to news reports and sought to understand what his remuneration was for his previous film.

Ayyappanum Koshiyum Movie Review: An Unusual Coming-Of-Age Drama That Doesn’t Rely On ‘Formula’

Cast: Prithviraj Sukumaran, Biju Menon

Director: Sachy

Finally, here is a Malayalam mass/thriller movie that doesn’t rely on formula and our biases about what makes heroes and villains but prods the viewer to reassess her/his moral compass.

Writer-director Sachy’s sophomore film uses a mix of the aesthetics of Thondimuthalum Driksakshiyum and vintage dramas like Spadikam to narrate the tale of a ‘war’ that unfolds in Attappady tribal belt, between an outsider, Koshi (Prithviraj) and Ayyappan (Biju Menon), a local policeman.

War, because even though it might seem from the outside like an inconsequential feud between two men with a violent streak, the clash turns out to have far deeper layers. A lot of elements—Ayyappan’s past, the history of violence and oppression his people endured and resisted, the wounded morale of ordinary policemen, and Koshi’s sociopathic father—come into play. At some point, it transforms into a clash between the forest and the settlers from the plains who exploited the natural and human resources of the mountains.

Sachy positions himself a little away from the chaos to make an objective study of the characters and the situation.

The result is a gorgeous first half which proceeds like a richly textured novella, and a second-half where Sachy plays to the gallery, puts expository dialogues in the mouth of his characters to win over that distracted viewer who is against the concept of thinking, and brings the film to a populist conclusion.

Koshi is right within Prithviraj’s comfort zone—a variant of Superstar Hareendran, the character he played in Driving Licence (2019) which was scripted by Sachy. The actor who had been groping in the dark in vaporous science-fictions, horror-thrillers and misfired comedies, finds his foot in these characters into which he projects some of his off-screen qualities, especially a confidence that could easily be passed for haughtiness.

Ayyappanum Koshiyum is also an unusual coming-of-age drama. Koshi lands in Attapady as a former soldier and the pampered scion of a wealthy Christian family in Idukki highlands. His father is a patriarch who changed into the clothes of a politician to fit into the present age.

Over its course, the narrative slowly strips Koshi down to his bare essentials and reveals the boy beneath that tough physique and thick facial hair, who hasn’t had the chance to grow up and have his way in life. The long shadow of his father, Kurien (Ranjith Balakrishnan), which Koshi has always borne like a cross on his shoulder, starts to show.

Sachy’s screenplay is poetic; it understands that human nature isn’t easily comprehensible, and it is sensitive to every action, big and small, of its characters. In a scene in the initial part of the film, Koshi admonishes his old chauffeur who acts as his Man Friday and conscience-keeper, for pleading with a police constable. The screenplay traces it back to the man’s upbringing; he was taught that empathy is a sign of weakness, and to be a real man is to completely detach oneself from the feminine.

In the terrific opening sequence set inside a crowded police station in Attappady, the screenplay finds a story—sometimes just a flash of rage on their face or a movement of their hand—in every cop rather than looking at them as a collective. The rise and fall of tension in the scene are palpable. The viewer starts to empathise with the policemen standing alert outside Ayyappan’s cabin, to see what the next move of the new detainee (Koshi) is.

Sachy’s writing, like a torch shone into a dark room, slowly reveals the details of the characters. Close to the interval point, Koshi, who looked like an invincible giant in the opening sequence, shrinks to the size of a worm, terrified by the looming mountains and forests of Attappady. Parallelly, Ayyappan assumes an intimidating size, like a beast liberated from his leash. At one point, the trumpet of an elephant fades into the sound of his Royal Enfield which tears into the mortifying silence of the forest.

The former half of Ayyapanum Koshiyum also does a phenomenal dissection of power. It notes that power isn’t monochromatic, but has many shades and shapes. The power that a government job vests in Ayyappan and Jessi is deeper than the power Koshi inherited. When Ayyappan’s wife, Kannamma (a fabulous Gowri Nandha), breaks it to Koshi that he hasn’t really seen what needs to be seen from close quarters, he shivers. The man goes on to see that power, like gold, isn’t just an object to flaunt, but an investment in people and time.

Jakes Bejoy’s background score is overdone, although his use of tribal songs performed by native artistes is commendable. Sudeep Elamon’s sensitive cinematography is minimal in the right parts and dynamic in the latter half, ably backing Sachy in keeping the audience on edge.

The film has a fine set of supporting cast. Anil Nedumangad’s empathetic superior police officer who can’t seem to shake off the feeling that he started this mess, and the actor who plays Kumaran, the driver who is torn between protecting his master and his conscience, are well-etched out and enacted characters.

Is there another actor in Malayalam who is sensitive to the unexpressed like Biju Menon? The actor has a talent in grasping the vacuum between the lines in the screenplays that come to him. He lends to Ayyappan several signs of a man who’s come a long way, who has seen a lot of darkness. Look at the scene inside the police station where he realises that he has been deceived by Koshi. He lets out a sigh and admonishes his colleague for breaking down. There is rage and above that, a disappointment in human beings.

The prime difference between Ayyappanum Koshiyum and the many mass-thrillers that preceded it is its unwavering faith in the power of writing. It must be the same faith that stopped Sachy from going for a style overkill. There is no “Hollywood” touch that Malayalam’s new-age directors and young audience are obsessed with. Instead, it finds an immensely gratifying language closer to home to make a film that not just thrills but lingers in the mind.

Seeru Tamil Movie Review: Varun Is The Hero Of This Revenge Drama That Would’ve Worked Well Without The First Half

Cast: Jiiva, Riya Suman, Navdeep, Varun, Sathish, Gayathri

Director: Rathna Siva

Music: D Imman

I’ve been watching Varun feature in every film under Vels’ production (most possibly because of the fact that it’s his family’s). I’m not complaining though because he’s a competent actor. Seeru too has worked out to be a perfect film to launch him in a negative role. More than a ‘Jiiva’ film, it was a Varun film with Jiiva serving as a catalyst for action. There is more screen presence for Jiiva, but Varun takes the front seat when it comes to creating an impact.

Manimaran (Jiiva) owns a television channel ‘Kokkarako’ in Mylaadudurai along with his friend Gopi (Sathish). He is extremely fond of his sister Ilakkiya (Gayathri) who is pregnant and about to deliver. An MLA, who is against Mani for some local cable TV issues sets up Malli (Varun) to kill Mani, who instead ends up saving his pregnant sister. Mani and Malli befriend each other and tackle Ashok Mithran (Navdeep), a criminal lawyer and Malli’s unexpected enemy who was involved in the murder of a young girl.

I found the first half completely unnecessary. If I didn’t have to sit through the mawkish sibling sequences, the frustrating humour, and the so-called romantic scenes, there’s a chance this movie might have worked better for me. It didn’t add value to entertainment, let alone plot. The second half though has a good deal of ‘content’. But again, if you don’t see the story develop until half-way through the film, you wouldn’t bother indulging it as much as you would if it had arrived at the beginning. And that’s where the movie fails.

Rathna Siva has clearly defined his characters. But I only wish he’d avoided characters that just don’t help the plot. If Jiiva just needed to identify a number on Truecaller, he could’ve asked anybody around him. The female lead isn’t of any special significance. The MLA and policeman are a part of the story just so that Rathna plug some loopholes.

Through the film, everyone is seen offering poor justification for their actions. The fact that Manimaran could keep in control an MLA just by owning a TV channel is completely baffling (and we have the MLA explaining this to his assistant). A professional criminal lawyer is appalled by the speech of a 12th std student and decides to get rid of her because of the pressure building on him. And why is that pressure? Because her statements opened up closed cases at the High Court. Here we are, when nobody pays heed to open debates and protests; I want to meet these high court officials who open up sealed cases because of interviews from school students. And in that interview, we find the girl, Pavithra (Chandhini) acting way above her age and biting off more than she can chew. Why you may ask? Because when she was seven years old, she fell off a merry-go-round, went into a coma and turned ‘brilliant’.

The film does justice with its flashback sequences. The girls also deliver the right kind of emotion. If we remove Jiiva from the plot, the story would still move the same way it did. He’s not woven into the plot but only remains an outside element throughout the story. It’s more of Varun vs Navdeep than Jiiva vs Navdeep, with Jiiva helping his cause.

After witnessing Varun only in boy-next-door roles, his bearded countenance in this film was a refreshing change. I think we may have a promising actor who can play the antagonist after a long time. Navdeep is impressive in the role. This is definitely not one of Imman’s best albums. Editor Lawrence Kishore has done a superb job; even while the first half is boring, it doesn’t drain you thanks to his slick editing.

Tamil Movie Review: Vaanam Kottatum Is A Confused Mixture Featuring A Family Drama, An Action Film And A Revenge Story

Cast: Aishwarya Rajesh, Vikram Prabhu, Sarathkumar, Radhika Sarathkumar

Director: Dhana Sekaran

Is there an actress more talented than Aishwarya Rajesh, in recent times, who has been unjustifiably relegated to the sidelines, in a way that does no justice to her career? Scratch that. It happens every day to women in all industries but Aishwarya Rajesh seems to be suffering from this phenomenon more than anyone else in Tamil cinema. It’s also possible that there isn’t another actress right now in Tamil cinema, devoid of the inhibitions that come with being a potential star. She possesses a self-effacing nature that is completely counterintuitive to what you need to shine in a loud industry. But what strikes us first seeing Aishwarya on screen is the self-confidence, as stinging as the rays of the sun that Dhana employs in some scenes, that she can mould any role into the showcase that it never was on paper. Be it her early guest appearances in films like Attakathi and Kuttrame Thandanai or her delayed entry in a film like Dharmadurai, or one part of the second fiddle couple in Pannaiyarum Padminiyum, she has done this long enough to learn the subtleties.

In less than a year, Aishwarya has played the role of a sibling to two leading men. This doesn’t happen often. Neither do directors write such roles often enough, nor do actresses who want the top billing choose to do them. But Aishwarya Rajesh as the sister to Sivakarthikeyan in Namma Veetu Pillai and to Vikram Prabhu in this week’s Vaanam Kottattum, directed by Mani Ratnam’s assistant Dhana, has done just that. These are roles with more gravitas than the leading ladies of these films (she is the leading lady here), the partner who calls the shots on the leading man and Aishwarya Rajesh has made them her piece de resistance.

Vaanam Kottatum forms a confused mixture that cannot decide between a family drama, an action film and a revenge story. But Aishwarya Rajesh’s Mangai has figured it all out. She has the moxie to challenge two forces of nature in her family – her mother Chandra (Radhika Sarathkumar) and her elder brother Selva (Vikram Prabhu). Later, she (and the rest of them) must deal with a third – her father Bose (Sarathkumar). In some scenes, Mangai also has to be the manic pixie as imagined by a Mani Ratnam assistant – the one who talks in staccato, who shuns cigarettes as something for teenagers — and be the strident but sophisticated part of a friendship of desire. She switches between these notes with aplomb, notes that are discordant in Dhana’s script (co-written with Mani Ratnam). That’s probably the mark of a gifted actress.

Outside of this, Vaanam Kottatum has bigger problems. Its hero is like Agni Natchathiram’s Karthik, a tactful hothead who can charm if he chooses to, an apple that has fallen too close to the tree. Vikram Prabhu’s smouldering comes in handy here. Chandra takes the children away because Bose has gone to jail for the murder of two men, men Bose and his brother were fighting elections against. She says, “Naa poren”, she doesn’t want any part in this circle of violence and Bose replies that he’ll be no different from his forefathers. Have you heard that somewhere? Of course, you have. Vaanam Kottatum is derivative like that. This includes even the casting. As reliable as Radhika and Sarathkumar are, there is a 90s memory associated with the characters they play here. Think of Kizhaku Cheemayile for Radhika and a grocery list of characters played by Sarathkumar, beginning from Cheran Pandiyan. Maybe it is part of the charm that Dhana is going for, but it hardly translates in this film.

Vaanam Kottattum also busies itself with too many subplots. On one end, there is Selva, Mangai and their business in the Koyambedu market. It has an interesting but conflict-free trajectory to it. Then there is the strand of family conflict – Bose returning from jail and the children not used to having a father around suddenly having to deal with an overbearing presence. The film cries for more scenes in their home – what happens in that small dwelling when he’s around? What’s the evening dinner scene in this home like? What’s a morning like? A beautiful scene unfolds when Selva spots Mangai with his Telugu business partner’s son (Amitash in another Amul Baby role after Vellaiilla Pattadhari). He chases after her — his protective nature never failing his grouchiness — and Mangai tells him that she doesn’t say anything when he is with Preetha (Madonna Sebastian, part of yet another strand with no start or end). They are forced to put the brakes when they hit upon their parents out for a romantic ride. It’s a moment that encapsulates the different points everyone’s life is at, one with the weight of responsibility, another in youthful daze and two older people making up for lost time. But we don’t get enough of this.

The film then leads to Nandha (yes, that Nandha) playing a double role – twins – the issues of the man Bose murdered. One of them is painted as a pacifist but the other  is intent on revenge. The latter has no dialogues for the most part and he is always lit in red surroundings. Preetha Jayaraman’s camera uses limited but vibrant colours. Red for the vengeful Nandha, blue for the family’s home and green for Selva’s business and lush fields that feed it. Like any Madras Talkies film, everything is clean and beautiful. Rarely have I seen the Koyambedu market’s commotion this orchestrated, sometimes even drowned out by the rains.

There is an interesting confluence of religions in Vaanam Kottatum. Chandra leaves everything in Chinnamanur, Theni and arrives in Chennai with nothing but her children. The struggling family (who later do business with a benevolent Reddy) of Chandra is given a roof and a new life in a Muslim neighbourhood of Chennai (they live inside Hussain Ali Khan 1st street). Chandra also takes a job in a Muslim man’s printing press, and a lot of scenes in the film record the presence of Islam around this family wherever they go. Preetha’s family is Christian and Selva is shown as someone who is empathetic towards a family that belongs to a higher class – with a beach-facing home – but is suffering nonetheless (Mangai at one point says, maybe we should stay middle class forever), in ways worse than his own. It’s a notable choice from Dhana’s part to show Chennai as this religious melting pot that we probably don’t see as often as we should, and with its timing, it becomes one of Vaanam Kottattum’s highlight.

Vijay Deverakonda Has Some Weird Dreams To Fulfill In The Trailer Of ‘World Famous Lover’: Out Now

The trailer of Vijay Deverakonda starrer World Famous Lover is out now. The film directed by Kranthi Madhav (Malli Malli Idhi Rani RojuUngarala Rambabu) is being bankrolled by KS Rama Rao for Creative Commercials. Vijay will be seen sharing screen space with Aishwarya RajeshCatherine Tresa, Izabelle Leite and, Raashi Khanna in the romantic drama.

Vijay Deverakonda has this one goal in mind. He strives to be a ‘world-famous lover’. There are four women, Raashi — ‘The Partner’ towards whom he is seen throwing cheesy pickup lines, Aishwarya — ‘The Wife’ who receives harsh treatment and ends up despising life, Catherine — ‘The Fantasy’ who is his boss, obviously out of his league, and finally Izabelle — ‘The Girlfriend’ who accepts him to be not just ‘any’ Indian (whatever that means). Obviously, he goes out of control, ends up being someone else altogether and physically harms himself because he weirdly believes that it is the way to overcome the emotional pain he’s going through… Umm, different day, differrent Arjun Reddy? We’ll find out. Just as in the teaser, Raashi is more prominent than the other women in this too.

The makers took to Twitter to release the teaser.

Shot predominantly in France and Hyderabad, World Famous Lover charts the story of an audacious youth falling in love with four girls and how he chooses his partner from among,” Cinema Express had reported.

World Famous Lover will have music by Gopi Sunder, camera by Jayakrishna Gummadi, Sahi Suresh on art and Kotagiri Venkateswara Rao on the edit table. Actor Jayaprakash also plays a significant role in the film.

Two songs from the album have been doing the rounds on social media — ‘My Love’ and ‘Boggu Ganilo’.

World Famous Lover will hit screens worldwide on Valentine’s Day 2020.

Watch the trailer here.

Vijay Deverakonda meanwhile is also doing a film with Puri Jagannadh. Speculations are rife that he may be essaying the role of Sobhan Babu in AL Vijay’s Thalaivi, a biopic on former late Chief Minister and AIADMK supremo J Jayalalitha, headlined by Kangana Ranaut.

Suman Ranganathan replaces Pooja Kumar in Sibiraj’s Kabadadaari

Actress Pooja Kumar, who was set to star in a vital role in Sibiraj starrer Kabadadaari, has been replaced by Suman Ranganathan. Interestingly, Suman also played the same role in the original Kannada film.

Being a popular face from the 90s, this film marks a sort of comeback for the actress in Tamil cinema. She was last seen in Ajith’s Aarambam. Dhananjayan G, of Creative Entertainers and Distributors, interacted with the media regarding this development. He said, “We are very happy to have Suman on board to play this role. Unfortunately, Pooja Kumar had to return to the US for some personal reasons, and couldn’t be a part of the film.”

The producer went on to add, “She already knows the nuances of this role, since she has played it before. She is happy to be working in a Tamil film after a long hiatus. She has already completed shooting her portions, which includes a grand song sequence that we filmed in Chennai.”

The film is progressing at a good pace, despite this change in casting. G Dhananjayan, who prefers to be referred to as the creative producer of the movie since he is also involved in writing the adapted screenplay and dialogues along with John Mahendran, said that only 20 more days are left for the entire shoot to wrap up.

Produced by Lalitha Dhananjayan for Creative Entertainers and Distributors, Kabadadaari stars Sibiraj and Nandita Swetha in lead roles. The others in the star cast include Nasser, Jayaprakash and J Satish Kumar. Simon K King (Music), Rasamathi (Cinematography), Praveen KL (Editor), Videsh (Art Director), M. Hemanth Rao (Story) and Dhananjayan Govind-John Mahendran (Adapted Screenplay-Dialogues) are the others in the technical team.

The film is slated for a summer 2020 release.

We’ve Never Thought Of Competing With Each Other: Sarathkumar And Radhikaa Ahead Of Vaanam Kottattum Release

Vikram Prabhu, Shanthnu Bhagyaraj, Aishwarya Rajesh, and Madonna Sebastian starrer Vaanam Kottattum hits screens today. The film helmed by Dhana Sekaran of Padaiveeran fame is co-written by his mentor Mani Ratnam, whose home production Madras Talkies is bankrolling the film. This will be their third production after Azhagam Perumal’s Dumm Dumm Dumm and Susi Ganesan’s Five Star. It also stars real-life couple Sarathkumar and Radhika Sarathkumar in the lead roles.

Ahead of the release of the film, the couple shares its experience of working on the sets of Vaanam Kottattum.

“I’m glad that I’m an active part of several fields like production, writing, films, politics, and singing. For a certain period of time, I had kept away from films. Then we met Dhana, who narrated a script that truly talks of the bonding, happenings, joys and sorrows and the way all of this is dealt with, within a family. Both of us really liked the story and we decided to take up the roles with utmost pleasure,” said actor Sarathkumar.

He added, “We’ve never had the thought of competing with each other. Just like all the other actors who have performed, we looked at what was required for our respective roles and did just that.”

Speaking about wife, Radhika, he said, “She usually sticks to certain rules while doing films, but she somehow let go of those for this film. The only thing I don’t like about her is her temper. She instantly expresses her anger when she’s not happy about something, which I believe isn’t the right thing to do. In every other way, she’s a wonderful person.”

Radhikaa said, “We always respect the work we take up and do it willingly. I think that’s the reason we’re into so many fields and not just cinema. I would also say that it’s because of God’s kindness. We never had the thought of working on a film together. A lot of filmmakers narrated stories to us, but somewhere nothing fell in place. Then came Dhana, with beautifully designed characters and a gripping narrative, to whom we gave the nod. Just as he said, we never compete with each other.”

“I usually don’t work after 6 pm and if it’s a Sunday, there’s no way I’d be on set. But for this film, I somehow did not follow any of those rules. Dhana is very clear about his work and the staging of scenes. He wouldn’t film anything that would be rendered useless,” added the actress.

Speaking about Sarathkumar, she said, “He essays a fierce role in the film. In real life, he is a gentleman and puts in tremendous effort in every field he ventures into. The only thing that I don’t like about him is his naive nature of offering more than what even Karnan would offer to people. He wouldn’t give a second thought to whether the person is actually in need or is just trying to fool around and that makes me furious.”

Vaanam Kottattum also stars NandaaAmitash PradhanBalaji Sakthivel, and Madhusudhan Rao in significant roles. Preetha Jayaraman is cranking camera with K Kadhir helming art and Sid Sriram debuting as a composer with the film. Sangathamizhan E will be taking up editing responsibilities with ‘Stunner’ Sam choreographing action sequences.

Vaanam Kottattum is releasing in theatres today. Watch the trailer here.

Vijay To Return To Master Sets Tomorrow, After Completing Official Formalities

Four major Tamil film industry players were under the IT scanner recently. According to a press statement issued by the IT Department, the people were all involved in the recent Tamil super hit film Bigil.

In the early evening, it was revealed that the shoot of Master, Vijay’s next film has resumed without the actor, and he will return to the film’s sets tomorrow after completing the official formalities.

Singer-Dubbing Artist Chinmayi Lashes Out Against The Dubbing Union

Singer-dubbing artist Chinmayi Sripada called for a press gathering on Wednesday evening. On receiving news that her nomination application for contesting in the elections held for the Executive Committee of the South Indian Cine Television Artistes And Dubbing Artistes Union had been rejected, she took to the press to seek justice.

The singer had applied for the post of President but was denied the opportunity to contest stating that it was against the bylaws of the union, the name of which hadn’t been disclosed.

She mentioned that she had joined a list of 22 members who had spoken up against the unfair ways of the union and were suppressed for it. She pointed out several issues in the dubbing union that were left unattended to:

  1. There has been a deficit of 42.5 Lakhs even after all the commission swindled by the coordinators from big to small artistes, accounts of which are unknown.
  2. The labour commissioner let out a public statement to the government that 45 new members have joined the dubbing union in 2018 while in actuality there was an addition of 71 new members. “No scrutinization seems to be taking place in terms of fee or registration while taking in new entrants. We don’t receive receipts also,” said Chinmayi.
  3. The original purchase value of the dubbing union building amounts to 47.5 lakhs but reads 1.25 crores in the annual report given by the union.
  4. Several members who do not belong to the eligible list of voters surprisingly have the right to vote, but Chinmayi who is eligible for voting has been banned from doing so with no solid reason.
  5. Dubbing artists don’t get retirement benefits, pension schemes or insurance benefits but are deprived of 10% of their salary at all points.

“There was no way I could communicate with the heads as to why they had rejected me. An election officer had been appointed just for namesake. They were aware that the elections were going to take place, but they chose to not prepare for it in advance,” said Chinmayi.

She added, “They claim I haven’t paid my subscription fee of Rs. 120 for the years 2016 and 2017, so I was removed from the list in 2018. But somehow my name which was present in the 2018 member list prepared for March, didn’t find a place in the same list prepared for September. I know I hold a lifetime membership here just like I do in the musician union. I don’t understand how only the Dubbing Union has an issue. They keep contradicting themselves.”

Dubbing artist DhaSarathy added about how there was more than required bandobast arranged while Chinmayi had gone to file her nomination. “They hadn’t allowed a well-known member inside and insisted on verifying all her documents while there were so many unknown faces lingering about. Despite knowing that there was no channel for communication after the rejection, Chinmayi mailed the head of the union who refused to respond,” said the artist.

He added, “Head of the union, Mr. Radha Ravi has been reiterating in several gatherings and interviews that he was not behind the decision of banning Chinmayi from the Dubbing Union, and claims that it was rather an order of Ms. Vasugi, the electoral officer appointed for the elections held in 2018. I need to make it clear that an electoral officer does not have the authority to take such decisions and that his/her job ends after their electoral duties are done. If we ask for the official order regarding this, they have nothing to provide.”

Other artists like Madhiyazhagan and Rajagopalan shared the grievances they faced for questioning the dubbing union too. They have decided to file a case and deal with the issue legally until justice is sought.

“We Wanted To Register That ‘Mafia’ Will Have A Different Premise Through The Title Itself,” Says Director Karthick Naren

Arun Vijay starrer Mafia is gearing up for a worldwide release on February 21, 2020. Ahead of the film’s release, director Karthik Naren shares some of the interesting elements about the film.

Director Karthick Naren says, “Mafia is special to me as my film is getting released after a very long time. We wanted to title the film as Mafia to ensure that it doesn’t have a local flavour. Usually, while talking about drugs and gangsters, we instantly connect it with North Chennai, but this will have a different premise and we wanted to register it clearly through the title itself.”

Speaking about the reason behind getting Arun Vijay onboard, he says, “The protagonist of this film demanded a herculean physique and at the same time one that could think on his feet. Moreover, he is such a talented actor, who can easily exhibit any roles with ease. Be it a hero or villain, he can pull it off easily with an impeccable performance and that’s the reason behind approaching him for this role. Arun Vijay has done a remarkable job and the way he improvises and delivers certain scenes with his unique nuances has added more intensity to his character.”

He added, “He will be seen playing the role of an anti-narcotics officer and Priya Bhavani Shankar, the female lead, will appear as his colleague. She will be seen in a different role from what she has done so far.”

Speaking of actor Prasanna, he says “When it comes to Prasanna sir’s characterization, we looked out for someone, who has an inbuilt aggressive nature, who doesn’t react or erupt, but has a stunning physique and is capable of good action. We found him appropriate and I can assure that all these characters are going to be a real thrill to watch on the screens.”

Opining on whether the film is going to speak about the social evil like narcotics, Karthick says, “We aren’t going to debate about what’s good and bad as this issue remains to be vague. It’s an entertaining film with a cat and mouse thriller treatment.”

While Gokul Benoy handled cinematography, Jakes Bejoy will compose music and Sreejith Sarang will edit the film. The movie is being produced by Lyca ProductionsSubaskaran and has been shot entirely in Chennai.

“Vijay Sethupathi Will Essay The Character Of God And Ramesh Thilak, His Assistant In ‘Oh My Kadavule’,” Says Ashok Selvan

Ashok SelvanRitika Singh starrer Oh My Kadavule has been garnering great response for the trailer that was launched recently. With the trailer crossing 2.5 Million views in a short span of time, the expectations for this Valentine’s Day release is growing high.

Actor Ashok Selvan said, “I don’t want to make a humble statement saying that we didn’t expect such results. Yeah! We were confident with the script and the film’s output, but the tremendous response has enthralled us. The reason behind the inception of Oh My Kadavule was the urge to try something different.  Definitely, we have come across many rom-coms, but this one has a fantasy touch. My friendship with director Ashwath goes long back in time to the days of Naalaiya Iyakkunar. My sister Abhinaya has been the major reason behind this film getting materialized and I can’t thank enough Dilli Babu sir for his support. With a phenomenal success like Ratsasan, he came forward to choose a small project like this and his golden-touch escalated the film’s stature.”

He also added, “Soon after the finalization of the script, we were very keen on getting a perfect actress for the female lead. We felt that Ritika Singh would do justice to the role and yes, she has conveyed this role with best efforts.”

Speaking about Vijay Sethupathi’s role, Ashok Selvan says, “There is a particular role in this film, which strongly demanded someone, whose voice would reach out to audiences. It demanded an aura and charisma, which Vijay Sethupathi possesses. He is a genuine person in real life and that prompted us to approach him. He is more like a brother to me and has cared for my well being always. He will be seen playing the role of a God and Ramesh Thilak as his assistant. I can’t reveal more than this as it would be a spoiler. But I can assure that audiences will enjoy watching Oh My Kadavule.”

Oh My Kadavule has Leon James composing music, Vidhu Ayyanna handling the camera, Ramalingam on art and Boopathi Selvaraj on the editing table. Dinesh Manoharan is handling costumes and Ramkumar is choreographing stunts.

GV Prakash Kumar’s Hollywood Venture ‘Trap City’ Is In Post-Production Phase

As reported earlier, actor-music director G.V. Prakash Kumar has ventured into Hollywood for writer-director ‬‪Ricky Burchell’s Trap City starring Tropic Thunder, Person Jackson, and Big Momma House fame Brandon T Jackson. The film is currently in the post-production phase and is all set for release this summer. It is being bankrolled by three production houses namely, Kyyba Films, Nasik Rav Media and Kingdom Over Everything – KOE.

To add on, Tamil actor Nepoleon who is known for films like Yejaman, Thalaivasal, and Kizhakku Cheemayile is also a part of the film apart from Dead Presidents and Ray fame Clifton Powell, Notorious fame Dennis LA White, The Starving Games fame Juhahn Jones, The Body Sculptor fame Bethany Sharp and All Eyez On Me fame Erica Pinkett. It is also noteworthy that Hollywood Producer Tel Ganesan of Kyyba Films has been instrumental in taking G.V. overseas for Trap City just like he earlier did for actor Nepolean for films like Devil’s Night: Dawn of the Nain Rouge directed by Sam Logan Khalegi and Christmas Coupon directed by Daniel Knudsen.

The movie is reportedly about a rapper striving to make it big whilst working for a drug lord. A song that he records goes viral right before he gets arrested for a crime. How he tackles all the hurdles and achieves his goal forms the rest of the story. It has been shot entirely at Nashville, Tennessee.

GV plays a surgeon in the film while Nepolean essays the character of Naveen. Brandon plays DeShawn, Clifton plays Goose, Dennis plays Jacoby, Juhahn plays Trey, Erica plays Bella, and Bethany plays Candence Finestein.

Speaking of how GV was roped in, Producer Tel Ganesan said, “We got the idea to make this film in 2019. I met Prakash for a soundtrack that I required and that was when I invited him to come to Hollywood. Now that the Hollywood industry has accepted him as an actor, I think they will also come here for his music next. Through this film, he would be reaching out to an audience base bigger than the usual base. The English market comprises around 170 countries. So, the reach will be phenomenal”. He also adds that actor Napoleon plays Brandon’s bodyguard in the film.

GV Prakash said that he thoroughly enjoyed working on the project.”I am glad to foray into the industry with this film. I shot for around three days in Nashville. My co-star Brandon is basically a very nice person and I enjoyed working with this entire unit. In fact, we are in touch even after the film is over,” he said.

Talking about how the Hollywood industry is different from our industry, he said, “Both are different industries and therefore, one cannot compare. Both have their strengths. The primary difference I found was that they use live sound and therefore, no prompting is possible when one delivers lines. They also narrate the entire script to you beforehand making it easy to understand the essence of the story. And then we’ve got rehearsals which make us more confident.”

When asked if he got to feature with Napoleon, GV Prakash said, “We did not have scenes together but we did catch up with each other. Napoleon sir is a very nice person. I visited his home there in Nashville. It was a very pleasant experience.”

The actor-composer also added that he wouldn’t be composing for the film. “I have sung two songs for the film. It is a musical and also a thriller film,” said GV.

Meanwhile, G.V. Prakash Kumar who was last seen in director MM Chandramouli’s 100% Kadhal will next be seen in Sathish Selvakumar’s Bachelor, an untitled film opposite Varsha Bollamma, Vasanthabalan‘s Jail, Kamal Prakash’s Kadhalika Yaarumillai, Ravi Arasu‘s Ayngaran, Ezhil‘s Aayiram Jenmangal, Shanmugam Muthusamy‘s Adangathey, and in an untitled remake of a Malayalam film.

AR Murugadoss Asks Courts For Protection From ‘Darbar’ Distributors

Over the last few weeks there have been murmurs of distributors of Rajinikanth’s Darbar trying to speak to the actor about their losses. A video that did the rounds on social media showed distributors in a war of words with the police who stopped them from meeting him in his Poes Garden residence.

Neither team Darbar nor Rajinikanth acknowledged these. In fact, just a few days ago, a Twitter trend on Darbar being a hit was also done, with the #25DaysOfBlockBusterDARBAR.

Today, the film’s director AR Murugadoss has knocked the Madras High Court’s doors for protection.

The director has sought protection from the film’s distributors who he claims are disturbing him for losses incurred due to Darbar.

LA, Spirituality, Absurdity, All Converge In This Short Film, The Happy

On 4 February, The Happy a short film that traces the journey of Par, an Indian-American who is from Texas and New Jersey released online. Par is accidentally mistaken for a spiritual guru, while he (ironically) is in LA for his own fulfilment. The film has been written, directed, produced and also stars Par Parekh. The short film is also a kind of teaser for an upcoming web series on the lovelorn and spiritually lost Par.

Par bumbles through an awkward conversation with his ex, and happens to catch hold of a wayward flyer that offers him salvation, in the form of a free hug. What unfolds next is what forms the rest of the film. A small error, leads Par into a situation that puts off his spiritual fulfilment.

Par finds himself at the residence of Astrid, an actress who is waiting for her Past Life Regression therapist, but finds a bearded Par at her door. Assuming that he is who she has been waiting for, she lets him in.

The film employs cleverly-chosen music and sound effects to convey the underlying absurdity of the entire situation. Anticipation, suspense, and surprise are all conveyed.

The Happy is a kind of parody of LA’s infamous fascination with rediscovery and spiritual enlightenment. In the film’s LA, absurd human tendencies to over-mystify just about everything and mankind’s tendencies to typecast just about everyone are depicted with humour.

Parekh says, “The Happy is a place that exists just left of actual Los Angeles. It’s a highly stylised version of a place we think we know—a caricatured city playing a character itself. Here, the ultimate goal isn’t to be happy, but to have your brand of The Happy™ be more authentic than everyone else’s.”

The film, and the series which it anchors, was inspired by Parekh’s initial move to LA and his subsequent discovery of the city. He said, “Angelenos from every walk of life seem to project onto me their hopes and dreams and seek from me spiritual enrichment, which is really pretty comical since I can barely figure out how to get to La Cienega, let alone Nirvana.”

The Happy had its theatrical premiere at SeriesFest in Denver 2019 and was screened at Austin Film Festival as part of the original series program. “I am so thankful to my nearly-all-female cast and crew for helping me bring my vision to life,” says Par. “I hope my film will make audiences laugh as the Par character ventures through LA’s bizarre subcultures, meeting people who are so eager to find happiness, they think that a lovable goof can put them on their path to #bliss.”

G V Prakash And Napoleon Feature In Hollywood Production Trap City

It was announced recently that GV Prakash and Napoleon will feature in a Hollywood production. The film, Trap City, is written and directed by Ricky Burchell.

The film also stars Person Jackson, Clifton, Erica Pinket, Dennis “LA” White. Produced by Kyyba Films in association with Nasik Rav Media and KOE (Kingdom Over Everything) Studios, the film is touted as a hip urban drama.

G V Prakash and producer Tel K Ganesan of Kyyba Films met mediapersons in Chennai for an interaction on the film. Producer Tel Ganesan said, “I wanted to make this film last year. I had met G V Prakash in connection with a sound track. It was then that I asked him to be a part of this project.”

The producer revealed that Brandon Jackson plays the lead in the film and that GV Prakash has an important role, as a surgeon in the film. According to the producer, it is GV Prakash’s character that saves the hero’s life. “Brandon gets shot and it is G V Prakash, who saves the hero in the film. After an attempt on his life, he faces the greatest choice of his life,” the producer said.

Explaining his choice for the role, the producer said, “When I met him, I realised that he had potential. I loved his work.” He also said that this film would increase the actor’s visibility much more than his current exposure with the local and international audiences since the market for English films is bigger.

The producer also revealed that the film will release worldwide in English first, followed by the dubbed Tamil version. The film also features actor Napoleon in the film, he plays Brandon’s bodyguard in the film.

Talking to the media about the experience of working on the film, actor and music director G V Prakash said that he thoroughly enjoyed working on the project. “Both are different industries and therefore, one cannot compare. The primary difference I found was that they use Live sound and therefore, no prompting is possible when one delivers lines.”

The actor-composer, did not, however, have any scenes with Napoleon. He said, “I met Napoleon sir, and visited his home in Nashville.” The actor however clarified that he had only acted in Trap City and that he hadn’t scored its music. On the home front, G V Prakash said his next film will be Vasantabalan’s Jail for which he is composing the music.

Kajal Aggarwal Is First South Indian Actress At Madamme Tussauds, Singapore

In a first for any actress from the South Indian film industry, Kajal Aggarwal has been “waxed” at Madamme Tussauds in Singapore. Apart from her, the other wax statues of South Indian actors on display are of Telugu superstars Mahesh Babu and Prabhas.

Kajal joins a long line of Indian celebrities who have their statues at the famous wax museum. The statue was unveiled today in Singapore in the presence of the actress and her family.

Posing with an amazingly lifelike likeness of herself, the actress was all smiles for the cameras. Calling the resemblance to her “uncanny” in her social media handle, the actress was gushing with praise for the honour received, as well as for the work involved in the making of the statue.

Rajinikanth And The Art Of The Political Flip-Flop; Actor Bats For NPR

In November 2019, Rajinikanth made a remark that raised eyebrows. He was at the launch of friend/actor/politician Kamal Haasan‘s new office in Alwarpet, Chennai. Speaking to the press after the event, Rajini said, “They [ruling party/BJP] are trying to paint both Thiruvalluvar and me, saffron. Neither of us will fall into this trap.” Over the years, Rajinikanth’s political flip-flops have left his fans, his detractors, political commentators and the political class confused and frustrated. Was it in anticipation of his film Darbar (released in January 2020) that Rajini sought to distance himself from the BJP and the right, or was this his natural position?

Having called his brand of politics, “aanmeega arasiyal” (spiritual politics), Rajini is yet to take the full plunge in politics. With the assembly elections in TN just a year away (in 2021), others have begun work in earnest, while Rajini is still playing the tease. DMK has joined hands with Prashant Kishore’s IPAC, Kamal Haasan, after an unusually quiet few weeks, is back. He extended his support to TM Krishna over the controversy around the launch of his book, Sebastian & Sons. Though Kamal isn’t making direct political speeches yet, his MNM atleast seems to be active.

In 2020, Rajini has gone back to tacitly supporting the ruling party’s position in almost all matters. Last month, Rajini courted controversy with his remarks at Thuglak magazine’s 50th-anniversary celebration in the presence of RSS’ S Gurumurthy. Rajinikanth said Cho was the only editor brave enough to cover Periyar’s rally where images of Rama, in the nude, were carried out in procession. Rajini later refused to apologise when Tamil groups demanded it.

Yesterday, The Hindu reported that, “The Income Tax department recently withdrew all proceedings against actor Rajinikanth for alleged concealment of income because the penalty to be recovered was less than ₹1 crore. Records show that they had chosen to levy a minimum penalty of ₹66.21 lakh, while the maximum penalty would have been ₹1.98 crore.”

Speaking to the press today, Rajinikanth answered an array of questions. Summons have been issued to him by the commission led by Retired Judge, Aruna Jagadesan, probing Thoothukudi shooting. The actor has been summoned for his remarks that the firing and the death were because of “anti-social elements” who were involved in violence and burned public property. He said, “I haven’t received the notice yet, but will cooperate fully when I receive them.”

Answering a question on the ongoing NPR/NRC/CAA protests, he said, “NPR is very essential. In 2010, Congress did it. It was also done in 2015. In 2020, we have to do NPR. We should know who is a local, who is a foreigner, shouldn’t we? It is very, very essential. It must be done. I don’t know what other people’s problem with this is. NCR(sic) has not started yet. When it’s done, we will see the draft, proceedings, and then see what it entails. They have clearly explained CAA. Definitely, Indian people have no problems because of CAA. It is about deciding whether or not to give citizenship to people from other neighbouring countries.”

He then said, “They are scaring people by saying that this is a threat for Muslims. How will this threaten Muslims? During partition Muslims who are here now, chose this as their janmabhoomi, their nation. They have chosen to live and die here. How can we send them out of this country? If something like this happens, I, Rajinikanth, will first lend my voice in their support. There is no threat to them. Some political parties are doing this for their self-interest. To students, my advice is to fully research an issue, speak to your professors and elders, before getting down to protest. Otherwise, protestors will use you.”  The actor also said, “He was an honest income tax payer.”

Whether Rajinikanth will continue down this path of toeing the government line, or if we will take a contrarian stand again, will become clear ahead of the release of his next film, which is ironically being produced by the Sun group. The film is being directed by Siruthai Siva, and is expected to hit the screens towards the end of 2020. There are also rumours that Kamal Haasan’s Raaj Kamal Films International will produce a film starring Rajinikanth and that it may be directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj.

If things go as planned, rival politicians who all want to win the elections in 2021, will be financing each other through films over the course of this year in TN.
