Siddharth And Karthik G Krish’s Next Is Takkar, Releasing In January 2020
Kappal filmmaker Karthik G Krish is all set for the release of his next film with actor Siddharth, Saithan Ka Bachcha. The duo have now announced a second film that they completed together called Takkar.
The film’s shooting has been completed, and is in post-production. The film is being touted as a romantic action drama. The making of the movie was kept low-key and the announcement came as a surprise.
Speaking to the press about the secrecy around the project, Karthi G Krish said, “We did this deliberately. Our entire team was in on the making of the project. The shooting began in February. And we’re almost done with the post-production, The film will release in January 2020.”
The story of Takkar was narrated while the actor-director duo were on the sets of Saithan Ka Bachcha. Karthik says, “I narrated the gist of Takkar to Siddharth and he immediately asked me to develop it into full-fledged script.”
Producer duo Sudhan and Jayaram from Passion Studios who made Kappal are producing Takkar as well. Takkar stars Divyansha Kaushik as the female lead. Speaking about the lead actors Karthik said, “The story is about two egoistic and hot-tempered characters, whose lives go through transformations after encountering each other.”
The others in the cast include Abhimanyu Singh, Yogi Babu, Munishkanth and RJ Vignesh. Takkar has Nivas K Prasanna composing music and Vaanjinathan Murugesan handling cinematography. The film is edited by Ga Gowtham and features art work by Udaya Kumar. The lyrics have been penned by Umadevi, Ku Karthik and Arivarasu. Dinesh Kasi was in charge of stunts.
Kangana Ranaut’s First Look In And As Jayalalithaa In ‘Thalaivi’ Out Now Features Poor CG And Little Else
With so many biopics of late J Jayalalithaa in the mix (at least three when we last counted – Iron Lady, Thalaivi and Queen), you would think there’d be a sense of competition with each crew trying to outdo the other. Well, director Vijay has set the bar so low, the others will have to try very hard to do worse than his Thalaivi, based on the life of the actor turned Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu and AIADMK supremo. This is perhaps the most disappointing first look we’ve seen for a biopic in a while, especially considering the fact that Kangana, who plays the lead here had transformed into an altogether different person when she played Kusum in Tanu Weds Manu Returns.
As a film about someone who’s still very much a part of our collective memories, and of our popular culture, Vijay’s Thalaivi looks underwhelming at best and shoddy and lazy at worst. What was the need to even launch such an inglorious first look, we wonder, considering the film is set to release only in June 2020?
The teaser opens with a recreation of the sets from Jayalalithaa’s acting debut in the iconic Vennira Aadai. While Kangana looks chic in those vintage Madras checks trousers, she doesn’t quite convince — Jayalalithaa in the song (Nee Enbadhenna) oozes confidence, looks casual and channels immense grace. We see Kangana in that recreation. Not Jayalalithaa.
What’s worse, at around 45 seconds of the first look video, we find ourselves staring at abysmal CG (or what is that?) Even the tagline, ‘The name you know, the story you don’t’ seems inspired by Dhoni biopic’s, ‘The man you know, the journey you dont’…
Here are some reactions from Twitter:
The Tilak mark is not of Jayalalithaa Ji, it should be a vertical one and a Vaishnava Tilak. Please make efforts to change it. @KanganaTeam pic.twitter.com/I23ZrybYFq

Adithya Varma Movie Review: Dhruv Vikram Shines In This Faithful Remake That Celebrates Aggression And Chauvinism
Cast: Dhruv Vikram, Banita Sandhu, Anbu Thasan, Priya Anand, Raja
Director: Gireesaaya
Music Director: Radhan
Toxic masculinity, aggressiveness and the belief that all of this is absolutely right are just few of the questionable ideas that Adithya Varma propagates. Right from its original Arjun Reddy to the remakes that followed, this has been the template. But despite all this, to carry a substantial role of this sort and to be able to convince the audience of the mercurial titular character is a tedious task. Dhruv Vikram excels in it, not showinge any trace of being a debutant through the film.
A final-year, ill-tempered, medical student Adithya Varma (Dhruv Vikram) falls in ‘love’ with a fresher, a demure Meera Shetty (Banita Sandhu) and the two hit it off. Because of Adi’s cantankerous nature, things don’t turn out in their favour, causing the two to separate, leaving Adi a victim of drugs and substance abuse. The non-linear narrative does get very monotonous towards the end with repeated shots of alcohol consumption and drugs. However, credit must go to the director, for his effort to stage the scenes a bit differently. I was glad I didn’t witness an exact replica of the original.
Dhruv looks and plays his part quite convincingly. Though Banita Sandhu was disappointing. In a character-driven story especially where the heroine has a major role, this was an opportunity wasted.
Priya Anand appears for a short while but is very effective. She’s at ease on screen. Leela Samson, who plays Dhruv’s grandmother also occupies little screen space but is very impactful throughout.
Anbu Thasan (Paarthi) does impress with his comic one-liners but doesn’t impress too much with his performance. Though he had a good role here compared to his last outing Kolamaavu Kokila, I couldn’t understand why his makeup was so awful, making him look greasy throughout the film. If it was an attempt to remind one of Rahul Ramakrishna (who played the friend in Arjun Reddy) the makers have failed miserably.
Cinematographer Ravi K Chandran infuses every frame with his trademark style. Eka Lakhani’s costumes stand out. The songs by Radhan aren’t too impressive except for the standard background score used in all three versions.
All said and done, this need to keep remaking a film that glorifies a chauvinistic man, does not show any progress in the mindsets of filmmakers and scriptwriters who seem to be staunch believers that men must be fierce and women must be submissive. But they cannot take the entire blame, because our audience encourages this and believes that this is the way relationships work. Many young women in the theatre were clapping and cheering every move of the protagonist. The rot runs deep in our system.

Anu Malik Steps Down As Indian Idol Judge After Multiple #MeToo Allegations
In November first week, singers Neha Bhasin, Sona Mahapatra and Shweta Pandit had come out against Sony Television’s move to reinstate Bollywood music composer Anu Malik, against whom there were multiple #MeToo allegations last year, as a judge on the reality show Indian Idol. In a series of tweets, the singers spoke about Malik’s predatory nature, and slammed the television industry for facilitating sexual harassers.
On November 21, Sony TV confirmed to the media that Anu Malik had stepped down as a judge in Indian Idol show. Mahapatra hailed the move as “symbolic victory” to all women who have undergone sexual harassment.
However, in a latest interview with Hindustan Times, Anu Malik said that Sony never asked him to step down as a jury member. He said that he hadn’t quit the show, but had only taken a three-week break. He denied the sexual harassment accusations again, saying the social media campaign going on against him was false and malicious.
Neha Bhasin, in a tweet posted on October 30, accused Anu Malik of sexually harassing her fifteen years ago, when she was 21. “We do live in a very sexist world. Anu Malik is a predator. I too have run away from his strange moves when I was 21. I didn’t let myself get into a sticky situation beyond him lying on a sofa in front of me talking about my eyes in a studio. I fled lying,” wrote Bhasin on Twitter. “I fled lying my mum’s waiting below. He even messaged and called me after that to which I stopped responding. The point is I went to give him my CD and hoped for a chance at a song. He was older and shouldn’t have behaved the way he did.”
When we were in Viva we met many legendary music directors. Out of which we were warned against two by our very own management n crew and were asked to wear salwar kameez n sit away @The_AnuMalik was one of them. Stop normalizing sleaziness. Stop making it ok@pratichee remember?
— Neha Bhasin (@nehabhasin4u) October 31, 2019
Malik was removed from Indian Idol in 2018 after multiple #MeToo accusations, returned to television in July 2019 through the children’s reality music show, ‘Superstar Singer’. Mahapatra and Bhasin slammed Sony television for bringing ‘sexual predators’ back to business.
Dear India, media @SonyPictures , @nehabhasin4u was all of 21, @ShwetaPandit7 was 15 when he tried kissing her,his family doctors daughter was 14 when he unzipped, countless other women shared their @IndiaMeToo stories about Anu Malik, including Danice D’Souza, #IndianIdol Producer https://t.co/D96ejmTjJ3
— ShutUpSona (@sonamohapatra) October 31, 2019
Mohapatra, on October 31, posted an open letter on social media, in which she said she was asked to leave the judge’s position of a music reality show after she spoke up about sexual predators in Bollywood. “I was marked as a troublemaker and asked to leave. Overnight. A year later, a sexual predator like Anu is back as Judge on national TV. What does this say about us as a society?” she asked in the letter.

‘Joker’ Director Todd Phillips May Work On ‘Joker 2’ As Well
Todd Phillips, director of the Joaquin Phoenix starrer Joker has reportedly begun work on the sequel of the blockbuster. The director has also met Warner Bros. Pictures Group chairman, Toby Emmerich for a deal to acquire the rights to develop a portfolio of DC characters’ origin stories, according to The Hollywood Reporter, which broke this story.
“Warner Bros. is very protective of the DC canon. And all other DC deals have been for one film, and one film only. But Phillips did emerge from the meeting with the rights to at least one other DC story, sources say. And now that Joker has crossed the $1 billion mark, a sequel is on the way. As the movie keeps raking in money overseas, Phillips is in talks to reprise his role as director for a second Joker outing (he and Scott Silver, who penned the gritty Joker screenplay, will write the follow-up), THR has learned,” reported The Hollywood Reporter.
Joaquin Phoenix, who played ‘Joker’, a clown with a mental illness impressed audiences with his outstanding performance and is believed to have emerged as a leading contendor for the ‘Best Actor’ award at the Oscars. The film (spoiler alert) ended with the revelation that Bruce Wayne a.k.a Batman is the half-brother of Joker. Though it could all well turn out to be untrue, as it is based on a letter written by Penny Fleck, Joker’s mother character in the film, who too is mentally unstable. Joker’s plan of action after the commotion he creates in Gotham city was also left as a cliffhanger.
The Hollywood Reporter article also confirmed that Todd wouldn’t be exploring Batman’s backstory in the sequel, leaving that task solely in the hands of writer-director Matt Reeves, whose The Batman, starring Robert Pattinson, is coming to theaters June 25, 2021.

Rosshan Andrrews On Prathi Poovan Kozhi: “I’ve Always Wanted To Do A Realistic Film”
The first poster of Prathi Poovan Kozhi, directed by Rosshan Andrrews and written by Unni R, was released by actor Mohanlal on Wednesday evening. The poster features three roosters superimposed over an angry Manju Warrier staring into the camera. In the film, Manju plays Madhuri, a saleswoman in Kottayam.
This is Manju’s second project with Andrrews who directed her comeback film, How Old Are You (2012).
Prathi Poovan Kozhi isn’t based on Unni R’s novella of the same name, says Andrrews who is also playing one of the central roles in the film. “I asked him if I could use this title since I liked it very much. The film is based on another published story of his, whose name I can’t reveal now.”
Andrrews and Unni R were initially planning to collaborate for another film, titled Diego Garcia, starring Nivin Pauly. However, the project was shelved for technical reasons. “Diego Garcia is a big-budget film which needs a lot of planning and time. We haven’t abandoned the project. The screenplay is ready. Work will officially begin after the release of Prathi Poovan Kozhi,” says the director.
“It’s a very relevant subject. Manju’s character will touch a chord with every woman,” says Andrrews. “After Kayamkulam Kochunni, which was a period drama, I wanted to do a realistic film, about people leading ordinary lives. I have always been fascinated by that genre.”
Andrrews is also making his acting debut through the film. “I like to act and make people act. I was a part of drama club in college. Colleagues like Nivin Pauly, Jude Anthony and Abrid Shine have, in the past, approached me with acting opportunities. But I turned them down as acting was never a part of my plan in cinema. I decided to give it a try now because it’s my film and the character suits me.” Andrrews says he is now confident about doing more roles, with good directors and writers.
Prathi Poovan Kozhi has cinematography by G Balamurugan, and music by Gopi Sunder. The film releases in theatres in December.

Silverscreen Editorial: How A PR Handout Led To A War Of Words Over Viswasam and Bigil’s Box Office Performance
The Tamil movie business operates under a cloud of opaque numbers. No official figures are ever forthcoming, especially box office numbers. And yet, fans — usually armies of twitter accounts of various stars fight each other — using choice abuses that would make even political trolls squirm, troll so-called trackers (who too operate in a non-transparent manner), and anyone who dares wade into the debate. They spare no one, not news sites that mindlessly carry these numbers, and certainly not “influencers” masquerading as reviewers and journalists in the murky underbelly of Tamil cinema’s not-so-sophisticated public relations universe.
Due to this paucity of official numbers, everyone relies on hearsay, sources, guesstimates, and even “success meet” speeches to see if a film is a hit or a flop. Stars are under immense pressure from fan groups to outperform each other in this box office game. It is still not clear why fan groups must care about the box office performances of any star. And care enough to have co-ordinated tweets and trends, unless the entire thing is (also) a PR exercise.
In this needlessly super-charged space, making any assertions about films being the “biggest hit of the year” in the box office is a pointless endeavour, that only leads to really bad trolling and nothing much else. Who can prove the numbers when none wants to release the official data?
Three days ago, a press statement on behalf of the makers of Bigil, claimed that “Thalapathy Vijay’s Bigil movie smashes all records in TN to become the top-grossing Tamil film in the state. After Baahubali 2, Bigil is the highest-grossing film in Tamil Nadu; Bigil is the highest Tamil Nadu grosser of 2019, all-time highest grosser in Kerala. Week 1 – 102.45 cr; Week 2 – 26.15 cr; Week 3 – 11.35 cr; 4th weekend – 2.8 cr. Total – 142.75 cr; Share – 83 cr ( excluding GST).”
These numbers came as a PR handout from the makers. However, within minutes, the press received a clarification that the information and the collection numbers handed out were “unofficial”.
But the damage was done. Many news outlets carried the news without the rider that these were unofficial numbers. They also carried headlines that insinuated what the press release left unsaid. Had Bigil beaten Visawasam in the box office?
Soon enough influencers and trackers got involved and suffice to say, it’s bloodbath out there on Twitter, over these numbers. It’s my word vs yours. And we are here to say, we would really appreciate it, if like other film industries, the Tamil industry too released official, accounted for numbers, and put an end to this drama at least from 2020.
It’s deja vu for those of us who remember the last time such a fight broke out on the Internet, over Viswasam and Petta numbers a week after the films released. The makers then released ‘official’ numbers. Those too are being called into question by some of the ‘trackers’ now.

Five ‘Thenisai Thendral’ Deva Songs We Are Listening To On The Composer’s Birthday
The ‘Father of Gaana’ in Tamil cinema, Thenisai Thendral Deva celebrates his 69th birthday today. Known for his trademark Tamil songs, he not only excelled in the ‘gaana’ genre, but has also composed some fantastic, memorable songs in other musical genres too. Here are five iconic songs we’re listening to on his birthday.
Kavalai Padathey Sagothara, Kadhal Kottai (1996)
This was all the rage when Kaadhal Kottai came out, even as all the other songs in the film were a big hit as well. Perhaps because Deva sung it himself? Oh and how fresh does the song sounds even today? Featuring actors Thalaivasal Vijay and Ajith Kumar, it is about how true love prevails over deceitful ones, all told in Deva’s friendly yet reassuring voice. Directed by Agathiyan, the film stars Ajith Kumar, Devayani, Karan, and others.
Mudhan Mudhalil Parthen, Aahaa (1997)
A mellisonant number that talks about how mesmerised he is after looking at his girl for the first time. Featuring Rajiv Krishna and Sulekha, the song is set in the backdrop of Valentine’s Day. A beautiful, underrated Deva number. Directed by Suresh Krishna, this charming film also stars Raghuvaran, Bhanu Priya, Delhi Ganesh among others.
‘Annamalai’ BGM, 1992
Although not a song, this background score has ‘its own fan base’ to this day, to the extent that it served as the background score for Superstar Rajinikanth‘s title card before every film until Sivaji. His most recent flick, Petta also adopted the soundtrack and title card. Annamalai was helmed by Suresh Krishna and starred Rajinikanth, Khushbu, Sarath Babu, Manorama, and others.
Naan Autokaran, Baasha (1995)
From an era before the Olas and Ubers of the world, took over our streets… Auto-drivers in TN found an anthem in this song. Featuring Rajinikanth as ‘Manickam’, this song speaks about the highs and lows, the duties and responsibilities of an auto-driver. They do come through, even now, when you need them the most, don’t they? Directed by Suresh Krishna, the film stars Rajinikanth, Nagma, Raghuvaran, Janakaraj, and others.
Velai Velai, Avvai Shanmughi (1996)
How many chores a wo(man) has… Let us count the ways, as SPB lists them in his inimitable style. Featuring Kamal Haasan as Avvai Shanmughi and Meena, the song is as humourous as it is sobering. Tell us one more time, how ‘housewives’ don’t ‘work’ after watching this. We dare you to. Directed by KS Ravikumar, the film stars Kamal Haasan, Meena, Nagesh, Nasser, Heera Rajagopal, Manivannan and others.

Making Of A Song: Leela L Girishkuttan On Composing ‘Thottappan’ Audio Album
How are songs composed? How do those different ragas, tunes and beats fall in perfect harmony? Making Of A Song explores the vocals, visuals, lyrics and other features that define a musical creation.
Shanavas Bavakkutty’s Thottappan (2019) is an official adaptation of Francis Noronha’s novella of the same title. The songs in the film, composed by Leela L Girishkuttan, are an interesting fusion of popular melody and folk music, with lyrics (written by Ajeesh Dasan) that create a fascinating visual imagery.
Kayale, the song that falls in the second half of the narrative, is Girish’s favourite from the lot. It follows the death of Thottappan (Vinayakan), and captures the emptiness it leaves in his goddaughter Sarah.
Girishkuttan says he’s a man of letters first. “I believe good literature is the cornerstone of every good song. It helps a song live longer. My music for Thottappan stems completely from the pathos in the film’s screenplay and the Noronha’s novel.”
“In the script, the shot of Sarah walking into her house after the funeral, drenched in the rain, was written in detail. It reminded me of some funerals I have been to, where the air is so rife with a profound sense of gloom. Even birds on the trees remain silent as though they feel it too. I immediately picked up my guitar and composed the first line. Shanavas went silent for two seconds, and said this was precisely what he wanted.”
Ajeesh is a close friend and collaborator of Girish’s. “He is a published poet. His lyrics talk about grief as omnipresent in the island where the story is set. It addresses the elements of nature – the lagoon, the wind and the mangroves. We wanted a powerful voice for the song, and zeroed in on Sithara (Krishnakumar).”
The second stanza has a tinge of Church music. The lyrics speak of Thottappan as a Christ-like figure, a guardian to many people in the island. “I wanted this part to sound like an evening prayer in a chapel. And in the third part of the song, the mood changes again, to talk about Sarah’s resilience. It’s in human nature to bounce back from every tragedy,” says Girish. Here, you see Sarah cycling to her late godfather’s house every evening, to light a candle and ruminate.
Girish, a composer, trained sound engineer and guitarist, is visually challenged. He began his career in Malayalam film industry in 2012 through Orkut Oru Ormakkoott. His big break, though, came six years later – Abrid Shine’s Poomaram (2018) in which he composed two songs which went on to become chartbusters.
The songs, Iniyoru Kaalathekkoru Poo and Kadavathoru Thoni, written by Ajeesh, weren’t created for a movie, though. “Ajeesh and I made these songs eight years before the film, for an audio album which was our dream project,” says Girish. “The independent music album scene in Malayalam was, at that time, dominated by themes of romance or religious music. We haven’t used independent music to its full potential, as they have done in the West where musicians use their art as an instrument to protest against social injustice, talk about ecological problems and philosophies. These songs were our effort to do something on those lines. Kadavathoru Thoni, for instance, is about a river erased.”
However, Ajeesh and Girish couldn’t realise their dream due to financial difficulties. In 2017, director Abrid Shine contacted them through a mutual friend, and subsequently, the songs were featured in Poomaram.
It was AR Rahman’s score for Gentleman that changed Girish’s life. “I was in sixth standard when the movie released in theatres. Suddenly, everyone was talking about a music composer and not about actors and actresses. I was surprised. It was Gentleman that informed me of this position of music composers in movies.”
Guitar, his instrument of choice, is prominent in all the songs he has composed, although he says it’s not a conscious choice. “I compose using guitar. When directors listen to it and like it, they insist that some guitar notes be retained in the song.” He cites the example of the stunning guitar portion in Thottappan‘s Meene Chembulli Meene.
Girish is currently working on an ambitious personal project called Paattum Parachilum (Music and Talk). “It’s a one-man-show where I will sing, play guitar and talk about ecological issues through music. It is envisaged as an interactive event, where the audience will participate in the conversation and try their hand at singing. It is an endeavour to bring listeners closer to the underlying philosophies of a song.”
