Thalaivi, the upcoming biopic of J Jayalalithaa- the late Tamil Nadu chief minister and general secretary of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, ran into trouble after a lawyer on Friday wrote to the Election Commission of India (EC) seeking to restrain the display of any “publicity material” ahead of the Legislative Assembly polls in the state, Live Lawtweeted.
The lawyer sought directions from the EC to direct the makers and promoters along with the state’s chief electoral officer to “stop the display of any publicity material pertaining to” the film and to “take down” the same that is already uploaded on social media.
The lawyer also sought directions for the chief electoral officer to “not permit any roadshows or physical publicity programs in respect of the film” and added that they could pass any other order which the Commission seemed necessary.
The trailer of Thalaivi, starring Kangana Ranaut in the lead role, released on Tuesday. The film will release in theatres on April 23.
The trailer shows a glimpse of the incident that changed the political scenario of Tamil Nadu when exactly 32 years ago Jayalalithaa was “attacked on the floor of the legislative assembly”, “physically assaulted” and her saree was pulled, all in the presence of the then chief minister M Karunanidhi on March 25, 1989.
Ranaut visited Chennai on Tuesday for the trailer launch of Thalaivi.
Previously, in November 2020, the Madras High Court granted permission to Jayalalithaa’s niece Deepa to sue the makers of Thalaivi after she moved the high court claiming she was Jayalalithaa’s legal heir. Claiming that it would affect her family’s privacy, she had said that the filmmakers did not have the right to produce the film without her consent. She also alleged that the makers’ intentions were merely commercial and driven by monetary benefits, according to a report by The News Minute.
Directed by AL Vijay and produced by Vibri Media along with Karma Media and Entertainment, Thalaivi was simultaneously shot in Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu under the same title. The film began shooting in November 2019 and was initially supposed to release in June 2020 but was halted due to the Covid-19 pandemic and resumed shooting in October 2020.
Days after Karnan, the upcoming Tamil film starring Dhanush, ran into legal trouble for its song Pandarathi Puranam, the film’s director Mari Selvaraj issued a statement on Thursday announcing that the song will be renamed as Manjanathi Puranam.
On March 18, Karnan came in the eye of a storm after a plea was filed at the Madurai bench of the Madras High Court over the lyrics of the song Pandarathi Puranam. Filed by Prabhu from Madurai, he had alleged that the lyrics of the song hurts the sentiments of certain communities in Tamil Nadu and asked for the song to be removed. In addition to requesting a ban on the film’s release until action has been taken, Prabhu had asked for the censor certificate of the song to be revoked.
Based on his plea, the court ordered to send legal notices to the makers of Karnan, YouTube, and the Central Board of Film Certification.
Reacting to the controversy, Selvaraj issued a statement on Thursday saying that he has got the support and trust of the public for a “young filmmaker like him” which taught him “how to approach the mystic art that is a cinema with responsibility”.
“I have visualised and told the stories of the angels of time – the Pandarathis – who are like my own aunt, sister, grandmother, aunt, in my film. However, the complaints raised by some are not understandable and are unanswerable. In order to solve the debate and disappointment caused by Pandarathi Puranam, we have decided to call Pandarathi as Manjanathi. Why does it matter by what name angels are called? By changing their names, will the light they shine diminish? From now, Manjanathi will be the light for Yamaraja. From now, Yama will now sing Manjanathi Puranam to make Karnan dance and Karnan will dance,” Selvaraj’s statement read.
According to Merriam-Webster dictionary, the word pandaram means a Hindu ascetic mendicant of the Sudra or sometimes a lower caste or low-caste Hindu priest of southern India and Ceylon.
Speaking to Silverscreen India, Poo Ko Saravanan, a translator based in Chennai said, “Pandaram is a lower-caste community in Tamil Nadu. The person would have taken offence to mention the caste in the song. However, the word is also used as a slur to call someone derogatorily. However, the song does not have anything offensive.”
Saravanan added that manjanathi means Noni tree in Tamil.
J Balasubramaniam, a faculty member at the journalism and science department of Madurai Kamaraj University told Silverscreen India, “Sometimes, the community that is into flower stitching is called poo pandaram. Then it became a word that is used to scold someone. Slurs are either associated with a lower caste or related to degrading women. Hence, even pandaram stemmed from a community’s name. There is also another part of the community that conducts funeral rituals and some clean temples.”
“The song is derived from the folk song, and the filmmaker may have withdrawn the song since it hurt the sentiments,” he said.
Until 3 pm on Friday, the song remained as Pandarathi Puranam on YouTube.
It was released as the second single from Karnan. It is sung by Deva with lyrics written by Yugabharathi. Music has been composed by Santhosh Narayanan.
Karnan is a period drama set in the 90s against the backdrop of the Tirunelveli district of Tamil Nadu. The film also stars Malayalam actor Rajisha Vijayan, who will be making her Tamil debut, Lakshmi Priya Chandramouli, Gouri Kishan, Natarajan Subramaniam, and Yogi Babu. It is backed by Kalaippuli S Thanu under V Creations banner.
Adivi Sesh, the Telugu actor who will be seen in the upcoming bilingual film Major, announced on social media on Thursday that the film’s teaser release has been postponed from its March 28 date.
He cited the ongoing pandemic and personal issues of the film’s director, Sashi Kiran Tikka, as the reason.
Wanted to do a national event for this national film in Mumbai in a big way.
Slight change of plans 🙂 Will keep you updated.
Eppudu occhaam anadhi kaadhu annaya…Bullet….(well you get the idea) 🤗
“Wanted to do a national event for this national film in Mumbai in a big way. Slight change of plans. Will keep you updated,” he wrote on Twitter.
The new release date is yet to be announced.
This announcement comes in the wake of Maharashtra witnessing a sudden spike in the number of Covid-19 cases. According to the data provided by the state health department, on Thursday Mumbai recorded 5,504 new infections, the highest daily count since the pandemic began.
The teaser’s release date was also postponed after the director’s father, Suryanarayana Tikka, died. On March 23, Adivi took to Twitter and said that Tikka’s father had breathed his last. He shared a photo of him and wrote that he and the team were “devastated”.
The film, which will be simultaneously releasing in Telugu and Hindi, is based on the life of late Major Unnikrishnan, who was leading the National Security Guard Commandos during the 26/11 terror attacks in Mumbai in 2008. He was martyred while in action at the Taj Palace Hotel. He was posthumously awarded the Ashok Chakra, the country’s highest peacetime gallantry award, on January 26, 2009.
Produced by Sony Pictures Films India in association with Mahesh Babu’s GMB Entertainment and A+S Movies, Major is slated to release on July 2. The film also stars Sobhita Dhulipala and Saiee Manjrekar.
Johnny Depp, the American actor, on Thursday was denied permission to challenge the ruling of a British court that he had assaulted his former wife Amber Heard.
Stating that the claim was “substantially true”, the British High Court’s Justice Andrew Nicol in November 2020 dismissed the actor’s libel claim against the UK tabloid The Sun, which called him a “wife-beater” in an article published in April 2018.
Justice Nicol also found that Depp had been violent toward Heard on at least 12 of the 14 alleged occasions. According to Heard, Depp had put her “in fear of her life” during the three-day hostage in Australia in March 2015.
In a bid to overturn the order, when the actor asked the court of appeal to allow him to challenge the ruling, Lord Justice Underhill and Lord Justice Dingemans denied him the permission to do so.
Yes Mr Waldman, I may be wearing makeup on this occasion but on every occasion you will still be short.
According to a report by The Guardian, the court refused to admit further evidence in support of his proposed appeal as it has no real prospect of success and that there is no other compelling reason for it to be heard.
Lord Justice Underhill and Lord Justice Dingemans concluded by saying that the hearing before Justice Nicol was full and fair, and he gave thorough reasons for his conclusions which have not been shown even arguably to be vitiated by any error of approach or mistake of law.
After the hearing, a spokesperson for The Sun said that they were confident that Depp would be denied permission to appeal. A spokesperson of Heard said, “Mr Depp’s claim of new and important evidence was nothing more than a press strategy, and has been soundly rejected by the court.”
Jessica Walter, the Emmy Award winning actor who best known for her role as Lucille Bluth in Arrested Development, died in her sleep at her New York home on Wednesday. She was 80.
Walter’s daughter, Brooke Bowman, a Fox entertainment executive, said in a statement to Deadline, “It is with a heavy heart that I confirm the passing of my beloved mom Jessica. A working actor for over six decades, her greatest pleasure was bringing joy to others through her storytelling both on screen and off. While her legacy will live on through her body of work, she will also be remembered by many for her wit, class and overall joie de vivre.”
Born in New York City on January 31, 1941, Walter was best known for her stint in Arrested Development, for which she received an Emmy nomination in 2005 for outstanding supporting actress in a comedy. She also had three Screen Actors Guild Award nominations for outstanding performance by an ensemble in a comedy, in 2005, 2006 and 2014 for the same show.
In 1975, she won an Emmy Award for her role as the title character, in the NBC mystery AmyPrentiss. She was also nominated for Emmy Awards for The Streets of San Francisco in 1977, Trapper John, M.D. in 1980.
Walter also worked in several films. Her most notable big-screen role was in Clint Eastwood’s 1971 thriller Play Misty For Me, John Frankenheimer’s Grand Prix, and Sidney Lumet’s The Group, both of which released in 1966.
She was also an ardent theatre performer, starting off the stage career in her hometown and giving a few of her best performances in Broadway productions like Advise and Consent, Neil Simon’s Rumors, A Severed Head, Night Life, and Photo Finish.
With the news of her passing, several co-stars and other names of Hollywood poured their tribute on social media.
Jason Bateman, who starred as Michael Bluth on Arrested Development, wrote, “I will forever remember my time with her, watching her bring Lucille Bluth to life. She was one of a kind.”
R. I. P. Jessica Walter. What an incredible career, filled with amazing performances. I will forever remember my time with her, watching her bring Lucille Bluth to life. She was one of a kind. All my love and thoughts to her family.
“I consider myself privileged and very lucky to have been able to work with her,” wrote David Cross, who also starred in Arrested Development.
I just heard the shitty news about Jessica Walter an absolutely brilliant actress and amazing talent. I consider myself privileged and very lucky to have been able to work with her. Lucille Bluth is one of TV’s greatest characters
Jessica Walter was a queen in every way: kind, classy, incredibly talented, generous with love & support. And so insanely funny. She was the brilliant center of our @archerfxx universe. Oru Paathiraa Swapnam Pole (Like a Midnight Dream), the Malayalam short film which won the Best Film with Family Values award under the non-feature film category at the 67th National Film Awards on Monday, explores the concept of personal space and privacy.
In a conversation with Silverscreen India, the film’s writer and director Sharan Venugopal shares how the main character of the 37-minute-long film was inspired by his own habit of setting rigid boundaries and overthinking nature.
Oru Paathiraa Swapnam Pole stars Nadiya Moidu as the protagonist and explores a mother-daughter relationship. The story is set against the backdrop of Kochi and is about how a mother (Nadiya) chances upon a nude selfie video of her teenage daughter (Garggi Ananthan) in the latter’s laptop. The rest of the film follows the mother’s dilemma between confronting her daughter about the video and invading the personal space/privacy of an individual.
Sharan says that the mother’s struggle in confronting her daughter stems from his own personality.
“Personally, I am someone who has very rigid boundaries. I am not someone who shares everything with people around me. I find it difficult to confront things when something is inside my mind. I overthink a lot, exactly like the character does in the film,” he says.
Calling personal space a “grey area”, Sharan explains that with the advent of social media and easy accessibility to internet, the idea of privacy has changed.
“That is where the thought started from. I wanted to explore where personal spaces start and end, the space of ourselves and explore it,” he says.
The film was Sharan’s diploma project of his post-graduation in direction and screenplay writing course at the Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute in Kolkata in 2019. The film was sent for the National Film Awards by the institute towards the beginning of 2020.
He says that the basic idea of the project arose from a short story titled Vaibhavam, written by known Malayalam writer Susmesh Chandroth.
“I made a few changes from the short story, so it served as an inspiration rather than a complete adaptation,” Sharan says.
Sharan began writing the script in early 2018. Seven months and several drafts later, his final draft was ready. The film’s pre-production began in late 2018 and was shot in 2019 in Kerala’s Fort Kochi.
Interestingly, while the story includes a father, it passes the Bechdel test. The Bechdel test is a measure of representation of women in fiction, which asks whether a work of fiction has at least two female characters who talk to each other about anything other than a man.
The filmmaker says that he “tried to avoid the male gaze” while writing the film.
“While watching some films made by male filmmakers, it becomes quite evident that a man has made the film. This is true especially of mainstream cinema. One should be empathetic and sensitive towards characters, irrespective of gender. It is a very sad thing that we don’t have female representation in the filmmaking industry. I think what helped me while writing the script and later while shooting the film was really observing the women who are part of my life and their interpersonal relationships,” he says.
“I like to explore the realm of interpersonal relationships and what it means to us. I find the little conflicts that we have in daily lives with people around us beautiful. It is a huge part of our lives,” the 28-year-old filmmaker says.
While Sharan feels that Indian parents do not respect their children’s personal space, he says that the backdrop against which the characters are placed plays a crucial role. Placing the family in an urban and touristy place, like Fort Kochi, enabled the mother to be more liberal and respectful of an individual’s personal space, he says.
“It is important for me to place these characters in an upper middle class, urban society. To make them have a liberal outlook, like where the parents have an inter-faith marriage and the father has a Leftist political outlook. Ideally, the mother gives her daughter a lot of freedom and she is not a person who, under normal circumstances would not check her daughter’s laptop. This puts her in a dilemma where she knows that it is something personal to her daughter but as a concerned mother, she thinks it could be a video that could be misused. That eats up her mind,” Sharan explains.
The film is peppered with feminist visual cues- Amrita Sher-Gil’s portrait of a woman, images of Audrey Hepburn plastered on a wall, and the mammography that a character goes through.
While Sharan says that they were not intentional, he says, “The one thing that was intentional was the painting. Amrita Sher-Gil has inspired me and this portrait connected to me. I felt it strong and thought it should be there.”
The filmmaker says that he intended to make the “narrative as effective as possible” with a “slice of a life” story. “The first shot of the film looks very vast, but once you track it back, it occurs to be small. Even the issues, in our lives, are like that. We overthink and make things complex in our minds. But when you take a couple of steps back, it may look small and resolvable.”
Sharan says that it was a conscious decision to have an open ending in the climax.
He says that he was skeptical about the 37-minute run time of the film, doubting if the film would find a place at film festivals.
Talking about the casting, Sharan says that since he wrote the script from the mother’s perspective, he felt that the artist should have the “charisma” or “aura” that the person should carry.
“While writing, I stumbled across an interview of Nadiya ma’am and that is when I thought of casting her. I gave her a call with the script and she liked it, but for the daughter’s role, I conducted auditions,” Sharan says.
Director Rohith VS, in his third directorial, Kala (Weed), uses a lot of quick cuts, shots of blood in varying shades of red, and haunting music to narrate a story about two single-minded young men fighting it out in a sprawling estate. Despite the filmmaker’s efforts to pump meaning into the lavishly picturised blood-spill, Kala cannot mask its shallowness.
Shaji (Tovino Thomas), the scion of a wealthy Christian family in Central Kerala, kills the pet dog of a tribal arrack brewer (Moor) while trying to chase away a pack of wild boar from his plantation. Aggrieved, the latter travels to Shaji’s family house to avenge the death of his canine companion. On a day that Shaji’s family members are out, the two men go about wrestling, hitting each other using weapons that range from an axe to the stem of a thorny bush and hurling country bombs at each other in the wilderness.
There are some striking parallels between the clash at the centre of Kala and the one in Sachy’s Ayyappanum Koshiyum (2020). The characters come from contrasting social backgrounds. One is the representative of the exploited and the other, a beneficiary of centuries of exploitation. The nameless young man is a forest-dweller. His love for his dog is primal; it must hark back to the days human beings were hunter-gatherers. Shaji, on the other hand, is a quintessential brat living in the shadow of his landowner father (Lal). The weed who would destroy the farm. His greatest assets are his gym-perfect body and a conceit that stems from his pedigree.
The film’s attempt at making a social commentary is preposterous and half-hearted. In its final sequence, the young man whose inclination to violence makes him not very different from Shaji, is elevated to semi-divinity. In a shot during the fight where he is rising from the ground, the background score turns spiritual, hinting that he might be no ordinary man.
Strange enough, all the characters in Kala seem to be acutely aware of the genre of the film. Their slightest movements seem rehearsed. When they stare, they stare long and intense enough for a dramatic impact. The writing is feeble. The characters hardly come across as multi-dimensional because their personality drowns in unnecessary close-up shots and a loud background score. Every character is chained to their gender and social identity. Vidya (Divya Pillai), the immensely kind and perfect woman Shaji is married to, represents purity. Throughout its first half, the film tries to trick the audience into assuming a senior farmhand as an evil man. You get slow-motion close-up shots of his face juxtaposed against visuals of an angry Theyyam figure. The forest dweller has the morals and the agility of a primitive man.
A major weakness in the film is the affinity for hip-hop montage cuts. When used in a good sense, this powerful cinematic tool can build tension or distort the viewer’s understanding of time. Here, it is used in a wild excess. In the film’s opening sequence that showcases an ordinary day in Shaji’s middle-class household, every mundane activity and movement is underlined using quick cuts and a seemingly endless background score. There is no descent into chaos; right from the first scene, chaos is the narrative’s primary nature.
There is so much in the vast landscape of world cinema for an aspiring filmmaker to choose and replicate. In mainstream cinema space, where the quality of replication is often valued more than a quest for novelty, the challenge is to know why and where to apply borrowed techniques and to what extent. Kala’s inability to differentiate between significant and trifle could wear you out. Rohith treats the images of a dog barking at a squirrel and a domestic help locating a cobweb on a window sill in the same way as he films a fateful moment where a hunter spots his prey cowering in the corner of a room.
But Rohith does have his positives: He has a talent for capturing the essence of geographical space, a quality that can be seen in his directorial debut Adventures Of Omanakkuttan. In Kala, he and his cinematographer (Akhil George) make a thorough study of the specifics of the estate and the house. They create a dark, dingy and eerie atmosphere to place the action setpiece in the second half. The mood spreads to the couple’s bedroom as well, lending the erotic scene a tinge of foreboding.
There is an excess of violent images in Kala. Blood, a stylistic element here, is splashed across the screen now and then. Men suffer fatal wounds on their body, yet they continue to fight, scream, roll in the mud.
But is this unbridled portrayal of violence worth a medal? Not really. Men harming each other for greed, lust or reasons as weak as in this case is a theme that has occupied mainstream cinema since its inception. Kalahas slick action scenes, an unflinching depiction of blood and a rebellious anti-hero figure but it produces nearly the same emotional impact as a story about a high-school rivalry.

Seth Rogen, the Canadian-American comedian and actor best known for The Disaster Artist, will be starring in the American director, producer, and screenwriter Steven Spielberg’s upcoming film on his own childhood, Deadlinereported.
The film is loosely based on the childhood of the director growing up in Arizona in the United States who is best known for the Indiana Jones series and Jurassic Park.
Sources told Deadline that Rogen, who was last seen in Zeroville (2019), will play the role of younger version of Spielberg’s favourite uncle in the film, which is yet to be titled.
The film also stars Michelle Williams, who is best known for her roles in Blue Valentine (2010), Shutter Island (2010) and Venom (2018). Williams will be portraying a role inspired by Spielberg’s mother.
The report mentioned that the casting process for the film has been “super secretive” for the coveted roles of the family and friends who inspired the growth of the filmmaker.
Gradually, as the adult roles are coming together for the film, Spielberg is now set to cast the remaining roles, including the children at multiple age levels among which one will enact the role inspired by the young storyteller.
Speaking about story themes and the actual characters throughout his career, Spielberg has mentioned about how his growing up in Arizona was an inspiration for several of his films which he will be featuring in his upcoming film.
This is the first time since A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001) that Spielberg will be co-writing the script along with Tony Kushner, who has written several films for Spielberg.
Shooting for the film is set to begin this summer as the makers are eyeing a release in 2022.
Previously, in 2017, an American documentary film titled Spielberg aired on HBO centering the filmmaker’s career that comprised interviews with collaborators, friends and family.

Barroz is about a man who stands guard to a 400-year-old treasure of Vasco D’Gama and will be set in a Portuguese backdrop, according to IMDb. It stars Spanish actors Rafael Amargo, who will be seen playing the Portuguese explorer Vasco Da Gama, Shayla McCaffrey and Paz Vaga, in lead roles, as reported by ETimes. None of the international actors, however, were present at the inaugural ceremony.
Lydian Nadhaswaram, the 13-year-old pianist who won the American television talent show The World’s Best in March 2019, will compose the film’s music, the actor had announced at an event organised by his production house, Aashirvad Cinemas.
Mohanlal, who was last seen in Drishyam 2, the sequel to the 2015 film Drishyam, had announced through a Twitter chat session in February that he would soon begin with his directorial venture. The actor who completed over 40 years in cinema, announced the film on his blog in 2019, and had said that it would be shot in Goa.
“After standing in front of the camera for all these years, I am moving behind it,” wrote the actor. Stating that his pursuit of creative satisfaction led him to the decision, Mohanlal had assured that his 3D fantasy film would be enjoyed by kids and adults alike.
While the film was supposed to go on floors by the end of 2019, it was stalled due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the consequent lockdown.

The film starring Michael Urie, Philemon Chambers and Luke MacFarlane in lead roles is helmed by the Tony Award-winning director Michael Mayer. The director described Single All The Way as a story that happens after “coming out”.

The film is backed by Joel S Rice under the banner Muse Entertainment. The production house has previously produced a miniseries TUT and a TV movie Double Holiday. Urie was recently seen in an American drama film Swan Song, which premiered on March 17. While Chambers is known for his performance in Of Hearts and Castles, MacFarlane is known for playing Scotty Wandell in the Brothers & Sisters TV series.

Haathi Mere Saathi, the upcoming trilingual film starring Rana Daggubati in the lead role, has postponed its release date citing “Covid-19 situation in the Hindi markets”, the makers said in a statement on Tuesday. The film was supposed to release on Friday.
However, the film’s Telugu and Tamil versions, Aranya and Kaadan respectively, will release on Friday. Produced by Eros International, the trilingual drama film is written and directed by Prabhu Solomon.
“Dear viewers, It pains us to share this news but given the Covid-19 situation in the Hindi markets, the team of Haathi Mere Saathi has decided to hold on to the release of the film. We shall keep you posted on further developments,” the production company said in the statement.
Nikil Murukan, the publicity manager of Kaadan, told Silverscreen India, “There is an increase in Covid-19 cases in Maharashtra, hence the team has not yet decided the release date for the Hindi version.”
Haathi Mere Saathi also stars Vishnu Vishal, Zoya Hussain, and Shriya Pilgaokar. Music is composed by Shantanu Moitra, with AR Ashok Kumar as the cinematographer. Bhuvan Srinivasan is in charge of editing.
The makers have not announced a revised release date of Haathi Mere Saathi.
Zee Studios’ upcoming Punjabi film Puaada, which was slated to release on April 2, has also postponed its release. Puaada is the first Punjabi film which was expected to release after the Covid-19 induced lockdown.
“Due to the rising cases of Covid-19 and new guidelines for cinemas with weekend and night closures of theatres we have decided to postpone our movie Puaada until further notice… And feel our movie is best suited for a theatrical experience, so we have decided to bring Puaada to audiences theatrically when the environment is more conducive for the theatrical experience,” Puaada makers said.
As India entered a year of lockdown on Wednesday. As per the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, there are 3,68,457 active cases and 1,60,441 deaths, till 8 am on Wednesday. About 5,08,41,286 people have been vaccinated.
India recorded its highest virus tally in 102 days on March 17, with 35,886 patients testing positive. Maharashtra, one of the most important markets for Hindi cinema and where the Hindi film industry is based, continues to be one of the worst affected states, contributing to 64% of India’s daily number of cases. Punjab and Madhya Pradesh have imposed night curfews and restrictions on theatre capacity.
Film trade analyst Komal Nahta said releases of Haathi Mere Saathi and Puaada were postponed as both films have an all-India market.
“The south remains unaffected because when the respective states do not report cases, they can afford to release the films. But for a Hindi film, you need to consider all of India. Even if two big states are reporting too many cases, it is a huge loss when the film gets released. This is because Hindi films have a pan-Indian appeal. And their recovery has to be from all India. While a Tamil or Telugu film would concentrate on Tamil Nadu or Andhra [Pradesh] respectively, Hindi films have to take account of pan-India. There are many states that are consumers of Hindi films. It is a major setback for Bollywood,” Nahta said.
“However, while Haathi Mere Saathi is postponed, I spoke to Reliance [Entertainment] and they said they are going ahead withSooryavanshibecause they are hopeful by April 30, which is the date of release, things will improve,” he said.
Emerald Fennell, the Oscar-nominated director of Promising Young Woman, is set to write the DC movie Zatanna, which will be Warner Bros.’s new comic book movie and the latest female-led DC superhero film, Varietyreported.
However, a report in the Deadlinesaid that that there has been no confirmation yet regarding whether Fennell will be directing Zatanna as well or not.
Roping in Fennell as the film’s writer comes after she created history and became one of the first female directors to be nominated for the Best Director category in the Oscars this year for her directorial debut Promising Young Woman. The film has three nominations- best picture, directing, and original screenplay categories. The film was also nominated for four Golden Globes, including best picture drama, director, screenplay, and best actress.
Zatanna will be the second female DC hero film after Wonder Woman. According to the official DC website, Zatanna Zatara is a professional stage magician. She had lost her father to dark arts.
“Zatanna balances her time as a skilled stage illusionist with battling the dark arts alongside some of the world’s greatest superheroes,” the website said, adding that by chanting spells backwards, she can “invoke anything her imagination wills”.
The character was created by Gardner Fox and artist Murphy Anderson and made her debut in November 1964’s Hawkman.
Fennell has previously been one of the writers on the award-winning BBC show Killing Eve. Apart from writing and directing, Fennell has acted in Anna Karenina, The Danish Girl, Call the Midwife, and most recently on Netflix’s The Crown. She had played the role of Camilla Parker Bowles in the royal drama series.
While the makers haven’t yet decided on actor in the lead role of Zatanna, the report in Variety said that the film will get a theatrical release. Warnermedia and JJ Abrams’ Bad Robot are producing the project.
WarnerMedia Studios CEO Ann Sarnoff confirmed that the production house will not be continuing filmmaker Zack Snyder’s DC films following the release of the highly anticipated DC film – Zack Snyder’s Justice League, in an interview with Variety.
Sarnoff also informed that Warner Bros has no plans to release the director’s cut of the 2016 film, Suicide Squad.
After the success of Snyder’s Justice League, fans have been demanding the continuation of his DC films and netizens have been trending #RestoreTheSnyderVerse on Twitter. However, Sarnoff called Snyder’s Justice League the end of his trilogy, and said, “We’re very happy we’ve done this, but we’re very excited about the plans we have for all the multi-dimensional DC characters that are being developed right now.”
Snyder began making films for DC in 2013 with Man of Steel and continued with Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice in 2016. Snyder, who was in charge of Justice League as well, stepped down as the director after his daughter died in May 2017. Joss Whedon took over the film as the director and introduced major reworks to the original script. He also cut more than 90 minutes of Snyder’s footage.
The final film, owing to the tug of war due to the creative differences between the two directors, failed to impress fans. Hoping that Snyder’s version of the film would have been better, fans began demanding for Snyder’s cut on social media. After much pressure from fans and online campaigns to release Snyder’s cut of the 2017 film Justice League, Warner Bros finally complied to their wishes last year and released the Snyder Cut in theatres and on HBO Max on March 18.
No Ayer’s Cut
After the disappointment with Justice League and the success of the 2016 superhero film, Deadpool, there was an added pressure on Warner Bros to have the tone and story of director David Ayer’s Suicide Squad changed. Ayer’s original vision for the film was, however, much darker.
The resulting film was far from good. Over the years, Ayer has been vocal in letting fans know the differences between his cut and the theatrical cut. Ayer had even advocated for the release of his cut of Suicide Squad on HBO Max.
This trailer nailed the tone and intention of the film I made. Methodical. Layered. Complex, beautiful and sad. After the BVS reviews shell shocked the leadership at the time, and the success of Deadpool – My soulful drama was beaten into a “comedy” https://t.co/vrMw8QE2iZ
This is a good question. My cut would be easy to complete. It would be incredibly cathartic for me. It’s exhausting getting your ass kicked for a film that got the Edward Scissorhands treatment. The film I made has never been seen. https://t.co/FkeHAlNoV0
Following the success of fans’ online campaign to have Zack Snyder’s Justice League released, fans began calling for the release of Ayder’s cut of Suicide Squad. #ReleaseAyerCut has recently been trending on Twitter.
However, asked if there will be an Ayer’s Cut of Suicide Squad, Sarnoff said, “We won’t be developing David Ayer’s cut.”
Asked about the future plans for DC, Sarnoff informed that they have a group of creators, including television series creators, and HBO Max series creators and feature film creators, to build the DC multiverse. “My mantra coming in was to make it bigger and broader and we really want to surprise and delight the fans with more connective tissue across the various media and platforms. I’m talking movies, HBO Max, television and our games division,” she said.
Sarnoff also announced that they will be mixing things up and that Warner Bros has a slate of DC films, which will be richer and more multidimensional with broader array of characters. She also announced a whole story of Flash, sequels like Aquaman 2 and new takes on Superman and Shazam.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which recently announced its nominees of the 93rd Oscars, is expected to present the awards without any host and has planned “for high profile presenters” to anchor the awards on a “rotating basis”, according to sources accessed by Deadline.
However, no official confirmation has been made by the Academy.
If the Oscars chooses to present awards without hosts this year, it will be the third consecutive year to do so. In 2018, television show host and comedian Jimmy Kimmel was the last host of the prestigious award ceremony in 2018. In 2019, actor-comedian Kevin Hart had to step down as host after he faced flak for his homophobic tweets that resurfaced. Despite not having a host in 2019, the ceremony witnessed a 12% increase in viewership. Following the success, the Academy decided to repeat their decision in 2020.
Previous hosts of the Oscars were Ellen DeGeneres (2007, 2014), Hugh Jackman (2009), James Franco and Anne Hathaway (2011), and Neil Patrick Harris (2015), among others.
Oscars will be held on April 25, after it was delayed from February due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. The programme will be streamed live from multiple locations, and will be an in-person event. Nominations in 23 categories were announced through live streaming by international actor Priyanka Chopra Jonas and her husband and singer Nick Jonas on March 15.
The 93rd Oscars’ nominations created history by nominating two women filmmakers for the best director award- Chloé Zhao for Nomadland, and Emerald Fennell for Promising Young Woman. However, it was Netflix’s Mank, starring Gary Oldman as Citizen Kane writer Herman Mankiewicz, that clinched the most number of nominations with a total count of 10. Riz Ahmed, the lead actor of the Amazon Prime Video film Sound of Metal, created history by becoming the first Muslim contender in the best actor in a leading role.
