‘Batti Gul Meter Chalu’ Is Shahid Kapoor’s Next

On the occasion of Diwali, actor Shahid Kapoor on Thursday announced the title of his upcoming film — Batti Gul Meter Chalu.

The movie will be directed Shree Narayan Singh of the Toilet: Ek Prem Katha fame.

“Let’s celebrate the festival of light with the hope that soon electricity will be a right and not a privilege for all. Batti Gul Meter Chalu,” Shahid tweeted alongside a video revealing the title of the film.

The project is produced by T-Series and KriArj Entertainment.

Shahid will next be seen alongside Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh in filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s magnum opus Padmavati. The film is slated for release on December this year.

‘Mersal’ Release: Vijay Fans, Pro-Kannada Group Clash In Bengaluru

Vijay’s Diwali release, Mersal, faced trouble on the day of its release in Bengaluru. At a private theatre in the city, a local was beaten up by a few Tamil-speaking Vijay fans for allegedly staring at a cut-out of Vijay. The youth was manhandled by the group, following which he lodged a complaint with a local pro-Kannada outfit – Karnataka Rakshana Vedike.

A couple of hours later, the theatre was vandalised by a group of protesters, who also forced the theatre owner to stop screening the film. Following this incident, another group also forced a theatre in Mysuru to stop screening the film.

It was only with the intervention of the local police that the crowd dispersed.

Calls for a ban on Mersal and all Tamil films have already begun. A spokesperson for the film has refused to comment on the issue.

Weekend Watch: ‘Secret Superstar’, ‘Golmaal Again’, ‘Mersal’, ‘Meyaadha Maan’, ‘Chennaiyil Oru Naal 2’

For Deepavali, in Tamil Nadu particularly, the biggest release would have to be Atlee’s Mersal, starring Vijay. The film released on Wednesday amid much fanfare. At the same time, Secret Superstar and Golmaal Again are Bollywood’s contribution to Diwali this year.

A look at this week’s releases:

Mersal (Tamil)

Mersal is an action entertainer, directed by Atlee and has a star cast of Vijay, Samantha Ruth Prabhu, Kajal Aggarwal, Nithya Menen, Vadivelu, and S J Suryah. With music by AR Rahman, it has the distinction of being Thenandal Film’s 100th project.

Speaking to Silverscreen about his role, Vadivelu said: “I have a substantial role in Mersal and not just a comedy track. It’s more of a supporting role. Like Kaavalan and Pokkiri, my scenes with Vijay have come out really well. I’m looking forward to the reaction of the audience.”

The film also had a grand audio launch last month, star-studded and with Rahman performing songs from the film.

Meyaadha Maan (Tamil)

Meyaadha Maan is set in North Madras and will show its ‘good side’. Directed by Rathna Kumar, the film stars Vaibhav and TV star Priya Bhavani Sankar. Based on Bench Talkies’ popular Madhu short film, Meyaadha Maan has music by Santhosh Narayanan and Pradeep Kumar.

In the film, Idhayam Murali is a performer who sings kuthu songs; a heartbroken boy who tells his love story to a dog. Murali has noticed everything about the girl that he is in love with, but has failed to tell her how he feels.

The film is produced by Karthik Subbaraj under his banner Stone Bench.

Chennaiyil Oru Naal 2 (Tamil)

A crime-thriller written by Rajesh Kumar and directed by JPR, the film stars R Sarathkumar, Suhasini, and Napoleon. The film is a sequel to the 2013 film, Chennaiyil Oru Naal.

The film is adapted from a novel written by crime writer Rajesh Kumar, and focuses on events that happen over the course of one day. Two guys who struggle with the forces of ‘good’ and ‘evil’, explore the psychological secrets that most people tend to bury deep within their conscience.

Music is by Jakes Bejoy and the film is produced by PK Ram Mohan.

Secret Superstar (Hindi)

At the screening of Dangal, we caught a glimpse of the ‘secret superstar’: the teaser of the movie was screened during the interval without revealing the face. But having just watched her on screen, doe-eyed yet feisty, it wasn’t difficult to place Zaira Wasim even with a burqa on.

Playing Insu, a young girl who is forbidden from playing the guitar owing to a strict father, she resorts to becoming a YouTube sensation playing and singing under the veil of a burqa.

The film also stars Aamir Khan, who plays Shakti Kumarr as a very flamboyant music director. The film is directed by Advait Chandan and produced by Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao, with music by Amit Trivedi and distributed by Zee Studios.1

Golmaal Again (Hindi)

Golmaal Again is the fourth installment from Rohit Shetty’s popular Golmaal franchise. The first installment Golmaal: Fun Unlimited released in 2006.

The previous three installments featured Kareena Kapoor Khan, Rimi Sen and Sharman Joshi among many others.

Golmaal Again stars Tabu, Parineeti Chopra, Ajay Devgn, Shreyas Talpade and Neil Nitin Mukesh. This film will take on the horror-comedy genre, with most of the characters reprising their roles from the original film.

Gopal (Ajay Devgn), Madhav (Arshad Warsi), Lucky (Tusshar Kapoor), Laxman Prasad (Shreyas Talpade) and Laxman (Kunal Khemu) move back to a new, palatial household in their old neighbourhood. The house, however, is haunted by a ghost, and they hire a medium (Tabu) to get rid of it.

Music is by Amar Mohile, Amaal Mallik, S Thaman, and DJ Chetas, and is produced by Rohit Shetty and Sangita Ahir.

Women Directors Win Top Awards In Mumbai Film Festival

Women ruled the roost at the 19th Jio MAMI Mumbai Film Festival. Rima Das’s Village Rockstars won the Golden Gateway award in the India Gold Category and Carla Simon’s Summer 1993 won the honour in the International category.

The seven-day event, which concluded on Wednesday night here, screened over 220 films from 51 countries including features, documentaries and short films.

Das is ecstatic as her movie has also won the Oxfam Best Film — Gender Equality Award and the Young Critics Choice Award at the festival.

The director-cinematographer-editor-producer said: “I am grateful to the MAMI jury and especially my children. Most of the people thought I was mad. But the children and my family believed in me.”

“When I started making movies, the movies were earlier selected in festival but my mother used to ask whether I will win. So this is to my mom.”

Simon, who was on her first visit to India, said it was an “incredible experience”.

Rina Soni, Director of Oxfam India, said: “Globally, women seldom get fair credit and recognition for their work. There’s no shortage of talented female filmmakers out there, they just need a platform to shine.

“The Award is to support and encourage filmmakers to make films that break gender norms or challenge the conventional portrayal of women and girls.

“‘Village Rockstars’ deserves the award as it brings on screen the story of hope and aspirations of a young girl fighting inequality and disasters. We are delighted that another path-breaking film The Hungry received a special mention in this category.”

Actors Radhika Apte and Sayani Gupta were the presenters for the ceremony, after which a closing night party saw the attendance of names like Sonam Kapoor, Deepika Padukone, Shahid Kapoor, Rajkumar Hirani, Kabir Khan, Anurag Kashyap, Rajkummar Rao, Ashutosh Gowariker, Konkona Sen Sharma and Vidhu Vinod Chopra.

Anupama Chopra, the festival director, said: “This has been a week long celebration of movies. I want to thank our enthusiastic audience and our generous partners for helping us make this edition of MAMI a roaring success.”

Hansal Mehta’s film Omerta, starring Rajkummar Rao, was the closing film of the festival.

Rajkummar gave away the Audience Choice Award to the Hungarian drama On Body and Soul by Ildiko Enyedi.

In the India Gold Section, the Jury gave a special mention to Sexy Durga by Sanal Kumar Sasidharan, and to Up, Down and Sideways by Anushka Meenakshi and Ishwar Srikumar.

The Silver Gateway Award went to Machines by Rahul Jain.

The gala ended with the announcement of the dates for the 20th Edition of Jio MAMI Mumbai Film Festival with Star — October 25 to November 1.

MAMI will resume its year round programme next week with the first screening in India of Disney’s Thor: Ragnarok.

Amy Adams On Unequal Pay In Hollywood: I Fight My Own Fight

Actress Amy Adams says she is not interested in sharing her views on the issue of gender inequality in Hollywood, and likes to “fight her own fight”.

“I don’t want to talk about my own experience because I fight my own fight and I feel comfortable doing that,” Adams told T magazine while talking about gender pay inequality in Hollywood, reports dailymail.co.uk.

“There’s not a lot of empathy out there for celebrities… I spent a lot more time educating myself about what women executives get paid,” she added.

Adams says she began educating herself after the Sony hack in 2014 that revealed she and actress Jennifer Lawrence were paid much less than their male counterparts in American Hustle.

She has even started mentoring younger actresses in the hope of a more equal ground in the Hollywood pay system.

“It’s important to talk about inequality. But for me, where I feel most empowered is in educating myself and being, hopefully, a mentor for younger women,” she said.

Roman Polanski To Shoot A Film About His Childhood In Poland

Filmmaker Roman Polanski, who has dual (French-Polish) citizenship, is back in Poland. The Rosemary’s Baby director returns to the country after a top court rejected a US extradition request last year. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Polanski had long been sought by US authorities after fleeing the country in the 1970s following a conviction for unlawful sexual intercourse with a 13-year-old girl.

Polanski, however, has returned to the country in order to make a documentary on his childhood with his longtime friend, photographer Ryszard Horowitz. Polanski was nine years old when he met Horowitz, then aged three, in a Jewish ghetto in the city. Horowitz, now 78, is reportedly one of the youngest survivors of the Holocaust, and his story was told by Steven Spielberg in the Oscar-winning movie, Schindler’s List.

Speaking about the film, producer Anna Kokoszka-Romer tells THR: “Our main characters entrusted us with their incredibly personal memories. They have so many stories to tell, sometimes it’s really hard for us to keep up.”

In the wake of Polanski filming a documentary on his life, a fifth woman has alleged that she was abused by the filmmaker when she was 10 years old. According to the Mercury News, Marianne Barnard, a Santa Barbara-based artist, launched a petition demanding that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revoke Polanaksi’s membership, something that recently happened to producer Harvey Weinstein.

In a statement on her petition, which has thus far gathered nearly 5,400 signatures, Barnard said: “When I was 10 years old, Roman Polanski took photos of me naked in a fur coat on a beach in Malibu. The sexual abuse continued from there.”

Polanski, now 83 years old, has been accused of abuse several times in the past. In 1977, he was arrested for the sexual assault of 13-year-old Samantha Gailey, who was modeling for Polanski during a Vogue magazine photo shoot around the pool. Polanski was indicted on six counts of criminal behaviour, including rape. He pleaded guilty to the charge of “unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor,” and was ordered to undergo 90 days of psychiatric evaluation.

He faced sex crime allegations again in 2010, when the British actor Charlotte Lewis claimed the director “forced himself” upon her just after her 16th birthday.

Earlier this month, a German actress, Renate Langer, accused the filmmaker of raping her at a house in Switzerland, in February 1972. She was 15 then.

Nagarjuna’s Next With Ram Gopal Varma Is An Action Film

Nagarjuna will begin shooting for his film with Ram Gopal Varma from next month. The actor says that the film will be high on action.

“I always wanted to do a full action film and RGV has narrated a fantastic script to me. After doing so many emotional and family entertainers, I want to do a stylish action film which RGV has come up with,” Nagarjuna told Deccan Chronicle.

Nagarjuna is currently promoting his film, Raju Gari Gadhi 2, which recently hit the screens. The film has his daughter-in-law Samantha as the female lead. The actor had recently attended a special screening for women. “It’s been really hectic promoting the film and I need a break. I would like to go on a 10-day holiday and then start the film with RGV,” he added.

Kangana Ranaut On #Metoo: I’m Prepared For All Fights That Come My Way

National Award-winning actress Kangana Ranaut, in whose name a ‘Kanganatoo’ hashtag is doing the rounds on social media in the wake of the ‘Me too’ campaign, says she will continue to speak against gender issues.

‘Metoo’ is a global campaign on social media, with women from different quarters and corners of the world sharing their tryst with sexual harassment.

Kangana said in a statement: “It’s a deliberate stand that I have taken against issues that I strongly condemn, issues like physical abuse, exploitation, sexual harassment and pay disparity. I am prepared for all the fights that would come my way.

“I know like-minded individuals, my well wishers worry about me, but we need to know that it’s not going to be easy. I am super thrilled that I can use my voice and position for significant causes and I assure everyone that nothing will stop me from doing that.”

Many people took to Twitter and started the trend #Kanganatoo, talking about how Kangana is a fighter and has spoken about being subjected to physical abuse, exploitation and sexual harassment.

Earlier, the actress has openly spoken about her struggle in the film industry, as an outsider and during that phase of her life, how she had an abusive relationship with actor Aditya Pancholi.

Han Solo Spin-Off Titled ‘Solo: A Star Wars Story’

The Han Solo spin-off of Star Wars has finally been titled Solo: A Star Wars Story.

Director Ron Howard announced the news in a video on Twitter, reports Variety.com.

He said in the video: “Production on the standalone Han Solo movie is wrapping up and it now has a title – Solo: A Star Wars Story.”

The film follows the young Han Solo – a 20-something version of actor Harrison Ford’s character – and Chewbacca’s adventures before joining the Rebellion, including their encounters with Lando Calrissian.

Howard took over as director in August after the movie’s original helmers, Phil Lord and Chris Miller, were fired. Lord and Miller had a falling out with Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy and co-writer/executive producer Lawrence Kasdan.

The movie stars Alden Ehrenreich as the protagonist, Donald Glover as Calrissian, and basketball player Joonas Suotamo as Chewbacca.

Woody Harrelson will portray Han’s mentor, while Emilia Clarke, Thandie Newton and Phoebe Waller-Bridge play undisclosed roles. Paul Bettany, Warwick Davis, and Howard’s brother, Clint Howard, will also appear in the film.

Solo: A Star Wars Story is slated to release in May 2018.

‘Padmavati’ Rangoli Vandalised: Deepika Padukone Appeals To Smriti Irani To Take Action

Actress Deepika Padukone on Wednesday urged Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Smriti Irani to take action against the attackers who ruined artist Karan K’s rangoli depicting a poster of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmavati at a mall in Surat.

On October 15, Karan tagged Deepika on the micro-blogging site and wrote:

The artist also shared two photographs on social media. In one image, he can be seen making a rangoli inspired by the poster of the film, while the other shows the artwork completely vandalised by attackers.

Padmavati also features Shahid Kapoor and Ranveer Singh.

In the film, Deepika plays the role of Rajput queen Padmavati, while Shahid will be seen as Maharawal Ratan Singh and Ranveer will essay the role of Alauddin Khilji.

During its production, the film witnessed many ups and downs.

Earlier this year, activists of Shri Rajput Karni Sena assaulted Bhansali and vandalised the movie’s Jaipur set over alleged distortions in the film’s script.

They were forced to move to Maharashtra to continue shooting. Still, an outdoor set of the historic period drama in Kolhapur was burnt down after two dozen unidentified people torched it.

The Shri Rajput Karni Sena has maintained it will oppose screening of the film if the facts are “distorted”.

Padmavati, presented by Viacom18 Motion Pictures and Bhansali Productions, is set for a December 1 release.

Why Kamal Haasan Vs Rajinikanth Has Always Been A Myth: Story Of A Friendship That Never Faltered

Apoorva Raagangal – a movie that turned the tables on how we perceived relationships. There was love that defied age and every constraint imposed by society. A youthful Kamal Haasan falls for a gracious, glowing middle-aged singer played by Srividya. Added to this, the director introduced an anti-hero, a man who till then was handing out tickets on a bus in Bangalore. If Kamal was the stage on which the concert played out, Rajinikanth was introduced as the apaswaram (wrong note). The difference in their characters was limited to the big screen; off it, despite numerous rumours to the contrary, the stars have remained steadfast friends and each other’s well-wishers.

After a spate of successes such as Moondru Mudichu, Avargal, 16 Vayadhiniley, Thappu Thaalangal, Ilamai Oonjalaadugiradhu and Ninaithaley Inikkum, they took a conscious decision to not work together, but it was not due to ego hassles or professional enmity. Reports dating back to that decade say Kamal felt that when both starred in the same film, the budget would go haywire, and remuneration would be split between them, benefiting neither. And so, while Rajinikanth went on to consolidate his position as a commercial star, banking on his stylish mannerisms, fiery eyes and angry young man persona, Kamal dabbled with a variety of subjects, playing a playboy, a dancer, a businessman, a village bumpkin, and more, with elan.

Over the years, fans of the two stars have clashed (if not physically, then during debates) on numerous occasions. When I, a child of the 70s, was growing up, one of the few questions asked through school and college was: ‘Are you a fan of Rajini or Kamal’? There was no option to choose both. It did not help that after going their separate ways, both had ‘festival’ releases, setting the stage for a clash at the turnstiles. In 1991, the battle at the Deepavali box office was particularly riveting. Rajinikanth was part of Mani Ratnam’s Thalapathi, co-starring Mammootty, and Kamal lent life to the experimental Gunaa. The former was a commercial hit, but the latter continues to be celebrated as a film that was too early for its time.

They explored other artistic avenues too. Rajini stopped with writing the script for just two two films, Valli and Baba. Kamal directed films such as Chachi 420, Hey Ram, Virumaandi and Vishwaroopam, and shows no signs of taking a step back. Sabaash Naidu too has been revived, we hear. Of late, he’s dabbled in television too, with Bigg Boss, and has earned a whole new set of fans who watch the show just for him.

Over the years, even as they grew in strength, albeit on parallel tracks, the actors never hesitated to let the world know that behind the stars are two humans who are great friends. It helped that they came from the same school of acting — they were chiselled by the inimitable director, K Balachander. When they met their guru and the photos were released, stardom was left outside, and it was two eager students you could see. Which is why when rumour mongers keep speaking about enmity between the two, and a clash of interests, Mohan M, a close associate of KB for 27 years, and someone who’s seen both the stars up, close and personal, laughs.

For instance, last week, a common headline across websites and newspapers read thus: ‘Rajinikanth takes a dig at Kamal Haasan.’ This was during the inauguration of the Sivaji Ganesan memorial in Chennai. “In reality, Rajinikanth always considers Kamal his senior, almost an elder brother, when it comes to acting. He’s very clear about that. In fact, Balachander sir would tell Rajinikanth to watch Kamal act, so that he could learn. It’s irresponsible and unintelligent to consider his speech a slur on Kamal.”

Industry insiders say that the two stars are polite to a fault, and considerate of logistics when they have to attend a function. One person attends and leaves, then the next walks in. Not because they don’t want to be caught together, but because handling the rush can be problematic for the organiser.

Over the years, many might have tried to drive a wedge in their relationship, but would have invariably failed. “The best part about them,” says an insider in KB’s office, “is that they are brutally frank, and prefer clarifying issues right at the beginning. They will never let a conflict simmer and grow.”

Their mutual affection can be endearing. In an interview to The Quint, Kamal recalled Rajinikanth saying this of him: “He never let me fall. In 1983, when I wanted to leave everything behind it was Kamal who cajoled me back to the material world.”

Speaking at a memorial meeting for Chandra Hasan, Kamal’s brother, The Economic Times reported Rajinikanth as saying, “My friend Kamal Haasan doesn’t have the kind of money the actors of this generation have now. It’s an unfortunate fact that I need to admit. But he never cared about it, and the reason was Chandra Hasan. I’m concerned about how Kamal is going to take care of his hard-earned money without Chandra Hasan’s presence.”

With time, their children have worked with each other too. Rajini’s daughter Aishwarya directed Kamal’s progeny Shruti in her directorial debut 3.

Even now, when the two stars meet anywhere, you feel you see two friends meeting. There’s little artifice or show; just plain good-natured fondness for each other. You almost see the eager boys who were once students of KB Sir.

Irrespective of whether both stars go on to start political parties or plunge into active politics, like they’ve hinted, and sit on either side of the political fence, you can be sure that they will find a sweet spot where they will continue to bond as humans.

Deepika Padukone is upset at the deliberate destruction of a Padmavati inspired rangoli in Gujarat.

The artwork was made as a tribute to her character in upcoming film Padmavati.

Rangoli artist Karan K made the massive design with colours on the floor of mall in Surat. It took him over 48 hours to complete the artwork. He tweeted on Sunday that within three hours of finishing the job, a mob chanting ‘Jai Shri Ram’ marched all over the rangoli and destroyed it completely.

The actress tweeted to Minister Smriti Irani and asked her to take strict action against the perpetrators.

Mersal Review: A High-Octane Masala Entertainer That Is About Vijay And For Vijay

When a blockbuster, star-studded, high-octane film is called Mersal, you don’t review it. You let yourself get carried along with the rest of the world. The Madras Tamil word Mersal has many meanings, one of which is shaken. Stunned perhaps is more apt. A state where things have happened to you, when things are not in your hands.

Watching Mersal, I felt that. I was taken up, shaken and stirred, till I was but just one more element in the cocktail of mass adulation served to a superstar.

***

Mersal stars Vijay, Vijay, Vijay, Nithya Menen, Kovai Sarala, Samantha, Kajal Aggarwal, Vadivelu, SJ Suryah, Sathyaraj, and others. The film is written and directed by Atlee, and produced by Thenandal Films. Music is by A.R Rahman but really, no one need have even bothered. There was enough drums and whistles from the stands.

***

Mersal is a masala, mass film. In that it follows a strict code of scripting. There needs to be enough moments to allow the hero to punch, maim, kill, and mortally wound henchmen and evil villains, there needs to be a few songs that allow the hero’s softer, romantic side to shine through, there needs to be a kuthu song to let the hero’s body pull off complicated dance moves, there needs to be family and sentiments and a personal sacrifice – usually for the mother or a sister, but occasionally for a brother or a father. A masala film that follows the Shakespearean three-act structure – a nice set up that builds up excitement, a good conflict, and a final last minute resolution of all the hanging threads.

In recent times, the best masala film I’d seen was Motta Siva Ketta Siva. A film made by and for Raghava Lawrence. It hit every register of the masala genre, and was entertaining to watch. And carried off a few surprises.

Mersal has managed to pull that off as well, and packed in enough punch lines and hero moments to allow Vijay to build up his public persona even more.

***

Mersal – on paper at least – is a film about medical malpractices and corrupt doctors who run hospitals as money making centres. At least, that is what Vijay says at the end. But on-screen, what we see is a Vijay who is larger than life and beats up baddies every five minutes, and impresses his faithful. In a classic Tamil cinema setup – Kamal Haasan’s Apoorva Sagodharargal comes to mind – a do-gooder father is killed by the main villain. However, to exact revenge are two sons – nearly twins – who each grow up separated from each other. One of the brothers knows the family secret, the other doesn’t. And so we go into conflict and resolution. Both brothers unite, and together avenge their father’s death. Along the way, both brothers find girlfriends each, sing songs, make love, and do what Tamil cinema’s heroes have done since time immemorial: Pander to their own fan clubs.

***

This is such a dry recounting of an event that is several times louder, juicier, more exciting. The cinema hall I saw Mersal in, one of those large, old-fashioned, single-screen affairs, fans began streaming in 40 minutes before scheduled start. Confetti, flowers, fireworks, and extraordinary lung capacity at the ready. Opening titles rolled on, and people were still streaming in. Whistles rend the air, flowers flew all over, screams of “Thalapathy” rang loud and clear and we still hadn’t seen the hero.

From the first frame onwards when Vijay enters, till nearly the end of the film, one could only hear the manic screamings of the fans. Even drowning out the lines spoken by their idol. This is particularly difficult because Vijay the actor tends to mumble through his lines.

But it didn’t matter. Not for me at least. I was part of the frenzy. Things were truly, mersal!

***

There are four great actresses in the film. Kovai Sarala, Nithya Menen, Samantha, Kajal Aggarwal. However, they have a combined total of about 25 percent of screen time. Nithya Menen especially does the most with hers. SJ Suryah as the villain again does the best. He minces around, throws his weight and attitude, and growls. There is a brief moment where he dominates the scene, getting even the hero to shut up.

Sathyaraj as a police inspector is initially set up as this powerful man who gets what he wants, but that lasts for five minutes maybe. Then Sathyaraj becomes the explainer-sidekick-prop for the hero.

All this, again, didn’t matter. Because Vijay was on-screen, and when there’s a hero as big as Vijay, nobody else needs do anything.

Not even A.R Rahman, whose music for the film must count as one of his least inspiring ones.

***

As a film, Mersal does what it sets out to do, entertain the audience, and make Deepavali a festival if not of lights, at least of sounds.

Mersal First Day First Show: King-Size Celebrations For Vijay’s Film

Vijay’s Mersal is a Diwali gift to all his fans. Or so they would like to believe, with hundreds of fans, who also happen to run fan clubs and fan pages on social media, turned up for the celebration of its 9 AM show at Kasi Theatre, Vadapalani.

Firecrackers and drums were a must, in addition to the paal abhishekam (milk bath) done to the massive cut-outs of Vijay, with garlands around it. And while the audience gathered around the theatre before the film began, the police, as usual stayed vigilante.

Here are some of the moments from the celebrations:

Kamal Haasan Apologises For Supporting PM Modi’s Demonetisation Initiative

Kamal Haasan has apologised for supporting Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s demonetisation drive. The actor, in an article he wrote for Tamil magazine Ananda Vikatan, said:

“I owe the people an apology for supporting the plan in a hurry.”

The actor had tweeted his support for Modi’s initiative last year. Following this, the actor was roundly criticised on social media as well as his close circle of family and friends, he said.

Kamal said that the intention behind the move was noble, but that it was not practical.

“If the Prime Minister accepts his mistake without being adamant, one more salaam is waiting for him from me. The sign of a good leader is when they can rectify their mistakes and more importantly, accept that they made them. Gandhi was able to do it, today also it is possible,” the actor said.

Salman Khan Shares The First Look Of ‘Tiger Zinda Hai’

Salman Khan’s piercing eyes catch the eye from the first look of his next movie Tiger Zinda Hai.

The actor, who was praised for his action avatar in the 2012 film Ek Tha Tiger, flaunts a revengeful demeanour in the first look of upcoming spy thriller film Tiger Zinda Hai. The look was revealed by Salman on Twitter, a day before Diwali.

In the image, Salman can be seen with a bruised forehead, while he holds up a gun and stares into the viewers’ eyes.

“No one hunts like a wounded tiger,” reads the poster.

Salman tweeted:

The Yash Raj Films (YRF) project is a sequel to Ek Tha Tiger and will return Salman and actress Katrina Kaif in lead roles. The two have previously worked in films like Yuvvraj, Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya? and Partner.

It’s Official: Darbuka Siva Is The Composer Of ‘Enai Noki Paayum Thota’

Though many of us knew that Darbuka Siva is the music composer of Enai Noki Paayum Thota – starring Dhanush and Megha Aakash  Gautham Menon, the director of the film, made it official today.

Gautham Menon tweeted with a new version of Maruvaarthai, sung by Sid Sriram.

Amazon Studios Executive Roy Price Resigns After Complaints Of Sexual Misconduct Surface

Less than a week after Amazon suspended the head of its entertainment studio, Roy Price, following allegations of him sexually harassing a producer in 2015, reports now confirm that the executive has officially resigned from his position.

According to The LA Times, an Amazon Studios representative confirmed the resignation. Isa Hackett, an executive producer in the Amazon drama series The Man in the High Castle, alleged that Price had passed lewd comments and made unwanted advances towards her in 2015.

Speaking about his resignation, she said in a statement: “An important conversation has begun about the need to create a culture in our industry which values respect and decency and rejects the abuse of power and dehumanising treatment of others. This is truly an opportunity to find a better way forward, and ultimately toward a balanced representation of women and minorities in leadership positions.”

The incidents took place in a cab and at a company party in San Diego following an appearance at a comic-con two years ago. Hackett had reported the incident to Amazon executives, who then engaged an outside investigator to look into her claim. The findings haven’t been disclosed.

Price was also facing criticism for his close business ties with movie producer Harvey Weinstein, who is already facing a string of similar allegations.

When Deepavali Was Not About Big-Budget Releases, But About Feel-Good Films & Friendly Box-Office Fights

Ever since I can remember, Deepavali has been about waking up before anyone else so that the cracker I light heralds the festival of lights in our neighbourhood. It’s a different matter that everyone woke up early to beat the others at their game. After the mandatory oil ritual and bath, one wore new clothes, burst crackers, and then some more. Once television entered our lives, friends and family sat together to watch Deepavali special programmes, first on black-and-white and, later, colour screens. Soon enough, films entered television too. On festival days, channels would play songs from the movies releasing that day — and, for the first time, we would know how a song we’d only heard on radio till then — had been picturised.

Though festival releases have been around since the time of MK Thyagaraja Bhagavathar (his Devdas was advertised as a film that had seen three Deepavalis; it had a long run in theatres, says film historian Mohan Raman), and later MGR, it is only of late that they’ve taken on gigantic proportions. And, instead of a couple of big-hero big-budget films releasing for a festival, this year’s Deepavali sees just one big player — Mersal. Six hundred screens in Tamil Nadu and more elsewhere means a near carpet-bombing, where the audience has little choice but to somehow watch it.

My first memory of a Deepavali clash at the box office was when Rajinikanth’s Thalapathy and Kamal Haasan’s Gunaa released on the same day. The very next year saw Rajini’s Pandian versus Kamal’s Thevar Magan and Prabhu’s Sentamizh Paatu. If the first clash saw Thalapathy win, the second saw Thevar Magam come on top. A group of us teenagers debated the merits of a Rakamma Kaiyaa Thattu versus the melancholic Paartha Vizhi or the sprightly Kanmani Anbodu, sitting at home. Watching the film on the day of release was a fond unspoken about hope, never a possibility. Unlike today, when everyone’s rushing to book tickets.

Mohan Raman agrees. “Though I come from a family that did not consider cinema a bad word, an anathema, a first day first show during a festival was a no-no. Those days, only a particular set of people would watch movies on Deepavali day. Later, fans took over that role. They would buy all tickets for all the opening weekend, and create a demand. A festival film became a celebration of sorts.”

It helped that people had more disposable cash around festivals; they would spend it on feel-good films that heroes specially chose to be a part of. Legend has it that MGR was paid a princely Rs 3,25,000 for Anbe Vaa, a super hit that released during Pongal in 1966.

Even until recently, in Tamil, we always had the privilege of choice when it came to festival releases. There was a nice mix between mass and avant garde films. This year has been different, but a few small films have also decided to swim along Mersal.

Trade analyst Sreedhar Pillai feels small films must stay out of the festival race. “They should seek some other slot. However good the content, you really can’t compete with a big weekend film. Also, Mersal follows the path of a classic festival film: There’s sentiment, action and more. There are three heroines (Samantha Ruth Prabhu, Nithya Menen and Kajal Aggarwal) and that will draw in women,” he says.

But, has the idea of a Deepavali release gotten better with time? I’m not really sure. There’s little of the excitement we had as children. Increased publicity budgets have ensured news about the film being released is all over the place, and there’s little sense of newness. That said, like everyone else, I’ve also tried, and finally managed to book our family’s three-hour slot to partake of a festive filmi buffet.
