Dave Chappelle, the comedian who has been embroiled in controversy for his transphobic remarks in his recent Netflix special The Closer, is ready to engage with the trans community, according to TMZ.
“Dave stands by his art: No more jokes about transgenders [sic] until we can all laugh together. The streets are talking and Dave is listening. At some point, when everyone is open, I’m sure the communities will come together,” Chappelle’s representatives reportedly told the publication.
Netflix’s senior management too has come under fire for repeatedly defending the show since its release earlier this month.
The streaming giant also suspended a few of its employees who had criticised Chappelle’s comedy special on social media, though the stated reason for the suspension was their unauthorised attendance at a high-level meeting. These employees were later reinstated on October 13.
The company’s trans employees then planned a walkout along on Wednesday and put forth a list of demands, including increased investment in trans and non-binary content, hiring trans and non-binary content executives, especially BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour), in leading roles, and acknowledgement of the harm caused by transphobic or anti-Black content.
Co-CEO and Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos later admitted that he “screwed up” in handling the backlash. However, he said Chappelle’s comedy special did not fall under hate speech and confirmed that Netflix would continue to stream it.
Meanwhile, activist and journalist Ashlee Marie Preston organised an in-person rally named “Stand Up in Solidarity” in support of the walkout at the Netflix headquarters in Los Angeles on Wednesday. The rally was attended by several celebrities, including musician Nina, drag queen and television personality Eureka O’Hara, author Dr Eric Cervini, filmmaker Blossom C Brown, actors Colton Haynes, Hunter Reese Pena, Gene Kang, among several hundred others.
While Chappelle’s team maintained that he was not approached by Netflix to initiate a conversation, rally organiser, Preston, wrote on October 14, on social media, “Dave Chappelle was not ‘canceled’. He’s been invited to the table for transformative dialogue but won’t show up. That’s not ‘cancel culture,’ but an avoidance of accountability. He’s no victim. The man is worth $50M. Unlike many trans people his comedy stigmatizes – he’ll live.”
Several public figures and members of the industry voiced their support for the walkout on social media.
Canadian filmmaker, writer and producer, Dan Levy shared a statement, on Twitter, on Wednesday, that read, “I stand with every employee at Netflix using their voice to ensure a safe and supportive work environment. I’ve known first hand how vital television can be when it comes to influencing the cultural conversation. That impact is real and works both ways: positively AND negatively. Transphobia is unacceptable and harmful. That isn’t a debate.”
Trans actor Elliot Page wrote, “I stand with the trans, nonbinary, and BIPOC employees at Netflix fighting for more and better trans stories and a more inclusive workplace.”
Meanwhile, Chappelle revealed at a sold-out London gig on Wednesday evening that he is planning a 10-city US tour of the same show if Netflix drops it, according to Variety.
A true-crime podcast, a millennial and two boomers comically solving a murder, and a beautiful apartment building in New York City’s Upper West Side – that’s the entire premise of Only Murders in the Building.
With Disney+ Hotstar having dropped the last episode this week, here is a quick look at creator-actor Steve Martin’s zany whodunnit starring himself, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez.
Charles-Haden Savage (Martin) is a former TV detective in a show titled Brazzos, who has since become lonely and irrelevant. Gomez stars as Mabel Mora, a mysterious 28-year-old who claims to renovate the penthouse, and Short stars as the eccentric, creative but broke Broadway director Oliver Putnam. The three neighbours have nothing in common until the suicide of another resident Tim Kono (Julian Cihi), sends the building into a frenzy. They discover that they are fans of the same true-crime podcast All is Not Ok in Oklahoma hosted by Cinda Channing (Tina Fey) and also begin to suspect that Kono was actually murdered.
Soon, the trio team up and vow to solve the murder. From snooping through trash, stealing mail, and breaking into apartments, they become amateur detectives who wreak havoc on their building. And you cannot help but root for them. The likeability and antics of the protagonists are the show’s driving force. It is Short’s portrayal of Putnam that really stands out. His idea to create a podcast, sell tie-dye podcast merchandise and incessantly badger his sponsor/neighbour Teddy Dimas (Nathan Lane) to fund the podcast are delectable to watch.
But the other tenants are no less eccentric: there is a therapist who leaves his business cards during a wake, a cat-crazy man who stores his dead cat in the freezer, and a cleaning lady who gives information if you buy a shipment of ‘gut milk’. Of course, there is Sting, who may or may not have murdered Tim Kono.
Only Murders in the Building is a comedy that banks on the generational gap to make its viewers laugh. For instance, 60-year-old Charles and Oliver break their heads trying to think of ways to text Mabel. “Calls bother them for some reason,” remarks Oliver when Charles wonders if he should text or call her. The quips are predictable but enjoyable.
The series is also a comedy of errors. The trio is messy and they leave evidence while snooping and keep missing each other in elevators. Gomez’s chemistry with Short and Martin deserves a mention. Her sombre and no-nonsense attitude complements the technologically-inept, but loving older duo.
The best and worst thing about the show is its simplicity. The plot and the characters do not take themselves too seriously, making it a light-hearted watch. In serious shows like Mare of Easttown, the sub-plots and characters are as grim as the murder itself. However, Only Murders in the Building is only filled with fun moments. Even when dangerous things happen, the tone does not change. This can sometimes get frustrating as it seems like we are watching a Nancy Drew or Hardy Boys adaptation for children rather than an adult whodunnit.
The plot may not be new but the series stands out for its one-of-a-kind setting and atmosphere; it truly carries the show. The Arconia is a building like no other. In a set-up that reminds one of Hitchcock’s Rear Window, the apartments look like they are straight out of a Pinterest board. No wonder the inhabitants do not consider leaving even though their neighbours are dropping dead.
Perhaps, the most striking factor about the show is the costumes. When Mabel struts down the road in a yellow faux fur jacket, golden hoops, and red Beats headphones and Oliver dons purple scarves around his tight sweaters, it is easy to forget that the show is a murder mystery and not a high fashion show.
Ironically, Only Murders in the Building is groundbreaking in everything except the murder bit. There is a twist in every episode and the audiences may not be able to guess what is coming next but the conclusions and reveals are never fully satisfying.
Only Murders in the Building is an innocent murder mystery if there ever was such a thing. Even if you are not too intrigued by the central mystery, it is difficult to not be carried away by the other elements and we, for one, are quite okay with that.
If you enjoy watching amateur detectives solving crimes, here are six other shows and movies that you might like once you finish streaming Only Murders in the Building:
Enola Holmes (2020)
Starring Millie Bobby Brown as the titular character, Enola Holmes follows the story of famed detective Sherlock Holmes’ younger sister. The young teenager travels to London to find her missing mother and gets entangled in a mystery surrounding a young lord known as Tewkesbury. While she attempts to solve the mystery, she also has to steer clear of her brothers Sherlock (Henry Cavill) and Mycroft (Sam Claflin) who are on the lookout for her.
Set in the fictional town of Neptune, this series follows high-school student Veronica Mars who also moonlights as a private investigator, alongside her father, the town’s former disgraced sheriff. This amateur detective attempts to solve the murder of her best friend Lilly Kane (Amanda Seyfried) while trying to balance her school and social life. The success of Veronica Mars spawned a movie and a limited series on Hulu in 2019.
Father Brown(2013- Present)
Based on author GK Chesterton’s short stories of the same name, this BBC series is about a Catholic priest who solves crimes and mysteries in his local village. Set in the 1950s, Father Brown (Mark Williams) is a World War I veteran who uses his understanding of human nature to crack cases much to the chagrin of the local police. Having heard hundreds of confessions, the priest has a unique perspective on human beings that sets the show apart from other amateur detective series.
Agatha Christie’s Marple (2004-2013)
Agatha Christie has written many detective stories, but Miss Marple is unique. Her kind and frail demeanour cause most to underestimate her intellect. In this particular adaptation by ITV, starring Geraldine McEwan, Marple’s investigations deviate from the source material and the killers are sometimes changed, making it an interesting watch even for those who have already read the books. The show is also famous for its guest appearances; actors like Benedict Cumberbatch, Joan Collins, and Carey Mulligan have appeared on the show.
Don’t F*** with Cats: Hunting an Internet Killer (2019)
Don’t F*** with Cats is a true-crime documentary series about a group of amateur internet sleuths who used Facebook to track down a killer, Luka Magnotta. After seeing him upload videos of torturing and killing cats, a group of people got together and attempted to track Magnotta down. Their searches eventually led to the revelation that Magnotta killed and dismembered a university student Jun Lin in 2012.
This documentary can be streamed on Netflix.
Scooby Doo, Where Are You? (1969)
While this animated series has been adapted multiple times, the original series definitely stands out. Talking dog Scooby-Doo and his friends Fred, Daphne, Velma, and Shaggy solve supernatural crimes by driving around in their van. Despite being mere kids, the group always manages to uncover the most bizarre crimes leading them to deduce the villain is almost always a human and not a supernatural being.
Reba Monica John, the actor who primarily works in Malayalam and Tamil cinema, is gearing up for her first Kannada release, Rathnan Prapancha. The film is set to premiere on Amazon Prime Video on Friday and the actor says her character in it is a “beautifully written one” that takes the entire plot forward.
She stars opposite actor Dhananjay, who got his breakthrough playing the antagonist Daali in Tagaru (2018). Rathnan Prapancha is directed by Rohit Padaki and produced by Karthik and Yogi G Raj.
According to the makers, the film is the emotional yet amusing journey of Ratnakara (Dhananjay), who sets out on a quest to find his roots while working through the perils of his current life. In this journey, he is accompanied by Mayuri (Reba), a journalist who is trying to break a never-before-told story.
In conversation with Silverscreen India, Reba says Mayuri is “very pro-active, someone who wants to make a mark for herself and get breaking news.”
“She is always on the lookout for news, and she chances upon Ratnakara. He has a story and she wants to help him but also has her personal agenda of wanting to break the story. However, during this journey, she realises that she is emotionally involved and what happens in the journey forms the rest of the plot,” the actor adds.
Reba notes that she could relate to Mayuri, with whom she shares many characteristics. “Like her, I am also extremely focused, pro-active and always plan for things, for the future. So those I was easily able to portray. Understanding Mayuri was not difficult. On the other hand, being a journalist is something I honestly don’t know anything about – the work, the mannerisms, the behaviour of someone in that field. So I sat with my director and worked on it. I also tried to understand her journey.”
Rathnan Prapancha translates to Rathnan’s world, which makes it seem like a film that revolves primarily around the male protagonist. Asked how much of an impact her character has in that world, Reba points to a line from the trailer that goes, “My life was settling down and right then, a girl came into my life.” The actor adds, “His journey and revelation begin with Mayuri; she initiates the entire thing. Initially upset, he then realises how crucial a step it was and how much his very personality could change as a result of it. Everything starts off with her and she takes the plot forward. It is a beautifully written character from whom the entire plot begins to unfold.”
Born to a Malayali family in Bengaluru, Reba was brought up in the same city, but is only just making her debut in Kannada through Rathnan Prapancha.
The actor, who has predominantly worked in the Malayalam and Tamil film industries, feels there has been a “sudden drastic change” in Kannada cinema in the past 4-5 years. “Amazing content is coming from the Kannada industry and especially with OTT boom, there is an opportunity for people from everywhere to view these films.”
Her first project in the language, Sakalakala Vallabha, is still awaiting release.
Reba notes that she was looking for “something that really moved” her and was waiting for the right project with which to dip her toes into the Kannada industry when Sakalakala Vallabha happened. “I had thought of maybe not doing anything else in Kannada until its release. But all that changed when Rohit [Padaki, director of Rathnan Prapancha] narrated this script to me. Above all, it was the character that made me say yes to this film. I had a feeling that this would work.”
The actor mentions that she does not have a language barrier anymore. “Despite being a Malayali, I have done more Tamil films and am comfortable with the industry there. But that apart, one of the things to be grateful for with the pandemic is the OTT boom, thanks to which people can watch content from other languages. For example, the Malayalam industry has broken out and many from other regions have started to watch Malayalam content,” Reba points out.
The actor, who has been part of the film industry for six years now since her debut Jacobinte Swargarajyam (2016), says the biggest draw for her is the ability to connect with the “soul and emotions” of the audience. Revealing that she is partial to emotional drama as a genre, Reba says, “I did Bigiland it was an emotional one. So was my debut film, which was about family relations. I think that genre is something that I prefer. People can relate to honest emotions.”
Reba’s future projects include the Tamil web series Akash Vaani, alongside actor Kavin, the Tamil-Telugu bilingual multi-starrer October 31st Ladies Night directed by filmmaker Vijay, and the action thriller FIR.
“October 31st Ladies Night is in a genre that I have never tried – horror. I absolutely enjoy horror though. The release of FIR is stuck due to the Covid-19 situation but it will be out soon. And Akash Vaani is a sweet rom-com that people can connect to,” Reba says as she signs off.
With the reopening of theatres in Maharashtra on Friday and the release of filmmaker Rohit Shetty’s cop action-drama Sooryavanshi, starring Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif, on November 4, the theatre scene in India is slowly attaining normalcy.

Netflix gained 4.4 million subscribers in its third quarter to take its paid membership base to 214 million worldwide, the streaming giant announced on Tuesday in its shareholder letter.
The Q3 shareholder letter also noted that Squid Game became its biggest title ever. The South Korean show that proved to be a game-changer for the streaming platform, amassed over 142 million household views in the first four weeks since its release on September 17, with the majority of views coming from outside its home market. It also ranked as the streamer’s top program in 94 countries, including the US.
The show, Netflix noted, has “pierced the cultural zeitgeist” to create a global fanbase, that spawned a Saturday Night Live skit and TikTok clips and memes with more than 42 billion views.
Speaking about the success of the show during an earnings interview, Netflix Co-CEO and Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos said “the stories of the world can increasingly come from anywhere in the world,” given the prevalence of subtitling and dubbing.
Other titles that proved to be successful for Netflix included Spain’s Money Heist, which was the platform’s first non-English language title, with 69 million household views and Britain’s Sex Education, with 55 million household views.
Sarandos noted that non-English language content viewing has grown three times since Netflix started producing content in 2008.
“We are now producing local TV and film in approximately 45 countries and have built deep relationships with creative communities around the world. While the goal of our local content executives is always to create locally authentic stories that will resonate in their country, Netflix is a global,
direct-to-consumer service which enables creators to reach broader audiences,” said the shareholder letter.
Sarandos added that the fourth quarter, from October to December, as well as the first quarter of 2022, will witness an expansive local title slate, including a spin-off version of Call My Agent from India and the Italian film Hand of God, among others.
Netflix also announced a shift to reporting the hours viewed for their titles rather than the number of accounts that choose to watch them, to better match TV viewing metrics used across the world. It further proposes to release regular title metrics outside of earnings reports.
Netflix original films, that the OTT platform introduced three years ago, continue to perform well although not on par with the shows. Films like Sweet Girl, Kissing Booth 3, and the German-language film Blood Red Sky have garnered 68 million, 59 million, and 53 million views, respectively.
In the earnings interview, the company’s Chief Operations Officer Greg Peters also spoke about Netflix’s plans to foray into online gaming, and its importance in relation to mobile engagement. The idea, Peters said, is to provide “interactive storytelling” through games – a build up from the current form of “linear storytelling.”
Netflix announced its expansion into gaming, in July, that will be included as part of users’ existing subscription at no additional cost. The company also hired Mike Verdu as its new Vice President of Game Development.
“The vast majority of our members engage with us on a mobile device,” said Peters. “We think that this connects really well with the other work that we are doing. We are creating all these universes and worlds, and characters and story lines, and we can attach to the passion and fandom that our members have on viewing those on the video side with game experiences. That will allow them to go deeper and explore spaces that they would not have otherwise seen. Over time, we will try and bring those two closer, and influence each other,” he added.
In September, Netflix introduced mobile games in Poland, Spain, and Italy. While the first two titles launched in Poland were based on the show Stranger Things, the recent set of games released are independent titles.
Ted Sarandos, co-Chief Executive Officer and Chief Content Officer of Netflix, has admitted that he “screwed up” in handling the recent backlash against Dave Chappelle and his Netflix special The Closer.
The American comedian was called out by the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) and the National Black Justice Coalition, earlier this month, after he passed homophobic and anti-trans remarks in his stand-up special for Netflix.
Speaking to Variety on Tuesday, Sarandos, who received flak for defending Chappelle in the name of artistic freedom, said, “I screwed it up in two ways. First and foremost, I should have led with a lot more humanity. Meaning, I had a group of employees who were definitely feeling pain and hurt from a decision we made. And I think that needs to be acknowledged up front before you get into the nuts and bolts of anything. I didn’t do that.”
Netflix’s senior management was embroiled in controversy for defending Chappelle in a leaked memo shared with the staff, part of which read, “While some employees disagree, we have a strong belief that the content on screen [in the comedy special] does not directly translate to real-world harm.”
Questioned about Netflix’s protocol for defining hate speech, Sarandos told Variety, “Where we’ll definitely draw the line is on something that would intentionally call for physically harming other people or even remove protections. For me, intent to cause physical harm crosses the line, for sure.”
Further prodded on whether he and the company believe The Closer amounts to hate speech, he said, “Under the definition of ‘does it intend to cause physical harm?’ I do not believe it falls into hate speech.”
Sarandos also noted that the show will continue to stream on the platform as there have not been “many calls to remove it.”
Netflix’ global head of TV Bela Bajaria had earlier stated that the streaming giant would continue its collaboration with Chappelle in the future.
The company had also suspended a few of its employees who had criticised Chappelle’s comedy special on social media, though the stated reason for the suspension was their unauthorised attendance at a high-level meeting. These employees were later reinstated on October 13.
Meanwhile, several trans employees at Netflix, along with their allies, have planned a walkout that is scheduled to be held on Wednesday.
Activist and journalist Ashlee Marie Preston announced an in-person rally, named ‘Stand Up in Solidarity’, in support of the walkout, which will take place at Netflix’s EPIC building in Hollywood, and will present Sarandos with a list of “firm asks.”
Ahead of the walkout, Netflix employees have released a list of demands, including increased investment in trans and non-binary content, hiring trans and non-binary content executives, especially BIPOC (black, indigenous, and other people of colour), in leading roles, and an acknowledgement of the harm caused by transphobic or anti-Black content.
Asked about this list and what the company proposes to do about it, Sarandos said that Netflix’s creative equity fund heavily invests in LGBTQIA+ stories, and especially, trans and non-binary content.
“We’ve got to take this opportunity to make sure that they know we are with them and creating this content to spread around the world and creating a great workplace for diverse and marginalized populations. We’re firmly committed to it,” he added.
Brinda, the upcoming SonyLIV web series through which actor Trisha Krishnan will be making her web series debut, will revolve around a crime investigation, a source close to the project told Silverscreen India on condition of anonymity.
The web series was officially launched and announced by the makers on Friday on the occasion of Dusshera.
Speaking to Silverscreen India, the source said “The genre is crime investigation and team has been working with SonyLIV for a couple of years for the project. The production will start soon, towards the end of this month and the team has been working on the pre-production for the past two months. The series will be completed probably by January or February, next year.”
The source said that the team will be traveling across Andhra Pradesh and Telangana for shooting.
“It is based on current events from India. It spans across different time periods and covers happenings, important milestones and cultural nuances, in its storyline. Though it is rooted in Telugu, the idea of the story is pan-Indian. It is not a routine crime drama,” the source added. The source also said that the web series and its characters have the potential to create spin-offs.
Produced by production designer Avinash Kolla and his brother Ashish Kolla under the &Stories production banner, the series is written and directed by debutant filmmaker Surya Vangala, who has previously worked under directors Hanu Raghavapudi and Sekhar Kammula. Padmavathi Malladi has co-written the screenplay along with Vangala, while Jay Krishna has written the dialogues. Dinesh K Babu is the cinematographer of the film.
On casting Trisha, the source said “She was the first choice. Trisha’s versatility and ability to pick up nuances and subtilities, make her a good fit for the character.”
The film also features Sai Kumar, Amani, Indrajith Sukumaran, Ravindra Vijay, and Anand Saami in pivotal roles.
Brinda will release on SonyLIV in the first half of 2022.
Filmmaker Onir, who had last helmed Widows of Vrindavan, is set to direct a series for SonyLIV based on the 2019 Pulwama terror attack.
Titled Pulwama Key No. 1026, the eight-episode series will be based on author and journalist Rahul Pandita’s book The Lover Boy of Bahawalpur.
The Pulwama terror attack, which happened on February 14, 2019, is touted to be one of the deadliest terror attacks on security forces. At least 44 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel were killed by a Jaish-e-Mohammed terrorist and another 20 were injured.
“The series is a tribute to all those martyrs whose dreams were blown to smithereens the minute the suicide bomber’s car hit the bus,” a statement from the makers read.
Talking about the series, Onir said in the press release, “The Pulwama terror attack did not just claim the lives of 40 CRPF Jawans, it broke India and its people. 40 is not just a number, but the living dreams of these brave men and their families blown apart. A riveting, emotional tale of an incident that left the entire nation devastated, Pulwama Key No. 1026 is the story about the men and women who worked tirelessly to find the truth. It’s a story every Indian should know, and I feel honoured to helm this project along with writer Rahul Pandita.”
Pandita said the series will shine a spotlight on the men who lost their lives and those who investigated the attacks.
“As a journalist reporting from conflict areas, my endeavour always has been to lend face to people who otherwise get buried in history as statistics. The soldiers killed in the Pulwama attack had names, lives, dreams, hopes of future. So do those who investigated the case painstakingly, often putting themselves in danger. I am glad that with my friend Onir, we will be able to tell these individual stories all weaved in one epic drama,” the author said about the series in the press release.
The cast and crew of the series are yet to be announced.
Senapathy, the Telugu film starring veteran actor Rajendra Prasad in the lead role, is a crime drama that is loosely inspired by Akira Kurosawa’s 1949 Japanese film Stray Dog, says Pavan Sadineni, director of the upcoming film.
Senapathy is set to premiere on the Telugu streaming platform Aha, the makers revealed on social media when releasing a glimpse of the film.
Speaking to Silverscreen India about his upcoming film, Sadineni, who previously helmed the web series, Commit Mental, for the same platform, says, “Senapathy revolves around multiple characters and Rajendra Prasad plays one of the leads. It is a completely fictional story loosely inspired by the Tamil film8 Thottakkal, which, in turn, is based on Akira Kurosawa’s Stray Dog. This film will have more of Stray Dog flavour than 8 Thottakkal.”
The filmmaker adds that the production house bankrolling the project, Sushmita Konidela’s Gold Box Entertainments, has acquired the rights of 8 Thottakkal. “I have seen the Tamil version, and wanted to rectify certain things in the storyline. So we [the writing team] have changed a lot of details of the story. We took the basic premise and adapted it to portray Hyderabadi culture and Telugu people.”
Apart from Rajendra Prasad, the cast comprises of actors Harsha Vardhan, Jeevan Reddy, Naresh Agastya, Pavani Reddy, and Satya Prakash in pivotal roles. The director says working with veteran actors meant he did not have to worry about performances and could concentrate on other aspects of filmmaking.
The film went on floors in August and was wrapped up in early October. It was completely shot in Hyderabad by debutant cinematographer Vivek.
Senapathy, which features no songs, has a background score composed by Shravan.
The film is currently in the post-production stage and the makers are looking to release it in November. However, the actual premiere date has not yet been set.
Sadineni reveals that after Senapathy, he is set to team up with actor Sree Vishnu for a film.
Sivakarthikeyan‘s Doctor has been performing well at the cinemas across Tamil Nadu, and the film has collected over Rs. 24 crores in its first three days.
The story revolves around a small-town girl (Rashmi Veera) who overcomes all societal barriers to become a national-level athlete, but her glory is hindered when she is asked to undergo a gender test, according to the synopsis by Zee5. The film is supposedly based on the life of athlete Dutee Chand, who was dropped from the 2014 Commonwealth Games on the grounds of hyperandrogenism, or a condition wherein, the levels of testosterone are higher in certain women.
For Aswathy Gopalakrishnan of Silverscreen India, the film refuses to study the protagonist’s gift as a natural runner. She added, “Rashmi Rocket goes from being a flimsy sports movie to a flimsier courtroom drama that addresses the injustices women have to deal with in the field of sports.”
Anupama Chopra of Film Companionreflected similar sentiments. While she credited the film for its well intentions, she also called it a muddle, “situated between fact and fiction”.
Both the reviewers highlighted and applauded Banerjee’s performance as Rashmi’s advocate.
Shubhra Gupta of the Indian Express, praised the performances but pointed out certain scenes and plot points that seemed flimsy and forced.
Rashmi Rocket has a current rating of 6.2 on IMDb.
Sardar Udham, based on the real life of Indian revolutionary Sardar Udham Singh, features Vicky Kaushal in the titular role. Directed by Shoojit Sircar, the film also stars Banita Sandhu and Amol Parashar in pivotal roles.
According to Amazon Prime Video’s synopsis, “a young Sardar Udham was left deeply scarred by the Jallianwala Bagh massacre. He escaped into the mountains of Afghanistan, reaching London in 1933-34. There, Udham spent the most decisive 6 years of his life, re-igniting the revolution. On 13th March, 1940, 21 years since carrying the unhealed wound, Udham Singh assassinated Michael O’Dwyer, the man at the helm of affairs in Punjab, April 1919”.
Kaushal has received appreciation for his portrayal of Udham Singh and some have even considered this to be his career-best.
For Anupama Chopra of Film Companion, while the screenplay is scattered, and the duration long, she credits it for establishing patriotism “without resorting to chest-thumping or jingoism”.
Soumya Srivastava of Hindustan Times, also applauds the film for its intent and execution. She adds, “Rarely has there been a Hindi film so unafraid to be bold and unwilling to gently depict the truth of the violence and sheer horror that still simmers in those it once affected”.
Sardar Udham has an IMDb rating of 9.2, mostly for Kaushal’s performance, the recreation of London, and the portrayal of patriotism without jingoism.
The Kanishk Varma directorial follows the story of Vivaan (played by Jammwal), who tries to help the patients, including his wife, who are held as hostages in a hospital.
Almost all reviewers drew parallels of Sanak to the 1988 film Die Hard, where Bruce Willis played a similar role.
Anupama Chopra of Film Companionpointed out that despite strongly introducing certain characters like villain Chandan Roy Sanyal, and Neha Dhupia as ACP Jayati Bhargav, they are sidelined while Jammwal’s action drives the film.
Shubhra Gupta of the Indian Express, called the film a “a stroll in the park, devoid of any spark.”
According to Amazon Prime Video’s synopsis, “the story revolves around the sibling families in Pudukottai district. There might be differences in their opinions, but their fight is for the same win.”
Ranjani Krishnakumar of Film Companion, said that while the film does not offer anything new, it further falters in choosing grandstanding dialogues over events and action.
For Ashameera Aiyappan of Firstpost, while the lead actors are progressive, the film does not explore contrasting perspectives in detail. It is content to stick to the surface.
It revolves around the lives of four individuals, Arjun (Sharwanand), Vijay (Siddharth), Maha (Aditi Rao Hydari), and Anu Emmanuel (Smitha), in Visakhapatnam.
Sankeertana Varma of Firstpostsaid that while the film’s casting works and carries the storyline, the film loses its way from jumping back and forth between a tale of two friends, and an underworld saga.
Gabbeta Ranjith Kumar of the Indian Express, pointed out that while the film was supposed to revolve around Rao Hydari’s character Maha, it loses its pace. On one hand, he agreed that the casting was on-point, but “the stilted characterisation and run-of-the-mill story lets them down.”
According to IMDb, the film revolves around “the ghost of a wronged mother tries to take revenge on a Zamindar and his daughter, but one man stands in its way.”
For Subha J Rao of Film Companion, the film was dotted with lame humour, sexist jokes, and an illogical plotline that reduced the performances of the actors, to nothing.
Manoj Kumar R of the Indian Express, said that the film draws from Rajinikanth’s 2005 film Chandramukhi. He called the film the dumbest film of the year that did not have a single actor who played a meaningful role, including Arya, who was used as an eye candy.
The story revolves around Harsha (Akkineni) and Vibha (Hegde), who confront their ideas of a married life, according to IMDb.
For Bhavana Murali of Film Companion, the film was like old wine in an older bottle. She added that while it started with a progressive take on marriage, it does not explore it beyond the one-line: family vs. romance.
For Balakrishna Ganeshan of The News Minute, despite the slow-pace of the film, it worked well because it was not about just two individuals with different ideas, but other characters, including Murali Sharma, Vennela Kishore, and others, were also given importance.
Most Eligible Bachelor has a current IMDbrating of 7.3.
Meenakshi Sundareshwar, the upcoming Hindi film starring actors Sanya Malhotra and Abhimanyu Dassani, has been receiving flak for its stereotypical portrayal of Tamil people and Tamil culture ever since the release of the film’s teaser earlier this week.
Produced by Karan Johar’s Dharmatic Entertainment and directed by Vivek Soni, Meenakshi Sundareshwar is set to premiere on Netflix on November 5.
According to the streaming platform, the romantic comedy “encapsulates the various interlinked aspects of relationships, joint families, the awkwardness in a new marriage and everything in between. When the challenge of a long-distance relationship is bestowed upon this young couple, the question arises – will distance really make their hearts grow fonder?”
The film’s teaser gives a glimpse of a Tamil-style wedding, a Tamil folk song with a chorus hook that refers to the Tamil film icon Superstar Rajinikanth, and other references to the actor as well. However, the dialogues are almost entirely in Hindi and English, with the female lead, who is portrayed as a Tamilian, only heard using one Tamil word, ‘illa’ [meaning ‘no’].
Following the teaser’s release, several social media users, especially Tamil people, have criticised the film for typecasting. Some of the criticisms that were shared on Twitter included remarks on the seeming lack of research, the fact that Tamil characters are essayed by Hindi speakers, usage of cliche words like ‘illa’, the costume choices for the female lead, and the use of the Rajinikanth references.
It may be noted that Meenakshi Sundareshwar is not the first Bollywood film to receive criticism for its portrayal of Tamil people. Earlier, films like the 2013 Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Chennai Express and Dharma Productions’ own 2014 Alia Bhatt-starrer 2 States had also come under fire for similar reasons.
One Instagram user named Adhavan Sundaramurthy called out Netflix India and asked if there was any Tamil speaking person in Meenakshi Sundareshwar’s creative team. He mentioned how the community is still reeling from the misrepresentation in Chennai Express, especially the Lungi Dance song, and noted that Tamil culture is not just about Rajinikanth. “We don’t need another ‘Bollywoodsplaining’ of not just Tamizh culture but any culture for that matter. Either do it right or please don’t do it at all,” he added.
On the other hand, there were also a few who expressed their joy on seeing the Rajinikanth references in the teaser.
Even as the American police and federal agencies spent the whole of last week disputing the news that the infamous Zodiac Killer’s identity has been revealed, the public’s excitement has not died down. For decades, conspiracies and theories about the anonymous serial killer who terrorised San Francisco in the 1960s dominated the pop culture space. It has spawned off documentaries and star-studded films like 2007’s Zodiac starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Mark Ruffalo, and Robert Downey Jr.
So when a group of cold case specialists known as the Case Breakers named a man, Gary Francis Poste as the Zodiac Killer, the internet, quite naturally, broke. And true crime fans know that despite the police pushing back on these claims, a new breakthrough comes around every year. So, while you wait for the next breakthrough in the case, here are seven shows about serial killers that you can watch right now:
Asur: Welcome to Your Dark Side (2020)
Premiering on Voot, this Hindi language thriller series stars Arshad Warsi and Barun Sobti in the lead. Set in the city of Varanasi, forensic expert Nikhil Nair (Sobti) teams up with his former mentor Dhananjay Rajpoot (Warsi) to track down a notorious serial killer who murders people who seemingly have no connection to each other.
Over the course of eight episodes, the psychological thriller intersperses itself with themes of religion and Hindu mythology which sets it apart from the usual serial killer narrative.
The AlienistSeason 1 (2018)
Based on the novel of the same name by Caleb Carr, this limited series is about a ritualistic killer who murders young boys in nineteenth-century New York. To investigate the matter, a psychiatrist, an illustrator, a police commissioner, and his secretary team up and begin to work outside the law. Combining historical fiction with real-life prominent personalities such as Theodore Roosevelt, through its plot, The Alienist tackles issues like class divide, gender discrimination, and early forms of psychological profiling.
Mindhunter (2017-2019)
Two FBI agents and a psychologist team up to launch a research project to interview serial killers in order to understand their psyche. Believing that the project will help them with open cases, the team interviews many notorious serial killers between the 1970s and 80s.
Mindhunteris based on the 1995 true crime book of the same name and the show has actors portraying many infamous serial killers including Charles Manson, Edmund Kemper, and Dennis Radar who was known as the BTK Strangler.
True Detective Season 1 (2014)
Featuring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson as detectives Rustin Cole and Martin Hart, season 1 of True Detective follows a non-linear narrative as the story jumps back and forth between 1995 and 2012. The two detectives trace a serial killer who engages in occult practices in the state of Louisiana. After investigating the murder of a young prostitute in 1995, they are drawn back to the case 17 years later when another woman is killed in a similar manner. This leads them to believe that the real killer might still be at large.
Hannibal (2013-2015)
Perhaps the most famous fictional serial killer, Hannibal Lecter has been immortalised in movies many a time now. This time, creator Bryan Fuller developed a series focusing on FBI profiler Will Graham (Hugh Dancy) who has the ability to empathise with serial killers. When a serial killer attacks college girls, Will is drawn to the case and his boss calls upon Hannibal Lecter (Mads Mikkelsen), a renowned psychiatrist, to keep an eye on him. Unbeknownst to them, Lecter himself is a cannibalistic serial killer who takes a fascination to Will’s unique ability.
The Confession Killer (2019)
This true-crime documentary miniseries tells the real-life tale of Henry Lee Lucas who confessed to murdering 600 people. This led to the Texas Rangers organising a task force to look into it. However, his confessions began to sound dicey as new evidence and facts suggested that he was not even in the same state as some of the murders. While Henry was convicted of 11 crimes, many argue that he may have killed only three of them.
Confession Killer not only explores Henry’s nature but also delves into the mishandling of his case by law enforcement authorities which could have let hundreds of killers go free.
You (2019- Present)
When You released on Netflix, its premise was all that social media could talk about. A book store manager Joe Goldberg sees a girl Beck and begins to stalk and obsess over her. Turns out that he is also a serial killer who will simply ‘eliminate’ anyone who comes in the way of his pursuits.
With Joe’s twisted narrative and explanations for his shocking actions coupled with unlikeable but entertaining characters, the plot only gets more bizarre with each season. The latest season is all set to premiere on Netflix on October 15.
One of the antagonists in Rashmi Rocket is a young sprinter, the daughter of a top official at a state-run athletics academy. The protagonist, Rashmi Veera (Taapsee Pannu), meets her on her first day at the academy, on the ground where the athletes are warming up. Almost immediately, without wasting any screen-time, the villain jeers at Veera for her Kutchi-laced Hindi, rural upbringing, and unfeminine build. The recent sprout of issue-based cinema in Bollywood teems with characters like this one – devoid of individuality or grey shade, eerily reminiscent of an internet troll.
Directed by Akarsh Khurana, Rashmi Rocket goes from being a flimsy sports movie to a flimsier courtroom drama that addresses the injustices women have to deal with in the field of sports. The film is centred on a running prodigy, Rashmi Veera, who, after winning several medals at national and international races, is subjected to a humiliating gender verification test.
The film opens with a scene of a group of policemen illegally arresting her from her hostel, alleging that “she is a man,” and cuts to an elaborate flashback – Veera’s childhood in Kutch, when her tomboyish nature wasn’t looked down upon but amusedly pointed out by the townspeople. When she runs past a street vendor, he cries out, “Is this a girl or a boy?!” Throughout the film, various characters wonder the same about Veera, although Pannu or the child actor look nothing unusual. The film establishes Veera’s ambiguous gender status using cliches such as a top-angle shot of her riding a motorbike and her choice of clothes. She likes to wear a tank-top and pants while the women in her surroundings dress in colourful traditional attires.
When she meets an army man, an eligible bachelor who can’t take his eyes off her, the film’s tone changes. In the Garba song sequence, the camera offers a close look at her bare waist and shoulders as though it wants to ask the viewers, “She looks feminine and gorgeous, doesn’t she?” The song crystallises the character’s dilemma in cheesy lines, “Cool Cool Main Chori (girl), Oh Choron (boys) I Am Very Sorry.”
Running ought to be a fun sport that, in rare gifted instances, becomes spiritual. Irrfan Khan demonstrates in Paan Singh Tomar the moments an athlete transforms into an artist, what it means to be consumed by running. Director-writer Tingmanshu Dhulia seamlessly wove Singh’s social background into the scenes of his athletic training. Paan Singh runs because he is poor and hungry. It is a quiet but magnificent form of resistance.
In Rashmi Rocket, the protagonist is a natural runner, but the film refuses to study her gift. It is conveyed to the viewers using pamphlet lines. “She is tez (fast), like a rocket,” repeat the sub-characters throughout the first half of the film. When she is sprinting, the film switches to slow-motion shots that, counterintuitively, impress upon the viewers the mundaneness of her body language. Next, the camera turns towards the onlookers faking astonishment. Running in Rashmi Rocket is devoid of thrill or a character, and is instead covered in painful mush.
In the scenes about Rashmi’s initial days at the academy, the film calls for the viewer’s attention to her struggling with the techniques. She has to catch up with the city-bred athletes who possess sophisticated methods. But there is so little to see here.
Rashmi Rocket’s central issue is the gender verification test that was used to kill the career of many female athletes across the world. Athletes such as Santhi Soundarajan and Dutee Chand, who faced the test in India, came from marginal communities. Their life makes for incredible stories about talent, perseverance, and various forms of social malaise. Rashmi Rocket erases the reality of these women and replaces them with upper-class and upper-caste bodies, unblemished and light-skinned. In the scenes from the sports academy, the female athletes, stretching their muscles in a leisurely fashion, resemble models ready to walk the ramp and pose for photographs. Using these characters who conform to Bollywood’s biases about femininity and the rural-urban divide, Khuranna seeks to shake the society’s conscience.
Pannu looks athletic and muscular, but her efforts to stay understated accidentally strip the character of its complex shades. Priyanshu Painyuli’s supporting partner resembles a cardboard cutout. The character wears the woke badge on his sleeves but is exhaustingly bland. The only actor who manages to make an impression is Abhishek Banerjee, who plays an enthusiastic junior lawyer. His flair for humour makes the courtroom scenes watchable.
Towards the tail end, the film further intensifies Rashmi’s crisis. She gets pregnant, and now she must inform and demonstrate to the viewers that pregnancy isn’t necessarily a barrier in an athlete’s career. This narrative decision, interestingly, reflects the creative crisis Indian cinema is passing through at the moment. It isn’t enough to be socially sensitive but must be comprehensively perfect, rigid and free of human frailties, like the rulebooks at a religious retreat.

Jon Kent aka the latest Superman is bisexual, DC Comics announced on Monday. The new identity of the son of original Superman Clark Kent and Lois Lane will be introduced in the upcoming comic book Superman: Son of Kal-El #5.
Written by Tom Taylor, the comic will hit the stands on November 9. In it, Jon Kent develops a bond with reporter Jay Nakamura. The cover has been sketched by John Timms.
“I’ve always said everyone needs heroes and everyone deserves to see themselves in their heroes and I’m very grateful DC and Warner Bros share this idea,” said Taylor. “Superman’s symbol has always stood for hope, for truth and for justice. Today, that symbol represents something more. Today, more people can see themselves in the most powerful superhero in comics.”
Jon Kent debuted in the comic world with the 2015 series Convergence: Superman #2. However, his sexual identity was under wraps.
DC Chief Creative Officer and Publisher Jim Lee said that in the new series, Jon explores his identity as well as learns the secrets about his family.
He is the second major DC superhero to have a non-heterosexual identity.
Earlier in August, Tim Drake, who took on the identity of Robin, the sidekick to Batman, came out as a gay in Batman: Urban Legends #6. The three-part story is written by Meghan Fitzmartin, with art by Belen Ortega.
While Tim Drake aka Robin was first introduced in the comics in 1940 and rumours surrounding his sexuality had been doing the rounds for long, it was not until 2021 that the curtain on his identity was lifted.
With Jon Kent now joining Tim Drake as an openly non-heterosexual superhero, Silverscreen India brings to you five other famous superheroes from across Marvel and DC, who belong to the LGBTQIA+ community.
Loki
Loki became Marvel’s first ever queer character after the superhero came out as a bisexual in Disney’s web series Loki. Known as the God of Mischief, Loki is the son of Odin and brother to Thor. In June, director Kate Herron confirmed the character’s sexuality after the release of the third episode of the series featuring Tom Hiddleston. Loki’s bisexuality comes out in selective comic books like Young Avengers and Loki: Agent of Asgard, although not in a specific manner. Marvel too does not specify Loki’s sexuality and leaves it open for readers to interpret. Loki is also usually termed gender-fluid. The gender-fluidity association may have something to do with his powers that include shape-shifting, hypnotizing, sorcery, and black magic.
Harley Quinn
Harley Quinn, the DC super-villain and member of the Suicide Squad, has been bisexual for a while. Harleen Quinzel was a psychologist who fell for her subject, the Joker, and helped him escape the asylum. Her obsession with Joker inspired her to adopt a new identity, that of Harley Quinn, the Joker’s sidekick-slash-love interest. After they split, Quinn went her own way to become a part of teams like Suicide Squad and Gotham City Sirens. While Harley Quinn’s sexuality is not mentioned explicitly in either the comics or the films, in 2017, Jimmy Palmiotti and Amanda Conner confirmed that she is bisexual, through Harley Quinn #25, where she and Poison Ivy share a comic book kiss. Moreover, the 2019 animated series Harley Quinn, that is available on DC Universe, fleshes out the relationship between the two. However, DC mentions that there is no coming-out story.
Batwoman
Kate Kane aka Batwoman has undergone several character transitions since her inception in the 1950s. While she initially started out as Batman’s love-interest, she was soon given an independent identity that rendered her a lesbian since day one. She is one of the few openly gay superheroes. Batwoman struggles for respect in her personal life as she protects all of Gotham City’s citizens, whether they respect her or not, as per DC. The television adaptation of the superhero sees Kate Kane’s successor, Ryan Wilder, take over the mantle of Batwoman. The third season of the HBO Max series will see a Black gay Batwoman, played by Javicia Leslie, thereby expanding DC’s blanket of inclusion.
Wonder Woman
Princess Diana aka Wonder Woman, like Harley Quinn, has been queer her whole life, but DC Comics has never made the character come out. Until 2016, when writer Greg Rucka, with the release of comics like Wonder Woman: Earth One and DC Comics Bomshells, confirmed the Amazonian’s sexuality. The very simple reason behind her sexuality, Rucka toldComicosity, is the place Themyscira. “It’s supposed to be paradise. You’re supposed to be able to live happily. You’re supposed to be able to have a fulfilling, romantic and sexual relationship. And the only options are women.” However, while her sexuality has been hinted at since her inception, the films have only portrayed Wonder Woman’s relationship with Steve Trevor, with hardly any queer traits.
Aqualad
Originally created in 2010 for the Young Justice television series, as the half-Atlantean Kaldur’ahm, Jackson Hyde in the comics instead grew up on land and did not explore his sexuality until his membership in the 2016 Teen Titans, as per DC Comics. Jackson’s animated counterpart followed suit in Season 3 of Young Justice, with a new boyfriend by his side. Aqualad is a hybrid who trains under Aquaman and features in the recent Aquaman, written by Kelly Sue DeConnick and drawn largely by Robson Rocha.
Squid Game, the new South Korean survival drama series streaming on Netflix, has officially become the platform’s biggest launch ever, the streaming giant announced on Wednesday.
The series, which premiered on Netflix on September 17, has “officially reached 111 million fans” in less than a month.
Driven to “desperation” and gathered at an unknown location, all the participants play one game each day as they race towards the prize money. “The price of failure is death, and only one contestant can survive to claim the prize,” according to the Netflix synopsis. The series eventually reveals how this diverse group of people ended up there, and who the mastermind is behind the games.
Squid Game is written and directed by Hwang Dong-hyuk, the maker of TheFortress, Miss Granny, and Silenced. Dong-hyuk first conceived the series as a film and began writing it in 2008, right after his debut. “That was a time when I frequented comic book stores. As I was reading a lot of comic books, I thought about creating something like a comic book story in Korea,” he said.
Netflix reinstated three of its employees, who were suspended after they criticised the streaming platform’s new Dave Chappelle comedy special, The Closer. The streamer, however, stressed that the three were not suspended for their criticisms, but rather over their unauthorised attendance at a high-level meeting.
A Netflix spokesperson is quoted by Deadline as saying, “It is absolutely untrue to say that we have suspended any employees for tweeting about this show. Our employees are encouraged to disagree openly and we support their right to do so.”
Soon after, one of the suspended employees, Terra Field, shared the news of her reinstatement on Twitter. She wrote, “Netflix has reinstated me after finding that there was no ill-intent in my attending the QBR meeting,” and added that she felt vindicated.
Netflix has reinstated me after finding that there was no ill-intent in my attending the QBR meeting. I've included the statement I requested below.
I'm going to take a few days off to decompress and try to figure out where I'm at. At the very least, I feel vindicated. pic.twitter.com/lYxemYgRkJ
Dave Chappelle’s The Closer premiered on Netflix on October 5. Throughout the performance, Chappelle is seen passing homophobic and anti-trans remarks. Soon after the release, Field had tweeted about the show and wrote that Chappelle “attacks the trans community, and the very validity of transness – all while trying to pit us against other marginalized groups.”
Her suspension came on Monday just as Netflix’s co-CEO Ted Sarandos defended Chappelle and said that his stand-up does not cross the line on hate.
In an office memo, obtained by Variety, Sarandos had addressed staff members on the stand-up special and defended Chappelle. He offered guidelines to managers on how to handle upset and angry employees.
The memo was sent after Netflix’s quarterly business review (QBR), a two-day gathering of the top 500 employees at the company. It was the same meeting that Field and the two other employees had attended without authorisation.
Sarandos wrote that Chappelle is one of the most popular stand-up comedians today and that Netflix has a long standing deal with him. “As with our other talent, we work hard to support their creative freedom – even though this means there will always be content on Netflix some people believe is harmful,” he wrote.
GLADD, an organisation which works for the rights of the LGBTQIA+ people in the entertainment industry, reacted to Sarandos’ memo on Twitter and wrote, “Netflix has a policy that content ‘designed to incite hate or violence’ is not allowed on the platform, but we all know that anti-LGBTQ content does exactly that.”
GLADD further added, “While Netflix is home to groundbreaking LGBTQ stories, now is the time for Netflix execs to listen to LGBTQ employees, industry leaders, and audiences and commit to living up to their own standards.”
Working on Udanpirappe made Jyotika realise that it could be “beautiful” to play a character slightly older than herself, the actor told Silverscreen India during a roundtable interview organised by Amazon Prime Video on Monday as part of the film’s promotions.
Jyotika’s 50th film, Udanpirappe is set to premiere on the streaming platform on Thursday (October 14). The film also stars actor-directors Sasikumar and Samuthirakani in the lead alongside her. Produced by actor Suriya’s 2D Entertainment banner, the film is written and directed by filmmaker Era Saravanan.
During the round table interview on Monday, when Silverscreen India asked Jyotika about her learning experience while working on Udanpirappe, the actor said, “Playing this character [Mathangi] was new to me in several ways. I learnt the importance of silence with this role because I have typically played a talkative person in most other films that I have done. Also, when everyone is in the rat race to look younger, I realised it could be beautiful to play an older character, which was an absolutely new experience to me.”
Jyotika also shared that to play Mathangi, she took inspiration from her mother-in-law at home and all the women she knew. “The film is an absolute family entertainer that revolves around the bond between a brother and sister. It also evokes a certain type of cinema that we have not seen in the last 15 years. There are a lot of good things in this film, which has deep-rooted family values,” she added.
According to the official synopsis, Udanpirappe will showcase the unconditional love between siblings Mathangi (Jyotika) and Vairavan (Sasikumar), who are separated due to differences of opinion. While Vairavan believes justice must be fought for, Mathangi’s husband Sargunam (Samuthirakanni) insists on going by the law diligently. Over the years, the rift between them is aggravated and all attempts by Mathangi to unite the family turn futile. Whether Mathangi can unite her family forms the crux of this emotional family drama, which the director had earlier told Silverscreen India will shine a light on familial relationships, particularly estranged ones.
Jyotika mentioned in Monday’s roundtable interview that it was because of Amazon Prime Video that she got a festival release for her film. “This is my 50th film and in my 20-year career, this is the first time my film is having a festival release (the film is arriving in time for Dussehra). Usually, these festive season slots are booked for hero-centric films. So I am happy that Udanpirappe, a so-called women-centric film, is being released to entertain families during the festival of the goddesses.”
The actor noted that she wants to continue working on films which women can feel good about watching. “I want women to feel that they are watching a part of themselves on screen and would like to do films that families can watch together.”
Udanpirappe, which was shot over 56 days in Thanjavur and Pudukkottai by cinematographer Velraj, will also be released in Telugu as Raktha Sambandham. The film has music by D Imman, while Ruben has handled the edits.
Akash Vaani, the upcoming web series starring actors Kavin and Reba Monica John in the lead roles, has been wrapped up, the latter announced on social media on Friday.
Produced by Kaustubha Mediaworks, the series is written and directed by filmmaker Enoc Able, who has previously assisted director Atlee on films such as Raja Rani, Theri, and Mersal.
Speaking about the upcoming series, a source close to the production unit, on condition of anonymity, said to Silverscreen India, “It is a romantic comedy which is related to friendship as well, and it is set against the backdrop of Chennai. The show will also be a treat musically, as music plays a crucial role. Guna Balasubramaniam has composed the music for the show. There will be about eight episodes, but the duration of each episode is not finalised yet.”
“The director began working on the script only about five months back. It was conceptualised as a series and planned for Kavin and Reba from the start. Most of the cast and crew members are close associates of the filmmaker,” the source added.
Other cast members include Sharath Ravi and Deepak Parmesh, who have both featured in Jagame Thandhiram, as well as Vinsa, Abitha Venkataraman, and Melvin Johnson in prominent roles.
The series, with cinematography by Santhakumar Chakravarthy, went on floors in August.
The upcoming project is currently in the post-production stage. “The makers have planned only this one season for now,” said the source, adding that the series will be released around November on a known streaming platform.
Akash Vaani is the debut web series for Kavin, who recently made his OTT debut with the Tamil horror film Lift that was released on Disney+ Hotstar. However, he has previously acted in Tamil television serials and appeared in the reality TV show Bigg Boss Tamil 3.
Netflix has ordered a new show titled That 90s Show, a spin-off of the popular American sitcom That 70s Show.
The new series, which has been greenlit for 10 episodes, will also be a multi-cam sitcom like its predecessor. Creators of the original hit show, Bonnie Turner and Terry Turner, and their daughter Lindsey Turner will be writing and executive producing the upcoming show.
Original cast members Debra Jo Rupp and Kurtwood Smith will be reprising their roles as Kitty and Red Forman. The actors are also serving as the new series’ executive producers. Gregg Mettler has been roped in as a writer and showrunner.
According to a Deadline report, there are expectations that other cast members like Mila Kunis (Jackie Burkhart), Ashton Kutcher (Michael Kelso), Topher Grace (Eric Forman), and Laura Prepon (Donna Pinciotti) will reprise their roles as guest stars in the spin-off.
Known for its pop culture references, That 70s Show told the story of six teenagers in the fictional town of Point Place in Wisconsin from May 17, 1976, to December 31, 1979. Rupp and Smith, who formed the older cast members, appeared as Eric’s working-class conservative parents.
That 70s Show ran for 200 episodes between 1998 to 2006 on Fox.
Following the success and cult following of the show, a sequel That 80s Show was announced by Fox. However, the show ran for only five months in 2002 and was subsequently cancelled.
Set in 1995, That 90s Show will tell the story of Leia Forman, the daughter of Eric and Donna (Grace and Prepon’s characters from the original series), who is visiting her grandparents, Kitty and Red Forman, in Point Place, Wisconsin. During her time there, she bonds with the town’s new generation under her grandparents’ supervision.
Before ordering That 90s Show, Netflix had been toying with the idea of a spin-off for many years. When the premise of the new show started gaining traction last year, the streaming platform quickly announced its interest in developing it.
Films like Sivakarthikeyan‘s Doctor and Panja Vaisshnav Tej‘s Konda Polam released in theatres this week, while Bhramam was an OTT release on Amazon Prime. The week saw films like Pushpa and Acharya firming up their theatrical release dates, further evidence that big banner films are set to release in theatres in 2022. For OTT platforms, shows and documentaries like House of Secrets: Burari Deaths help compensate for the lack of movies.
Silverscreen India brings to you a roundup of reviews of films that released this week, both in theatres and on OTT platforms.
The Nelson Dilipkumar directorial features an ensemble cast of Sivakarthikeyan, Priyanka Arul Mohan, Yogi Babu, Milind Soman, Redin Kingsley, and others. The story revolves around Varun, a doctor, who takes the law in his own hands and helps solve a case of kidnapping (and human trafficking), and the movie lightens up a seemingly heavy premise with generous does of comedy.
Sinndhuja of Silverscreen India, wrote that apart from the meticulous construction of frames in this otherwise bizarre comedy, “Nelson excels at this metered infusion of comedy at right intervals, lacking which, Doctor would have made us yawn or cringe or both.”
Ranjani Krishnakumar of Film Companionhad similar sentiments, while praising the film for its excellent casting, with Babu getting more screen space than usual for his “self-deprecating and insulting humour.”
For Haricharan Pudipeddi of Hindustan Times, a “terrific” action sequence in the first half of the movie was the highlight, along with Nelson’s humour that, he said, made every cliched sequence feel fresh.
Aswathy Gopalakrishnan of Silverscreen India, called the film a comedy “where the audience, that knows the plot’s fundamental secret, can laugh with the hero rather than wait with bated breath for the truth to come to light at the end.”
Anna MM Vetticad of Firstpost, called it faithful and praiseworthy, and added that the religious identity of the hero- that of a Christian- ” is in keeping with a beautiful, long-running aspect of Malayalam cinema: the normalisation of religious minorities as protagonists. With films headlined by Christian and Muslim protagonists, such films reflect the progressiveness of Malayalam cinema and the religious heterogeneity in Kerala,” she added.
For Vishal Menon of Film Companion, while certain instances bring back the charm of the Malayalam cinema from the 1980s and 90s, the long songs and the messy final act are a letdown.
The film deals with grief and how three different people – a husband, his wife and daughter – in the same family deal with it.
For Arunkumar Sekhar of Silverscreen India, the film is simple, yet portrays the need to “acknowledge that hope is very much the cornerstone that pushes all forward each day.”
Mugizh is a film that does not portray parents as “people with all the answers,” wrote Vishal Menon of Film Companion, lauding the movie for its minimal approach that does not shout out its noble intentions.
Ashameer Aiyappan of Firstpostwrote, “The cinematic language is consciously unintrusive, with liberal doses of pleasant music (Mugizh has music by Revaa) in the background.” However, she added that the film should have opted for a digital release, as with a runtime of a “mere 62 minutes, the experience ends quickly.”
“Konda Polam tells the story of Nallamala forest-based shepherds who are responsible for protecting their sheep from the dangerous attacks of the predators and the red sanders of the region,” according to IMDb‘s synopsis.
For Karthik Keramalu of Film Companion, while the film addresses issues surrounding environmental conservation, it is the conflict that drives the film without altering the landscape of the film.
Haricharan Pudipeddi of Hindutan Timeswrote that Konda Polam tries to juggle multiple conflicts, leading to a dilution of the overall impact. Both reviewers agree that while Singh and Tej’s on-screen romance hardly contributed to the story, it was the performances by actors like Sai Chand, and MM Keeravani’s music that stood out.
Apart from the aforementioned films, several Bengali films are expected to hit the screens, starting this week, because of the festive season of Durga Pooja. Some of the films include Rawkto Rawhoshyo, that will have its world premiere on Hoichoi. Other Pooja releases include Baazi and Golandaaj.

There has been no official announcement about this.

With a 30-day window period (between theatre and OTT release) used as the general format, the platform is still locking the date of release. Aha is quite flexible on that front and the film will release on the platform post-October 24.”
It is to be noted that besides opening to a good reception from the critics, the film also fared well at the box office post the second wave of Covid-19. Silverscreen India had earlier reported how Love Story brought families back to theatres. According to a report in the trade publication Box Office India. the film, with a first day collection of nearly Rs. 9 crores net, recorded the eighth-best opening among Indian films released since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic; and the best opening for a film since theatres reopened after the second wave of the pandemic. Love Story performed particularly well in Hyderabad and surrounding areas where theatres are allowed to operate at 100% capacity.
Actor Kathryn Hahn will appear in a spin-off series based on the Marvel show WandaVision, which is being developed by Disney+, according to Variety. Hahn will reprise the role of Agatha Harkness in the new show.
WandaVision is itself a spin-off based on the Marvel superhero character Scarlet Witch.
Described as a dark-comedy, the upcoming spin-off series is an outcome of Jac Schaeffer’s overall deal with Marvel Studios and 20th Television, that was sealed in May. Schaeffer, who served as the creator on WandaVision, will write as well as executive produce the upcoming show.
Apart from WandaVision, Schaeffer has to her credit films like Marvel’s Black Widow and the animated short Olaf’s Frozen Adventure.
In WandaVision, Hahn played the role of the witch, who was initially just introduced as Wanda and Vision’s neighbour. According to the Marvel comics, she serves as a tutor to the the likes of Wanda Maximoff aka Scarlet Witch. Agatha also survived the Salem Witch Trials and later led witches of Salem and Massachusetts to fight against their persecution.
Speaking to Entertainment Tonight after the final episode was aired in March, Schaeffer had said, “In the early stages, she functioned as more of a mentor, and then as we got into the room and started really breaking down the episodes, it became clear that having more of a proper antagonist would serve the structure really well, so she increasingly moved in that direction.”
WandaVision is Marvel’s first spin-off show for television. It was followed by the release of other shows like The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and Loki.
WandaVision‘s first episode aired on Disney+ on January 15. It featured Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany as Wanda and Vision, respectively, alongside Hahn, Debra Jo Rupp, Fred Melamed, Randall Park, and Evan Peters, among others.
WandaVision became Marvel’s first-ever show to be nominated for the Primetime Emmy Awards, and received nods in 23 categories, including Outstanding Lead Actor and Actress nominations for Bettany and Olsen, a Supporting Actress nod for Hahn, and one for Outstanding Limited Series.
Netflix will edit a scene in its show Squid Game, which features the phone number of a South Korean woman. The woman has been flooded with prank calls and text messages after her number was highlighted as a key plot point in the hit show, according toReuters.
“Together with the production company, we are working to resolve this matter, including editing scenes with phone numbers where necessary,” a statement from Netflix and Siren Pictures said on Wednesday, also requesting fans to refrain from prank calls or messages.
The phone number in question, which appeared on a mysterious invitation card given to potential players of a series of deadly children’s games, was one of many that featured on the show.
The owner is identified as Kim Gil-young, a woman who runs a business in the southeastern county of Seongju. She showed some of the messages she had received, including requests for invitations to Squid Game, to local broadcaster SBS during an interview that was aired in September.
She added that because she was unable to change her contact number due to professional reasons, she was offered a compensation of up to 5 million won.
Presidential candidate Huh Kyung-young posted on Facebook that he would buy the phone number for 100 million won to help Gil-young.
According to Reuters, Netflix and Siren had said earlier they deliberately showed only the final eight digits of the mobile phone number, and were unaware that, when dialled, the prefix would automatically be added to complete the number.
The cast of Squid Game comprises actors Lee Jung-jae, Park Hae-soo, Oh Young-soo, Wi Ha-Jun, Jung Ho-yeon, Heo Sung-tae, Anupam Tripathi, and Kim Joo-ryoung, among others.
The series has become the first South Korean show to top the charts in Netflix US, according to the streaming giant’s co-CEO Ted Sarandos. He also recently hinted that it might become Netflix’s biggest show ever.
Meanwhile, South Korean internet service provider, SK Broadband, sued Netflix on October 1, over non-payment of network usage costs for the traffic surge that resulted from the new show.
Telugu actor and politician Nandamuri Balakrishna, who was last seen in the 2019 action film Ruler, is likely to make his OTT debut by hosting a talk show on Aha, a source in the know told Silverscreen India on condition of anonymity.
“The talks are on for sure with Nandamuri Balakrishna and it will be a talk show. Things are progressing quickly. It will be a celebrity talk show, which will be conducted in Nandamuri Balakrishna’s style, featuring people he has known over the years and worked with,” the source added.
The source also said the upcoming show is being conceptualised for the Aha platform by someone in Bombay. “But they are looking for a local director to helm the show and the platform is in talks with filmmaker Krish Jagarlamudi to direct it.”
An official announcement is yet to be made.
On the film front, Balakrishna has the action entertainer Akhanda coming up next. The film, written and directed by filmmaker Boyapati Srinu, was wrapped up recently. The makers revealed on Tuesday that the film will release in theatres. A release date has not been locked yet.
The actor also is set to collaborate with filmmaker Gopichand Malineni for a Telugu film, tentatively called NBK 107. It will be an action entertainer shot in India and abroad.
Meanwhile, Balakrishna found himself caught in controversy in July for his comments on music composer AR Rahman and the Bharat Ratna award during an interview with a Telugu news channel. The actor received severe backlash after he said that he does not acknowledge the musician and added, “He gives a hit once in ten years and gets an Oscar for that.” He also said that he does not care about India’s highest civilian award, the Bharat Ratna, and compared it to his father NT Rama Rao’s toenail.
