Break the Silence: BTS Army Undeterred by Covid Precautions in Cinema Halls

An enthusiastic audience cheered the ritualistic ‘chant’ as the fourth documentary of Bangtan Boys (BTS) band- Break the Silence– flashed on the theatre’s screen at Inox multiplex in Quest Mall in Kolkata on Tuesday afternoon.

“Kim Namjoon! Kim Seokjin! Min Yoonji! Jung Hoseok! Park Jimin! Kim Taehyung! Jeon Jungkook! BTS!” they roared, naming members of the seven-member boy band on the first day of the film’s screening.

Theatre owners in the city said that for the first time since theatres reopened after the Covid-19-induced lockdown, seats of theatres were close to the stipulated capacity.

BTS, which has received international acclaim and a loyal legion of fans usually features R&B, reggae, hip-hop and EDM in their music. In their fourth documentary, the band members speak about the Love Yourself: Speak Yourself 2019 World Tour.

How did this group of South Korean boys set up a loyal fan base in India and ensure maximum ticket sales for their documentary during a raging pandemic? Silverscreen India takes a look.

The ‘army’

During the interval, fans sang BTS’s Dynamite.

Staff members at Inox were given instructions to keep reminding fans not to form big groups.

Attending the screening on the first day, post graduate student of Calcutta University Ayesha Tahreem Siddique explained that fans of  BTS call themselves the ‘BTS army’ to show allegiance and strength in numbers.

“This is my second BTS movie screening. The chit-chat and the noise that you see around is not nearly symbolic of how loud it can get. In 2018, the entire cinema hall was packed with people and banners. Fellow movie-goers were surprised,” said school student Tisha Barnal.

When the last three documentaries- Burn the stage (2018), Love Yourself (2018) and Bring the Soul (2019) were released, members of the BTS Army across India organised grand screenings with other experiences like flash mobs, free posters, placards and lights.

Although the fanfare was absent on Tuesday, those attending the screening at the hall made up for it in spirit.

Much of the action has shifted online, said fans.

Social media connection

According to members of the ‘Bangtan_Army’ a social media fan group with a presence on Instagram, the last three screenings before the pandemic were like a celebration.

This time, armies across India decided to not take the risk of organising an event with over 300 people, sources said. Fan pages have resorted to organising online events and ‘shoutouts’.

“We have been asking fans to take pictures of themselves at the screening and re-sharing them on our page instead,” a member of Bangtan_Army said.

Darsheeka Bipin Singh, a resident of Mumbai and one of the admins of Bangtan_India, one of the BTS social media fan page with pan-India coverage since 2016, said that although she was happy with the announcement of the movie release in September, she was disappointed for not being able to watch it in the theatre.

The Bangtan_India page cautioned movie-goers against going for the show because of increasing Covid-19 cases. In places where followers attended screenings, they advised caution and asked them to keep in mind the regulations set by the theatre as well as the government.

Kinkini Dasgupta, an admin of BTS Bengal Army, said that their first event in June 2018 saw 120 people coming together to watch BTS concerts recorded on DVD. However, since then, there has been a phenomenal rise in the number of fans.

During the last screening, followers of BTS Bengal was 3,000. Now it’s 4,300, said Dasgupta.

The army projects usually take place nationally. There are 37 regional BTS fan armies which are connected to the Bangtan India group, which provide broad guidelines of the events.

According to the online fan pages, most fans are aged between 12 and 25. “There is even a  separate section called the ‘Noona Army’ for fangirls above the age of 26,” said Dasgupta.

Until the pandemic, fan groups would collaborate with multiplexes, like Inox and PVR, for events before and after the screening.

This time, according to the press release issued by Inox, in Mumbai, the tickets were priced as low as Rs 150 due to the overwhelming response by the fan armies. Inox even changed its official logo and made it purple for a day as a tribute to fans, who associate the colour to the group.

Juhi Majumdar, a member of the BTS army, said that there is only one reason for the growing fan base in India- powerful music.

“In 2017, I was undergoing a low point in my life. I was introduced to BTS by a South Korean friend. Their songs give me goosebumps when I listen to them. It’s so inspiring,” she said.

Unlike most bands from South Korea, BTS was not introduced by a popular agency, she says. “It’s like rags-to-riches story and people love to hear that. They resonate and aspire along. It’s inspirational, if they can do, so can I,” says Dasgupta.

Dasgupta says that if BTS continues making powerful music, accompanying it with phenomenal beats, catchy tunes and perfectly choreographed dance moves, the number of people in the Indian wing of the BTS Army will surely grow.

She adds that she can already see the change with the increasing number of social media followers.

Bratya Basu’s Bengali Film Tara Now Available on YouTube

Bengali production house Shri Venkatesh Films on Thursday announced that 2010 film Tara, directed by actor-director-politician Bratya Basu, is now available for viewing on YouTube.

An SVF spokesperson told Silverscreen India that the production house will upload six more popular Bengali films on YouTube soon.

“We are opening up a channel on YouTube called SVF Movies. The films that we have rights for will be uploaded on this channel. There are six film in the pipeline so far. We just opened the channel and want to see the response since the films, although re-releases, are going to be proper uploads and not the pirated versions,” an SVF spokesperson said.

Aborto (2013) and Kathbirali (2020), are among the six popular films that SVF is going to start with.

Directed by Bratya Basu, Tara features Prosenjit Chatterjee, Paoli Dam, and  Tota Roy Chowdhury in lead roles. The film released on November 5, 2010.

The story revolves around two men, Jahangir and Manoj, who get entangled between a corrupt administration and the violent Maoist movement. The film talks about the existence of two factions, separated in water-tight compartment- the administration and those who oppose it, referred to as Maoists by the former.

Roy Chowdhury was last seen in the 2019 film Jaanbaaz and will next be seen in the Hindi remake of The Girl on the Train. A popular face on Bengali films and television, the actor is working on television serial Sreemoyee with Indrani Haldar in the lead.

Dam was last seen in the Netflix horror-fantasy film Bulbbul, which released earlier this year. Her upcoming projects include the Hindi suspense thriller Raat Baaki Hai.

Chatterjee was last seen in the 2020 film Nirontor that released on Zee5. He will be seen next in 3 Dev.

Tara is now available on YouTube.

Vijay Raaz Molestation Case: ICC Panel Set Up to Probe Charges

After actor Vijay Raaz was accused of molesting a crew member during the shooting of Sherni in Madhya Pradesh, the film’s director Amit Masurkar and producer Vikram Malhotra have set up an Internal Complaints Committee to probe the matter.

Raaz was arrested by Gondia’s Ramnagar Police on Tuesday morning after the crew member filed a complaint against him on Monday night. In her complaint, the crew member alleged that Raaz molested her at a hotel they were staying at. The actor was later granted bail later on Tuesday, following which he returned to Mumbai without completing his pending scenes in the shooting schedule.

“Vijay left for Mumbai on Tuesday after he was granted bail. He didn’t even return to the hotel where he had been put up. The production head informed the crew on Wednesday that Vijay won’t be resuming work. Though he had two scenes remaining, Vikram sir and Amit were certain that he should not be allowed on the set, in keeping with Abundantia Entertainment’s zero-tolerance policy for workplace harassment,” a source told Mid-day.

The actor has been booked under the Sections 354A and 354D of the Indian Penal Code.

“There are eye-witnesses from the crew who have spoken to us about the accusation being true,” Gondia Additional Superintendent of Police, Atul Kulkarni told The Indian Express on Wednesday.

Raaz was shooting in Madhya Pradesh for upcoming Vidya Balan-starrer film Sherni. The team was shooting for the film in the jungles of Balaghat in Madhya Pradesh. Shooting had resumed only two weeks ago after being stalled since March due to the Covid-19 outbreak.

While Raaz has appeared in several films, his breakthrough role was in Mira Nair’s Monsoon Wedding (2001). Known for his performances in Raghu Romeo, Delhi Belly, Dream Girl and Gully Boy, he is best known for his comic role in Run and the kauwa biryani scene. He was last seen in Gulabo Sitabo, Lootcase and in BBC’s web series A Suitable Boy.

Miss India Review: A Ridiculous Film that Makes a Joke Out of Women’s Empowerment

Director: Narendra Nath

Cast: Keerthy Suresh, Jagapathy Babu, Rajendra Prasad, Naveen Chandra, Naresh, Nadhiya

“I drink tea when I am happy and I drink coffee when I’m angry,” says the protagonist of Miss India, a Telugu language film written and directed by Narendra Nath. Unwittingly, this bland line captures the essence of the film, a trite saga of a woman who dreams about starting a business and accomplishes it.

The rise of feminism as an ally of brand marketing has thrown a hard challenge at our commercial filmmakers. How does a film stay woke without resembling that advertisement that places an empowered modern woman in a happy narrative where she gets everything she wants? Miss India is as formulaic as a fairness cream advertisement.

When we meet her first, the protagonist of Miss India, Manasa Samyuktha (Keerthy Suresh), resembles the empowered women in the abovementioned advertisements. Dressed in a bright silk saree, she is walking down the hall of her plush house in America which has walls adorned with her lifesize photographs. If this was an advertisement, there would be shots of her signing papers in her office and holding business conferences. But this is a feature film. So, Samyuktha takes the audience not to her conference room, but down the memory lane, to her “simple middle-class” childhood when she lived with her family in a palatial bungalow in rural Andhra Pradesh. A preposterous rags-to-riches story follows.

The film’s writing has the weight of cotton candy. Unable to be witty and complicated, it smothers the audience with lines from cheesy self-help books. To make a statement about feminism and woman empowerment, it centres itself on a young woman from an elite family, who goes from one grand house to another, who can afford to procure US visa overnight. The stakes and barriers are all too few.

Samyuktha has always wanted to be a businesswoman. In the pre-credits sequence, we see a 10-year-old Samyuktha announcing to her extended family that she will start a “business”. Cut to 10 years later, we see an adult Samyuktha repeating this line like she’s reading out from the pages of an old diary. Human beings, according to the film’s writer, are immune to changes. For someone with such a burning ambition, she takes a long time to decide what she wants to sell.

The narrative is haphazard; a pile of clichés. Rather than finding real challenges, the film puts Samyuktha in an absurd eggshell universe it creates out of pretensions. In the film’s world, chai, the regular Indian tea, is an alien drink in the US, the mention of which leave people dumbfounded. A customer at her parlour drinks the chai and instantly recovers from a voice problem. In a place bound by logic, Samyuktha’s little chai parlour should pose little challenge to anyone in a country full of expensive coffee shops and caffeine-addicts. But in this weird scheme of things, the Indian owner of a giant coffee chain (Jagapathy Babu) declares war on Samyuktha’s chai and does everything in his capacity to overthrow her.

The most feminist thing the film does is that it doesn’t give Samyuktha a male partner to share her success with. But in the same breath, the film pits a woman against another woman, to say the worst enemy of Samyuktha is not a man but a jealous member of her gender. Like many new Indian mainstream films like Secret Superstar, Miss India uses the Internet as a magic place where serious individual problems are magically resolved.

Miss India has a twisted understanding of poverty. In an early sequence, we see Samyuktha’s father, a banker, being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. A voiceover informs us that the family slips into poverty in a month. Although, we know that she has a grandfather (Rajendra Prasad) who served in the Indian military and is now serving the village as a self-appointed doctor whose only prescription for every ailment is a miracle tea. What about his pension? Why doesn’t the family rent out a portion of their sprawling bungalow and pay the bills?

Of course, the answer lies in the social system the film naively approves of. Miss India is, essentially, a film that endorses the variant of feminism that functions within the old Indian caste system and holds hands with capitalism. Immediately after her brother is offered a job in the US, the family migrates to San Fransisco and moves into another sprawling bungalow. Never in the film does Samyuktha face difficulty in finding money, thanks to her social capital. The empowered modern woman in Miss India doesn’t want to do away with traditional hierarchies in a business firm. Her success is expressed through acts of narcissism. She is a patriot who namedrops Mahabharata and Bodhidharma in casual conversations, who prefers silk sarees to Western suits, whose burning ambition is to introduce Indian chai and Indian culture to the Western world. She might be in a different country, but she is a flagbearer of “Make In India”, who sells a product that has now been irretrievably linked to India’s incumbent prime minister.

Like Nishabdham, which released on an OTT platform last month, Miss India features foreign supporting actors who can’t act to save their life. Mahanati (2018) might have fetched Keerthy Suresh the honours that she deserves, but it also seems to have landed her in a spate of poorly-written women-centric films. She is a charming and confident presence on the screen but Miss India asks nothing of her talent in underplaying. Her tenderness can barely balance out the film’s high-pitched ridiculousness.

The Witches: Anne Hathaway Apologises for Negative Portrayal of People With Disabilities

After Warner Bros’s apology for the portrayal of actor Anne Hathaway‘s character in The Witches, Hathaway also posted an apology on Thursday, after people with disabilities called out the film’s makers for its problematic depiction of the character.

In the film, Hathaway plays the role of Grand Witch, who appears to be missing two fingers from each hand. People with disabilities have pointed out the film has added to the stigma around disabilities, as her character appeared to be suffering from ectrodactyly, a condition of limb abnormality also known as ‘split hand’.

She uploaded a post on Instagram by the Lucky Fin Project, a non-profit organisation that raises awareness on people with limb differences, and wrote: “Let me begin by saying I do my best to be sensitive to the feelings and experiences of others not out of some scrambling PC fear, but because not hurting others seems like a basic level of decency we should all be striving for. As someone who really believes in inclusivity and really, really detests cruelty, I owe you all an apology for the pain caused. I am sorry. I did not connect limb difference with the GHW when the look of the character was brought to me; if I had, I assure you this never would have happened.”

Many people with disabilities pointed out that Hathaway’s villainous representation, with physical defects, might create a stereotype that specially-abled are abnormal or scary.

“I particularly want to say I’m sorry to kids with limb differences: now that I know better I promise I’ll do better. And I owe a special apology to everyone who loves you as fiercely as I love my own kids: I’m sorry I let your family down,” she added.

Directed by Robert Zemeckis, the film is based on British writer Roald Dahl’s 1983 novel of the same name.

“We the filmmakers and Warner Bros. Pictures are deeply saddened to learn that our depiction of the fictional characters in The Witches could upset people with disabilities, and regret any offense caused,” Warner Bros said in a statement, as per a report in Variety.

“In adapting the original story, we worked with designers and artists to come up with a new interpretation of the cat-like claws that are described in the book. It was never the intention for viewers to feel that the fantastical, non-human creatures were meant to represent them,” the statement added.

Calling out the production house on Twitter on Monday, Paralympic swimmer Amy Marren wrote that she was disappointed in the film and that it had come as a setback to the limb difference community and efforts to celebrating differences.

“I myself am a huge advocate of celebrating differences and especially limb differences. It’s not unusual for surgeons to try and build hands like this for children/adults with certain limb differences, and it’s upsetting to something that makes a person different being represented as something scary,” Marren wrote.

The Witches premiered on HBO Max on October 22.

The Girl on the Train: A Loyal Adaptation with a Few Key Changes

When director Tate Taylor’s film The Girl on the Train released in 2016, readers worldwide were still raving about the book it is based on. British author Paula Hawkins debuted with the novel of the same name the previous year, and its narration style and “unlikeable characters” made it an instant success. The book even earned praise from renowned authors like Stephen King.

While the psychological thriller book swiftly topped the charts as a best seller, the creators of the film retained the novel’s central theme and added elements to make the screen adaptation more suitable for the big screen.

Warning: Spoilers ahead

The context

The film, starring Emily Blunt as the protagonist Rachel, is more or less loyal to the book. The main plot is the same- alcoholic, unemployed Rachel aimlessly rides the train every morning staring into the suburban houses that she passes through. A divorcee, she can’t get over the fact that her ex-husband Tom (Justin Theroux) has moved on and got married to his mistress Anna (Rebecca Ferguson), and is now a father to a baby girl. During these train rides, she gets fixated on Tom’s neighbours- the perfect couple Megan and Scott Hipwell (Haley Bennett and Luke Evans) and she imagines their marriage and the lives they lead.

While she was married, she slipped into depression when she found out she was infertile and turned into an alcoholic. Her dependence on alcohol would make her turn violent and cause blackouts, something she had no memory of when she awoke. Obsessed with how Tom cheated on her, Rachel calls and harasses Tom and Anna every night, and again fails to remember these episodes when she wakes up sober.

Things change for the worse when Rachel spots Megan hugging another man and inadvertently gets pulled into an investigation when Megan goes missing and is later found dead.

The deviations

Despite retaining the crux of the story, the film’s setting is entirely different. The novel is set in London, while the film takes place in New York. Rachel is seen riding up and down the Hudson and getting off the Grand Central Station, where she spends the rest of the time drinking at the train station bar. In the novel, the houses are all identical, causing Rachel to get confused and disoriented, but the film shows them to be quite different from each other.

An alcoholic and depressed woman, whose narration is not entirely reliable due to her frequent alcohol-induced blackouts, the novel describes her as fat and undesirable, which the film adaptation gives a miss. However, considering the fact Rachel carries a deep sense of self-loathing, her descriptions about herself may not be accurate.

One of the biggest changes that director Taylor incorporated was toning down Scott’s abusive character in the film. Hawkins depicted Scott as a controlling, possessive, and emotionally abusive husband, suspicious about his wife’s loyalty. When he comes to know about his wife’s death, he enters into a complicated relationship with Rachel, as he mistakes her to be Megan’s friend from her art gallery.

In the film, it is easy to sympathise with Scott. When he finds out that Rachel had lied about how she knew Megan, he attacks her and storms out of her apartment. In the novel, however, he confronts her in his house and goes to the extent of locking her up in a room.

The scene where Rachel realises that Tom is the actual culprit, is what sets the film apart from the novel. Hawkins relies on Rachel recalling the actual turn of events to shed light on Tom’s true nature- a cheating, manipulative husband, who constantly gaslights people around him.

In the film, this gets highlighted when Rachel meets Martha (Lisa Kudrow), the wife of Tom’s former boss. When Rachel apologises for her drunken behaviour at a party in Martha’s house, which led to Tom losing his job (as Tom led her to believe), Martha informs her that none of that had indeed happened and that Tom lost his job because he had sexual relations with every girl in the office. This serves as the film’s turning point, where Rachel begins to put the pieces together and realises that Tom had killed Megan.

Minor changes

In order to establish Rachel’s instability and erratic behaviour, the film has a scene where she shoots a drunken video talking about how much she hates Anna and how she wants to kill Megan for cheating on her husband. This serves to confuse viewers and seems to depict Rachel as Megan’s supposed killer.

The film adaptation also merges the characters of detectives Gaskill and Riley into one (Alison Janey). Janey’s character is the lead investigator in Megan’s case and is far less sympathetic of Rachel.

Similarly, Rachel’s once-sympathetic roommate Cathy (Laura Prepon) is shown as more strong-willed in the film and gets far less screen time. Her boyfriend is entirely omitted in the film.

The ending of the book is also slightly altered. In the book, Rachel decides to stop frequenting her original train route and move on with her life. In the movie, however, Rachel comments that she is tied to Megan forever now and still takes the same route, but sits on the opposite side of the train.

The Girl on the Train incorporates some changes to bring the best-selling novel to screen, while consciously retaining the key elements that help in propelling the narrative forward.

The Girl on the Train has been remade in Hindi by director Ribhu Dasgupta, with Parineeti Chopra playing the role of Rachel. The film was expected to release this year but has been postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Mrigaya: Ankush Hazra Releases First Look of His Next Film

Bengali actor Ankush Hazra shared the poster of his next film Mrigaya on Twitter on Wednesday.

The actor wrote: “My next .. #Mrigaya PART-1 get ready for a thrilling experience in 2021.. need ur best wishes ..@darshanabanik @souvikb2009..

The thriller will be directed by debutant Souvik Bhattacharjee and will feature Ankush, Darshana Banik and Subrata Dutta in lead roles.

As per a report by The Times of India, Hazra will be seen playing the role of a Special Task Force (STF) officer and Banik will be portraying the role of his wife.

Speaking about his role and the film’s plotline, Hazra said: “In the beginning, we get to see that five closest of friends (Sam, Xo, Ricky, Ivy, and Jhora) disappear during a trip on a mysterious beach of Gokulpur. These five students are not just from rich families, but one of them has a political background and is a brother of the state youth minister. And the story takes a turn from there. I play the character of Anjan Sengupta, a cop from Special TaskForce (STF), who gets deputed for the missing case. Subratada plays the character of a local police officer Inspector Maity who is an unpredictable character, as we see he keeps hiding the testimonies. A number of questions arise as Anjan gets deeper into the case. Are they still alive or has anyone murdered them? Have they concealed themselves as they might have done something hideous? Is any drug supplier linked with them? The film revolves around all these questions. Added to that, I also feel that the audience will like Darshana and my on-screen pairing.”

Coincidentally, the film shares its name with the 1976 film (Mrigayaa) by Mrinal Sen, a pioneer of New Wave Cinema and award winning director Mrinal Sen. The film launched actors Mithun Chakraborty and Mamata Shankar and went on to win two National Film Awards.

Clarifying that the two films are unrelated, director Bhattacharjee told The Times of India: “This project has no connection with the Mrinal Sen’s classic Mrigayaa, nor is it a remake. The term mrigaya in my film literally translates into the chase or the hunt and my film’s storyline talks about hunting in every sense- physical, psychological, and social.”

Film critic and trade analyst Taran Adarsh shared news of the film on Twitter, and wrote that the film will go on floors from November 19. It will be shot in Odisha, apart from Kolkata.

The film will be bankrolled by STDS Entertainment.

Hazra was last seen in the 2019 film Bibaho Objijaan and has Bhoy and Magic in the pipeline.

Banik was last seen in the 2019 film Hullor. Also seen in Telugu film Aatagallu (2018), she will make her debut in Hindi films with the Emraan Hashmi-starrer Ezra.

INOX, PVR Offer Private Screenings to Increase Patronage

In a move to attract patrons, multiplexes INOX and PVR Cinemas are now offering private screenings where customers can book the entire cinema hall in selected centres.

The step aims to increase the low footfall being recorded in cinema halls after they reopened in several states.

While INOX first introduced to offer bookings for private screenings to host get-together parties, starting from Rs 2,999, PVR Cinemas followed the suit and introduced a package starting from Rs 1,999.

According to a Moneycontrol report, most of the cinema halls that have reopened are re-releasing old films, and the overall revenue stands between Rs 4-5 lakh. “We are looking at introducing new and innovative solutions that shall bring the patrons back to the theatres,” PVR Cinemas CEO Gautam Dutta told Moneycontrol.

Theatres across the country, as well as worldwide, were forced to shut down in March due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. The Central government permitted theatres to reopen on October 15  by adhering to Covid-19 safety protocols and with 50% seating capacity.

Theatres in New Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal reopened on the same day and recorded low footfall and new film releases.

In West Bengal, despite 10 new Bengali films releasing during Durga puja, theatre owners claimed that they could not attract audiences due to low patronage. Meanwhile, in Karnataka, while some theatres have reopened, a few film exhibitors and producers are in a tussle whether to reopen the theatres or not and in Tamil Nadu, producers have announced that no new releases will happen until the deadlock over VPF (Virtual Print Fee) charges, demanded by the digital service providers, gets cleared by theatre owners.

Meanwhile, films awaiting theatrical releases this year include Tillotama Shome’s Sir, Ranveer Singh’s 83, Akshay Kumar’s Prithviraj, Shemaroo Entertainment Limited production Pepper Chicken, David Fincher’s Mank, SVF production’s Dracula Sir (pan-India release), among others.

Maharashtra Cinema Halls and Theatres to Reopen from November 5 With 50% Seating Capacity

Cinema halls and theatres that fall outside the containment zones in Maharashtra will be allowed to reopen with 50% seating capacity from November 5, the State government announced in an order issued on Wednesday.

The State government is yet to release detailed SOP guidelines for the reopening of cinema halls.

“Cinema halls/theatres/multiplexes/drama theatres will be allowed to open with 50% of their seating capacity in areas outside the Containment Zones only with effect from November 5, 2020. No eatables will be allowed inside the Cinema halls/theatres/multiplexes/drama theatres. The SOP for the same will be issued by the Cultural Affairs Department and local authorities. The Cultural Affairs Department will take into consideration the SOP issued by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting,” the order read.

The announcement came as a welcome move for cinema hall and theatre owners whose businesses have come to a standstill for over six months.

Posting a screenshot of the virtual meeting held between Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray and owners of prominent multiplexes and single screens, a few weeks ago, executive director of INOX Group Siddharth Jain wrote on social media on Wednesday, “On behalf of the entire cinema exhibition industry we would like to thank @OfficeofUT&@AmitV_DeshmukhJi for allowing cinemas to operate in Maharashtra from 5th Nov. Looking forward to the big screens lighting up once again! #LightsCameraAction”.

The virtual meeting informed the proprietors that SOP guidelines regarding the functioning of theatres and cinema halls are being worked on.

“In a cinema hall, people are in a closed air-conditioned space for nearly two hours. Hence, we want to ensure complete cleanliness and sanitisation as well as physical distancing. There is a need to ensure only 50% seats are occupied,” Thackeray had earlier said in a statement.

Cinemas and theatres across the country have remained shut since March due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. In October, the Centre issued orders and SOPs for the reopening of theatres. While states like New Delhi, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Jammu-Kashmir, Goa, Chandigarh, West Bengal, Karnataka, and Punjab are operating with 50% capacity and other guidelines in place, other states, including Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu, have decided to keep cinema halls closed for a longer time. On Tuesday, the Tamil Nadu government issued SOP guidelines for the reopening of cinema halls from November 10.

Eeswaran Makers Claim Video Showing Simbu Holding a Snake Fake after a Wildlife Activist Files Complaint

The makers of Silambarasan‘s upcoming Tamil film Eeswaran said that a video, showing the actor holding a snake, was fake after a wildlife activist on Tuesday complained to the Tamil Nadu forest department officials.

The video shows Simbu picking up a snake from a tree and dropping it inside a gunny bag.

The complaint was filed against the filmmakers of Eeswaran by a Chennai-based activist. The complainant submitted the video and stills that were recently released. The stills show Simbu holding a snake that is around his neck.

Talking to Silverscreen India, Chennai Forest Range Officer Clement Edison said, “We have informed the producers that we need to conduct an enquiry and they have confirmed that they will come. They are currently busy with the film’s shooting and they will come for an enquiry once it is finished.” He also added that since the filmmakers have claimed that the video is fake, it cannot be confirmed if the actor is guilty of handling the snake illegally.

According to the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, snakes come under the Schedule II protection and are not allowed to be handled by outsiders. “If they want to handle snakes then they should have sought permission from the head of the department. Even if they did receive permission to handle snakes, there is no permission allowed for shooting,” said Edison.

The first look of the film was released last week. The poster featured Simbu standing in a field with a snake around his neck.

The film is bankrolled under Madhav Media and D Company banners headed by Balaji Kapa and KV Durai respectively. S Thaman will be composing the music for the film and Thirunavukarasu will be handling the cinematography.
