Ayushmann Khurrana Goes All Out In Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan; Trailer Out Now

A bankable star who plays only unconventional roles, in entertaining films set in small town India, with a simple message — could there have been a more perfect candidate to play Bollywood’s first big masala main man who’s ‘out’ and about?

Ayushmann Khurrana though is only one part of this jigsaw, the rest of the charm comes from the setting; the ignorant yet not-really-harmful parents, the music, the comedy of errors-ish plot, and of course the supporting cast.

It might be a huge leap to say this trailer shows that there’s already acceptance or that this movie will lead to acceptance. Or will have more people talking about queerness in small towns… But what is undeniable is that this will mark the beginning of something interesting. If (and there’s a big chance that it will be) this film does good numbers, the chances go further up.

But most importantly the biggest achievement of Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan will be in the area of representation. The fact then will be that fun, masala, box office dhamaka-wala cinema can have a male lead who is gay. Not necessarily just Kabir Singh type toxic masculinity.

The plot seems pretty much like any love story — boy loves boy, one boy’s parents disapprove, arrange his marriage with a girl, other boy lands up, and confrontation ensues. There’s a recreation of the famous train scene from DDLJ, Ayushmann wears a rainbow cape, examples from Mahabharata are given… The best lines in this trailer starring a stellar cast — Neena Gupta, Gajraj Rao (who were both in Ayushmann’s Badhaai Ho), and Jitu K, are about homophobia and a mother’s love.

The ‘Hacked’ Trailer Starring Hina Khan And Rohan Shah Is Unsettling: Out Now

The trailer of Hacked starring debutant Hina Khan and actor Rohan Shah is out now. The film helmed by Vikram Bhatt is being bankrolled by Amar Thakar, Krishna Bhatt, Jatin Sethi under their Loneranger Productions and is being presented by Zee Studios. Hina Khan who has become a household name after her television stints Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai, and Bigg Boss, is foraying into Bollywood.

The trailer features a desperate 19-year-old Rohan, yearning to win the heart of Sameera (Hina Khan) by going to any extent – making her stick to her schedules, guarding her car parking space and whatnot.

When she refuses to accept his love, he turns her life into a nightmare, hacking all her accounts and personal information. But it just doesn’t stop there. We also find him blackmailing several other girls, taking unsolicited pictures of them, and ultimately ruining their lives.

The two-and-a-half minute trailer keeps you glued owing to the tension prevailing right through. Hina Khan performs well and doesn’t seem to resemble a debutant in the trailer.

Hina will essay an editor of a fashion magazine in the film. The thriller also features Mohit Malhotra and Sid Makkar in important roles. The film has Prakash Kutty handling cinematography, Kuldip Mehan editing, music by Jeet Gannguli, Arko, Amjad Nadeem Amir, Chirantan Bhatt, and Sunny Inder, and Priya and Satya handling production design. Shabina Khan is choreographing dance with Abbas Ali Moghul for action sequences.

Director Vikram Bhatt known for horror films like Raaz and 1920 said, “I have put aside the horrors of the spirit world to talk about the horrors of the real world. And our vulnerable lives on the internet is one such horror. It just takes one hacker with enough motivation to ruin your life. Hacked is a film about a single woman and such an obsessed hacker”.

He added, “My association with Zee has been an old one. Way back in 1996, it was with Zee that I had my first hit film Fareb which was followed by some very successful albums with Zee music. I am once again delighted to have Zee Studios as my partner for Hacked. It’s a new beginning with my old partners.”

Recently, the first look poster of the film was released.

The film which began shoot last August is set to hit screens on February 7, 2020.

Priyamani Replaces Keerthy Suresh In Maidaan; Here’s Why

Maidaan, which is touted to be a true story about Indian football’s golden years, now sees a new addition to its acting roster. The Ajay Devgn starrer now features Priyamani, the National Award-winning actress who will play Ajay Devgn’s romantic interest in the film.

The role was initially to be played by Keerthy Suresh, who had even shot for the film for one day. However, the makers felt that since Keerthy has recently lost weight, she looked too young to play a mother in the film.

The makers of the film say that they do not want the film to look and feel inauthentic, so, they have tried to make sure that all elements of the film are true to life. The director, Amit Ravindernath Sharma, who is also a National Award winner, was very particular about the look of each character, hence the change in the casting. Keerthy Suresh and the makers of the film reportedly had an amicable parting over this matter, and have promised to collaborate together some time in the future.

Priyamani was most recently seen in the Amazon Original, The Family Man. Her role has won the actress a lot of praise. She will be seen next in the Telugu remake of Dhanush‘s film, Asuran and will be seen in Thalaivi in which she plays Sasikala.

Produced by Zee Studios,Boney Kapoor, Akash Chawla and Arunava Joy Sengupta, Maidaan directed by Amit Ravindernath Sharma of Badhaai Ho fame. The screenplay and dialogues are written by Saiwyn Quadros and Ritesh Shah respectively. The film is set to release on 27th November 2020.

7 Things In Love Aaj Kal 2 Trailer’s Graffiti That You May Have Missed

Imtiaz Ali’s new version of Love Aaj Kal, the 2009 Deepika Padukone and Saif Ali Khan starrer is making a comeback in 2020. Saif’s daughter Sara Ali Khan plays a character similar to that of Veer in the 2009 who looks borderline commitmentphobic and, prioritises her career over the idea of spending her life with one person for a lifetime. Kartik Aaryan, the Veer of 2020 shoulders the “aaj and kal” concept of Imtiaz, with a parallel story in the past.

The world wide web has mixed reactions to the trailer, Sara’s father Saif Ali Khan, also had a blunt reaction to the trailer of Love Aaj Kal 2

From Rockstar to Love Aaj Kal, Tamasha and Jab Harry Met Sejal, graffiti is a prime trope in Imtiaz’s style of storytelling. Love Aaj Kal 2 didn’t keep the director from placing hidden meanings in a rather clever graffiti.

We decode that one frame from the trailer below:

The quotes

These particular frames in the trailer of Love Aaj Kal 2, have a couple of quotes. The first two appear almost after half the trailer is over, the last one, is the ending slate of the video in the same colour scheme of the graffiti.

Don’t touch my soul with dirty hands”

“For those who come from nothing”

“It’s all about the oil, stupid”

‘Don’t touch my soul with dirty hands’ is a poem by Zebaish Shaikh. You can read the full poem here

‘For those who come from nothing’ is a classic canvas painting that is up for grabs here on society6.com.

It’s an easy guess that the first two are pointing towards Sara’s character arc in the movie, given that she wants to commit to her career rather than a person.

The imagery

If you move over the quotes and observe the frame from right to left. There’s a grim looking girl sitting in a lousy posture and staring at the ground with a bird next to it.

Drip of love and macaroons

Right next to it is a girl sitting on two macaroons, attached to a drip whose saline bag somewhat looks full of heart-like molecules. The macaroon could symbolise the fact that she’s in a sweet spot, there are hearts in the air, but she needs to be injected with another dose of love to overcome her commitment phobia.

The 90s song!

The yellow typography in devanagari says “Woh Pehli Baar Jab Hum Mile”. Imtiaz using a 90s reference could be his new trope, since he’s also used two Maine Pyaar Kiya references in the trailer.

Commitment phobia

The caricature next to that is of a woman vomiting hearts and the word SICK is written right next to her head. The quote, ‘Don’t touch my soul’ is right above her body and there’s a heart, with a diamond inside it.

The Tamasha reference?

That heart will instantly remind ardent Imtiaz Ali fans of the line ‘Heer liye dil mein, aur heer khoje veerane mein’ from Tamasha. This heart has a diamond (heera), symbolically ‘heer’ inside it. There’s love inside her heart, but she’s looking for it elsewhere.

The birds and the cages

The last left most corner of the frame shows a girl whose face is covered with a book and a bird sitting on the top of it.

Now, if you watch the trailer carefully from the beginning, there are bird cages in some of them, like the one below. What this graffiti could imply is — the journey of this girl from being grim, commitment phobic, falling in love, and then pondering over what she’s got herself into. Classic Imtiaz Ali story. The trailer also shows a similar looking heart in some more frames like this:

The crux of the stories he tells are camouflaged in his graffitis. He’s been telling stories of caged hearts, caged birds, commitment phobes for years. Whether you read the graffiti from right to left or left to right, it’s an infinite loop, just like the director’s movies.

With Chithi 2 Coming, Here Are Five Other 90s Serials We’d Welcome Back in 2020

Nithyashree Mahadevan, whose voice rang through every household in the 90s as the clock struck 9:30 pm, as she sang Kannin Mani, the title song for Raadhika’s breakthrough TV show Chithi, has made a comeback and how. Sun TV which is bringing the show back, realises the importance of nostalgia here. They tweeted the promo, calling out to 90s kids. The promos for the new edition of Chithi all feature Nithyashree’s voice, and tell us Raadhika will yet again play the quintessential middle class woman. One who will fight all odds. Chithi 2’s announcement came out of the blue and has stunned audiences. It also shows us why Raadhika remains one of the most astute television personalities of India. It was Chithi that set the mega serial biz running. It is now nothing short of an industry that supports thousands of artistes — actors, technicians, and launches talents. It will be interesting to see how Raadhika takes her own vision forward, by going back to square one. Chithi 2 will premiere on January 27 on Sun TV

Here are five other 90s serials we’d love to have, back on our screens.

Dekh Bhai Dekh

A superb ensemble crew of the who’s who of Indian cinema’s character artistes were assembled, under the same roof. What else would ensue but laughter and confusion, chaos and love. The Diwans’ joint family today, would be interesting and have newer challenges to face! It was produced by Jaya Bachchan.

Penn

Penn is the kind of show you’d expect Netflix to commission today. Suhasini Maniratnam’s eight-episode offering that aired on Doordarshan featured eight women protagonists. Each played by powerhouse Tamil artistes who were leading ladies then, Amala, Bhanupriya, Geetha, Revathy, Raadhika, Saranya, Shobanaa, and Suhasini herself. Penn was female gaze at its sharpest.

Vikram Betal

After watching Pushkar-Gayatri’s Vikram Vedha, we are convinced that a new, fun remake of Vikram Betal would not only be interesting in terms of the competition between two characters out to get each other, but also in terms of situating moral quandaries in 2020.

Marmadesam

Naga’s series had several seasons, was superbly researched and redefined the mystery genre in Tamil television. It too launched some of the best artistes in South Indian cinema today. Marmadesam married the intrigue of our past with the scepticism of the present perfectly. That the mystery was rooted in Tamil Nadu, in stories we’ve all heard about, made them accessible to everyone.

Ramani vs Ramani

This too was a Naga offering. The series came in two seasons, while one featured Babloo and Vasuki, the other featured Devadarshini and Ramji. The hook in both series is that it’s about a young kooky couple, with both husband and wife named Ramani.

Love Aaj Kal 2 Trailer, The Remake Starring Sara Ali Khan And Kartik Aaryan, Out now

Trailer of Imtiaz Ali’s Love Aaj Kal 2 starring Karthik Aaryan and Sara Ali Khan in lead roles is out now. It is a ‘remake’ of sorts by the same director using the same tropes as his previous Love Aaj Kal starring Sara’s father, Saif Ali Khan and Deepika Padukone, with songs that were iconic.

In that film, it is Saif who is obsessed with his career before he hits a dead end, and comes to face the reality that he’s really in love with Deepika, and there’s an old track featuring another Saif and his lady love. Here too, there is one in the present, between a career-obsessed Sara and Karthik Aaryan and one in the past for Karthik.

While the beginning of the trailer feels a bit ‘been there done that’, some of the best moments in the trailer comes towards the end, where Aaryan is pummelling a cop for using a bad word, while using one himself, the reappearance of familiar songs, Aahun Aahun and Twist, and the final conversation between the duo, begging the question is there more to this film than meets the eye.

Sara asks Aaryan if he’s attracted to women, and he says, yes. He asks her if she’s not attracted to men, and she says, yes. If this indeed turns out to be the plot twist, we may be looking at another mainstream film like Ek ladki Ko Dekha To Aisa Laga. Not sure if it will end up being a joke (considering the intimacy the two share) or just not important in the larger scheme of things.

When Saif was asked about the trailer in an interview with Indian Express his response was, well… Listen to it yourself.

Meanwhile, Simbu will feature in UR Jameel’s Maha opposite Hansika Motwani, the first look of which was recently revealed. Jameel had mentioned that the actor would feature in the film for nearly an hour, refuting the news that he would play a cameo in the film. He will also feature in the official remake of Kannada hit Mufti, directed by Narthan, co-starring Gautham Karthik.

He had also announced a trilingual Maghaa Maanaadu days after the news that he was dropped from Maanaadu. His father, actor-director T Rajendar told Silverscreen, “We are planning the film on a huge scale with a Rs 120 crore budget. It is an out-and-out entertainer like his previous films Manmadhan and Vallavan. It will release in Tamil, Hindi, and Telugu”.

He also added, “Direction is by Silambarasan TR and not by me, as some have speculated. The film will be produced by our company Chimbu Cine Arts, and will be a big project for us.”

Sekhar Kammula’s Film With Naga Chaitanya, Sai Pallavi, Titled ‘Love Story’

Naga Chaitanya and Sai Pallavi starrer NC19 is now Love Story. The announcement came with the first look poster of the film. Anand, Happy Days and Fidaa-fame Sekhar Kammula is helming the project with Amigos Creations presenting the film and Narayan Das K Narang and P Ram Mohan Rao producing it under their Sri Venkateswara Cinemas’ LLP banner. This is Sekhar’s first project with Chaitanya and second with Pallavi, who became a household name in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh after Fidaa, which marked her debut in the Telugu industry. The lead pair will also be seen together on screen for the first time.

Naga Chaitanya and Sai Pallavi’s characters seem to share an emotional moment in the first look poster.

Sekhar took to Twitter to release the first look poster.

Love Story is speculated to be a romantic musical. The movie began shoot last year in November in Hyderabad.

On the technical front, Pawan Ch is composing music, Vijay C Kumar is handling the camera, and Marthand K Venkatesh is editing. Bhaskar Batla and Suddala Ashok Teja have been brought onboard for penning the lyrics.

Both the actors will reportedly speak in the Telangana dialect in the film. Incidentally, Pallavi dubbed for Fidaa in the same dialect, and a video of the dubbing session is hugely popular on YouTube. This is Chaitanya’s 19th film, and he will be seen as a village youth who migrates to the city in search of a livelihood.

A video titled ‘The World of #NC19’ featuring glimpses of NC’s character in the film was released on his birthday. He is seen as a responsible boy-next-door bubbling with energy.

Following the tremendous success of Fidaa, Sekhar Kammula had started work on a youthful entertainer, but the project that was supposed to star newcomers was dropped since he was not very happy with the script, it was reported.

Team Thalaivi Unveils Arvind Swami’s Look To Mark MGR’s Birth Anniversary

On the occasion of 103rd birth anniversary of Late Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MG Ramachandran, the first look of his character in the film Thalaivi has been unveiled. Aravind Swami stars as the yesteryear matinee icon, and took to social media to share the images and teaser of his role in the film.

The makers reportedly felt that the late CM’s birth anniversary was the appropriate occasion to pay tribute to an iconic person in the state’s politics and cinema. The director of the film, Vijay, said, “As I have said before, it’s an honour for me to be getting an opportunity to direct a film like Thalaivi. To look at the lives of legends who have been instrumental in shaping Tamil Nadu.” In the video that was released Arvind Swami’s recreation of MGR’s iconic ‘Naan ungal veetu pillai’ song is perfection.

The director also touched on the casting process. He said, “One of the more challenging parts of taking on this project was casting the roles. Once Kangana Ranaut was on board to play the late CM, Dr J Jayalalithaa, the task ahead to cast Dr MGR was difficult too, since he is such a revered person even now. I felt that Aravind Swami would look perfect.”

The actor’s resemblance, and posture to the late politician is unmistakeable, and it is something even the makers echo. According to the director, “We are in awe of the way in which he is breathing life into this character. He has spent a lot of time getting to know the late legend.”

Produced by Vishnu Vardhan Induri and Shaailesh R Singh for Vibri Motion Pictures in association with Karma Media & Entertainment, Thalaivi will release worldwide on 26 June 2020.

Vishnu Vishal Pens Emotional Letter On Tackling Depression

Vishnu Vishal, who was last seen in the action-comedy Silukkuvarupatti Singam, penned an emotional letter on dealing with alcoholism and depression. Vishnu wrote about how when his professional life was going smoothly, in 2017, his personal life was falling apart. Being separated from both his former wife and son, Vishnu says, took its toll on his emotional well-being as he took to the bottle. Then came an injury, work pressure, bad release dates, his own production house suffered losses… Following eight films of his being dropped, weight gain… “I felt like I had hit rock bottom,” he says.

When the enormity of it all sunk, as his father retired, Vishnu decided to take control. This is refreshing from a mainstream Tamil actor. Writing a note to let everyone know that part of taking control is seeking help. “I reached out for help, started therapy and underwent treatment for depression.” He says he, “started working out under a professional trainer, started eating healthy, restricted alcohol, practiced yoga… I started focussing on myself and my work.”

With before and after pictures Vishnu showed how he managed to go from not being able to do to a single push up on day 1 to becoming 16 kilos lighter, infinitely stronger and shooting for his next film FIR, with four more films lined up. “Physical health improves mental health,” he said, echoing what a lot of research points to.

He called this the Vaaranam Aayiram way, referring to the Gautam Menon film in which the protagonist played by Surya fights similar circumstances off with physical fitness.

‘Kurudhi Aatam’ First Look Features A Protective Atharvaa

The first look poster of Atharvaa starrer Kurudhi Aatam is out now. The film is helmed by 8 Thottakal fame Sri Ganesh and jointly bankrolled by IB Karthikeyan’s Big Print Pictures and T Muruganantham’s Rockfort Entertainment. This marks the first production of Rockfort Entertainment and the second association of Big Print Pictures with Sri Ganesh after his previous and first outing.

Atharva is seen carrying a young girl, Divyadarshini on his shoulders in the first look poster. His not-so-serious face is found to bleed and his hand is bandaged. The cuts on his face have been aesthetically drawn by the designer, making it seem like paint marks.

Big Print Pictures took to Twitter to release the poster.

A report on Times of India read, “The film talks about two disparate men meeting by accident and the friendship they develop. The film will delve into the affection Atharvaa and child artiste Divyadarshini shares. Certain circumstances will put that girl in trouble and that’s when Atharvaa’s character comes into play.”

The action-thriller based in Madurai will see Priya Bhavani Shankar opposite the actor. Apart from the lead pair, Radhika Sarathkumar and Radha Ravi also play important roles. On the technical front, cinematography is by Dinesh Purushothaman, editing is by Anil Girish, art by Kumar Gangappan and music by Yuvan Shankar Raja. While Vicky is choreographing stunt, the dance master’s name hasn’t been mentioned by the makers.

“I have always been a fan of Yuvan sir and Raaja (Ilaiyaraaja) sir’s music. To have Yuvan sir compose music for my second film is a great feeling. My film is set in Madurai and it’s a thriller. The background score is the soul of the movie, and Yuvan sir has set such high standards with his previous outings. I felt that with his work, he would bring in the effect that I needed. For me, there was no other option. I felt that Yuvan would be the only person who would understand the story and write the music accordingly,” said Sri Ganesh who added, “He was very quiet after I was done narrating the story. I had held my breath throughout his silence. He later told me that he decided to go for it fifteen minutes into the story. It was such a relief when he finally said yes.”

After much delay, the film will complete shoot by the end of the month and hit screens for summer.

Here is the first look poster.

Meanwhile, Atharvaa will also feature opposite Anupama Parameswaran in an untitled film by director Kannan and in debut director Barnesh’s Othaikku Othai opposite Sri Divya. While the former is still in production, the latter is in the post-production phase.

Big Brother Review: A Passive Mohanlal Leads This “Thriller”

It looks like director Siddique has finally scraped the bottom of the barrel to make a movie that makes his abominable Ladies And Gentleman (2013) seem like a work of art. If in the future, he goes further down and discovers scarier depths of bad film making, it should duly be recognised as an accomplishment.

Big Brother, in simple terms, is a nightmare that unfolds in 165 minutes, that drains an unsuspecting movie-goer of energy and the will to live. It is a collage of badly-made spoofs of movies such as Highway, seemingly put together by someone who doesn’t have the slightest understanding of how human beings behave in life. The cinematography, music, and production design are shabbily executed, as though no one cares about the audience.

The film starts off as a family drama. Sachithanandan (Mohanlal), the eldest son of a Mangalore-based family has returned home after spending 24 years in prison. Since, for no reason cited, none of his family members had met him in prison over the two decades and hadn’t even sent him a postcard or a family photograph, they come forward one by one and introduce themselves to him. “I am your younger brother. The one whom you carried on your shoulders and fed with your own hands…”

What ensues is a Shawshank Redemption kind of situation. Sachi has trouble adjusting to the new surroundings. Siddique strips the situation of the last drop of empathy and logic and creates misplaced jokes out of the man’s social anxiety.

Immediately after reaching home, he is forced to participate in a group dance staged as part of a wedding celebration. Given the cheap music and mediocre dance choreography, it should surprise no one when Sachi tries to run away from the scene.

No one in the household, neither the beloved father nor the younger brother who is a doctor, behaves like a sensible individual, offering Sachithanandan (and the audience) a humane treatment. Everything is incomprehensibly haywire in this movie.

One of the central themes is the human rights violation inside the country’s law and order system. Sachithanandan opens up to his family one day about how he and many of his fellow prisoners were used by the police in high-risk commando operations, as a sort of suicide squad. This could have been a significant subject to pay attention to, hadn’t Siddique been so socially blind.

The director hasn’t, in many decades, dealt with stories of non-elites, the people from vulnerable social classes whose chances of falling prey to the corrupt system is higher than that of everyone else. In Big Brother, he erases the poor and the powerless from their story and plants an upper-class Hindu family in the picture.

Sachi’s family lives in a palatial house spread over a large compound, with several cars and a squad of domestic help. His younger brother is married to the daughter of the city’s police commissioner. Why and how this family was denied the right to meet Sachi at least once during his prison sentence, or how the scion of this rich and powerful family fell victim to police brutality is incomprehensible.

The antagonists in the film are the members of a drug cartel who, again without a logical explanation, invest a lot of energy in stalking Sachi and making his life hell. This part, set up like a crime-thriller, is a silly snooze fest, devoid of a single intelligent moment or a dialogue that makes the characters seem a little interesting.

Arbaaz Khan plays Vedantam, a Malayali IPS officer in Karnataka cadet who has a penchant for encounter killings. There couldn’t have been a better movie for Khan to make his Malayalam debut, for his thoroughly non-existent acting skills are in perfect sync with the movie’s utterly poor and unimaginative characterisation.

This movie bears witness to the coming of age of a pet project Siddique has been working on over his films post-2000—the faux romantic plot-tracks where women who are barely 22 pursue men well past their fifties, played by Mollywood’s favorite superstars.

In Ladies And Gentlemen, Mamta Mohandas is a newly graduated engineering student who has to bring an alcoholic widower (Mohanlal) back to normal life by pulling him into marriage. In Chronic Bachelor, Rambha plays a college-goer who goes all out to seduce a middle-aged businessman leading a semi-hermit lifestyle (Mammootty) who takes absolutely no interest in the sight of the young woman sending sly sexual invitations from the balcony next door.

In King Liar, Siddique challenged the audience’s intelligence by presenting Dileep and Madonna Sebastian as former school-mates and lovers.

In Big Brother, Mohanlal’s Sachithanandan who shows no interest in women or material life, has to ward off flirtatious advances from a young girl (Mirna Menon). She is the daughter of a Mangalore-based don (actor Siddique) whose characterisation is a bunch of silk night robes and a white wig.

At one point in the story, Sachi and his gang kidnap her. But it would be a long time before she realises that she’s been kidnapped and not taken on an off-beat pleasure trip. She laughs and shares jokes with Sachi’s gang members, hugs trees and embraces life on the road, parodying Alia Bhatt in Highway. Nothing about this plot-track—the actors’ performances or Deepak Dev’s romantic track—is staged with the slightest degree of grace.

In Big Brother, Mohanlal, the veteran actor of many national and state awards and owner of a blog named The Complete Actor, could make a wooden doll look like a better performer. He’s ineffective as both, a star and an actor, and most of all, he looks disinterested in the proceedings around him.

The sight of a supporting cast comprising of Vishnu Unnikrishnan, Tiny Tom, Irshad, and Anoop Menon trying to cheer up scenes in the presence of a passive Mohanlal are reminiscent of the famous comic scenes from Chandamama (1999). If nothing else, Big Brother pares down and exposes the sad reality of Malayalam cinema’s superstar myth.

IT Raid At Actor Rashmika Mandanna’s House

The income tax department is conducting a search and seize operation in south Indian actor Rashmika Mandanna’s home. Mandanna has acted in films like Geetha Govindam, Dear Comrade, Sarileru Neekevvaru (running now in theatres), and many Kannada films.

The 23-year-old’s home in Virajpet in Kodagu district is where the IT raid is underway. The Hindu reported that “A team of IT officials from Bengaluru landed up at the house at around 7:30 a.m. There is no information whether Rashmika is in the house or not.”

The Newsminute has reported that “Income Tax Department sources say that search operations are underway at Serenity Hall, owned by Rashmika’s father Madan Mandanna and also his office premises.”

The department reportedly suspects Mandanna has evaded tax. The Newsminute report also says the actor had only yesterday said, ” I am not the highest paid actor. I am just starting off in the film industry. When people say I am the highest paid actor in Sandalwood, I wonder where the news is coming from. I don’t have any money in the bank. I still feel like a debutant.”

‘Marriage Story’ Review: The Stories We Tell And The Ones We Won’t And Can’t In Love And Heartbreak

Marriage Story is as much about marriage as it is about stories. The film opens with the two protagonists telling us their version of a part of the story. It sounds like the opening of a love story. She is clumsy but loves to play. He picks up after her and is a great dad. Yet when the reading is over, you realise these are possibly the only nice things these two people will be saying to each other and other people, about their marriage. They have written these things to read to each other ahead of the separation (but don’t read it). Parts of Marriage Story have Woody Allen-esque vibe. The film opens with old-worldly music and Scar Jo looking lost on stage. (She looks just as lost in Vicky Cristina Barcelona, but here she’s carrying the weight of a marriage in which she does not feel seen).

Noah Baumbach, the director, has rubbished murmurs that the film is autobiographical and is based on his divorce (with Jennifer Jason Leigh). He also said that he showed Leigh the movie and it has her blessings. These murmurs make the film interesting, only because of the way the story and the stories within this story are told.

Marriage Story makes all the right noises about the woman (Scarlet Johanssen as Nicole), and her feeling un-seen and becoming invisible in the marriage. And yet, it feels like it is constantly making you want to pick a side, and preferably the man’s — Adam Driver as Charlie. The lawyer who represents Nicole (Laura Dern as Nora Fanshaw who mouths some of the best lines in the film; sample this “his genius was an intangible asset built during the marriage”), explains this in a meta speech in the film. About how the Judeo-Christian institution lets the guy off the hook no matter how sloppy (because God is the father and he isn’t around here anyway), but the mother can be no less than divine (she gives birth as a virgin and holds her dead son’s body…) Is this why I found myself feeling a bit more sympathetic to him? It could also be because we hear her speech about him and why she likes him twice. At the beginning, and the end.

Nora also breaks the marriage’s failure down with the clarity only an outsider whose feelings aren’t involved can in one negotiation scene. She confronts Charlie about how he calls something a ‘deal’ between the couple when it is something he wants, and a ‘discussion’ when it is something she wants.

For Charlie, the divorce and Nicole’s insistence of keeping their son in LA (whereas they’ve lived their entire marriage in NY) is a battle, he must win. Nicole insists she’s already lost because she wanted to be married. You have merged with your selfishness so much that you can no longer identify it as selfishness, she screams in the film’s big climactic scene that showcases a showdown between the two actors. It’s just them inside a room, finally, saying the kind of things that are said only in marriages. Good, bad, dead or alive.

Marriage is a kind of story, the film suggests. When it works, we tell it one way and when it doesn’t we tell it our way. Lawyers who work on divorce will agree that once the marriage ends, the narrative is important. That’s what Nicole and Charlie’s lawyers set out to do as well. Whose will we buy?

From the quirky haircuts Nicole gives them all, to some of the scenes in the film (like the one where the court-appointed observer Nancy Katz — a superbly deadpan Martha Kelly, comes to see father and son or the Earth mother shooting scene in LA with a flirty grip), there’s an indie verve to many parts of the film. But what elevates Marriage Story truly — apart from the performances that feel lived in — is the weight of heartbreak. It is not all fluff and quirk. While it’s a great ‘talking’ film, that has good old fashioned well-written conversations, there’s also a lot happening outside. Doors closing between people. Photographs replaced in frames. An ex-husband dressing up as a ghost at Halloween. An uncontrollably weepy Nicole goes to bed, seconds after telling Charlie she cannot cry… on stage.

Marriage Story is an interesting movie that arrives looking like a classic. It’s an instant classic, no doubt because it combines meticulous art with heartbreak. Is it a real classic? I can’t make up my mind yet.
