Adipurush: Saif Ali Khan Apologises for His Statement on Raavan After Backlash
Saif Ali Khan, the Hindi actor, issued a statement on Sunday apologising for his recent comment where he said that his upcoming film Adipurush will show the “humane” side of Raavan. In the statement, the actor said that it was never his intention to hurt people’s sentiments, reported ANI.
The actor faced criticism after he said in an interview with Mumbai Mirror, that Adipurush will attempt to “justify” Raavan’s actions. “It’s interesting to play a demon king, less strictures in that. But we will make him humane, up the entertainment quotient, justify his abduction of Sita and the war with Ram as revenge for what was done to his sister Surpanakha by Lakshman, who cut off his nose,” he told the daily.
Soon after, BJP leader Ram Kadam wrote on Twitter, “If Adhipurush plans to show Ravan in positive light and justify the inhuman act of abduction of Sita Maa, we will never allow that to happen. Hope better sense prevails (sic).”
The actor also received criticisms from Prabhas fans who asked the director, Om Raut, to replace Khan with another actor.
Actor #SaifAliKhan makes an extremely shocking statement regarding his forthcoming film Adipurush. Saif who plays Ravan’s character says Ravan’s abduction of Sita Maa will be justified in the film. Ravan’s humane side will be shown and his war against Sri Ram will be justified.

“I would like to sincerely apologise to everybody and withdraw my statement. Lord Ram has always been the symbol of Righteousness & Heroism for me. Adipurush is about celebrating the victory of good over evil and the entire team is working together to present the epic without any distortions,” Khan further said in his statement, according to ANI.
Adipurush, starring Prabhas and Khan, is set to release in theatres on August 11, 2022, simultaneously in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada. Touted to be an action drama, the magnum opus will be a 3D feature film based on the Sanskrit epic Ramayana.
Khan and Raut have previously collaborated in the Hindi historical action film Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior, which released earlier this year.

Mukherjee’s death comes a few weeks after the passing away of legendary actor Soumitra Chatterjee. They had acted together in the film Joi Baba Felunath. Talking to The Times of India, Mukherjee’s daughter Rina Mukherjee said that her father had cried while watching Chatterjee’s last journey. “Tears rolled down his cheek while he clasped my hand. After some time, he got up and went back to his bedroom. When I asked him if he wanted to see him one last time, he said no. Actually, my father could never see anyone on the deathbed. He always wanted to remember the happy moments,” she told the publication.
Mukherjee has worked in critically acclaimed films like Ashani Shanket, Ganashakti, Mrigaya, Patalghar, and many others along with television shows like Poush Phaguner Pala and more.
RRR: Alia Bhatt Joins Cast Of SS Rajamouli’s Telugu Film in Hyderabad
Alia Bhatt has joined the cast of SS Rajamouli‘s RRR or Roudhram Ranam Rudhiram in Hyderabad on Monday. The Telugu period drama, based loosely on the lives of two tribal leaders, marks Bhatt’s Telugu cinema debut. RRR will be a multilingual film with a pan-India release in 2021.
The actor landed in Hyderabad on Sunday and shared the news on social media.
The film’s official Twitter handle announced her arrival as well.
A very warm welcome to our dearest #Sita, the supremely talented and beautiful @Aliaa08 on to the sets of #RRRMovie! 🌟❤️#AliaBhatt pic.twitter.com/R7fSMkEkAd

Reportedly made on a budget of Rs 450 crore, RRR stars Junior NTR, Ram Charan, Alia Bhatt, Ajay Devgn, Shriya Saran, Alison Doody, Olivia Morris, and Ray Stevenson in prominent roles. The film will release in five languages — Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, and Hindi.
RRR revolves around fictional events in the lives of two freedom fighters, Alluri Sitaramaraju and Komaram Bheem. Both fought for tribal rights, Sitaramaraju against the British, and Bheem against the Nizam’s rule in Hyderabad.
Earlier in November, the Telangana BJP State president and Karimnagar MP Bandi Sanjay Kumar had threatened to burn down theatres if RRR depicted Bheem (played by Junior NTR) wearing a skullcap. Kumar claimed that not depicting Bheem as a Hindu would “[undermine] the sentiments of adivasis“. However, the claim that Komaram Bheem was a Hindu has been rejected outright by the adivasi community.
SS Rajamouli, who has not worked on a film since the Baahubali films, had launched RRR in 2018. Rajamouli said this film would not be a biopic, “My film will not dwell on the stories of their rebellion that we already know. But, it will focus on what would have happened if they had met during their self-imposed exile and became friends.”
Shooting for RRR had begun in 2019 but came to a halt due to the Covid-19 lockdown. On October 5 this year, the cast and crew had resumed shooting in Hyderabad.
A video uploaded by the team on YouTube on October 6 showed the team shooting with Covid-19 safety precautions.
Music composer MM Keeravaani, who worked with Rajamouli on Eega (2012), and the Baahubali films, is also working on this film, along with editor Sreekar Prasad and cinematographer KK Senthil Kumar.
According to earlier reports, Alia Bhatt agreed to RRR despite having a number of Hindi films in the pipeline as she has been keen to star in a Telugu film.
Erode Soundar, Writer and Director, Dies at 63
Erode Soundar, veteran Tamil cinema writer and director, died at a private hospital in Tamil Nadu on Saturday after suffering from kidney-related complications. He was 63.
According to a report by the Indian Express Tamil, Soundar, who had been suffering from kidney-related complications for five years, was admitted to the hospital for dialysis. He then experienced breathing difficulties and was shifted to the intensive care unit. He failed to respond to treatment and died at 1.35 pm.
Speaking to Silverscreen India, editor V Jaisankar who has worked with Soundar in several films, including Simmarasi (1998) and Ayya Ullen Ayya (2020), said, “He was a very knowledgeable person and had an in-depth knowledge of stories and dialogues. He was basically a writer but also directed well. Working with him was tension free. He was always open to suggestions and input from others, despite his experience.”
Calling Soundar a good human who was always inclined to be helpful, Jaisankar said, “I have worked as an associate editor in Nattamai and Muthal Seethanam. He was at his peak during that time (the ’90s) and worked closely with KS Ravikumar. He was a down-to-earth person and easily adapted to the transition from film to digital.”
Soundar’s first stint in the Tamil cinema industry was as a writer in the 1991 Tamil action-drama film, Cheran Pandiyan. Not only did it prove to be a hit at the box-office, it also won Sounder two State awards, the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Dialogue Writer and the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Story Writer.
Cheran Pandiyan was directed by KS Ravikumar and starred Sarathkumar and Vijayakumar. Soundar continued to collaborate with Ravikumar as a writer and went on to work in many Tamil drama films, including Puthum Pudhu Payanam (1991), the blockbuster Nattamai (1994), which starred Sarathkumar and Kushboo, and Samudhiram (2001), which starred Sarathkumar again.
His collaboration with Sarathkumar created a strong partnership. A milestone for the duo was when Soundar directed the 1998 Tamil drama film Simmarasi, with Sarathkumar and Kushboo in the lead. The film opened to great success and reviews, and won Sarathkumar the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Actor.
Soundar has also written the remakes of his films in other languages. This includes the 1992 Telugu film Balarama Krishnulu (a remake of Cheran Pandiyan), the Kannada films Simhadriya Simha (2002) (a remake of Nattamai) and Paramashiva (2014) (remake of Samudhram), and the 2003 Bengali film Kartabya (a remake of Samudhram).
Soundar has also been an actor. He acted alongside Kamal Hassan and Rajinikanth in Dasavathaaram (2008) and Lingaa (2014) respectively.
His last film was the 2020 Tamil film Ayya Ullen Ayya which he wrote and directed. It stars KS Ravikumar, Livingston, Manobala, and Nalini.
He is survived by his wife and two daughters.

Maha Samudram, described as a “love and action drama,” also stars Aditi Rao Hydari, Sharwanand and Anu Emmanuel. This is the team’s first collaboration. Hydari was cast as the female lead in October after the filmmakers considered several names and felt she would be the best choice. Subsequently, Anu Emmanuel was cast in what the filmmakers termed a “significant role,” without giving additional details as yet.
This is Siddharth first Telugu film after a hiatus of eight years. He was last seen in the 2019 Tamil film Aruvam, a revenge drama about adulteration in food products.
Maha Samudram is being produced under the banner of AK Entertainments. Chaitan Bharadwaj is the music composer for the film while Praveen KL will handle the editing.
On November 14, Siddharth had released the theme poster for the film, and captioned it “I’m mightier than the wind and scarier than the storm! Who are you? Here’s the theme poster of our epic Telugu saga #Mahasamudram.” Set in Vizag, the theme poster of the film comes with the tagline “An Immeasurable Love.”
Maha Samudram is also Siddharth’s second shoot after the Covid-19 lockdown. He has been shooting for the Hindi thriller web series Escaype Live since October-end, “without a break after a long break” due to the Coronavirus pandemic, he said on social media. His co-stars for Escaype Live include Shweta Tripathi and Swastika Mukherjee.
Bhupathi had announced Maha Samudram earlier in September this year. No official announcement has been made on the release date of Maha Samudram yet. It will release in both Telugu and Tamil.
Deepa Mehta’s ‘Funny Boy’ Criticised by Ilankai Tamil Groups For Distorted Tamil And Tone-Deaf Casting
Funny Boy, Academy Award nominee Deepa Mehta‘s movie adaptation of Toronto-based author Shyam Selvadurai’s 1994 novel by the same name, has faced criticism from the Ilankai Tamil (the largest Tamil minority group in Sri Lanka) diaspora after the trailer of the film was released in October 2020. The community has criticised Mehta’s film, which was chosen to be Canada’s official entry for Oscars 2021 in the international feature film category, for the “erasure of Tamil identities”, and lack of Tamil representation in a film about the Ilankai Tamil community.
Last week, the Queer Tamil Collective, a collective of queer Tamil artists, activists, and educators, launched an online petition opposing the film and Mehta’s “irresponsible filmmaking practices”. The petition has garnered over 2,000 signatures. “Mehta’s Funny Boy insults Tamils with the sloppy Tamil spoken in Funny Boy while arrogantly submitting the film as a Tamil language contender at the Oscars,” reads the petition which also criticices the filmmakers for not putting in any effort into casting Ilankai Tamil actors. The petition calls out Mehta for collaborating with Sri Lanka’s “genocidal” regime and accuses her of unacceptable “casting practices, rendering of Tamil history, language, and representation.”
But the problems with Mehta’s Funny Boy run deeper than just lack of representation and inaccuracy of the language used in the film, say Eelam Tamil activists, artists, and writers. One especially thorny issue has been the casting of actors that belong to Sri Lanka’s majority Sinhalese in some of the lead roles.
In response, Mehta has said that it was more important for her to represent the queer community correctly by choosing an openly out actor, be it Tamil or Burgher or Sinhalese, and has cited difficulties in finding an openly out Ilankai Tamil actor to play the role of the lead. This response has been met with anger and disappointment from the Tamil community, many of whom have accused Mehta of handling their concerns dismissively.
What Funny Boy, The Book, Means To The Eelam Tamil Community
Funny Boy is the story of a queer, upper-class Tamil teenager, set against the background of the Black July riots of 1983 in Sri Lanka that resulted in the death of between 400 and 3,000 Tamils and triggered a bloody civil war between Sri Lanka’s Sinhalese majority and the Tamils that lasted 26 years, and sent thousands of Ilankai Tamils into exile.
Sunthar Vykunthanathan, a Tamil Canadian comedian and writer, told Silverscreen India that “the book is part of the Toronto District Board high school curriculum and as a queer Tamil Canadian it has meant so much to me. That is why it is so hurtful. The people who play the role are not only not Tamil but are the ones who oppressed us. It’s aggression towards us which says ‘you’re not even good enough to tell your own story’. Mehta knows to play and perpetuate these ideas in western society that we are all monolithic, that we are all the same. We know we are not.”
Vijay Saravanamuthu, a spokesperson for the Queer Tamil Collective said that the book was the “first mainstream recognition and affirmation” for the Sri Lankan Tamil queer community. Speaking to Silverscreen India, Saravanamuthu said, “Part of the reason why there’s so much controversy around the film is that the book is meaningful to so many of us. There were great expectations and excitement to finally see that on-screen. But as more information came out about how this film was made, it was very hypocritical. Because, on the one hand, Deepa Mehta is portraying herself as a humanitarian who wants to show the oppression but this production is reproducing the same kinds of erasure and violence of the queer Tamil identity that she is claiming to tell in the film.”
Issues With The Tamil Language Spoken In The Film
Eelam Tamil researcher and writer Sinthujan Varatharajah, one of the most vocal critics of the film, when discussing the problematic Tamil language pronunciation in the trailer of the film said, “It is essential to portray people as accurately as possible. If that does not work, one can find alternatives to that. There is an importance here not just in representing Tamil people properly but not substituting Tamil people with Sinhalese people. She could have used Muslims who are also Tamil speaking and that would be much more sensible and also less work. You won’t have to coach or train them.”
Varatharajah compared the casting in the film to using a German actor to portray a Jew in a movie about the Holocaust. “It’s the question of would you use Germans to play Jews? You definitely should not replace the oppressed with the oppressor, that’s the core of it,” they said.
The Canadian Tamil Congress, an organisation of Tamils in Canada, met with Mehta to discuss the issues the Tamil community has had with the film. During the meeting, Mehta indicated that she was aware of the “problematic nature of spoken Tamil in the film” and that “past efforts to correct this had been stalled because of the pandemic and various other factors”. She noted that even though the trailer was produced with “unacceptable spoken Tamil, the required audio changes are currently underway to rectify the phonetic mistakes throughout the film and the final movie will be released with the changes implemented.”
Mehta tried to address the language issues by outsourcing the dubbing to India. Sharanya Manivannan, a Chennai-based Ilankai Tamil author, was approached by a director from the Chennai based Tamil film industry to help with fixing the Tamil language issues in the film.
Speaking to Silverscreen India, Manivannan said, “I was roped in with an agenda in mind, one that would superficially “correct” the issue but without addressing the harm done at all. I do not think it was Mehta’s agenda. I think that out of defensiveness, she looked for support in the wrong place.”
Manivannan was contacted on November 6 and a screening of the movie was held for her the next day. “I found out much later that the discussion about dubbing actually began in Canada a few days prior,” she said. “Outsourcing to India was a mistake, and possibly indicates an unwillingness to engage with the people directly affected by the events in the film. I believe that following the failure (of the effort to outsource the language correction to India), dubbing was done in Canada,” Manivannan added.
Varatharajah, whose family fled Sri Lanka in the aftermath of the ’83 anti-Tamil pogroms, said that “the mobs would stop cars during the riots and ask Tamil people to pronounce a word. If they had a Tamil accent, they would be taken out, sometimes a tire was placed around their neck, and then it was burned. During that time, language is what exposed you, language is what harmed you, and it is also what killed a lot of people. Then to have Deepa Mehta being so insensitive while making this film, it’s all a showcase of deep disrespect.”
Saravanamuthu explains the Eelam Tamil language is central to the reason why they were being persecuted. Recounting the horrors his parents faced in the ’83 riots, Saravanamuthu said that when Tamil people were cornered by a mob, the only way for them to not be killed was to speak with a Sinhalese accent. He said that the Tamil accent in the trailer is “the Tamil spoken by Sinhalese people”. And for him, hearing Tamil spoken with a Sinhalese accent brings back memories of the slaughter of his people during the riots.
In late October, Canada selected Funny Boy as its entry in the International Feature Film entry for the upcoming Academy Awards as a Tamil film. The language requirement, which is among the criteria that need to be fulfilled by an international film to qualify for the Oscars, says that a “minimum of half of a foreign film’s dialogue has to be in a language other than English”.
Both Manivannan and Varatharajah criticised the move. Manivannan said, “It was absolutely wrong to call this a Tamil language film thereby gaining eligibility for the Best International Language Film category at the Academy Awards. If it was supposed to be a Tamil film, it should have treated the language with respect from the start and represented the particular communities whose history it captures far better.” Varatharajah criticised the language as well, saying “if it is a Tamil story, it needs to be in Tamil, but when the first trailer was put out people could notice how absurd the Tamil was.” They also criticised Deepa Mehta for not making any effort to speak to the Tamil community. “It shows how uninterested she is in Tamil people’s stories,” they said.
The film has since been released on CBC TV and CBC Gem on December 4, and Vykunthanathan says, “minus the one character they have redubbed, the Tamil is still awful.”

Mehta’s History With Sri Lanka
Though Funny Boy is the first time Mehta shot in Sri Lanka for a story that is local to the land, she has shot on the island previously for her films Water (2005) and Midnight’s Children (2012).
Midnight’s Children was filmed in Sri Lanka in 2010 and 2011, a period of tumult in the country after the brutal suppression of Tamil protests by the Rajapaksa regime. Mehta, under pressure from Hindutva forces in India, chose to film in Sri Lanka, angering Tamil activists. Varatharajah first criticised Mehta in an article they wrote seven years ago. “Deepa Mehta was willfully helping whitewash the regime accused of war crimes and crimes against humanity and genocide. She couldn’t film the movie in India because of the Hindutva pressure, so she looked for an alternative location which ended up being Sri Lanka, which ironically is run by a fundamentalist government,” they said.
Mehta, Varatharajah said, “was in Sri Lanka in 2010 meeting the president and arranging her film at the same time when Arundhati Roy, Noam Chomsky, and so many other cultural and political activists were boycotting Sri Lanka.” They attributed the protests against Funny Boy to Deepa Mehta’s relationship with the Sri Lankan Government, and how in a movie about Tamils, she has replaced Tamil people from her cast and replaced them with Sinhalese actors. They described this as traumatic because the Sinhalese community is the community responsible for violence against Tamils, going back again to the theme of an oppressor playing the oppressed.
Saravanamuthu expressed similar sentiments, questioning how Mehta could have gone to Sri Lanka in good conscience when Tamil people were being slaughtered. “She even specifically thanked the Sri Lankan army in the film Midnight’s Children,” he said and questioned why it was acceptable for her to come back to the island and tell the story of the same slaughter she ignored then.
Deepa Mehta’s Response To The Criticism
After initial criticism about the lack of Tamil representation in Funny Boy, Mehta told the Canadian press that the film’s team spent over a year casting for the story. She said initially they had chosen “some great Tamil actors”, but they were unable to act in the film “due to family issues and visa problems” and later ended up with a “cast made up of 50 percent Tamil actors, and almost all of them Sri Lankan.”
In an interview with the Daily Mirror’s Easwaran Rutnum, Mehta said that her team approached many Tamils not only in Sri Lanka but also in Toronto, New York, and London. She also explains that the Tamils in Sri Lanka were “slightly apprehensive about being associated with a book and a film that had a gay topic.”
Supporting the claims of Mehta, Tamil-Canadian actor Suthan Mahalingam posted a video saying the director did try to cast Tamil actors, and that he was cast as a Tamil character in Funny Boy but was unable to accept the role.
But Varatharajah and the Queer Tamil Collective pushed back against Mehta’s claim. If there had been open casting calls, they would have known, because the Queer Tamil community is tight-knit. Vykunthanathan said, “The queer Tamils in Toronto were not approached because we would have heard about it. So, she is using this to further justify her decisions.”
On Saturday, Mehta told the online magazine LiveMint “While casting Arjie in Funny Boy, it was important to me that the actor was gay. In Sri Lanka, where being queer still bears a criminal charge, casting an openly gay Sri Lankan was most important. Arjie’s coming out had to be visceral, it had to go beyond acting. I wish we could have found the right Tamil actor but unfortunately, it didn’t work out,” and “There is no point casting someone politically correct who can’t act.”
Varatharajah says Mehta has been “dismissive in terms of her responses. I think she is insinuating (in the Daily Mirror interview) that homophobia is so widespread among Tamils but in reality, it is widespread among all societies. To blame Tamil people for her not having done her work properly is a perverse dynamic,” they added. The Queer Tamil Collective’s online petition accuses Mehta of “pitting gay identity against Tamil integrity,” erasing the lead character’s doubly marginalised identity of being both gay and Tamil.
Vykunthanathan, who is an openly queer Tamil comedian, says the voices who have been critiquing the film have been shamed and gaslighted by Mehta. “I talk about my sexuality and being queer on stages in Toronto, London, and New York while performing in front of an all-Tamil audience who have welcomed me with open arms. I think her statements are further perpetuating the idea that homophobia is the reason for her mistakes. And I think that is awful,” he said.
In the interview with the Daily Mirror, Mehta attributed a lot of the criticism to the people living outside of Sri Lanka, and said: “if we care so much, we should be back in our country and fighting.” Mehta’s remarks in this and other interviews have further amplified the criticism against her for not understanding the feelings of the Tamil community. Vykunthanathan said, “Mehta has shown in her repeated violence through her words in her interviews that she does not have a clue what it is like to be a Tamil from Sri Lanka who is unable to go back, unable to speak up for their family members. In fact, one of the actors she had originally cast, could not even go to Sri Lanka because of their refugee status. There’s nothing more ironic than that.”
For her to say that “we should go back” is perpetuating western ideas where we hear “If you don’t like it here, go back to your country,” he said.
What Do The Sri Lankan Tamil Groups Want From Deepa Mehta?
While Varatharajah is asking for a boycott of the film, the other activists want Mehta to engage with them and recognize the erasure of their identities. They would like Mehta to acknowledge the issues with the production and apologise to the community.
Saravanamuthu, speaking for the Queer Tamil Collective, echoed the sentiments of most activists. The Queer Tamil Collective wants people to know that even though this might be a beautiful film, the production has been “instrumental in erasing us and perpetuating the violence against us.” He pleads for engagement from the filmmaker. “Why is this film violent towards us?” he asked, “Why can’t Mehta listen to us? Instead of coming at us with arrogant dismissals, we ask for her to actually engage and be open to listening as to why this project is problematic.” He seeks an apology from Mehta as well because he argues that the Tamil community was disrespected during the production, which actually put money, jobs, and all focus into the hands of their oppressors while “claiming that it is a story about our liberation.”
Beyond an apology, “which is certainly warranted,” Mehta can find a “meaningful way to rectify the damage by helping organisations that work on minority issues in Sri Lanka, said Manivannan. Production companies and platforms like Netflix should give the same importance that they do to Western marginalisation when making movies about oppressed communities, said Varatharajah. “You can’t just be like “every brown person is the same”. It’s casteist and colorist,” they said. Varatharajah would like Mehta to “speak about the fact and apologize. That’s all. Mehta has done what she has done, but there needs to be accountability.”
Funny Boy will release on Netflix on December 10

Directed by Ivan Ayr, the movie stars Suvinder Vicky, who also won the Silver Screen award for Best Performer in the Asian Feature Film Competition category. The jury said Vicky’s performance was “delicately understated and quiet, yet with a power that carried us through the film. It was full of emotion but held together with a beautifully restrained quality.”
According to a report by Variety, the movie “recounts the recounts the foretaste of doom that follows a veteran truck driver when his vehicle passes half a million kilometers and he is asked to train a younger operator.”
The film has been edited by Ayr as well. It premiered at the 77th Venice Film Festival in its Horizon section. The movie was also shown at the Stockholm Film Festival and the Pingyao Film Festival.
According to WION News, the film was shot in Haryana and the dialogues are partially in Punjabi. The movie was shot earlier this year, in January and February.
Ayr had previously directed the 2018 film Soni, which is a crime drama based in New Delhi.
The film festival was conducted as a hybrid event with both virtual and real-time screenings. While the ceremony was held as a closed-door event, the whole ceremony has been recorded. The recording will be made available from December 7.

In an exclusive interview with Silverscreen India, Shraddha had said, “For me, it was just the thrill of being a part of a Mohanlal film and an interesting part to play. She is an IAS officer and she is a very upright kind of a person. It was everything really. It was the genre, it was a space that I had not explored, it’s more of a commercial kind of a film. And there were all these amazing names and my character was a very interesting role to play.”
The film marks her comeback to the Malayalam film industry after five years. Speaking about working on the project she said, “You don’t miss an opportunity to work with someone like Mohanlal.”
This film marks the fifth collaboration between Mohanlal and Unnikrishnan. They had last worked together on Villain in 2017. Aaraattu has been written by screenwriter Udayakrishna, who had earlier written Mohanlal’s super hit film Pulimurugan.
Mohanlal had shared stills of him on the set after they had commenced the shoot in November in Pallakad. According to The News Minute, Mohanlal plays the character of Neyyattinkara Gopan, who travels from Neyyattinkara to Palakkad to complete a mission.

Kumari will be directed by Nirmal Sahadev, who has also written the script. This is Sahadev’s second film, after the 2018 Malayalam action thriller film Ranam, starring Prithviraj. Giju John, Nirmal Sahadev, Jakes Bejoy, Sreejith Sarang under the banner of The Fresh Lime Sodas will produce the film.
On November 25, the motion poster of the film, depicting mythical elements and featuring Aishwarya Lekhsmi in the titular role, was released. The rest of the cast members are yet to be announced.
According to a The Times of India report, the film is touted to be a mythological horror and is set to be shot in northern Kerala. Aishwarya Lekhsmi had said on social media that the story, a tale that will take audiences back to their earliest memories of storytelling, gave her sleepless nights.
Speaking to ToI, director Nirmal Sahadev said, “I guess your childhood experiences mould you and I am making a return to my roots. This film is reminiscent of the stories that my mother and grandmother used to tell me. The motion poster reveals the world and soundscape that we are going to present, centred around our ancient myths and legends.”
Supriya Menon is producing another film, Kuruthi, starring Prithviraj. The film is set to start shooting from December 9. Both Kuruthi and Kumari will have music composed by Jakes Bejoy, who had previously composed for two of Prithviraj’s films, Ranam and the 2020 Malayalam action thriller Ayyappanum Koshiyum.
Kumari will have cinematography by Jigme Tenzing and editing by Sreejith Sarang. Stephy Zavior is designing the costumes for the cast.
Adil Hussain’s ‘Footprints on Water’ Begins Shooting in the UK
Footprints on Water, starring Adil Hussain, Antonio Aakeel, Nimisha Bindu Sajayan, and Lena Kumar, began shooting at Birmingham in the UK on Friday. Footprints on Water is an upcoming British-Indian film directed by Nathalia Syam, about an illegal immigrant man’s search for his missing daughter.

Footprints on Water has been written by the director’s sister, Neetha Syam, who won fifth place at the Cinestaan India’s Storytellers Contest for the script. The cinematographer of the film is Alagappan N.

Bankrolled by Mohaan Nadaar’s The Production Headquarters, Footprints on Water follows the story of a father (Hussain) who is staying in the UK illegally. He searches for his missing daughter while avoiding police scrutiny.
Lena Kumar will play Adil Hussain’s wife, who is the stepmother of the missing girl (Nimisha Bindu Sajayan). Antonio Aakeel will play an Afghani refugee in the film.
Speaking to Variety, Nathalia Syam said, “As immigrants of Indian origin brought up in Britain, we’ve had a ringside view into the lives of various people, their cultures and ethnicities. Neetha’s script will be visually approached by elements of realism. Through the plot of an illegal immigrant father’s search for his missing daughter, we raise the question of what happens, when the invisibles go missing.”
Hussain, who is also acting in the sequel of the hit 1969 Assamese film Dr Bezbarua, during an interview to Silverscreen India in November said, “All these projects, it just so happened that they got in touch with me through casting directors and I auditioned and the role was offered to me. There is no strategy behind it. The only strategy could be energy, that I had a strong desire to act in that script and somehow the universe conspired for me. That is the only way I can describe it.”
Hussain starred in the Netflix’s crime drama series Delhi Crime, which won the Best Drama Series Award at the 48th International Emmy Awards this year.
The script of Footprints on Water was also represented at the Jaipur Film Festival this year.

Anjaam Pathiraa Team Announces Next Malayalam Thriller
Anjaam Pathiraa‘s producer Ashiq Usman and star Kunchacko Boban will team up for yet another Malayalam thriller film. The team announced the news on Friday over social media.
Ashiq Usman shared the news along with a photo of director Midhun Manuel Thomas, lead actor Kunchacko Boban, and himself.
View this post on Instagram
Written and directed by Midhun Manuel Thomas and produced under the banner of Ashiq Usman Productions and Manual Movie Makers, Anjaam Pathiraa starred Kunchacko Boban, Jinu Joseph, Unnimaya Prasad, Sharaf U Dheen and Sreenath Bhasi.
The film had released in January 2020.
For Midhun Manuel Thomas, Anjaam Pathiraa was his first venture in the thriller genre. He has in the past worked on comedy films like Aadu (2015), its sequel Aadu 2 (2017), Alamara (2017), Ann Maria Kalippilaanu (2016) and Argentina Fans Kaattoorkadavu (2019). Argentina Fans Kaattoorkadavu was also the first film on which Thomas and Usman collaborated.
In Anjaam Pathiraa, Boban played the role of Dr Anvar Hussain, a psychologist who worked as a consulting criminologist in the Kochi City Police. The story revolved around Hussain and a squad of police officers that he assisted while attempting to unveil the face of a serial killer who was targeting police officers.
In fact, after a successful run, Anjaam Pathiraa is all set to get remade in Hindi, with producers Reliance Entertainment, AP International and Ashiq Usman Productions itself, as reported by The Indian Express.
This latest thriller will mark the fifth collaboration between Boban and Usman. Besides Anjaam Pathiraa and the upcoming thriller, the actor-producer duo has previously worked together on Allu Ramendran (2019 Malayalam comedy-thriller), Shajahanum Pareekuttiyum (2016 Malayalam romantic comedy), and Varnyathil Aashanka (2017 Malayalam comedy-drama).
The rest of the cast is yet to be revealed.
There has also been no official announcement on the shooting schedule or the release date as yet.
Warner Bros Will Debut All 2021 Films On HBO Max
Warner Bros announced on Thursday that after DC’s Wonder Woman 1984, all their 2021-slated movies will release on HBO Max as well as in theatres for US audiences on the same day. The announcement comes in the backdrop of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. Only 50% of US theatres are currently open.
Jason Kilar, CEO, WarnerMedia, said in a statement that the decision was the best way forward for WarnerMedia’s motion picture business to navigate the next 12 months. Films will be released in theatres and on HBO Max in the US with an exclusive one-month access period on the streaming platform. After the one-month access period, the film will continue to run in theatres both domestically and globally. At this point, other distribution windows will be able to apply for the films.
In total, 17 movies will now be released under this hybrid model. These include, The Little Things, Judas and the Black Messiah, Tom & Jerry, Godzilla vs. Kong, Mortal Kombat, Those Who Wish Me Dead, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, In The Heights, Space Jam: A New Legacy, The Suicide Squad, Reminiscence, Malignant, Dune, The Many Saints of Newark, King Richard, Cry Macho and Matrix 4.
This model, which Kilar called a “unique, consumer-focused distribution model” comes as a strategic response to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. Kilar further said, “…we are….giving [consumers] the choice and the power to decide how they want to enjoy these films. Our content is extremely valuable, unless it’s sitting on a shelf not being seen by anyone.”
Ann Sarnoff, the CEO and Chair of WarnerMedia Studios, said that realistically speaking, theatres would continue to operate at a reduced capacity and the situation needed to be balanced. Calling the move a win-win decision, she said, “With this unique one-year plan, we can support our partners in exhibition with a steady pipeline of world-class films, while also giving moviegoers who may not have access to theaters or aren’t quite ready to go back to the movies the chance to see our amazing 2021 films.”
Last month, Warner Bros had announced a simultaneous release for DC’s Wonder Woman 1984, a superhero film starring Gal Gadot and Chris Pines, in US theatres and on HBO Max for US audiences. The movie will be available on HBO Max on the day of its theatrical release at no extra cost for the first month of the film’s release.
According to Reuters, soon after Warner Bros’ Thursday announcement, shares of AMC Entertainment, the world’s largest theatre operator, fell almost 16 percent. Shares of theatre chain Cinemark also dropped about 22 percent. Only about 50 percent of theatres in the US have reopened currently, and almost all major films have delayed their releases.

Touted to be an action thriller, Om: The Battle Within marks the first collaboration between Aditya Roy Kapur and Sanjana Sanghi. Om: The Battle Within will also be Sanjana Sanghi’s second film after she debuted as Kizie Bose in Dil Bechara in July, alongside late actor Sushant Singh Rajput.
Helmed by debutant director Kapil Verma, the son of action director Tinu Verma, Om: The Battle Within is expected to release in the summer of 2021. The month of release has not been confirmed as yet.
The screenplay of the film has been written by Akshat R Saluja and Niket Pandey, while the cinematography has been handled by Vineet Malhotra. Prabhat Thakur is in charge of the art direction.
Speaking about the film to DNA, Aditya Roy Kapur had said, “Last year I was juggling between shooting Malang and Ludo around this time and both the films have received immense love and appreciation. Rubam: First Look of Parvati Nair’s Supernatural Cop Film Released
Rubam, the upcoming Tamil film starring Parvati Nair, had its first look poster out on social media on Thursday. Rubam is set to be a woman-centric supernatural thriller.
Speaking to Silverscreen India, director of the film Thamarai Selvan said, “It is an emotional story revolving around two mothers and a child. Parvati Nair will be essaying the role of one mother. She will also be seen as a cop in the film.”
Produced by Kotapadi J Rajesh under the KJR Studios banner, Rubam will be written and directed by debutant director Thamarai Selvan. Touted to be a supernatural thriller, the film will be based on a female-centric story. The film’s publicity manager Yuvaraj told Silverscreen India that the film’s shooting is set to begin in Chennai from January 2021 onwards.
“The film will have a prominent supernatural element present throughout that will play an important part in the story. However, the film is a complete thriller. You will be able to see a clear difference between the thriller and horror element in Rubam. But at the same time, the film will be a mix of both,” Selvan added.
Speaking about the casting, the director said, “Freddy Daruwala will play the villain in the film. We are in talks with actor Sneha for the role of another mother, but nothing has been decided yet.”
The film marks Daruwala’s debut in the Tamil film industry.
While Sarathkumar is the editor of the film, Ghibran will score the music, and cinematography will be handled by Sudarshan Srinivasan. Peter Hein is the stunt coordinator and Gopi is the art director.
Thamarai Selvan has earlier worked as an assistant director in a number of Tamil films, including Thani Oruvan (2015) and Velaikkaran (2017). Both films were helmed by actor Jayam Ravi‘s brother, Mohan Raja.
Meanwhile, Parvati Nair, who has predominantly worked with the Malayalam and Tamil film industries, was last seen in the 2018 Tamil Amazon web series, Vella Raja.

The teaser begins with news being read about the ‘Janta Curfew’ that was declared by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 22, and was the precursor to the 21-day lockdown imposed to control the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic in the country. The film seems to share a resemblance with Amazon Prime Video’s earlier release from this year, the Tamil anthology film Putham Pudhu Kaalai.
The two films share similar themes of hope, second chances, and new beginnings. However, while Putham Pudhu Kaalai was shot entirely indoors, Unpaused has been shot outdoors as well.
Putham Pudhu Kaalai was an anthology of five short films directed by Suhasini Mani Ratnam, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Sudha Kongara, Karthik Subbaraj and Rajiv Menon, and released on Amazon Prime Video on October 16.
Talking about Unpaused, Aparna Purohit, head of India originals, Amazon Prime Video, said: “The union of such creative forces during these unprecedented times is testament to the fact that art will always find expression, even in the most challenging times.”
She added, “These stories are a reminder that there is hope at the end of a dark tunnel and chance for us to embark on new beginnings.”
Unpaused is set to release on December 18. It was shot during the Unlock phase and adheres to government rules and regulations issued in Maharashtra, as per a statement released by the OTT giant.
The collection of five short stories includes Glitch (directed by Raj & DK, starring Gulshan Deviah and Saiyami Kher), Apartment (directed by Nikkhil Advani, starring Richa Chadha, Sumeet Vyas and Ishwak Singh), Rat – A – Tat (directed by Tannishtha Chatterjee, starring Rinku Rajguru and Lillete Dubey), Vishaanu (directed by Avinash Arun, starring Abhishek Banerjee and Geetika Vidya Ohlyan), and Chaand Mubarak (directed by Nitya Mehra, starring Ratna Pathak Shah and Shardul Bhardwaj).
The trailer of the film will release on Amazon Prime Video on December 8.
Salaar: Prabhas to Star in Prashant Neel’s Next Multilingual Film
Prabhas, the actor, will star in Salaar, a multilingual film directed by Prasant Neel and produced by Hombale Films.
Shooting of the film is expected to begin in January 2021, Prabhas announced in a post on social media on Wednesday.
Neel is most popular for helming the 2018 hit Kannada film KGF: Chapter 1, that first released in Kannada and was later dubbed and released in Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam and Hindi. Salaar will also release in Kannada, Telugu, Malayalam, Tamil and Hindi, the film’s publicity manager Yuvraaj told Silverscreen India.
The makers announced the title of Prabhas and Neel’s upcoming film and released a first-look poster on Wednesday through Twitter.

Salaar is being produced by Vijay Kiragandur of Hombale Films, who also produced KGF: Chapter 1. Salaar marks the producer-director duo’s third collaboration on a pan-Indian film after KGF: Chapter 1 and its sequel KGF: Chapter 2, that resumed shooting this August. KGF: Chapter 1, a period drama that dealt with a gold mafia in Karnataka’s Kolar Gold Fields, and its sequel both starred Yash in the lead role.
“We are going to make this movie in all major Indian languages,” said Kiragandur in a press release issued on Wednesday.
Details about the rest of the cast of the film will be announced soon, Yuvraaj told Silverscreen India.
There has been no official announcement on the scheduled release date of the film. Kirangandur, however, said that Salaar will release only after the release of Prabhas’ pan-India film Radhe Shyam, which he is currently shooting for along with Pooja Hegde.
Salaar marks the entry of Prabhas in Kannada cinema, and is his seventh Indian film after Baahubali: The Beginning (2015), the massively successful period drama, its similarly successful sequel Baahubali 2: The Conclusion (2017), Saaho (2019), Radhe Shyam, Nag Ashwin‘s untitled film and Adipurush (upcoming period drama co-starring Saif Ali Khan and Kriti Sanon).
Paava Kadhaigal: Trailer Shows Glimpses of Four Stories Tied by Love, Honour, Sin, and Pride
The trailer of Paava Kadhaigal, Netflix’s first Tamil anthology film, was released on Thursday.
Paava Kadhaigal comprises four stories, each helmed by directors Gautham Menon, Sudha Kongara, Vetrimaaran, and Vignesh Shivan. The two-minute-long trailer shows the four broad themes each story will focus on- honour, love, sin, and pride.
The film stars Anjali, Kalki Koechlin, Kalidas Jayaram, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Hari, Prakash Raj, Sai Pallavi, Shantanu Bhagyaraj, and Simran.
The film will release on December 18.
Paava Kadhaigal will be produced by Ronnie Screwvala, under his RSVP Movies banner, and Ashi Dua Sara, under the Flying Unicorn Entertainment banner.
Vetri Maaran, who directed Oor Iravu in the film, said in the press release: “Each of these stories brings together incidents from across the country that are gruesome. It shows how pride on a personal and societal level affects human relationships. I am looking forward to this story reaching out to an audience around the globe and relate with them in some way or the other.”
Vignesh, who has directed Love Panna Uttranum, said: “The shoot for the film was brilliant and it was a great experience working with such solid actors that gave their best performances. Paava Kadhaigal helped me explore such an authentic theme in an honest way and gave me the opportunity to work alongside some of the most experienced filmmakers from the industry.”
During a conversation with film critic Baradwaj Rangan during the trailer launch, when asked how tough it was to write a short film, Kongara said, “I did not find it easy at all. When I write, there is a beginning, middle, and an end. I take my time to work out the whole emotion. I was doing what I would do to in a feature in 30 minutes and I was not treating it as a separate format, so that became pretty challenging for me.”
Earlier in October, Netflix had announced its second Tamil anthology film Navarasa, which will consist of nine stories, produced by Mani Ratnam and Jayendra Panchapakesana and starring Revathy, Aishwarya Rajesh, Nithya Menen, Poorna, Parvathy Thiruvothu, Suriya, Vijay Sethupathi, Prakash Raj, Saravanan, Gautham Karthik, Ashok Selvan, Robo Shankar and Siddharth. Navarasa is a collaboration between nine directors- Arvind Swami, Bejoy Nambiar, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Karthik Subbaraj, Karthick Naren, KV Anand, Ponram, Rathindran Prasad and Halitha Shameem.
Sundance Film Festival 2021 To Have Virtual Screenings Across USA
The 2021 edition of the Sundance Film Festival will move beyond its traditional venue, Park City in Utah, to cities across the United States via online screenings, due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The Sundance Institute, as per a Variety report, announced on Wednesday that they would collaborate with drive-in theatres and independent cinemas across the country to make this available to the public.
Organised by the non-profit Sundance Institute, this year’s event will be screened in cities like New York, Ohio, Tennessee, Kansas, California, and Florida, in addition to its traditional venue at Park City in Utah. The festival is scheduled to be held from January 28 through February 3. The shift to virtual space comes in the wake of the Coronavirus pandemic.
“The core of our Festival in the form of an online platform and socially distanced cinematic experiences is responsive to the pandemic and gives us the opportunity to reach new audiences, safely, where they are,” said festival director Tabitha Jackson, who is directing the festival for the first time.
Jackson who called the event a “festival of discovery,” said, “Even under these impossible circumstances artists are still finding paths to make bold and vital work in whatever ways they can.”
“Our Festival footprint has changed this year, but we are excited to bring an incredible community together in new ways to engage with new artists and new stories — whether they’re joining us for the first year or have been for decades,” said executive director Keri Putnam.
As per the festival’s original schedule, films will premiere throughout the day, with Day One films set to debut on Thursday, January 28, at 6 p.m. U.S. Mountain Time. Over 70 feature films will premiere online in a dedicated time slot, followed by a live Q & A. Multiple films will premiere simultaneously roughly every three hours from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. U.S. Mountain Time. This rollout is designed to preserve the energy of the festival, with an abundance of choices and collective experiences, as audiences can begin the film simultaneously, and participate in the live Q&A which follows, organisers said.
Jackson told Variety, “Nothing is going to beat being in the Eccles Theatre. We recognise that, and won’t pretend otherwise. But in a pandemic, this is the best we’ve come up with and we’re happy about the opportunities with it.”
All films will return to the platform two days after their premiere for a “second screening,” offered on demand for 24 hours.
The Short Film and Indie Series (formerly the Indie Episodic programs), which focuses on creative storytelling outside the feature format, will include 50 short films and world premieres of four episodic works. These will be available on demand on the festival platform for the full duration of the festival.
The Sundance festival is yet to announce its line-up of films.
Given the Covid-19 pandemic, several international film festivals and award functions have devised ways to deal with the crisis.
The 93rd Academy Awards that is scheduled to be held in April 2021 will have a live show at the 3,400 seater Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. With the Academy of Motion Arts and Sciences postponing the Oscars by two months, the event will be held with Covid-19 safety protocols in place and will be broadcast by ABC Television Network.
The Emmy Awards was held in September this year partially on Zoom and partially live at an empty Staples Theatre in Los Angeles which was broadcast by the ABC Television Network. The announcement of nominations and winners was done digitally with the presenters doing the honours through Zoom calls from their houses.
Meanwhile, the Venice International Film Festival, also held in September, saw half the usual attendance present, and strictly maintained Covid-19 safety protocols.
Other upcoming international film ceremonies include, the Golden Globe Awards 2021 (February 28, 2021), the Critics Choice Awards (March 7, 2021), the Screen Actors Guild Awards or SAG (March 14, 2021), and the British Academy for Film and Television Awards or BAFTA (April 11, 2021).
Kalki Koechlin and Neena Gupta To Star In Goldfish, an International Film
Kalki Koechlin (Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, Margarita With a Straw) and Neena Gupta (Badhaai Ho) will team up for Goldfish, their first international collaboration.
Directed by Pushan Kripalani, Goldfish is a British-American project, produced by Splendid Films USA. Koechlin and Gupta shared the news on Instagram and announced that shooting for Goldfish would start soon. Both actors also said that it is their first international collaboration.
Gupta has earlier worked with Pushan Kripalani on The Threshold, which released in 2015. Kripalani is the writer, director and cinematographer for Goldfish. The film’s executive producer is Pooja Chauhan.
According to a report in Mid-Day, the film will see Gupta playing Koechlin’s mom. The report states that the story is a mother-daughter drama where Koechlin’s character will be seen returning home to her mother, who is showing early signs of dementia. The plot reportedly revolves around the subject of mental health.
“Neenaji is an amazing actor. I have worked closely with Arghya [Lahiri], who has co-written the script, during my theatre days. So it’ll be a happy union of people from different walks of life,” Koechlin told Mid-Day. The film will reportedly be shot in the UK.
“Pushan [Kripalani] gives complete creative freedom to his actors,” Gupta told the daily.
In 2017, Gupta had made headlines when she took to Instagram and asked for work. She later revealed that she had received five offers after that post. Since then she has acted in films like Badhaai Ho, Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan, and Panga. Her next release will be The Last Color which is scheduled to release in India on December 11.
Goldfish, however, is not Gupta’s first international venture. The actor has previously made appearances in several international films such as Gandhi (1982), The Deceivers (1988), Mirza Ghalib (1989) In Custody (1993), and Cotton Mary (1999).
Kalki Koechlin has starred in two of the highest grossing films of their respective release years, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (2011) and Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (2013). In addition to numerous awards for her commercial as well as independent cinema work, she has been vocal on a number of philanthropic issues, including that of mental health.
